India to dispatch an infantry battalion for UN's peacekeeping ops in Africa
India will dispatch an infantry battalion for the United Nation's peacekeeping operations in the oil rich Abyei region in Africa. It's an area which straddles northern and southern Sudan and is hotly contested by both. The Indian infantry group with around 570 soldiers will be deployed under the UN interim security force for Abyei, it is tasked with monitoring the volatile border between north and south Sudan.
