A team of researchers from the University of East Anglia (UEA) and the University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom have found that hormone replacement therapy (HRT), used to relieve symptoms of menopause in women, may help prevent Alzheimer’s disease. The study published in the Alzheimer’s Research & Therapy journal, earlier this week, shows evidence of HRT reducing the risk of the aforementioned disease in women carrying the APOE4 gene. While APOE4 is the strongest risk factor gene for the disease, inheriting it does not necessarily mean that a person will definitely develop the condition.

The recent study found that HRT was most effective when taken before periods stop and the onset of symptoms which then build up for months or years, also known as perimenopause. However, researchers have also said that they cannot say with absolute certainty that HRT will reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease in women, but the findings were important given the limited treatment and prevention options for dementia.

“In addition to living longer, the reason behind the higher female prevalence is thought to be related to the effects of menopause and the impact of the APOE4 genetic risk factor being greater in women,” said professor Anne-Marie Minihane from UEA’s Norwich Medical School who co-led the study with the University of Edinburgh, professor Craig Ritchie. She added, “We wanted to find out whether HRT could prevent cognitive decline in at-risk APOE4 carriers”.

The findings were based on the data analysed from 1,178 women who are a part of the European Prevention of Alzheimer’s Dementia initiative, which was set up to study the participants’ brain health over time. The initiative has reportedly tracked over 1,900 people across 10 countries who were aged over 50 and did not have dementia at the beginning of the study.

Notably, while the study does not look at dementia cases, Minihane said that cognitive performance and lower brain volumes are predictive of future dementia risk. The team of researchers from the UK looked at MRI scans which recorded the results of the cognitive tests and brain volumes and found that APOE4 carriers who used HRT had better cognition and higher brain volumes. This data was then compared to those who did not take the HRT and also were non-APOE4 carriers.

“An effect on both cognition and brain changes on MRI supports the notion that HRT has tangible benefit. These initial findings need replication, however, in other populations,” said Ritchie. Additionally, he also highlighted the need to challenge many assumptions about Alzheimer’s disease and its treatment, particularly in women.

The United Nations urged the Taliban on Tuesday to remove the tough policies that impact the education of women and girls in Afghanistan. The UN rights chief spoke about the “terrible consequences” of the oppressive measures and asked the Taliban to reconsider them.

"No country can develop -- indeed survive -- socially and economically with half its population excluded," Volker Turk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, said.

"These unfathomable restrictions placed on women and girls will not only increase the suffering of all Afghans but, I fear, pose a risk beyond Afghanistan's borders," he added according to AFP.

The Taliban announced that women could not work in non-governmental organisations anymore – just days after banning university education for women and secondary schooling for girls.

"I urge the de facto authorities to ensure the respect and protection of the rights of all women and girls -- to be seen, to be heard and to participate in and contribute to all aspects of the social, political and economic life of the country," said Turk when asked about the UN’s stance.

Afghanistan has witnessed the closure of more than five NGOs since women were banned from working and Turk believes that it can cause a major crisis when it comes to the caregiving sector. It has also resulted in multiple foreign aid groups pulling out of the country in the past week.

"Women and girls cannot be denied their inherent rights," said Turk.

"Attempts by the de facto authorities to relegate them to silence and invisibility will not succeed."

The Taliban regime in Afghanistan is increasingly drawing global criticism after their recent stance of not allowing women to attend universities. In response to this, Nida Mohammad Nadim, the Taliban's minister of higher education, broke his silence on Thursday and stated that the ban on women attending universities was put in place to prevent the mixing of the genders as well as because he thought some subjects being taught went against the teachings of Islam.

UK PM Rishi Sunak said on Wednesday (December 21) that Taliban's latest decision was a "grave step backwards" and that "the world is watching".

The Taliban regime grabbed power immediately after US-led coalition forces left Afghanistan last year. Initially, the Taliban sought to assure the world that it will not revert to its radical ways as seen during their previous rule in late 1990s. They even said publicly that women would be allowed to attend universities.

However, the regime slowly began to roll back social progress that had been achieved in two decades under US-supported regime. Primary schools for girls were shut and unreasonable social restrictions on women made return.

The latest in the backward journey was Taliban's decision to prohibit women from going to universities.

