The election, in which he took 89.6% of the vote according to the National Election Authority, was held as&nbsp;Egypt&nbsp;struggles with a slow-burning economic crisis and tries to manage the risk of spillover from the war adjacent to&nbsp;Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.

Some voters said the eruption of conflict in Gaza had encouraged them to vote for Sisi, who has long presented himself as a bulwark of stability in a volatile region - an argument that has also proved effective with Gulf and Western allies providing financial support to his government.

"Egyptians lined up to vote not just to choose their president for the next term, but to express their rejection of this inhumane war to the entire world," Sisi said in a speech soon after the results were announced.

He said&nbsp;Egypt&nbsp;had to do all it could to stop the war between Israel and Gaza's ruling Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, describing it as his country's primary challenge.

Israel's heavy bombardment and invasion of the Gaza Strip, after an Hamas assault into Israel, has flattened much of the enclave and left most of its people homeless.&nbsp;Egypt&nbsp;has warned it will not allow any cross-border exodus of Gazans.

Voting in&nbsp;Egypt&nbsp;was held on Dec. 10-12, with the state and tightly controlled domestic media pushing hard to boost turnout, which the election authority said had reached 66.8% - above the 41% recorded at the last presidential election in 2018.

The election featured three other candidates, none of them high profile. The most prominent potential challenger halted his run in October, saying officials and thugs had targeted his supporters - accusations dismissed by the election Authority.

"There were no elections, Sisi used the entire state apparatus and security agencies to prevent any serious contender from even running," said Hossam Bahgat, head of the&nbsp;Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR), an independent group.

"Just like last time he handpicked his opponents who only went through the motions of running against the president with either muted or almost no criticism of his disastrous policies."

Egypt's state media body said the vote was a step towards political pluralism and authorities have denied violations of electoral rules.

Many people in the Arab world's most populous country expressed indifference about the election, saying the result was a foregone conclusion.

Reuters reporters witnessed voters being bussed into some polling stations and bags of food being handed out, while some voters said they were offered financial incentives. The state media body said any provision of money or goods in return for votes was a criminal offence.

CONSTITUTION AMENDED

Sisi, a former general, has overseen a sweeping crackdown on dissent across the political spectrum since leading the 2013 overthrow of&nbsp;Egypt's first democratically elected leader, Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood.

He was elected to the presidency in 2014, and re-elected in 2018, both times with 97% of the vote. The constitution was amended in 2019, extending the presidential term to six years from four, and allowing Sisi to stand for a third term.

Some admire an infrastructure drive including a new capital built from scratch in the desert east of Cairo. Others see the city as a costly extravagance at a time when&nbsp;Egypt's debt has swollen and prices have soared.

"I renew my pact with you, to together exert every effort to continue building the new republic, that we hope to erect according to a shared vision," Sisi said in a taped speech aired on state television with little fanfare.

Sisi's backers say security is paramount, and that some groups have benefited under his rule.

That included women, though there is more to be done, said Nourhan ElAbbassy, assistant secretary-general of the youth branch of the pro-Sisi Homat AlWatan party.

"We would love to see more females in key positions, more female ministers in the cabinet as long as they’re qualified, and revisions of personal rights laws that have to do with issues like marriage, divorce and alimony," she said.

Authorities have sought to address criticism of&nbsp;Egypt's human rights record with steps including opening a national dialogue and releasing some prominent prisoners. Critics have dismissed the moves as largely cosmetic.

In his speech, Sisi said the dialogue would continue "more effectively and efficiently".

<h2>What happened in downtown Austin?</h2>

The officers were responding to an incident in a bar on East 6th Street in the heart of the Texas capital shortly before midnight, said the Austin Police Department (APD) after they received a report about a person trying to enter the establishment with a gun, in violation of the Texas Penal Code.&nbsp;

An employee identified the suspect after the officers arrived and they approached him, said Austin Police Department Interim Chief Robin Henderson at a press briefing, on early Sunday (Dec 17).&nbsp;

The suspect pulled out a gun and pointed it at the responding officers as well as bystanders, he added. Subsequently, the three officers fired their weapons at the suspect, who was hit multiple times, and was later pronounced deceased, said the APD interim chief.&nbsp;

According to the police, three others were injured and taken to the hospital. One person suffered critical injuries, said Henderson, adding that others sustained injuries which were not considered life-threatening.&nbsp;

Several people were injured due to the chaos which broke out at the Tampa Premium Outlets after the fire alarm was triggered amid fears of an active shooter, on Sunday (Dec 17), reported the local media.&nbsp;

The fire alarm was activated around 4:30 pm (local time) prompting nearby residents to get alerts about a possible shooting in the area, said the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office. Subsequently, officers arrived at the scene but found no evidence of shooting.

