Violent crimes against women in Egypt are rising, drawing attention to gaps in legal protection system that leaves the vulnerable to attacks and assaults, here's our report.

Egypt: Gaps in legal, social protection systems make women susceptible to violence

Egypt, a country where only 14.3 per cent of women are formally employed, has now marked another milestone with the Cairo Metro recruiting the country’s first female train drivers to expand its services to a population of nearly 20 million people. To safeguard women from sexual harassment, the Cairo Metro offers reserved carriages for those who do not want to travel with men.

Cairo Metro, launched in 1987, being the oldest in the Arab world, falls behind the other Arab countries in providing job opportunities for women.

According to its two pioneers, women have already taken control of the drivers' cab since April, offending many, from raising eyebrows to making faces of disgust. Egyptian women have had the right to vote and stand for office since 1956, but patriarchal laws and a predominately male culture have severely restricted personal freedoms.

Hind Omar, a business graduate, and mother of two, rushed to apply to be a train driver. She said, "I have several thousand lives in my hands every day." The 30-year-old woman, proudly wearing her neon jacket and her black and white hijab, said that her family has always been supportive.

Omar further claimed that the tests for women aspiring to be train drivers had been difficult and required the applicants to exhibit their ‘attention span’ and ‘endurance.’ She further claimed that women need to be watchful for long hours during the six-day working week.

Another woman qualified to be train driver, Suzanne Mohammed, 32, recounted reaction on initially seen sitting on the driver’s seat by the passengers on the platform.

Since its independence in 1947, India has shown the way in giving top leadership roles to women. In fact, India is one of the very few countries where women were both head of government and head of state.

In an attempt to understand the ‘worry gap’ between the sexes ever since the Covid pandemic, a study has found that women are twice as likely to be worried when compared to men.

According to the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen), UK’s independent social research institute, women are now worrying more about work-life balance, parents, and having children, while a minuscule 9 per cent of men said that they worry about the same.

The research, published in January, found out that the ‘worry gap’ between males and females wasn’t as stark before the pandemic, reports Sky News.

The largest divide in levels of worry was seen in the health and wellbeing matrix, whereby three times more women than men expressed serious concern about their lives.

The same level of difference was observed in other spheres, whereby 43 per cent of women said they were experiencing "intergenerational worries" about their children and parents compared to 1 per cent of the men.

While 31 per cent of women said they were extremely worried about their work-life balance, compared with 20 per cent of men.

“While overall levels of worry appear to be the same in 2022 as they were pre-pandemic, this conceals a stark 'worry gap' that has opened up between women and men," the study's co-author Josefien Breedvelt was quoted as saying.

"Women may still be experiencing a greater impact from the ongoing legacy and stress that the pandemic brought about.

"If ongoing challenges from the pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis fall disproportionately on women, we may see an even greater divergence in levels of worry between men and women in Britain."

The study is part of NatCen's annual Society Watch report which seeks to examine the kind of impact COVID-19 pandemic had on social lives by extrapolating a representative sample of their worry levels. It then compared the answers to those collected in 2018 and 2019 to arrive at their conclusion.

Women worry twice as much as men about life, children, parents post Covid pandemic: Study

Pope Francis disclosed that for the first time he would name women to a previously all-male Vatican committee that helps him select the world's bishops and said he wants to give women more top-level positions in the Holy See. The role of women in the Vatican hierarchy was one of the many Church and international topics the 85-year-old pontiff discussed in an exclusive interview with Reuters in his Vatican residence on July 2. A new constitution for the Holy See's central administration that came into effect last month allows any baptised Catholic, including lay men and women, to head most Vatican departments.

As reported by Reuters, Pope said in the 90-minute interview that discussed the new constitution for the central administration, known as the Curia, "I am open to giving (women) an opportunity." He mentioned that last year, for the first time, he named a woman to the number two position in the governorship of Vatican City, making Sister Raffaella Petrini the highest-ranking woman in the world's smallest state.

"Two women will be appointed for the first time in the committee to elect bishops in the Congregation for Bishops," he said, as reported by Reuters. The move, which has not been officially announced, is highly significant because women will for the first time have a say in the appointment of the world's bishops, who are all men.

Francis did not name the women or say when their appointment would be announced officially. Members of the committee, which is now made up of cardinals, bishops and priests, usually meet twice a month in Rome. Asked which other Vatican department conceivably be headed by a layman or woman, Francis suggested that they could include the department for Catholic Education and Culture and the Apostolic Library. They are currently headed by male clerics. Francis has already named a number of women, both nuns and laywomen, to Vatican departments.

A study has revealed that women are "significantly" more likely than men to suffer from long Covid. It has also been found that they would experience different symptoms. The study has underscored critical need for sex-disaggregated research.

