This comes days after former United States president Donald Trump implied he would not defend the NATO allies who have not been able to spend enough on defence and would also encourage Russia to attack them.&nbsp;

A 39-year-old man has become the first person in England and Wales to be convicted of cyber flashing. The man, a resident of Essex, has been convicted under the Online Safety Act for sending unsolicited images of his exposed male genitalia to a teenage girl and a woman.&nbsp;

<h2>The conviction</h2>

Nicholas Hawkes was arrested after screenshots of his unsolicited images were shared with the police. The woman, as per media reports, had taken screenshots of the WhatsApp image and shared them with the Essex Police.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) revealed that the images were sent on February 9th and a complaint was registered the same day.

Hawkes had also sent pictures of his genitalia to a 15-year-old girl.

On Monday, at the Southend magistrate's court, he admitted to two counts of sending a photograph or film of genitals to cause alarm, distress, or humiliation.

As per reports, Hawkes was already a registered sex offender, and will remain so until November 2033. Last year, he was convicted of sexual activity with a child under 16 and exposure at Basildon Crown Court.

<h2>What is cyber flashing?</h2>

Talking to the press, Sefer Mani of CPS East of England called cyber flashing a "grotesque crime".&nbsp;He said that the "fact we were able to deliver swift justice for the two victims shows the new law is working."

"Everyone should feel safe wherever they are and not be subjected to receiving unwanted sexual images," added Mani.

The CPS officer also urged victims of cyber flashing to come forward and report it to the police.

"I urge anyone who feels they have been a victim of cyber flashing to report it to the police and know that they will be taken seriously and have their identities protected," he said.

Cyber flashing, as per The Standard, is a form of digital harassment or sexual misconduct that involves sharing unsolicited images or videos of genitalia or other intimate body parts. This is done via electronic means and can be done over text, emails, messaging apps, social media or even using the airdrop feature on smartphones.&nbsp;

A main aspect of such messages is the lack of the recipient's consent. It can be distressing and traumatic for those at the receiving end, and the sexually explicit images can cause emotional harm. It constitutes a violation of privacy.

<h2>UK's Online Safety Act</h2>

In January 2024, the United Kingdom made into law the Online Safety Act, under which a variety of online crimes are included, among them being cyber flashing.

In England and Wales, cyber flashing became a crime starting on January 31st. As per SkyNews, it has been a crime in Scotland since 2010.

As per the Government of UK website, those found guilty of sharing an intimate image can be imprisoned for up to 6 months, or 2 years "if it is proven the perpetrator also intended to cause distress, alarm or humiliation, or shared the image to obtain sexual gratification."

Furthermore, cyber flashing "on dating apps, AirDrop and other platforms will also result in perpetrators facing up to two years behind bars where it is done to gain sexual gratification or to cause alarm, distress, or humiliation."

Under the law, victims of cyber flashing and image-based abuse automatically receive lifelong anonymity from the point they report the offence.

<h2>Cyber-flashing laws around the world</h2>

- In May 2017, in New South Wales, Australia, The Crimes Amendment (Intimate Images) Bill 2017 was implemented. Under the law, it is a crime to "intentionally record or distribute, or threaten to record or distribute, an intimate image of a person without their consent".

This legislation also covers cyber flashing by its prohibition on the non-consensual sharing of&nbsp;intimate images.

- In Singapore, sending unsolicited intimate images, or "cyber flashing," has been a punishable crime since May 2019. As per the estimates by NATO in July last year, 11 members were most likely to meet the 2 per cent target in 2023. These members include&nbsp;Poland, the United States, Greece, Estonia, Lithuania, Finland, Romania, Hungary, Latvia, Britain and Slovakia.

Europe's economic heavyweight - Germany - was most likely to spend 1.57 per cent on defence. However, the German officials claimed that they were hoping to meet the 2 per cent target, especially due to a special 1-billion-euro fund which was established in response to Russia's war in Ukraine.

According to NATO figures, the countries which contributed the lowest shares of their GDP on defence were Spain, Belgium and Luxembourg.&nbsp;

Cancun crackdown: Police bust drug syndicate that hacked to death 5 people with machete

The uncle of Mahsa Amini, who was a young Iranian-Kurdish woman and had died in custody igniting months-long protests, has been sentenced to more than five years of imprisonment for criticising the government in 2022, said the rights groups.

30-year-old Safa Aeli was sentenced to five years and four months of imprisonment by the revolutionary court in the family’s home town of Saqez which is located in north-western Iran, said the Norway-based Hengaw group and US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA).

Aeli had to also face sanctions, which included a highly unusual demand to produce a written document which outlines the biography of a security force member who had lost his life in the protest and later submit his “own personal interpretation” of the completed document to the judicial authorities, said Hengaw.

