One of the most prominent pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong, Agnes Chow, who was jailed over her role in massive 2019 protests, on Sunday (Dec 3) revealed that she has left Hong Kong for Canada and would probably not return to meet her bail conditions.&nbsp;

The 27-year-old finally broke her silence two-and-a-half years after she was released after spending seven months in jail over a protest outside Hong Kong police headquarters in 2019.&nbsp;

<h2>What happened to Chow?</h2>

Chow, on her 27th birthday, took to Instagram and published two posts saying that she had left Hong Kong for Toronto in mid-September for university studies and would not return to report to the police as her bail conditions demanded, in December or possibly ever.&nbsp;

In her first public comments since her release from prison in June 2021, she also detailed how she had remained under “supervision” from the authorities, the pressure of which led to her developing depression, anxiety, and PTSD.&nbsp;

Chow said that she managed to get her passport back after agreeing to take part in a propaganda tour in mainland China. She was released on police bail on conditions, including surrendering her passport and reporting regularly to the police.&nbsp;

In July, Hong Kong police offered to return her passport on the condition that Chow would travel with them to the Chinese city of Shenzhen.&nbsp;

In August, the 27-year-old accompanied by five police officers was shown an exhibition of China’s achievements and the headquarters of tech giant Tencent – where she was requested to pose for photos, which Chow speculated would be held as proof of her “patriotism” to China.

While she was not questioned by Chinese authorities or met any Communist party officials, Chow said that she felt like “I was under surveillance all the time”.&nbsp;

Upon her return to Hong Kong, she was asked to write a letter of thanks to the police for arranging the trip to “understand the great development of my motherland”.

She was allowed to leave after the national security authorities demanded she submit information about the course, timetable, accommodation and other records in Canada. Chow was also required to return to Hong Kong during college holidays.&nbsp;

It was only in recent weeks that Chow had decided not to return to Hong Kong citing fears that if she went back there would be more conditions placed on her, or would be prevented from leaving again.

“I don’t want to be forced to do anything any more, and I don’t want to be forced to go to mainland China any more,” said the 27-year-old.&nbsp;

“After…considering the situation in Hong Kong, my own safety, my physical and mental health, I decided not to go back, and will probably never go back for the rest of my life,” Chow wrote.&nbsp;

<h2>Hong Kong police ‘responds’</h2>

In a seeming response to Chow’s post, the Hong Kong police released a statement on Monday (Dec 4), condemning these “irresponsible behaviours that blatantly challenge law and order.”&nbsp;

It added, “The police appeal to the person involved to step back from the cliff and not choose to take a path of no return and bear the name of ‘fugitive’ for the rest of her life.”

Chow was once one of the most prominent young faces of the 2012, 2014 and 2019 protests against China’s increasingly authoritarian rule in Hong Kong and a core member of the now-disbanded group of younger activists Demosisto, which helped drive the movement.&nbsp;

UK’s Conservative Party is going through its toughest phase under Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s watch, as more and more voters turn to the right-wing Reform Party.

A pollster has found that Sunak’s popularity has dipped below that of his short-lived predecessor Liz Truss, who put the embattled party in power the last time.

JL Partners in a ‘deep-dive analysis’ claimed that Sunak’s period had caused ‘an implosion’ within the Conservatives, thus handing over a clear edge to the Labour Party in the January 2025 elections.

<h2>Sunak’s miseries in numbers</h2>

According to the analysis by JL Partners, a mere 59 per cent of Conservatives who backed Boris Johnson in the 2019 elections, are throwing their weight behind Sunak.&nbsp;

That’s down from 74 per cent in August and 63 per cent in September last year.

The pollster also claimed that the Tories have lost a whopping 520,000 votes since the prime minister’s speech at the Conservative Party conference at the beginning of October.

<h2>Reform Party gaining traction</h2>

The report revealed that 15 per cent of Conservatives who backed the party in the 2019 elections were now rooting for the Reform Party. This translates into a net loss of 1.5 million votes for the Tories.

It also said that five per cent of 2019 voters turned to the centrist Liberal Democrat party, while 18 per cent have now started backing Labour.

<h2>Sunak’s biggest challenge</h2>

Amongst all, the immigration policy remains Sunak’s biggest challenge as his plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda was ruled unlawful by the UK’s top court last month.

The poll said around 50 per cent of voters who say they are undecided are expected to vote Conservative on election day, a phenomenon which pundits often term the “shy Tory” effect.

A 30-year-old YouTuber, who is also a former Olympic athlete, was sentenced to six months in prison for staging a small plane crash to make the video viral on social media.

Trevor Daniel Jacob, an experienced pilot and skydiver, admitted in June that he intentionally crashed his plane to capture the moment on a video in November 2021, and garner likes, federal prosecutors in California said in a news release.

He was charged with one count of destruction and concealment with the intent to obstruct a federal investigation.

The video titled “I Crashed My Airplane” appeared in December 2021 and appeared to show Jacob’s small plane having an engine failure over the mountainous Los Padres National Forest in Santa Barbara County.

He then jumps out with a selfie stick camera and pulls out a parachute he was already wearing.

The cameras mounted on the plane’s wing and tail also captured the moments before the crash and Jacob’s plunge.

After landing, he headed towards the crash site and recovered video from the onboard cameras, the government said.

Upon being questioned Jacob lied to the federal investigators about not knowing the crash site, federal prosecutors in the Central District of California said on Monday (Dec 4).

He had also lied to a Federal Aviation Administration safety inspector.

<h2>Lied to probing officials&nbsp;</h2>

According to prosecutors, Jacob was told days after the crash to preserve the site and inform the National Transportation Safety Board where it was.

Instead, he found the crash site and on December 10, 2021, used a helicopter to lift the wreckage out of the Los Padres National Forest. Then, bit by bit, he dismantled and disposed of the wreckage in an attempt to thwart the federal investigation, prosecutors said in the statement.

“It appears that (Jacob) exercised exceptionally poor judgment in committing this offence,” prosecutors argued in a sentencing memorandum.

“(Jacob) most likely committed this offence to generate social media and news coverage for himself and to obtain financial gain. Nevertheless, this type of ‘daredevil’ conduct cannot be tolerated.”

Jacob’s attorneys requested that he be sent to probation instead of prison time, writing in court documents the snowboarder was “living alone in his hanger” during the height of the coronavirus pandemic and made a “series of bad choices that culminated in the offence to which he has pleaded guilty.”

In a letter to the judge, Jacob wrote he was “sincerely sorry” and that he had “suffered a lot of consequences from this offence.”

She also said that people from around 28 households are still missing.&nbsp;

His parents were earlier told to assume he is in Gaza in Hamas captivity. Samerano is survived by his parents, Kobi and Ayelet, and his brother Yair.&nbsp;

“Jonathan was a magical kid, surrounded by friends, a DJ who only wanted to make music, grow, be happy and travel. He had so many dreams,” said members of his family, as quoted by Israeli newspaper, Haaretz.&nbsp;