The leading China critic is being tried on charges that he colluded with foreign forces, including the United States.

Meanwhile, United Kingdom’s Foreign Secretary and former Prime Minister David Cameron toughened the country’s stance on Sunday (Dec 17) by explicitly calling for the release of British national Lai.&nbsp;

<h2>About the trial</h2>

Lai’s long-awaited trial, which is expected to go on for months, opened in Hong Kong and is among the most high-profile prosecutions in the city’s government’s crackdown on opposition.&nbsp;

The 76-year-old was the founder of the now shut&nbsp;pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily and is one of the most prominent Hong Kong critics of China’s Communist Party leadership.&nbsp;

The trial in Hong Kong according to foreign envoys and others will be a key test for the city’s judicial independence and freedoms following the sweeping China-imposed national security law in 2020.

Lai has been accused of conspiring to collude with foreign forces to endanger national security and conspiring to publish seditious material. If convicted, he faces a sentence of up to life in prison.&nbsp;

The case of the 76-year-old pro-democracy activist, who has pleaded not guilty to all charges, will be heard by three national security judges handpicked by the government, Esther Toh, Susana D’Almada Remedios and Alex Lee.

<h2>Lai arrives at court</h2>

Lai arrived at the West Kowloon Court at around 7:30 am (local time) and was reportedly driven through the gates in a correctional services van. As of 8:15 am (local time), about 100 people had lined up for public gallery seats, ahead of the trial beginning at 10:00 am (local time).&nbsp;

The 76-year-old had been in jail since December 2020 for violating a lease contract and is serving a sentence of more than five years on fraud charges. The charge has been called politically motivated by his supporters.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, outside the court, the number of Hong Kong police officers outnumbered hundreds of Lai’s supporters in apparent anticipation of protests.&nbsp;

Law enforcement officials had been stationed outside the court since Sunday (Dec 17) and were reportedly equipped with bomb-sniffing dogs, a Chinese-made “Sabretooth” armoured vehicle, and a bomb-disposal van.&nbsp;

<h2>Britain, US call&nbsp;for Lai’s release</h2>

Cameron, who became foreign minister in November, condemned the “politically motivated prosecution” of the pro-democracy activist.&nbsp;

This comes after his son, Sebastien Lai has previously criticised Britain for being “incredibly weak” in standing up for his father. Sebastien also met with Cameron to discuss his father’s case.&nbsp;

At that time, Biden was walking from the campaign office to his waiting armoured SUV.

The sedan then tried to continue into a closed-off intersection, before the Secret Service personnel surrounded the vehicle with weapons drawn and instructed the driver to put his hands up.

The security personnel rushed the president into a waiting vehicle and was whisked away from the building in downtown Wilmington.

"Both the president and first lady are fine," a White House official told an AFP reporter who witnessed the incident. Further questions were referred to the US Secret Service.

Norway-based oil tanker group Frontline said its vessels would also start avoiding passages through the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

"War risk insurance premiums are on the rise naturally, but as vessels gets re-routed around Africa shipping supply will be tighter as cargoes travel longer. That would put rates under a strong upwards pressure," CEO Lars Barstad told Reuters.

The announcement followed decisions by two major freight firms including MSC, the world's biggest container shipping line, to&nbsp;avoid&nbsp;the Suez Canal in response to the attacks by Houthi forces, which control most of Yemen, a poor Arab state.

Russia, especially, focused on this scandal as well as on the woman, who had lived in the US and the UK. Russia gave the impression that Qin Gang was corrupted by a woman who was too close to the Western countries.
