Magic tricks often evoke varied forms of reactions. There have been a lot of videos where people’s reaction to the sleight of hand tricks has triggered laughter.

But a priceless reaction of a monkey leaving bemused to a simple magic trick has gone viral in social media, and it has netizens in splits.

The video was posted on TikTok last week by Maximiliano Ibarra.

In the clip, Ibarra is seen holding a leaf in front of the monkey, which was sitting inside his glass enclosure, in Mexico’s Chapultepec Zoo.

Initially, the monkey, a Japanese macaque, seemed disinterested when Ibarra was performing the trick. But all that changed when he made the leaf ‘vanish’ with a sleight of hand trick.

The “witchcraft” seemed to have dazzled the monkey as it leapt forward with its jaw dropped and eye wide-open in disbelief.

Ibarra then made the leaf reappear and disappear and the monkey reacted by running up and down, putting its hand to its face and looking over its shoulder as if checking whether anyone else is seeing the tricks.

The primate’s reaction seemed to have impressed many as the TikTok clip has received more than 1.6 million likes, reports The Daily Mail.

Several users were in awe of the ape’s “humanlike” expression.

“I could binge watch animals reacting to magic tricks for months straight,” a user wrote. While another user said, “What witchcraft is this?”

“That's hilarious, yet amazing to watch the intelligence of monkeys,” one commenter wrote.

A French zoo was temporarily closed after a pack of nine wolves escaped during visiting hours.

The incident took place at the Trois Vallées zoo in Montredon-Labessonnié in the south-west Tarn region.

Four of the wolves were shot dead by park workers and five were anaesthetised by local officials on the scene. No humans were injured in the incident.

“Not many people were in the zoo at the time and at no time was the public in immediate danger,” Fabien Chollet, a local official, told AFP on Friday.

He added that the zoo needed to close until the issues were rectified.

On its website, Trois Vallées zoo said it would shut until mid-January due to “urgent works”.

The park’s owner, Sauveur Ferrara, said the wolves had recently arrived at the zoo, and stressed that they never left the zoo itself.

“Due to the abnormal and dangerous behaviour of some of them, four wolves were sadly killed by the park personnel,” he told AFP, while emphasising that the public were evacuated immediately from the park.

Spanning more than 60 hectares, the park holds more than 600 animals including lions, monkeys and flamingos.

This is not the first time that the park was ordered to close.

In October 2020, the zoo was closed down because of security measures, but the closure order was later lifted by a court.

Antwerp Zoo in Belgium on Friday announced that two hippopotamuses have tested positive for the deadly coronavirus. While the deadly virus was earlier seen as a major threat to humans, it is now affecting wildlife as well.

The zoo has been shut until further notice.

Antwerp Zoo vet Francis Vercammen while speaking to the Associated Press said, "To my knowledge, it’s the first recorded contamination among this species. Throughout the world this virus has mostly been seen in great apes and felines."

The deadly virus has infected a 14-year-old hippo Imani and a 41-year-old hippo Hermien. Both of them have not shown any major symptoms except for a runny nose. As per AP, the zoo employees who worked with the hippos have tested negative for the virus.

They have been strictly asked to wear a mask, and disinfect their shoes before handling the infected animals. This comes a day after Canada has detected coronavirus cases in three white-tailed deer. According to the National Centre for

Foreign Animal Disease, the samples were collected early in November in the Estrie region of Quebec. The samples were collected through a "big-game" registration station.

"COVID-19 remains largely a disease of human concern and typically spreads from human to human. Adhering to public health advice and getting fully vaccinated are key ways to protect against COVID-19," read the statement.

Meanwhile, earlier in November, cases of Alpha variant of Covid virus were detected in pets when two cats and dogs tested positive in a PCR test.

In addition to these animals, two other cats and a dog displayed antibodies 2-6 weeks after developing signs of cardiac disease.

After 13 gorillas were found to be infected with COVID-19 at Atlanta Zoo, another such case has come to the fore, where eight big cats were tested positive with the deadly virus in another US zoo.

In Saint Louis Zoo, two African lions, two snow leopards, two jaguars, Amur tiger and a Puma have tested positive for coronavirus, according to local media.

All the infected animals had mild symptoms, although some had a cough and nasal discharge as well, the zoo said. Most of the infected cats showed no signs of illness, but a few had a decreased appetite and were less active for short periods of time.

“As in humans, we would expect that full protection against this virus would not be developed until a few weeks after the second injection in a series,” news agency AP quoted Dr Sathya Chinnadurai, the zoo’s director of animal health, as saying.

The outbreak was limited to the big cats as one of the other 12,000 animals in the zoo have tested positive, the local newspaper reported.

Staff are yet to trace the source of the infection among the cats. Notably, all the zoo staff are fully vaccinated.

