The United States military says it has destroyed 16 Iranian mine-laying boats in the Strait of Hormuz. The vessels were believed to be capable of deploying naval mines in the strategic waterway.
U.S. officials said the operation was aimed at safeguarding commercial shipping and preventing threats to maritime traffic moving through the strait. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints, carrying a major share of global oil and LNG shipments.
The strikes come amid the ongoing conflict with Iran, which has disrupted shipping in the region and heightened concerns over global energy supplies.
