Hundreds of women in the UK are suffering life-altering effects, including partial paralysis and severe pain, after anti-wrinkle injections with botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT), commonly known as Botox. Forty-one cases of botulism poisoning were recorded in England this summer alone. Now campaigners are warning about the dangers of unregulated cosmetic procedures, calling for greater awareness of the potentially lethal consequences of BoNT. The UK government has introduced rules requiring face-to-face consultations and plans to launch a licensing scheme for cosmetic injectables, amid rising hospital admissions.
