After travelling from Kyiv to the city of Zaporizhzhia, IAEA director general Rafael Grossi told reporters, "My mission is... to prevent a nuclear accident and preserve the largest nuclear power plant in Europe."&nbsp;

"We are preparing for the real work which begins tomorrow," he said. "We are going to try to establish a permanent presence for the agency."

The fate of the plant on the banks of the Dnipro River is causing widespread worry, and on Wednesday, further shelling hit the village next to Europe's largest nuclear reactor.&nbsp;

Evhen Yevtushenko, a military official in the area, claimed on Wednesday morning that "the Russian army is shelling Energodar," the town next to the facility with a pre-war population of 50,000.

Attacks in the area have been routinely blamed on both sides.

Mayor Dmytro Orlov posted images of the damaged building with a hole punched into its side on Telegram, writing that one of the rounds struck Energodar's municipal council.&nbsp;

Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Oleg Nikolenko said on Facebook that "the &nbsp;Russian occupying forces must stop shelling the corridors to be used by the IAEA mission and not obstruct its activities at the plant."

Auxiliary generators had to be activated and a power supply line used for the plant's own needs was also damaged due to the shelling.

After reports of fighting in the nearby town of Enerhodar, Russia's defence ministry said that the situation around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in Ukraine is "difficult but remains under full control."

Despite efforts by "the Kyiv regime" to disrupt the visit, the defence ministry said it was still ready to guarantee the safety of a delegation from the International Atomic Energy Agency at the plant.

Accusing Russia of trying to wreck the IAEA visit by shelling the plant, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for immediate de-militarisation of the plant.

With Moscow and Kyiv trading blame for shelling in the vicinity and fuelling fears of a radiation disaster, conditions at Europe's largest nuclear power plant have been unravelling for weeks.

Highlighting that the IAEA was pressing ahead with its plan to visit the facility and meet staff, its chief Rafael Grossi said the mission was aware of "increased military activity in the area".

As fierce combat raged throughout southern Ukraine on Tuesday, President Volodymyr Zelensky met with top UN nuclear inspectors in Kyiv ahead of their visit to evaluate the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, according to his office.&nbsp;

Rafael Grossi, the chairman of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and a 14-person team arrived in Kyiv late on Monday in preparation for a visit to the Zaporizhzhia plant, the largest nuclear facility in Europe that has been under Russian military control since early March.

"This is probably one of the top-priority questions regarding the safety of Ukraine and the world today," Zelensky said, calling for the "immediate de-militarisation of the plant" and its transfer to "full Ukrainian control".

According to Ukraine's nuclear agency Energoatom, the plant came under further shelling over the weekend, with Moscow and Kyiv trading accusations for the strikes near the complex of six nuclear reactors that is situated on the banks of the Dnipro River.

In the meantime, a fierce battle raged throughout the nearby Kherson region of the south as Ukrainian forces launched a significant counteroffensive "in various directions."&nbsp;

At the beginning of the invasion six months ago, Moscow's forces grabbed the majority of the Black Sea-bordering Kherson area, including its provincial capital of the same name.

Since the fighting has virtually ceased in the eastern Donbas region, commentators have predicted for weeks that fighting will move south to end the standoff before winter.&nbsp;

Tuesday also saw further Russian attacks on Kharkiv's centre, which resulted in at least five fatalities and seven injuries. However, the southern counteroffensive continued to receive most of the focus.&nbsp;

According to a report made on Tuesday by the Russian defence ministry, Ukraine's southern counterattack resulted in "large-scale losses" of more than 1,200 soldiers and 150 military vehicles.

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and its surrounding areas in Ukraine became the latest conflict zone in the ongoing Russian invasion of the country. According to local officials, the Russian forces fired at a number of towns close the power plant prompting fears of a potential radiation disaster.

The nuclear plant has been dominating headlines this week with both Russia and Ukraine accusing each other of targeting it. On Saturday, Russian defence ministry also accused Ukraine of shelling.

The Zaporizhzhia plant is currently in a complex situation as although it is operated by a Ukrainian crew, the control remains with Russian military who took over the facility in March. As a result, in the past few weeks, both sides have been accusing each other of shelling in the region.

However, Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba denied any change in stance from Russia.

According to RIA news agency, the Ukrainian forces attacked a helicopter repairing plant in the region on Sunday. The report further claimed that Ukraine was using drones to carry out attacks in the area and the Russians were able to destroy one such drone near the nuclear facility.

On the other hand, governor Oleksandr Starukh took to Telegram to announce that Russian forces were shelling Zaporizhzhia and they ended up causing massive damages to the buildings.

