<p>For actor Arjun Mathur getting nominated for 'Made In Heaven' at the upcoming International Emmys is a big validation in itself, not just for him but many other actors like him who may not be in blockbuster films,&nbsp; but are doing great work.</p>

<p>"Just this nomination is a win for many actors like me, who have been attempting to keep their focus on good content. And there hasn't necessarily been a lot of commercial validation on this part. But an acknowledgement like this just makes you feel that 'Okay, good, we're doing the right thing, we got to stay on this path'. And because eventually, that's what's going to put us and our country on the world stage," said Mathur during an exclusive chat with WION.</p>

<p>Mathur is the first Indian actor to have earned a nomination in the Best Actor category at International Emmys which honours best on TV and web made outside the US.</p>

<p>The actor who has been part of some interesting films like 'Luck By Chance', 'Ankur Arora Murder Case' and 'My Name Is Khan' gained stardom in 2019 with Zoya Akhtar's web series 'Made In Heaven' where he played wedding planner Kabir Mehra.</p>

<p>Despite having delivered stellar work in the past, Mathur's moment under the spotlight came with 'Made In Heaven'. Does that ever bother him, we asked? "Well, it's part of the journey. Certainly, there are times when I might have felt disappointed that I'm working hard and something's not clicking or whatever. But even so, I was always happy and confident in the choices I was making. It doesn't matter. Because here I am today. Look, a journey is a journey. I don't resent a journey just because it took a certain amount of time. The slower one to me, honestly are much more respectable in my eyes," said the actor.</p>

<p>Mathur states that he is happy that post the success of 'Made In Heaven' people are curious to see his older work and says, "I value my successes also much more. And I also don't take my failures to heart."</p>

<p>Mathur, who worked with Zoya Akhtar in 'Luck By Chance' underwent a few rounds of the audition before the role came to him. While the creators Nitya Mehra and Zoya Akhtar wanted him from the beginning, it took them a while to convince Amazon. Mathur says he was not aware that the character offered to him was that of a gay man. When he was told that he would be playing a gay character, Arjun initially was reluctant to take it up. "I had played homosexual twice before in my career. And had already challenged myself with that. I don't know if I want to do it for the third time. Told Zoya maybe other actors should also get this opportunity and challenge themselves but she asked me to read it, and I just read all the episodes once overnight, and by the time I was done, I was just thanking my stars that this had come to me."</p>

<p>Mathur played a gay character in his first film- a short by Mira Nair called 'Migration' where he played Irrfan Khan's lover. He then eventually played a homosexual character in Onir's critically acclaimed film 'I Am'. The actor says the challenge was to overcome the barriers in his mind to play such characters. "After I read the script of 'Made In Heaven' that I thought that as long as in my mind, I'm still drawing a barrier about this character, I don't think I can say rightfully, that I truly am a supporter of the community and do justice to the role either."</p>

<p>Mathur's process of working for 'Made In Heaven' made him overcome barriers in his mind. "I decided to never look at a part again, as a gay part or a straight part, it's a human part first and foremost. I'm ready to do it 10 more times in my career provided, it is always treated with the same kind of sensitivity and love that these particular filmmakers have done like Onir or Meera or Zoya. As filmmakers, they have acute sensibility. And you can trust them, that they are not interested in misrepresenting the community," Mathur said.</p>

<p>Mathur also shot for an intimate scene with actor Vikrant Massey in the show, which many would agree was shot beautifully. Mathur recalls that the brief that was given to the two actors was an emotional one. To me it was not meeting this man, but the love of my life and so the brief was similar.</p>

<p>Mathur credits the episode director Alankrita Srivastava and DOP of that scene John Jacob for shooting the scene so beautifully and aesthetically. Mathur revealed that the crew has plans to reunite for the second season of the successful series.</p>

<p>"I don't have an answer as to when the second season will be out but scripts were being readied and we were supposed to go on floors in May but the lockdown was announced and things came to a standstill."</p>

<p>Mathur who also won praise recently for the series 'Gone Game' admits to being picky when it comes to choosing projects. He confirmed that he is prepping for the season 2 of the series which was shot during the lockdown. The actor also has two films in the pipeline which will resume productions soon.</p>

<p>Commenting on the ongoing debate around OTT vs Cinema, Mathur said he saw the two mediums co-existing in near future. "I don't think cinema can ever die because like it's just too much a part of our history and culture."</p>

<p>As of now, Mathur is gearing up for November 23, when the International Emmy Awards are scheduled to take place. And like most of his fans, hoping to create history at the ceremony.</p>

