<p>Elon Musk’s X, formerly known as Twitter, sued a non-profit research group, on Monday (July 31) which investigates hate speech on the social media platforms alleging that they pushed false claims and encouraged advertisers to pause investment on the platform.</p>

<p>The lawsuit was filed in a United States district court in Northern California where X alleged that the American and British operations of the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) “engaged in a series of unlawful acts” and “improperly” accessed “protected X Corp. data.”</p>

<p>This comes a day after American media reported that the Elon Musk-owned social media platform sent a letter to the organisation and threatened to sue the non-profit for unspecified damages.</p>

<p>The social media giant also accused CCDH of researchers violating its terms of service as well as breach of contract, violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, and intentional interference with contractual relations, in a “scare campaign to drive away advertisers,” with “incendiary claims”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The microblogging platform also asks that CCDH be barred from accessing materials licensed to a tool that, according to Musk’s lawyers, was allegedly used by the group to obtain the data used for the report.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Musk, who is a self-described free-speech absolutist, as per reports has welcomed back white supremacists and election deniers to the platform after his takeover and reinstated previously banned accounts.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The lawsuit stems from a report by Bloomberg published in July which cited findings from CCDH’s research and said that hate speech had increased towards minority communities on X.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>The organisation, which also studies hate speech, extremism and harmful behaviour on social media platforms including X, TikTok and Facebook, has published several reports critical of Musk’s leadership after the takeover.&nbsp;It has also documented an increase in anti-LGBTQ hate speech as well as climate misinformation.&nbsp;<br />

However, as per American media reports, X’s attorney cited a report from June that showed that the microblogging platform failed to remove neo-Nazi and anti-LGBTQ content from verified users that violated its rules.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The CCDH report in June said Twitter had failed to take action against 99 of the 100 paid accounts the organisation had flagged with user-reporting tools for hateful conduct, among which was an anti-Semitic post and a transphobic post.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a recent statement, X and its CEO Linda Yaccarino labelled the report false and inaccurate, adding that it was based on “a collection of incorrect, misleading, and outdated metrics, mostly from the period shortly after Twitter’s acquisition.”</p>

<h2><strong>Musk declares an ‘open war’</strong></h2>

<p>In response to X’s letter threatening to sue the research organisation, CCHD hit back and accused the social media platform of “intimidating those who have the courage to advocate against incitement, hate speech and harmful content online,” adding that their allegations have no factual basis.</p>

<p>In an interview with <em>The Associated Press</em>, CCHD founder and CEO Imran Ahmed called the lawsuit an “unprecedented escalation by a social media company against independent researchers.” He added, “Musk has just declared open war”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The giant and illuminating ‘X’ sign atop the San Francisco headquarters of the company formerly known as Twitter was dismantled on Monday (July 31) morning, just days after it was installed, following complaints about its safety and lack of permit.</p>

<p>Over the weekend, the San Francisco Department of Building Inspection received 24 complaints about the sign including "concerns about its structural safety and illumination”.</p>

<p>"I thought it was lightning, and I was very confused. I went to my window, I looked around, I didn't see anything. I thought it was maybe a police siren," resident Patricia Wallinga, who lives across the street, told CBS News.</p>

<p>After the rebranding announcement on July 23, the ‘X’ logo was hurriedly erected atop the building and was partly supported by sandbags.</p>

<p>Later, the city opened a complaint and launched a probe on the day the sign went up after it deemed X “unsafe” because it was built without a safety permit.</p>

<p>“Any replacement letters or symbols would require a permit to ensure consistency with the historic nature of the building and to make sure additions are safely attached to the sign," a spokesperson for the Department of Building Inspection&nbsp;told The Associated Press.</p>

<p>Department of Building Inspection spokesperson Patrick Hannan said that a city inspector tried to get to the building's roof when the complaints started pouring in but he was denied access twice.</p>

<p>In an interview with The Verge, Hannan said that no permit is needed to take down the logo but, "due to safety concerns, the permit can be secured after the structure is taken down."</p>

<p>He said that the building’s owner would be fined for “building permits for the installation and removal of the structure” and to cover the department’s inspection and investigation costs.</p>

However, the Facebook CEO during a recent town hall told employees that he was not sure if the fight was going to happen, reported Reuters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>An ex-employee at Twitter (Now X) has shed light on how US billionaire Elon Musk has handled the operations at the popular microblogging site since taking over in October last year.</p>

<p>In the shocking revelations, Esther Crawford, a product manager at Twitter who was fired following Musk’s takeover, claimed the ‘X’ owner to be driven by instinct, not data. She also claimed that Musk was always surrounded by sycophants and ‘yes men’, who always seemed to agree to whatever Musk suggested.</p>

<p>In a lengthy post on X, Crawford wrote, “I disagree with many of his decisions and am surprised by his willingness to burn so much down, but with enough money and time, something new and innovative may emerge."</p>