Zoo officials said that all of the cats received two doses of the coronavirus vaccine that is tailor-made for the animals. The two doses were administered during a roughly three-week period that began September 30, but the cats were likely exposed between doses.

Coronavirus cases have been surging across the globe. However, it is not just humans who are contracting the virus. In a first, two hyenas at the Denver zoo have tested positive for the deadly coronavirus.

As per the National Veterinary Services Laboratories, samples were collected from various animals after a few lions fell ill. When the results came, it was concluded that two hyenas, eleven lions and two tigers at the zoo tested positive.

Ngozi and Kibo are believed to be the first hyenas confirmed with COVID-19 worldwide. The staff told that both animals have extremely mild symptoms, including slight lethargy, some nasal discharge and occasional coughs.

"They have maintained normal energy levels, and interaction with enrichment and their keepers. Hyenas are famously tough, resilient animals that are known to be highly tolerant to anthrax, rabies and distemper. They're otherwise healthy and expected to make a full recovery," Denver zoo mentioned in a tweet.

Two tigers, Yuri and Nikita, have now recovered from the virus and are healthy. Also, the remaining eleven lions who tested positive "are either fully recovered or showing decreasing viral levels."

The zoo ensured that they are using the highest level of care and precaution when working with all of the 3,000 animals and 450 different species.

Meanwhile, a recent study has revealed that cases of Alpha variant of Sars-CoV-2 or Covid virus have been detected in pets. Two cats and a dog have tested positive in a PCR test.

Dr Luca Ferasin, lead author, UK-based Ralph Veterinary Referral Centre, while commenting on the research, said that the exercise has highlighted the growing risk of domestic animals getting infected with the virus.

“Our study reports the first cases of cats and dogs affected by the Alpha Covid variant. We also reported the atypical clinical manifestations characterised by severe heart abnormalities, which is a well-recognised complication in people affected by COVID-19, but has never been found in pets before,” Dr Ferasin added.

Now, COVID-19 spreads to gorillas at US zoo as 13 apes test positive

A baby gorilla has been born in the wild in Gabon from two parents who grew up in captivity in Europe, in a world-first that was hailed by conservationists of the endangered species on Tuesday.

The baby gorilla is thought to have been delivered on the night of June 13 in the Bateke Plateau National Park in the southeast of Gabon in central Africa.

The pair of western lowland gorillas were introduced to the Gabon park in 2019 and 2013 respectively and their mating represents a breakthrough in the complicated process of re-wilding.

"It's extraordinary news, a very significant world-first for the conservation of this species which is in serious danger of becoming extinct," Delphine Delord, assistant director of Beauval zoo, told AFP.

The Aspinall Foundation, which runs the Port Lympne Safari Park, reported the infant gorilla to be in good health.

It released photos and a video of Mayombe cradling her newborn, adding that it was "delighted to announce the first-ever birth to re-wilded, captive-born gorillas."

"This is a pivotal moment for wildlife conservation and a hugely emotional day for our entire team," chairman Damian Aspinall said in a statement sent to AFP.

Almost 80 per cent of Gabon is covered by forests, and primate habitation and protection programmes have been set up in its parks in recent years to boost tourism.

The number of western lowland gorillas has declined by 60 per cent in the past 20-25 years, according to the Aspinall Foundation, with poaching and habitat loss chiefly to blame.

'Cruel nature'

Delord from Beauval zoo warned that the weeks and months ahead would be critical for the baby.

"Nature is cruel, anything can happen," she said. "The baby is fragile but for the moment Mayombe is holding her newborn in the perfect position and is feeding well.

"Djongo is approaching them very gently. We even saw him touch the baby on the camera traps that turn on when an animal passes.

"Male gorillas have a role to play in the development of their offspring. We're looking at the creation of a new troop here which will be boosted by the reintroduction of another female who was born in England," she added.

The Aspinall Foundation says it has released eight black rhino, 135 primates, 11 European bison, and over 70 western lowland gorillas back to the wild.

Djongo was introduced to the Bateke Plateau National Park in 2013 along with his father, Djala, a wild-born orphan who was brought to Britain in 1986 after he was found tied to a post by a uranium prospector.

Gabon, which borders the Republic of Congo and Cameroon, stopped allowing tourists to see its great apes last year fearing that humans could give the novel coronavirus to the animals.

A baby gorilla has been born in the wild in Gabon from two parents who grew up in captivity in Europe, in a world-first that was hailed by conservationists of the endangered species on Tuesday.

Another captive lion has succumbed to COVID-19 in a Chennai zoo, according to a statement from the Arignar Anna Zoological Park, near Chennai.

This time it was a 12-year old male lion and it succumbed to the virus on Wednesday morning. Authorities say that the lion had been under intensive treatment since it tested positive for SARS-Cov-2 on June 03. The samples of this lion had tested positive, as per the report from National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD), Bhopal.