<p>Watching the rich go on with their lives in over dramatic scenarios in opulent sets that they call homes is something that we Indians are used to. For decades, Ekta Kapoor and the likes have been churning out TV shows that have large Indian business families dealing with problems in their opulent homes wearing outlandish costumes and makeup at all times of the day. So what makes Zoya Akhtar's latest web series for Amazon Prime -'Made In &nbsp;Heaven' stand out?</p>

<p>It ticks a few boxes that make for a hit TV show. It talks of the rich business families, the show has larger than life, luxurious sets and an ensemble cast. But the show, streaming now on Amazon Prime, goes beyond the glamour and the glitz and peeps right into the dysfunctionality that lies in the lives of the urban rich. Where on the surface everything looks picture perfect but when you look closely you realise that everyone is trying to hide a deep, dark secret and no one is purely black or white.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The show centers around friends and partners Karan (Arjun Mathur) and Tara Khanna (Sobhita Dhulipala) who run a wedding planning company called 'Made In Heaven'. &nbsp;Tara is a trophy wife-hailing from a lower-middle class family, she has earned love and respectability in the society thanks to her husband, Adil (Jim Sarbh) a young business tycoon. While Tara has got all the comforts in the world, her past makes her insecure about her present life and she is always on the edge because of it. Kabir, meanwhile, is a closet gay, who has his set of problems to deal with. And while they trudge around with their personal problems, ( which are in plenty), they together make their company flourish- organising high profile weddings and on the way dealing with extraordinary situations.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The series has 9 episodes, each an hour long where Kabir and Tara meet new clients and in turn deal with unexpected situations. Written by Alankrita Srivastava and created by Akhtar and Reema Kagti- the episodes deal with very pertinent problems- from dowry to class divide to honour killing and homosexuality.</p>

<p>In fact, 'Made In Heaven' is perhaps the first show that talks about the LGBTQ community with so much ease. The lead character is gay who has so much going on in his life. He has to come out to his parents, he needs to answer the prying landlord and he has to bury his turbulent past. For a change, an Indian show doesn't show a gay man with stereotypical effeminate traits and tries to highlight the various complexities the gay community has to deal with even in urban areas where p[eople may claim to be open and liberal yet squirm talking about homosexuality.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Since it's created by Zoya Akhtar, several prominent stars play pivotal cameos in the series. These actors, together with the lead cast that comprises of Kalki Koechlin, Jim Sarbh, Shashank Arora and Shivani Raghuvanshi along with Dhulipala and Mathur deliver compelling performances - making the show very engaging and real.&nbsp;</p>

<p>There are of course some drawbacks. It's a show about two wedding planners but often they turn into crusaders dealing with all the issues that Indian society is plagued with. The show is supposed to be based in Delhi yet the characters, the look - the ambiance looks and feels like Mumbai. There is also a narration at the end of each episode by Arora's character which is unnecessary and preachy and spoils the experience of viewing.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Despite the issues, I'd say 'Made In Heaven' makes for a good watch. It's entertaining- look out for the episode that features 'Fukrey' actors Pulkit Samrat and Manjot Singh- mounted on a lavish scale which pleases the eye and calls out the issues that plague our urban society till date. It tones down the melodrama to a great extent and shows us that the superficial 'heaven' that people painstakingly create is not so 'safe' or perfect all the time.&nbsp;</p>

These actors, together with the lead cast that comprises of Kalki Koechlin, Jim Sarbh, Shashank Arora and Shivani Raghuvanshi along with Dhulipala and Mathur deliver compelling performances - making the show very engaging and real. There are of course some drawbacks. It's a show about two wedding planners but often they turn into crusaders dealing with all the issues that Indian society is plagued with. The show is supposed to be based in Delhi yet the characters, the look - the ambiance looks and feels like Mumbai. There is also a narration at the end of each episode by Arora's character which is unnecessary and preachy and spoils the experience of viewing. Despite the issues, I'd say 'Made In Heaven' makes for a good watch. It's entertaining- look out for the episode that features 'Fukrey' actors Pulkit Samrat and Manjot Singh- mounted on a lavish scale which pleases the eye and calls out the issues that plague our urban society till date. It tones down the melodrama to a great extent and shows us that the superficial 'heaven' that people painstakingly create is not so 'safe' or perfect all the time.