Amini's uncle was also given the order to share a voice message regarding the work on his social media accounts. In case, he failed to do that he was to be banned from expressing any views regarding the protests.

22-year-old Mahsa Amini died in hospital in September 2022 after she was arrested for allegedly flouting Islamic code of dressing for women in the Islamic Republic.&nbsp;

The family of Amini and the activists have claimed that she was killed after she suffered a blow on her head while she was in custody. Iranian officials have denied the claims.&nbsp;

HRANA, quoting family lawyer Saleh Nikbakht, said that part of the prison sentence given to Aeli was suspended and he is now needs to remain in prison for three years and six months.

The charges against Aeli include dissemination of anti-government propaganda, insulting supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and participating in the protests which violated internal security.

In case, he failed to do that he was to be banned from expressing any views regarding the protests. 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died in hospital in September 2022 after she was arrested for allegedly flouting Islamic code of dressing for women in the Islamic Republic. Israel has denied all allegations of genocide in connection with its war against Gaza's ruling Palestinian Islamist group Hamas and asked the court to reject the case outright, saying it respects international law and has a right to defend itself.

Israel has said it is planning to expand its ground assault into Rafah, where over 1 million Palestinians have sought refuge from the offensive that has laid waste to much of the Gaza Strip since Hamas militants attacked Israel on October 7.

"In a request submitted to the court yesterday (Feb. 12), the South African government said it was gravely concerned that the unprecedented military offensive against Rafah, as announced by the State of Israel, has already led to and will result in further large-scale killing, harm and destruction," a statement issued by South Africa's presidency said.

"This would be in serious and irreparable breach both of the Genocide Convention and of the Court's Order of Jan. 26."

The Hague-based ICJ declined to comment on whether it had received the request.

Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine nearly two years ago, the three Baltic nations Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have demolished most of their Soviet-era monuments.&nbsp;

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called the recent move “only the beginning,” adding that &nbsp;“Crimes against the memory of the world’s liberators from Nazism and fascism must be prosecuted.”&nbsp;

The Kremlin has said those placed on the “wanted” list by the Russian police had taken “hostile actions against historical memory” and Russia.

In addition to the Estonian PM, Estonia’s State Secretary Taimar Peterkop, and Karol Nawrocki, the head of Poland’s Institute of National Remembrance, were also added to the “wanted” list, according to the Russian media. &nbsp;

A report by Reuters, citing the Russian interior ministry’s database, said the list also includes 60 of the 100 members of the previous Latvian parliament, including former Interior Minister Marija Golubeva. The previous parliament’s term ended in November 2022.

Meanwhile, Lithuanian Culture Minister Simonas Kairys who was also included in the list has since slammed Russia accusing it of distorting facts.&nbsp;

“The regime is doing what it has always done: it is trying to stifle freedom...and to continue to create its own version that is at odds with facts or logic,” he told AFP.

In response to Moscow’s move, Kallas on Tuesday slammed Russian “scare tactics” and called it unsurprising. “The Russian Federation's move isn't surprising because this is their usual scare tactics,” said the Estonian PM in a statement.&nbsp;

She also vowed to further support war-torn Ukraine and fight “Russian propaganda”.&nbsp;

In addition to the “wanted” list, the head of the Russian Investigative Committee, Alexander Bastrykin has since ordered a criminal investigation into the matter. However, the Russian interior ministry database did not specify under which article of the criminal code the wanted are prosecuted.

The dozens of Baltic officials, including mayors, and municipal deputies who are included in the “wanted” list, according to Russian state news agency TASS have been accused of “destroying monuments to Soviet soldiers,” which is punishable by a five-year prison term under the Russian criminal code.

However, the Baltic politicians and the Estonian PM would not be arrested unless they enter Russian territory.

The Soviet-era monuments which were destroyed also included those commemorating Soviet soldiers killed in World War II. The Baltic states were annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940, then occupied by Nazi Germany before returning to Russian rule as part of the Soviet Communist bloc until its collapse in 1991.&nbsp;

<h2>Estonia’s warning for the West&nbsp;</h2>

On Tuesday, the Estonian Foreign Intelligence Service in its national security threats report, warned that Russia is preparing for a military confrontation with the West within the next decade.&nbsp;

“Russia has chosen a path which is a long-term confrontation...and the Kremlin is probably anticipating a possible conflict with NATO within the next decade or so,” Kaupo Rosin told reporters.&nbsp;

“If we are not prepared, the likelihood (of a military Russian attack) would be much higher than without any preparation,” Rosin added.

However, the report also noted that a military attack by Russia in the short term is “highly unlikely” given that Moscow has to keep troops in Ukraine, but it&nbsp;plans to double the number of forces stationed along its border with NATO members Finland and the three Baltic nations.&nbsp;