<p>"At times it felt like the inner circle was too zealous and fanatical in their unwavering support of everything he said," Crawford added.</p>

<h2><strong>Elon Musk, a toxic boss?</strong></h2>

<p>In her X post, Crawford mentioned that the employees at the company would always fear being called into meetings with Musk, especially when they were supposed to deliver some negative news.</p>

<p>However, there is one interesting aspect of the Twitter makeover. Elon Musk’s obsession with the letter ‘X’. Turns out there is a historical context to it.</p>

<p>Before buying Twitter in 2022, Musk had said, “Buying Twitter is an accelerant to creating X, the everything app”.</p>

<p>In April this year, a filing in a federal court case in California revealed Twitter had been renamed to X Corp. In the same month, Musk tweeted only the letter ‘X’ to his millions of followers.</p>

<h2><strong>Musk’s first venture</strong></h2>

<p>In 1999, Musk came out with his first venture known as X.com—an online banking and financial services platform. A year later, he was forced to step down as the CEO of the firm.</p>

<p>“Everyone tried to talk him out of naming the company that back then because of the sexual innuendos, but he really liked it and stuck with it,” said Ashlee Vance, the author of Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future, about the X.com domain, according to NPR.</p>

<p>Three years later, Musk earned $165 million when the site, which was merged with PayPal by then, was bought by eBay.</p>

<p>Author Walter Isaacson also shared his thoughts on the whole matter by quoting excerpts from his upcoming biography on Musk.</p>

<p>&nbsp;“His concept for X.com was grand. It would be a one-stop everything-store for all financial needs: banking, digital purchases, checking, credit cards, investments, and loans. Transactions would be handled instantly, with no waiting for payments to clear. His insight was that money is simply an entry into a database, and he wanted to devise a way that all transactions were securely recorded in real-time.”</p>

<p>Musk would later buy the domain X.com back from PayPal in 2017. That site now directs people to Twitter.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Thanks PayPal for allowing me to buy back X.com! No plans right now, but it has great sentimental value to me,” Musk wrote on Twitter in 2017,&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, that was the first time Musk used the letter X as the domain name, but it was not his last.</p>

<h2><strong>‘X’ doesn’t stop there</strong></h2>

<p>Musk also affixed the letter “X” to his space company’s brand name.</p>

<p>SpaceX, formally known as Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, was founded by Musk in 2002.</p>

<p>The company recently launched its $3 billion&nbsp;test flight which was deemed a great success&nbsp;even after it burst into a spectacular ball of flames.</p>

<p>And even in Musk’s “bestselling” Tesla car, the letter X can be witnessed.</p>

<p>Model X, launched in 2015, was the “first SUV ever to earn 5-star safety ratings in every category and sub-category in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s tests,” as per the website.</p>

<p>And it doesn’t end here. The letter X also features in the name of Elon Musk’s son — X AE A-XII. The billionaire recently celebrated his 4th birthday.</p>

<p>Earlier this month, Musk launched his artificial intelligence startup named xAI. According to the company’s website, its goal is to “understand the true nature of the universe”.</p>

<h2><strong>But why X?</strong></h2>

<p>Musk earlier said that he chose “X” to replace Twitter’s brand because he wanted something that “embodies the imperfections in us all that make us unique”.</p>

<p>Canadian artist Claire Boucher, who shares two children with now separated Musk, recently explained why her baby is named ‘X’. She says it connotes the “unknown variable” in algebra.</p>

<p>According to writer Leon F Seltzer, the word ‘X’ has become the most “nihilistic” of letters.</p>

<p>In his piece for Psychology Today, Seltzer suggested that Musk appreciates X’s malleability—how it can be birth and death, cancellation and multiplication, nothing and everything.</p>

This has begun speculation about Twitter owner Elon Musk's plans about the social media platform which he has said in past would ideally be converted into a 'everything app' X.</p>

<p>WeChat, GoJek, and Grab are some that leveraged the opportunity of customer traffic on their platforms that originally came for social media and communication by offering additional services leading to increased revenue realisations.</p>

<p>In India, the Tata Group is planning to come up with its own super app.</p>

<p>Reliance Industries, under its Jio umbrella, is amalgamating its various services such as shopping, content streaming, groceries, payments, cloud services, etc.</p>

<p>Whereas, Paytm, which initially started out as a digital payments company, has been offering other services like ticket bookings, games, online shopping, banking, consumer finance, etc.</p>

<p>India’s homegrown Flipkart Group has tied up its payments app PhonePe with companies such as Ola Cabs, Swiggy, Grofers, AJio, Decathlon, Delhi Metro, booking.com, etc., to offer these services from within its own app.</p>

<h2>Have other US tech firms tried this?</h2>

<p>Snap Inc-owned Snapchat earlier introduced peer-to-peer payments called Snapcash, but ended the feature in 2018.</p>

<p>It also made a push into mobile gaming and recently ended that venture as part of cost-cutting plans.<br />
