There was loud applause, cheering, and standing ovation at the joint session as most French lawmakers celebrated the final approval needed to make the right to abortion an explicit protection in the country’s constitution.&nbsp;

The change was also celebrated in central Paris where abortion rights activists had gathered and applauded as the Eiffel Tower was illuminated to mark the occasion and displayed the message “MyBodyMyChoice” after the vote.&nbsp;

Abortion rights are more widely accepted in France than in most other countries with recent polls indicating that 80 per cent of French people back the fact that abortion is legal.&nbsp;

President Emmanuel Macron described the move as “French pride” and said that it sends a “universal message”. He also announced a special public ceremony planned for International Women’s Day on March 8 to celebrate the move.

The vote on Monday has enshrined in Article 34 of the French constitution that “the law determines the conditions in which a woman has the guaranteed freedom to have recourse to an abortion”.

“We’re sending a message to all women: your body belongs to you and no one can decide for you,” Prime Minister Gabriel Attal told lawmakers ahead of the vote urging them to pass the legislation. He added that this is a “fundamental step... A step that will go down in history.”

The measure had already been passed in both the Senate and the National Assembly. Notably, joint sessions are rare in France. Monday’s session is the first to be held to change the constitution since 2008.&nbsp;

Right-wing leader Marine Le Pen accused Macron of passing the legislation to gain political points due to the large support for the right to abortion in France.&nbsp;

“We will vote to include it in the Constitution because we have no problem with that,” Le Pen told reporters ahead of Monday’s vote, but also called it an exaggeration since “no one is putting the right to abortion at risk in France.”

In his speech, the French PM spoke about how the right to abortion remains in “danger” across the world. “In one generation, one year, one week, you can go from one thing to the opposite,” said Attal referring to rights reversals in the US, Hungary and Poland.

Meanwhile, anti-abortion protesters gathered in Versailles near the palace to oppose the move.&nbsp;

Pascale Moriniere, the president of the Association of Catholic Families, told Reuters how the move marked a defeat for anti-abortion campaigners.

The Philippines’ South China Sea task force said Manila’s vessels were carrying out the routine resupply mission for Filipino troops stationed there before they were “harassed (and) blocked” by Chinese maritime militia and coast guard ships.&nbsp;

Chinese vessels fired a water cannon which shattered the windshield of one of the resupply boats and caused minor injuries to at least four crew members, said the officials in Manila.&nbsp;

The incident has since prompted Manila to summon Beijing’s diplomat to protest what it called “aggressive actions” by Chinese naval forces and demanded that the Chinese vessels immediately leave the vicinity of the Second Thomas Shoal – which Manila calls Ayungin.&nbsp;

“China’s interference with the Philippines’ routine and lawful activities in its own exclusive economic zone (EEZ) is unacceptable,” said the Philippine foreign ministry in a statement. It added that Beijing’s actions “infringes upon the Philippines’ sovereign rights and jurisdiction.”

Jay Tarriela, the PCG spokesperson took to X and shared images and videos of the incident which showed that a Chinese vessel cut across the bow of the Philippine resupply ship, while the Filipino crew rushed to drop a buoy between the vessels to stop the collision.&nbsp;

“Their (Chinese vessels’) reckless and illegal actions led to a collision between MRRV-4407 and China Coast Guard 21555 that resulted to minor structural damage to the PCG vessel,” said Tarriela.&nbsp;

Russian election law requires candidates to attain at least 100,000 signatures to qualify to run for the presidency. The 60-year-old had garnered 105,000 signatures with opposing the war in Ukraine being a key part of his campaign.

However, in late February, the Central Election Commission declared more than 9,000 of the signatures submitted by Nadezhdin’s campaign invalid, which was enough to get him disqualified from the race.&nbsp;

Over the years, Russian elections, tightly controlled by the Kremlin, have reportedly been marred by the exclusion of opposition candidates, voter intimidation, and even ballot stuffing.&nbsp;

"The mission team found clear and convincing information that some hostages taken to Gaza have been subjected to various forms of conflict-related sexual violence and has reasonable grounds to believe that such violence may be ongoing," said the report.

The UN team added that a "full-fledged investigation" is needed to determine these crimes' full extent and specific attribution.

<h2>Sexual violence against Palestinians</h2>

They also said that they have received reports of sexual violence against Palestinian men and women "in detention settings" — at centres located in Israel, "during house raids and at checkpoints" after Oct 7. Sources of these reports have been mentioned as institutional and civil society sources and direct interviews.

Israeli Ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan strongly criticised the international body for its delayed recognition of sexual crimes.&nbsp;

He said that it took the UN five months to "finally recognise the horrifying sex crimes that occurred during the Hamas onslaught".

"Now that the report of the sexual atrocities and abuse that our hostages are going through in Gaza is being released, the shame of the silence of the UN — which is not even holding one hearing on the issue — is crying out to the heavens," Erdan stated.

In response to the UN's perceived inaction, Foreign Minister Israel Katz announced that he would recall Erdan to Israel for discussions on how to proceed.&nbsp;

However, Guterres's spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, refuted claims that the secretary-general was trying to suppress the report.&nbsp;

Local authorities revealed that an anti-tank missile hit a plantation in Margaliot, a Moshav at around 11:00 am (local time) on Monday in the Galilee region in the north of Israel.

Initial reports didn't reveal the identity but later it was confirmed that the missile killed 30-year-old Patnibin Maxwell from Kollam in Kerala.&nbsp;

Bush Joseph George (31) from Vazhathope; and Paul Melvin (28) from Vagamon in Kerala were injured and rushed taken to hospitals for treatment.&nbsp;

It is believed, that the attack was carried out by the Shi'ite Hezbollah faction in Lebanon. The Israeli military and Lebanese organisations have exchanged fire almost on an everyday basis ever since the Israel-Hamas war started after the October 7 attack, when Hamas militants stormed southern Israel.&nbsp;

The report described the figure of 834 as a "staggering total", with IHR director Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam claiming in the report: "Instilling societal fear is the regime's only way to hold on to power, and the death penalty is its most important instrument."&nbsp;

The groups have also accused the Tehran government of using the death penalty to spread fear throughout society in the wake of the protests sparked by the September 2022 death of Mahsa Amini in police custody.&nbsp;

Her death in custody led to massive protests and some reports have even suggested that she was detained for wearing her headscarf in an "improper" way. After that protesters from all walks of life participated, with students and women playing a key role.&nbsp;

Messages such as "My sweet Dave, thanks for the valuable information," and "you are my secret informant love!" were allegedly exchanged in subsequent communications.

The documents do not specify the identity of the person Slater was in contact with or the name of the foreign dating website involved. However, the FBI and Air Force Office of Special Investigations have conducted the investigation.

US Attorney Susan Lehr for the District of Nebraska said in a statement: "Certain responsibilities are incumbent to individuals with access to Top Secret information," raising concerns about whether Slater betrayed these responsibilities.

The retired colonel faces charges of conspiracy and two counts of unauthorized disclosure of national defense information, potentially resulting in a prison term of up to 10 years if found guilty.

The case coincides with another incident&nbsp;where a US airman from the Massachusetts Air National Guard, Jack Teixeira, pleaded guilty to six counts of illegally retaining and transmitting US defence information.

Teixeira could face up to 16 years in prison.
