Notably, Kim also inspected&nbsp;photos of a US naval base in San Diego and a Kadena air base in Japan, taken by the&nbsp;spy satellite.

US had earlier condemned the launch of the "Malligyong-1" spy satellite calling it a "brazen violation" of UN sanctions.

However,&nbsp;North Korea's ambassador to the United Nations, Kim Song, in a rare appearance at the Security Council&nbsp;said only Washington and South Korea were having trouble with Pyongyang deploying a satellite.&nbsp;

"One belligerent party, the United States, is threatening us with a nuclear weapon," said Kim.

"It is a legitimate right for the DPRK as another belligerent party to develop, test, manufacture and possess weapons systems equivalent to those that the United States possesses or is developing."

US Attorney Damian Williams announced charges against Nikhil Gupta, who was arrested by Czech authorities in the month of June this year in conformance to the bilateral extradition treaty between the United States and the Czech Republic.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine shook the world in February 2022. Sweden and Finland were among these nations. After Russian troops began their clash with Ukrainian forces, Sweden and Finland promptly applied for membership in NATO.

Why?

Because NATO was a guarantee of security, at least on paper, against external aggression. An attack on one NATO country is considered an attack against all. So at least in theory, the aggressor against a NATO nation will have to face the might of all 31 member countries. And to include new members, there must be approval from all current members.

Sweden and Finland's path to NATO membership was not smooth. In focus have been two countries, Turkey and Hungary. But Turkey is considered somewhat of the main obstacle. After a delay caused by Turkey in giving its seal of approval, Finland joined NATO this year. However, it has not fully completed the process for Sweden's inclusion.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan himself has given the green light to Sweden's inclusion. But this needs to be ratified by Turkey's parliament. And procedural delay over the last year has been perceived as Turkey's reluctance to let Sweden in.

In May last year, Erdogan objected to Finland and Sweden's inclusion saying both countries need to crack down on elements within their borders which Ankara deems to be terrorists.

The West has always been keen on the expansion of NATO as the grouping was born as a West-supported anti-Russia alliance during the Cold War. However, the urgency appears to have increased after the outbreak of the Ukraine war.

Turkey made an agreement with Sweden and Finland at a NATO meeting in Madrid last year that saw the Nordic countries lift arms embargoes against Turkey. The countries also took some action against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the so-called Gulen movement. Along with Turkey, the United States and the European Union consider PKK to be a terrorist group. And Turkey considers the Gulen movement responsible for the 2016 coup attempt.

Turkey argues that the United States is trying to pressure Turkey by delaying the F-16 deal. Turkey had made the purchase request in 2021 to buy F-16 fighter jets and modernisation kits worth USD 20 billion. Although the US denies the connection between the F-16 deal and Turkey's delay in greenlighting Sweden's NATO bid, US Congress has heard opinions from lawmakers to use the deal as a way to nudge Turkey to approve Sweden's inclusion.

Moreover, just a day after Erdogan gave his seal of approval for Sweden to join NATO in July, the White House announced that it would go ahead with the transfer of F-16s while being in consultation with Congress.

<h2>So what's the current state of Sweden's bid?</h2>

There were signs on Wednesday (November 29) that Turkey may finally be moving ahead with the process.

Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom said that his Turkish counterpart told him that he expects parliament to ratify Sweden's bid within weeks.

"The Turkish foreign minister (Hakan Fidan) didn't present a date but said 'within weeks'," Billstrom said.

Hungary, another NATO member, is yet to give its seal of approval to Sweden's NATO membership as well. But Turkey is seen as the main obstacle.

"(Prime Minister) Viktor Orban has repeatedly said that Hungary won't be the last to ratify Sweden's membership," Billstrom said.

"That means that it is more in the hands of Ankara than maybe of Budapest. We expect white smoke from Budapest the moment there is white smoke from Ankara," Billstrom said.

