In Canada, Toronto police on Monday (Jan 8) said that they have identified the killer&nbsp;who is allegedly responsible for a decades-old Toronto murder using investigative genetic genealogy.&nbsp;

This technology is an emerging practice that uses genetic information from direct-to-consumer companies to identify suspects or victims in criminal cases. This technology has been used to solve cold cases across the world.&nbsp;

Kevin McBride, who was 47 at the time, was the victim of a homicide in May 1982. He died from multiple stab wounds inside his apartment at 311-5600 Sheppard Ave East.&nbsp;

At that time, police said that McBride died from multiple stab wounds in his apartment. He lived alone and "was not associated with any criminality", the police had further added.&nbsp;

Police said that he was last seen on May 15, 1982, and two days after that his body was found. Police believed that he may have been killed the day he was last seen.&nbsp;

He had dinner plans with friends, but they said that they were unable to reach him and then they called the police, asking the authorities to check on McBride.&nbsp;

At the time of his death, the investigators said that his vehicle, a credit card, and other personal belongings had been stolen. They were used between May 15 and May 17 of that year.&nbsp;

The case remained closed. However, it was opened in 2016, when homicide case investigators tried to look for new evidence.&nbsp;

They again analysed seized items from the crime scene in the hope that "advancements in forensic testing and a DNA databank creation could determine any further leads".&nbsp;

They got a breakthrough in 2022 when police said that tests revealed a male profile belonging to a man named William Taylor, who died last year in May.&nbsp;

DNA testing confirmed Taylor, who was 34 years old at the time of the crime, was the source of the unknown DNA left at the scene.&nbsp;

Police said that "if William Taylor was alive today, he would be arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the death of Kevin McBride".&nbsp;

In 2023, according to the report, 33,846 non-combatants had been killed or wounded, the largest number it had counted since it began conducting its annual survey in 2010.&nbsp;

“Last year proved to be the most harmful to civilians from explosive violence since our monitor began in 2010,” Iain Overton, the group’s executive director.

Last year, the AOAV also identified at least 7,307 explosive incidents across the world, which is up from 4,322 recorded in 2022.&nbsp;

There was a 226 per cent rise in the use of air-launched weapons across the world in 2023, according to the London-based charity.&nbsp;

The report, according to the AOAV, is based on data collected from reputable media organisations.&nbsp;

AOAV describes the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza as a “major cause for such a dramatic increase” in civilian casualties accounting for around one-third of the global total.&nbsp;

While the staggering rise has mainly been attributed to the Israel-Hamas war, ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Sudan also contributed significantly to the total number of civilian casualties.&nbsp;

Speaking about the ongoing war in Gaza, Overton noted that since Hamas launched its surprise attack against Israel, on October 7 there had been “a massive spike” in incidents during Israel’s retaliatory attacks.&nbsp;

He added, “Gaza almost overwhelmed our capacity to record each individual and injurious reported strike.”

The AOAV director also said that the data should be a stark warning to states that using explosive weapons in urban areas disproportionately impacts civilians.&nbsp;

The report also dubbed Israel as the “most injurious state actor in 2023” with more than 1,000 attacks leading to 12,950 civilian casualties, both killed and injured. Israel’s Swords of Iron operation reportedly accounted for 37 per cent of all civilian casualties last year.&nbsp;

Israel was followed by Russia with its war in Ukraine causing 8,351 civilian casualties, according to AOAV.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, officials said that the death toll from the 7.6 magnitude earthquake which struck central Japan on January 1 crossed the 200-mark on Tuesday.&nbsp;

The rise in death toll reported by the Ishikawa regional authorities came as thousands of rescuers deployed in the region continued to battle blocked roads, snow, and poor weather to clear the wreckage.&nbsp;

The rescue efforts have continued for eight days now, as nearly 3,500 people are still stuck in isolated communities, with heavy snow in places making matters worse.&nbsp;

As of Monday (Jan 8), there were nearly 30,000 people living in around 400 government shelters which are struggling to provide adequate food, water and heating.&nbsp;

At least 60,000 households were without running water and 15,600 had no electricity supply, reported news agency AFP citing officials.&nbsp;

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida instructed ministers, on Tuesday (Jan 9), to “make efforts of resolving the state of isolation (of communities) and continue tenacious rescue activities.”&nbsp;

He also urged secondary evacuations to other regions outside the quake-hit area, top government spokesman Yoshimasa Hayashi told reporters.