On June 4, the zoo had mentioned that nine of their eleven captive lions have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 infection — SARS-CoV-2 is the virus that causes the disease COVID-19.

Back then, Neela, a nine-year-old lioness that was housed in the zoo had died, a day after showing some nasal discharge. Authorities maintained that the lion was provided treatment immediately after it showcased symptoms.

On May 26, five lions housed in the Animal House 1 of the Safari Park area of the zoo were reported to show loss of appetite (anorexia) and occasional coughing. Following this, an in-house veterinary team along with those from Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS) took immediate action and offered treatment.

English Championship side Swansea City announced on Thursday they were boycotting social media for a week in protest against online abuse and discrimination, with Birmingham and Rangers taking similar steps.

Three Swansea players -- Yan Dhanda, Ben Cabango and Jamal Lowe -- have all been racially abused online recently.

Liverpool trio Trent Alexander-Arnold, Naby Keita and Sadio Mane became the latest in a long list of players to be targeted after Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final first-leg loss to Real Madrid.

Swansea have written to Facebook and Twitter calling for tougher punishments for those found guilty of posting "cowardly" abuse.

"From 5:00 pm (1600 GMT) today all first-team players, those in the academy professional phase, Swansea City Ladies, Community Trust, senior club staff and official club channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Snapchat, YouTube and TikTok) will not post any content for a period of seven days," the club said in a statement.

"As a close and diverse group of players, this is something we all feel extremely passionate about," said Swansea captain Matt Grimes.

"Three of our squad have been racially abused in recent weeks and, as a squad and club, we wanted to take this stance as we again call on those at the forefront of social media companies to implement the change that is needed now and in the future."

Fellow Championship side Birmingham and Scottish Premiership team Rangers later announced they were also launching week-long boycotts.

"The club stands in solidarity with Swansea City Football Club who first announced their intention to operate a social media blackout earlier today, with this fight going beyond sporting rivalries and one that must be tackled in unison," said a statement on Birmingham's website.

Rangers said they were concerned with the "daily racist abuse our players have to endure", adding there was concern that levels of hate were spiralling out of control.

Coronavirus might have fuelled an era of digital learning and communication among humans. Now, animals are not far behind. Chimpanzees at two Czech zoos are starting to enjoy video conferencing!

Even though humans may be tired of the digital lifestyle, the chimps are just starting to love it! Chimpanzees at the Safari Park Dvur Kralove and the troop situated in a zoo 150 kms away in Brno can now interact with each other and keep a track of each other’s daily activities on mega screens.

The zookeepers came up with the idea owing to the lack of interaction given the ongoing pandemic. The sound is always cut off from the screen. But ever since the video project kicked off last week, interest in the interaction has increased.

Gabriela Linhartova, an ape keeper at Dvur Kralove which lies 135 kilometres east of Prague was quoted by Reuters as saying that in the beginning, “[chimps] approached the screen with defensive or threatening gestures, there was interaction”.

“It has since moved into the mode of ‘I am in the movies’ or ‘I am watching TV’. When they see some tense situations, it gets them up off the couch, like us when we watch a live sport event”, Kralove added.

Just like humans, the chimpanzees enjoy snacking while watching their animals in action and have been spotted chewing on nuts with eyes fixed on the screen.

The video conferences are aired on the park’s website, and are expected to run daily from 8 am-4 pm till the end of March, after which zoo authorities will decide whether to continue.

Four lions at a Barcelona zoo have tested positive for coronavirus, veterinary authorities said on Tuesday.

This is only the second known case in which large felines have contracted the virus.

Two staff at the zoo also tested positive for coronavirus, the authorities said, after the outbreak was first detected last month.

Three females named Zala, Nima and Run Run and Kiumbe, a male, were tested after keepers noticed they showed slight symptoms of coronavirus.

Authorities are now investigating how the lions became infected. The four-year-old male and the females, who are all 16 years old, have had no contact with other animals at the zoo, which is open to visitors.

Keepers carried out PCR tests on the lions in the same way as humans are tested as the animals are acustomed to contact with the zoo staff.

The Veterinary Service of Barcelona contacted colleagues at the Bronx Zoo in New York, where four tigers and three lions tested positive for COVID-19 in April. It is the only other zoo where large felines are known to have contracted coronavirus. All recovered.

“The Zoo has contacted and collaborated with international experts such as the Veterinary Service of the Bronx Zoo, the only one that has documented cases of Sars-CoV-2 infection in felines,” the Barcelona zoo said in a statement.

“The lions were given veterinary care for their mild clinical condition - similar to a very mild flu condition - through anti-inflammatory treatment and close monitoring, and the animals responded well.”