Tensions rise in Ukraine as conflict continues near Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant

Amid continued uncertainty over Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant's safety, Ukraine said the infrastructure around the station has been damaged due to periodic shelling leading to higher risk of hydrogen leakage and sputtering of radioactive substances.

Meanwhile, the plant was disconnected from Ukraine's national supply system after a power line was twice disconnected by fires at ash pits in an adjacent thermal power plant, Energoatom said.&nbsp;

The three other power lines "were earlier damaged during terrorist attacks" by Russian forces, the operator said and as a result, the two of the plant's six reactors still functioning "were disconnected from the network". &nbsp;

Energoatom said, "start-up operations are underway to connect one of the reactors to the network".&nbsp;

As per Kyiv officials, Moscow seized the station in order to divert power to the Crimean peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014.&nbsp;

Putin and Macron called for independent inspections of the Moscow-occupied nuclear plant. Kremlin's statement added that both leaders called for experts of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to inspect the plant "as soon as possible" and "assess the real situation on the ground". &nbsp;

The statement added, "The Russian side confirmed its readiness to provide the Agency inspectors with the necessary assistance."&nbsp;

During his crucial visit to the port of Odessa in southern Ukraine, the UN Secretary-General said, "Obviously, the electricity from Zaporizhzhia is Ukrainian electricity... This principle must be fully respected."

His statement comes after Ukraine reported that Russia was planning to switch off the functioning power blocks at the Zaporizhzhia plant. Ukraine's state nuclear company Energoatom&nbsp;said on Friday that Russian forces are planning to disconnect them from the Ukrainian power grid.

The energy operator said: "There is information that Russian occupying troops are planning to shut off the reactors and switch them from the output lines of the Ukrainian energy system."

UN chief Antonio Guterres says Russia-occupied nuclear plant not be cut off from Ukraine's grid

Fears of a nuclear disaster in Ukraine are growing every day as the country and its aggressor Russia, continue to engage in strikes around Europe's largest nuclear power plant, Zaporizhzhia.&nbsp;

For the last two weeks, the power plant has been at grave risk as shelling around it continues.&nbsp;This has raised concern among the international community, United Nations nuclear watchdog IAEA has even warned of impending nuclear disaster and has&nbsp;called for a demilitarised zone.

NATO too has called for an urgent need to inspect the power plant.

For&nbsp;insights into&nbsp;the looming tragedy, WION spoke to senior journalist Mac William Bishop, who is currently situated near&nbsp;Mykolaiv, Ukraine. When asked about the present scenario around the Zaporizhzhia power plant, Bishop noted that the situation "isn't clear"&nbsp;at this time.

As per him "Russian military forces are in control of the nuclear power plant however the Ukrainian workers that operate the plant still continue to go to work, maintain the plant and ensure its safe operation."

Bishop says that the situation isn’t that bad at the moment, but that there is a concern that "it could become quite bad, quite quickly"

Talking about the 1986 Chornobyl disaster, he said that Ukraine has been the scene of one of the worst nuclear accidents in human history, the fallout of which affected the whole of Europe and the site of which is still the scene of an exclusion zone "where people still can't live and possibly won't be able to for hundreds of years".

"There is a major concern obviously, when you talk about mixing nuclear reactors and high explosives, military grade weapons...the possibility that there could be a catastrophic failure is real and I think that is why so many actors in the international community are now concerned about what is happening in this location."&nbsp;

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that the impending disaster would affect the whole of Europe and has requested international agencies to intervene.&nbsp;

In Bishop's view "It has also been the strategy of the Ukrainian government to try to get more international actors involved in this conflict and so of course that is also part of the reason why they are reaching out to the IAEA and UN for assistance in dealing with this issue"

Following the plant's strike in March, nuclear catastrophe was narrowly avoided. Fortunately, there was no radiation leak and there was no damage to the reactors. The plant has remained at the front lines of the Russia-Ukraine conflict ever since and the two nations continue to blame one another for the strike.

Talking about the ongoing blame game between Russia and Ukraine and his thoughts on who actually shelled the plant Bishop remarked "If Russian troops are occupying this nuclear power plant it would make little sense for the Ukrainians to shell the facility in order to try and liberate it. Meanwhile, why the Russians would shell a facility that they are controlling also makes little sense from a strategic and tactical standpoint."

He pointed out that "there is a very intensive propaganda, information war being conducted by both Ukraine and Russia, on social media platforms, through traditional news outlets," and that "each side is working to shape the narrative to their advantage"

"We simply don't have enough details about what exactly is happened or the nature of these shelling, the origin of it to make any kind of clear assessment at this point," he added.