Canadian Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge made the announcement on Wednesday (Nov 29) which brings an end to a bitter fight between the two parties that ensued at the start of the year.&nbsp;

The search engine giant had previously vowed to remove links to news in Canada in response to the Online News Act,&nbsp;introduced by Justin Trudeau's Liberal government and due to come into effect on December 19.&nbsp;

"Following weeks of productive discussions, I am happy to announce that we have found a path forward with Google for the implementation of the Online News Act," said St-Onge.&nbsp;

The minister added that funding would be used&nbsp;for a "wide range of news businesses across the country, including independent news businesses and those from Indigenous and official-language minority communities".

As for how the money would be distributed, the government said Google would pay a "single collective" which would distribute the funds to news agencies based on the number of full-time journalists engaged by those businesses.&nbsp;

"Adam al-Ghul, eight years old, and Bassem Abu el-Wafa, 15 years old, were killed by bullets from the occupier,"&nbsp;the ministry released a statement saying.

As per local media reports, the CCTV footage of the incident doing rounds on the internet shows a boy being hit by a bullet and falling in the street, prompting the other kids to flee from the site.

Several other images of the incident show a teenager also being struck by a bullet and falling, appearing to call for help as more shots hit the ground around him and other people run for cover, as per news agency AFP reports.

An official with the Palestinian Red Crescent told AFP that the boy and the teen had been on a side street of central Jenin's main thoroughfare, an area apparently off limits to the Israeli army as it is solely under the control of the Palestinian Authority.

It said that the army personnel did carry an overnight raid in the Jenin refugee camp which it said "killed two high-ranking terrorists".

Out of the two, one was wanted over connection with attacks that claimed the lives of Israelis or wounded them.

Meanwhile, Hamas claimed that a ten-month-old hostage, Kfir Babis was killed along with two family members in an alleged Israeli airstrike before the truce.&nbsp;

Hamas' armed wing Al-Qassam Brigades made the claims, to which Israel reacted saying that it is still verifying the reports. The militant group failed to provide any evidence supporting its claims over the killing of the baby.&nbsp;

The Palestinian militant group further stated that the baby's mother, 30-year-old mother Shiri Silberman-Babis and four-year-old brother Ariel, were also killed in the Israeli bombardment.

The Israeli army said that it is investigating the reports. It released a statement saying that it was "verifying the accuracy of the information."

"Hamas is endangering the lives of all the hostages in the Gaza Strip, which includes nine children, and is responsible for their security," an IDF statement said.&nbsp;

Additionally, the Thais&nbsp;also spoke of the limited opportunity for showers during their captivity.

“We were with Israelis, and they were guarded all the time,” a man reportedly said. “The Jews who were held with me were treated very harshly, sometimes they were beaten with electric cables.”

A study led by a glaciologist at the University of Leeds Benjamin Wallis, who used satellites to monitor the Cadman Glacier in the west Antarctic peninsula, unveiled that between November 2018 and May 2021, the glacier retreated eight kilometres as the ice shelf at its end collapsed.

The scientists said that Antarctic glaciers could undergo rapid changes and lose significant amounts of ice due to warmer ocean conditions. The collapsed ice shelf, if had remained intact, would have slowed down the glacier's movement towards the sea. Warmer ocean waters are believed to have surrounded the glacier, causing the ice shelf to thin and become ungrounded.

Consequently, the glacier's flow speed doubled, leading to increased ice discharge into the sea through iceberg calving.

Benjamin Wallis expressed surprise at the rapid deterioration of Cadman Glacier, stating, "We were surprised to see the speed at which Cadman went from being an apparently stable glacier to one where we see sudden deterioration and significant ice loss."

Wallis pointed at the unique response of neighbouring glaciers, suggesting important insights for projecting climate change effects in the polar region. The Cadman Glacier is now in a state of "substantial dynamic imbalance," with ice elevation shrinking at a rate of around 20 metres per year.

Approximately 2.16 billion tonnes of ice is draining into the ocean annually.

The researchers, who spoke on the importance of long-term monitoring, integrated three decades of data from nine satellite missions and in-situ oceanographic measurements.
