Scientists have successfully constructed a synthetic cell from scratch using nonliving chemical components. Led by professor Kate Adamala at the University of Minnesota, the team created a fragile, prototype cell capable of feeding, growing, and replicating like a natural organism. The creation could help scientists understand the origins of life and be programmed to address major global biological issues.
