Researchers trying to unravel the mysteries of the dark period claim they have found Bacillus anthracis at a Japanese World War II-era laboratory in northeastern China.

The bacteria, known to cause anthrax, was discovered at Unit 731, a place where scientists are said to have intentionally infected prisoners with pathogens to develop biological weapons, as per historical accounts. Another study at the site had earlier detected B. anthracis in three soil samples, Gizmodo reported.

Researchers from the Academy of Military Medical Sciences in Beijing analysed the site and presented their findings about the said atrocities carried out at Unit 731 in a research letter published in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases on November 20.

Its physical, biochemical, and genetic properties were then analysed, after which the researchers sequenced the genome of the isolated strain and identified the key genes.&nbsp;

“By analysing the distribution of the positive samples, qualities of the isolated strain, and historical documents, we established a chain of evidence supporting the hypothesis that B. anthracis was misused in inhumane medical experiments and likely for developing biological weapons during WWII,” the researchers wrote.

Samples were also taken from 12 other locations near the lab, but none of them had any traces of B. anthracis. This led the scientists to conclude that the bacteria in the positive samples did not naturally occur in the local environment.&nbsp;

They have warned that not only humans but animals and nature are at risk of being infected by similar remains at other World War II sites, if not dealt with properly.&nbsp;

Biowarfare in WWII? Chinese scientists say Japan injected prisoners with pathogens

A World War II era bomb that lay buried unexploded beneath a Japanese airport blew up Wednesday (Oct 2), damaging the taxiway and causing flight cancellations. Land and Transport Ministry officials said the incident at Miyazaki Airport in southwestern Japan caused no injuries but led to the cancellation of 87 flights.

The airport was used as a base of Japanese ‘Kamikaze’ pilots during the World War 2. 
 
The explosion created a crater seven metres (23 feet) wide and one metre (3.2 feet) deep in the middle of the taxiway. Officials said the explosion was caused by a World War II US bomb that remained buried all these years.

CCTV footage showed an aeroplane was just 100 metres away from the explosion site. A bomb disposal team from the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force was rushed to the scene following the explosion. As per media reports, the airport will resume operations Thursday morning, once the crater is filled and necessary repairs to the taxiway are carried out.

Miyazaki Airport served as a base for Japanese kamikaze jets from 1943 till the war ended.

That explains why it became a prime military target for US bombers during the WW2 era. So far, several unexploded US bombs have been recovered from the site.

A World War II era bomb that lay buried unexploded beneath a Japanese airport blew up Wednesday (Oct 2), damaging the taxiway and causing flight cancellations. Land and Transport Ministry officials said the incident at Miyazaki Airport in southwestern Japan caused no injuries but led to the cancellation of 87 flights.

As per media reports, the airport will resume operations Thursday morning, once the crater is filled and necessary repairs to the taxiway are carried out.