Long Covid involves the persistence of complications for more than four weeks after initial infection.

Researchers from the Johnson & Johnson Office of the Chief Medical Officer Health of Women Team, who carried out the analysis of data from around 1.3 million patients, observed females with long Covid are presenting with a variety of symptoms including ear, nose, and throat issues; mood disorders, neurological, skin, gastrointestinal and rheumatological disorders; as well as fatigue.

Male patients, however, were more likely to experience endocrine disorders such as diabetes and kidney disorders.

The study found that there 22 per cent more chance of women developing long Covid than men. The research has been published in the journal Current Medical Research and Opinion.

"Knowledge about fundamental sex differences underpinning the clinical manifestations, disease progression, and health outcomes of Covid-19 is crucial for the identification and rational design of effective therapies and public health interventions that are inclusive of and sensitive to the potential differential treatment needs of both sexes," the researchers explained.

"Differences in immune system function between females and males could be an important driver of sex differences in long Covid syndrome. Females mount more rapid and robust innate and adaptive immune responses, which can protect them from initial infection and severity. However, this same difference can render females more vulnerable to prolonged autoimmune-related diseases," they added.

For the study, the team reviewed 640,634 total articles amounting to 1,393,355 unique individuals.

A mobile phone app has come to the rescue of women in Palestinian Gaza Strip. It will allow women to report domestic abuse anonymously, media reports said. The "Masahatuna" or "Our Spaces" app is a brainchild of local computer engineer Alaa Huthut. It seems to have become a boon for growing numbers of victims, who want to seek help but want to avoid shame and reprisals. Many women are scared to report these offences to the authorities directly.

In a society where domestic violence is generally kept hidden due to family pressures, Huthut saw the need for a way to seek advice safely. "Privacy was very important as fear is usually the main cause women don't contact or visit centres," Huthut told Reuters.

As the child-rearing costs surge, South Korean women are looking to freeze eggs for future, media reports said. This procedure also gives them an ample amount of time to prepare for starting a family without worrying about their biological clock. The freezing of eggs seems to have become one of the best ways to buy reproductive time. It is nowadays being explored by women around the whole world.

Around 1,200 unmarried single women had gone for egg freezing last year at CHA Medical Center, which is the largest fertility clinic chain in South Korea. The number of women going for this procedure has doubled over two years.

This comes as the fertility rate, which is the average number of children born to a woman in reproductive life, was only 0.81 in South Korea last year.

The rising costs of living, such as housing and education, seems to be a big reason behind the move in South Korea.

Public servant Lim Eun-young, who had some of her eggs frozen in November, told Reuters, "It's a big relief and it gives me peace of mind to know that I have healthy eggs frozen right here."

But, what is egg freezing?

Egg freezing is the process of freezing unfertilised eggs of women for future use. It is also called oocyte cryopreservation. It is a type of fertility preservation.

Taliban in Afghanistan has come up with a new draconian decree for women. It has made it mandatory for female news anchors to cover their faces.

Taliban's new draconian decree for women: Face cover must for female news anchors

In a sign that the Taliban regime was increasingly moving towards re-establishing a strict religious regime, women in Afghanistan were ordered to cover their faces in public with traditional burqa.

The decree came from Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada. The decree saif that if women had no important work outside then it was "better they stay at home". The decree also outlined punishments for women's male guardians if they didn't comply with the dress code.

It was the latest in a slew of Taliban restrictions on women, including banning them from any government jobs, secondary education and travelling alone outside their cities, and prompted widespread international condemnation.

"So much pain & grief for women of my country, my heart is exploding. So much hatred & anger against Taliban, enemies of women, enforcers of gender apartheid, enemies of Afghanistan & humanity. The world is a bystander to our pain, to an apartheid, to complete tyranny," tweeted Shaharzad Akbar, the former chairperson of Afghanistan's Human Rights Commission.

"Those women who are not too old or young must cover their face, except the eyes, as per sharia directives, in order to avoid provocation when meeting men who are not mahram (adult close male relatives)," said the decree approved by Akhundzada and released by Taliban authorities at a ceremony in Kabul.

The Taliban decree said that the best way for a woman to cover her face was to wear Chadri. It is a traditional, blue Afghan burqa that includes screen over the face.

"They should wear a chadari as it is traditional and respectful," it said.

The Ministry for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, which released the new order, announced a slew of punishments if the dress code is not followed.

It said a woman's father or male guardian would be summoned and could even be imprisoned if the offence was committed repeatedly.

Women working in government institutions who did not follow the order "should be fired", the ministry added.

Government employees whose wives and daughters do not comply will also be suspended from their jobs, the decree said.