<p>With so many new actors coming to fore in Bollywood, we will now get to see more number of fresh pairings. One of them will be Vijay Varma who was last seen in ‘Gully Boy’ and Janhvi Kapoor who made her debut with ‘Dhadak’.&nbsp;</p>

She said 'Moeen is a survivor, a rat, can even survive a volcano. He makes things happen for himself but he doesn’t have any place to go to.' That information was very crucial for me."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Varma recalls how Ranveer, with whom he had all his scenes, helped him to improvise in certain scenes. "While rehearsing the scene where the boys are at the Benetton store, my lines were simple. '10 lakh ke liye toh Moeen bhai rap karenga, tum log sab baaju waaju hatt jao’. Ranveer said, 'Moeen should break into a gig- which I thought was a great suggestion. So I went back home, prepared something in my head and came for the shoot- now Moeen doesn’t know a word of English, he doesn’t understand a word of what these guys do but understand the rhythm. I am personally a fan of Snoop Dogg, so I decided to mix his style and deliver the lines with some sound effects like 'Waao waao' and everyone had a good laugh over it- which was eventually captured in the scene" recalls the actor. "I met Murad on the sets every day while we were shooting and not Ranveer Singh. I am not exaggerating about this. I saw the energetic Ranveer only at the wrap party. He was inquisitive, underplayed his role and between the shots remained in character- shy and reserved."&nbsp;</p>

Also, I am not very conventional in the way I appear or the way I think, so I ensure I'm with those people who think on the same level. Rather than going into a genre where people don’t trust me with, want to roles where people have faith in me and my abilities."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The actor though admits that lines between art house and commercial cinema are blurring. "Glad it is happening now, while I am in my primes. I can only be happier. I have grown up on a staple diet of some great cinema from across the world and witnessed some great performances so I’d like to do that. I am playing for the long run. I am here for that. There was a debate on social media about the change in the lyrics of 'Azadi', which musician Dub Sharma created in 2016 after student leader Kanhaiya Kumar made the slogan popular during a protest in Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University.&nbsp;<br />

The lyrics had words such as 'Aazadi... Manuvaad se', Aazadi Brahmanvaad se', but these lines are missing in the 'Gully Boy' track which has tweaked the original.&nbsp;Zoya said they changed the lyrics to suit the context of the film and its character.<br />

"My story is about class, about feeling oppressed by your class. It is about economic disparity, the divide between rich and poor. It represents the point of view of my character and his engagement with the society, his socio-economic space and his anger. My film is not about the caste system or JNU."</p>

<p>The director was speaking to a news agency ahead of the film's release. Freedom, Akhtar said, is a word that was used way before JNU and will continue to be used.&nbsp;<br />

"Frankly, there is no voice in the mainstream that represents the urban youth and that's what attracted me to the story. Their rap is conscious of its space and it is conscious of where it exists. It is honest, truthful and personal. They are the artistes who speak about their socio-economic space, about the system and how it treats them," Zoya told PTI in an interview.<br />

The 46-year-old says she grew up listening to classic hip-hop artistes such as Tupac Shakur, 50 Cent and Eminem but the mainstream Indian hip-hop scene never attracted her until she chanced upon a track by Divine and Naezy.<br />

"There are youngsters who are kind of frustrated because they are not even allowed to pursue their dreams... They have to figure out how they get by in their day-to-day life. There is a huge population that falls in this bracket and hip-hop resonates with them."&nbsp;<br />

Zoya says she does not concern herself with how people bracket her as a filmmaker. As a filmmaker, she is drawn to conflicts.<br />

"At the end of my life, I want to have a body of work that has everything. My next job is for Amazon and again it is about rich people, wedding planning. I want to do all kind of films. I don't want to be bracketed into one kind of cinema and if somebody does that, then it is on them," she said.&nbsp;<br />

According to Zoya, if you are good at your job and resonate emotionally with people and there are conflicts that you can connect to, your work will find its audience. "Ultimately, we are all human beings and the rest is just the backdrop,"&nbsp;she said.<br />

The story of an underprivileged artiste finding his path through hip-hop led to some comparisons with Eminem's '8 Mile', but Zoya dismisses speculation that her film has anything to do with the Hollywood movie.<br />

"When 'Zindagi' was coming out, everybody said that it is 'Hangover'. I got very upset at that time but then it released and everyone forgot about it. I understand the comparison with '8 Mile' because that's their only reference point. Also, he comes from the underprivileged space and the rap battle, the tropes are similar. But there is no similarity."</p>