As per reports, on Thursday (August 18), United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan in Kyiv.

The question is: Will the upcoming visits by the heads of the UN and a possible visit by the IAEA chief have any impact or potentially calm things down?

"I think that is certainly the hope of any responsible party that's looking at events around this nuclear power plant. Unfortunately, international organisations like the UN, they've not proven to be particularly affective in this conflict. For the last two weeks, the power plant has been at grave risk as shelling around it continues. This has raised concern among the international community, United Nations nuclear watchdog IAEA has even warned of impending nuclear disaster and has called for a demilitarised zone. NATO too has called for an urgent need to inspect the power plant. For insights into the looming tragedy, WION spoke to senior journalist Mac William Bishop, who is currently situated near Mykolaiv, Ukraine. When asked about the present scenario around the Zaporizhzhia power plant, Bishop noted that the situation "isn't clear" at this time. In Bishop's view "It has also been the strategy of the Ukrainian government to try to get more international actors involved in this conflict and so of course that is also part of the reason why they are reaching out to the IAEA and UN for assistance in dealing with this issue" Following the plant's strike in March, nuclear catastrophe was narrowly avoided. Fortunately, there was no radiation leak and there was no damage to the reactors. The plant has remained at the front lines of the Russia-Ukraine conflict ever since and the two nations continue to blame one another for the strike. He pointed out that "there is a very intensive propaganda, information war being conducted by both Ukraine and Russia, on social media platforms, through traditional news outlets," and that "each side is working to shape the narrative to their advantage" "We simply don't have enough details about what exactly is happened or the nature of these shelling, the origin of it to make any kind of clear assessment at this point," he added. As per reports, on Thursday (August 18), United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan in Kyiv. "I think that is certainly the hope of any responsible party that's looking at events around this nuclear power plant. In order to safeguard the security of the IAEA mission, Nebenzya informed the Council, "We call on states that support the Kyiv regime to bring their proxies into check to compel them to immediately and once and for all stop attacks on Zaporizhzhia nuclear power."

Nebenzya added, "This is the only option to prevent a major radioactive catastrophe on the European continent, the risk of which is now more real than ever."

Washington also said&nbsp;that it concurs with requests from the UN and others for the creation of a demilitarised zone surrounding the plant.

The only way to guarantee nuclear safety, Bonnie Jenkins, the undersecretary of state for arms control and international security, warned the Council, would be for Moscow to put an end to its war. "This visit cannot wait any longer," she said.

Urging residents to shelter when they hear air raid sirens, Reznichenko wrote, "It was a terrible night. I am asking and begging you... Don't let the Russians kill you."

Most of the casualties were in the town of Marganets, just across the Dnieper River from the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

Regional council head Mykola Lukashuk informed that the strikes also damaged a local power line, leaving thousands of people without electricity.

Meanwhile, the Group of Seven industrialised nations (G7) has condemned Russia's occupation of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant and wants Moscow to immediately hand back full control of the plant to Ukraine.

Ukrainian staff operating the plant "must be able to carry out their duties without threats or pressure. It is Russia's continued control of the plant that endangers the region," the G7 foreign ministers said in a statement.

Moscow insists that the explosions were caused by detonating ammunition and not Ukrainian fire. However, Ukraine has now said that nine Russian warplanes were destroyed in the blasts.

Energoatom, Ukraine's state-run operator of the country's nuclear power plants, said in a statement, "Three strikes were recorded on the site of the plant, near one of the power blocks where the nuclear reactor is located."

It added that "There are risks of hydrogen leakage and radioactive spraying. The fire danger is high."

According to the Russian defence ministry, "Ukrainian armed units carried out three artillery strikes on the territory of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and the city of Energodar."

Energoatom, Ukraine's state-run operator of the country's nuclear power plants, said in a statement, "Three strikes were recorded on the site of the plant, near one of the power blocks where the nuclear reactor is located." It added that "There are risks of hydrogen leakage and radioactive spraying. The fire danger is high." × According to the Russian defence ministry, "Ukrainian armed units carried out three artillery strikes on the territory of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and the city of Energodar." "We are urging international organisations to condemn the criminal actions of the Zelensky regime, which is carrying out acts of nuclear terrorism." ''Moscow is using the plant as a military base to fire at Ukrainians, knowing that they can't and won't shoot back because they might accidentally strike a nuclear... reactor or highly radioactive waste in storage," according to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) head Rafael Grossi told Swiss paper Tages-Anzeiger that contact with the plant was "fragile" and communications did not function every day. Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Moscow's troops took control of the power plant in March and residents living near it fear another Chornobyl disaster if the fighting gets too close.
