Student suicides in India have surged to a record 13,892 in 2023, a 64.9% increase over the last decade, according to NCRB data.
Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu report the highest numbers.
Experts cite academic pressure, family expectations, and emotional challenges as key factors.
The government has launched helplines including Manodarpan and Tele MANAS, while the Supreme Court has set up a task force to strengthen mental health support in educational institutions.