There was a debate on social media about the change in the lyrics of 'Azadi', which musician Dub Sharma created in 2016 after student leader Kanhaiya Kumar made the slogan popular during a protest in Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University. The lyrics had words such as 'Aazadi... Manuvaad se', Aazadi Brahmanvaad se', but these lines are missing in the 'Gully Boy' track which has tweaked the original. Zoya said they changed the lyrics to suit the context of the film and its character. "My story is about class, about feeling oppressed by your class. It is about economic disparity, the divide between rich and poor. It represents the point of view of my character and his engagement with the society, his socio-economic space and his anger. My film is not about the caste system or JNU." The director was speaking to a news agency ahead of the film's release. Freedom, Akhtar said, is a word that was used way before JNU and will continue to be used. "It has been used for women's movement, for caste disparity, against the system and whatever the oppressed community feels strongly about... But it would have been fake on my part if I had just taken the original song and monetised it." The woman behind 'Dil Dhadakne Do', which explored varied relationships of the rich and mighty on a cruise ship, and 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara', about three friends on a road trip through Spain, has gone over to the other side with her 'Gully Boy' that talks about Mumbai's hip hop scene. The Ranveer Singh-Alia Bhatt starrer examines how street music becomes a way for struggling urban youth to project their anger in a system where the odds are stacked against them. "Frankly, there is no voice in the mainstream that represents the urban youth and that's what attracted me to the story. Their rap is conscious of its space and it is conscious of where it exists. It is honest, truthful and personal. They are the artistes who speak about their socio-economic space, about the system and how it treats them," Zoya told PTI in an interview. The 46-year-old says she grew up listening to classic hip-hop artistes such as Tupac Shakur, 50 Cent and Eminem but the mainstream Indian hip-hop scene never attracted her until she chanced upon a track by Divine and Naezy. The story of the two rappers from the chawls of Kurla in Mumbai serves as the inspiration for 'Gully Boy', played by Ranveer Singh. Zoya says she realised she could use hip-hop to tell a larger story about urban youth and their frustrations. "There are youngsters who are kind of frustrated because they are not even allowed to pursue their dreams... They have to figure out how they get by in their day-to-day life. There is a huge population that falls in this bracket and hip-hop resonates with them." Zoya says she does not concern herself with how people bracket her as a filmmaker. As a filmmaker, she is drawn to conflicts. "At the end of my life, I want to have a body of work that has everything. My next job is for Amazon and again it is about rich people, wedding planning. I want to do all kind of films. I don't want to be bracketed into one kind of cinema and if somebody does that, then it is on them," she said. According to Zoya, if you are good at your job and resonate emotionally with people and there are conflicts that you can connect to, your work will find its audience. "Ultimately, we are all human beings and the rest is just the backdrop," she said. The story of an underprivileged artiste finding his path through hip-hop led to some comparisons with Eminem's '8 Mile', but Zoya dismisses speculation that her film has anything to do with the Hollywood movie. "When 'Zindagi' was coming out, everybody said that it is 'Hangover'. I got very upset at that time but then it released and everyone forgot about it. I understand the comparison with '8 Mile' because that's their only reference point. Also, he comes from the underprivileged space and the rap battle, the tropes are similar. But there is no similarity."

<p>He discovers a talent for rapping and uses it to vent his anger about poverty and the chasm between rich and poor, writing lines about babies cowering next to skyscrapers and wealthy people's cars being big as poor people's homes.</p>

<p>"This film is something that takes a genre of music that has essentially been underground in India so far and brings it to the mainstream," Singh said.</p>

<p>"I want this to be the beginning of something because I really think Hindustani hip-hop is a revolution. It's more than just music. It's a musical and social revolution," he said.</p>

<p>Singh said he grew up listening to rap music and it "feels amazing" to have recorded five songs for the film's soundtrack.</p>

<p>The coming-of-age film depicts a young man who refuses to accept what his father has taught him - that he cannot afford big dreams and should get a stable office job - and who defies class conventions by secretly dating Safeena (Alia Bhatt), a doctor's daughter.</p>

<p>Safeena is confident and violently attacks potential love rivals while Murad is a more sensitive and reserved character.</p>

<p>"Traditionally our films and gender dynamics are structured very differently," Singh said. "So that's an aspect of our film that we're very proud of."</p>

<p>He said he initially wanted to become an actor to be a virtuous hero with big muscles who beats other men up and stands up for what is right, but Akhtar had brought out a part of him on screen that was usually reserved for his friends and family.</p>

<p>"Zoya kind of very literally and metaphorically peels away all of those layers to kind of tap into a very real, very authentic side of me ... a little bit more quiet, more reserved, more introverted and more internally feeling sensitive, vulnerable," he said.</p>

<p>The movie - shot in Mumbai - features slum dwellers picking through rubbish, abandoned children preparing drugs to earn their keep and homes made from corrugated iron alongside wealthy Indians attending posh parties, modern skyscrapers and a group of camera-wielding British tourists visiting a slum.</p>

<p>It is one of around 400 films screening at this year's Berlinale festival, which runs until Feb. 17.</p>