The decision has already drawn sharp reactions from the United States and the United Nations

"It's another very troubling move and it's difficult to imagine how the country can develop, deal with all of the challenges that it has, without active participation of women and the education of women," said Stephen Dujarric, United Nations spokesperson.

Canadian law enforcement has already linked Apple's AirTag with an increase in local car thefts last year. Numerous accounts of people discovering AirTags concealed in their possessions have appeared on social media in recent months. One women, as per reports, said that she found the AirTag taped to her luggage. The apple AirTags price is not too much and one can easily get them from apple stores or online.

What does the latest lawsuit say?

The most recent accusation against Apple's AirTags, though, is that it was used by previous partners to follow women. Two women are suing Apple on the basis that AirTags were used to stalk them, despite the fact that the firm claims it does not have a GPS tracking unit. In the lawsuit filed in San Francisco, the two women claim that their previous partners utilised the AirTags to locate them. They contend as well that AirTags have been connected to the killings of women in Akron, Ohio, and Indianapolis this year.

Moreover, saying that with Apple's alleged negligence for AirTags they are "at danger" of being stalked, the two women sought unspecified damages in Monday's complaint. Lauren Hughes, one of the plaintiffs in the complaint filed on Monday, said her ex-boyfriend discovered her new location, where she moved to avoid him, by putting an AirTag in her car's wheel well.

How has Apple responded so far?

Apple has previously claimed that many safeguards are built into its AirTags to stop unauthorised tracking. Before releasing AirTags, Apple was well aware that they may be misused for illegal purposes however the company said that the gadget is meant to monitor objects, not people. "Unwanted tracking has long been a societal problem, and we took this concern seriously in the design of AirTag. It’s why the Find My network is built with privacy in mind, uses end-to-end encryption, and why we innovated with the first-ever proactive system to alert you of unwanted tracking," said Apple in February while giving out an update on AirTag.

How do AirTags function?

The gadgets transmit a Bluetooth signal that Apple's Find My Network can pick up on. The business claims to have developed a number of protections to prevent the tracking of individuals. When apart from an owner for a while, AirTags emit a beeping sound. Moreover, a notification should show on their phone warning them, if an AirTag is discovered travelling with someone it is not registered with.

Other voices

Since AirTag's release in April of last year, Apple said, people have written in to tell endless tales of how AirTag helped them reconnect with the things they cherish. "Thanks to AirTag and the Find My app, a customer who lost his wallet on the subway was able to track it down at a station across town. With the help of an AirTag placed inside a medical kit, a parent whose child lost critical medicine on the bus was later able to find it," said Apple sharing the stories.

For the first time ever, female referees have been chosen to officiate at the FIFA men's World Cup. Know everything about the Stephanie Frappart, Salima Mukansanga, and Yamashita Yoshimi, among the 36 referees chosen for the competition. As they officiate in the men's football World Cup in Qatar, these three referees are writing history. Three of the 69 assistant referees travelling to the World Cup are Neuza Back of Brazil, Karen Diaz Medina of Mexico, and Kathryn Nesbitt of the United States. Here is everything you need to know about the FIFA's trailblazing officiating trio.

Yamashita Yoshimi

After refereeing the 2019 Women's World Cup in France, Japanese referee Yamashita Yomishi will participate in a second World Cup in a row, this time creating history by officiating in the men's FIFA. She also served as the referee during a match between the United States and Sweden in the 2020 Olympic Games, which were held in 2021. As the first female referee to ever do so, Yamashita was on the whistle for FC Tokyo's 2-0 victory over Kyoto Sanga in the J1 League and Melbourne City's 2-1 victory over Jeonnam Dragons in the AFC Champions League. Despite the expectations and pressures that come with officiating the games, the 36-year-old is savouring the chance to contribute to history. She said that there are hardly any female referees in the Middle East and hence she would like to see that change, with the Qatar World Cup as the catalyst. Yoshimi also added that the fact that women are officiating for the first time at a FIFA men's World Cup is a "sign to other people that women's potential is always growing." She said it is something she feels strongly about.

Salima Mukansanga

Rwandan referee Salima Mukansanga has been officiating for FIFA World Cup since 2012. Mukansanga, as a young girl, always dreamt of playing basketball professionally. At one point, in a conversation with News Times, she said she liked basketball and wanted to take it very seriously however access to basketball infrastructure was hard. That's how she ended up in refereeing, which she affirmed she never regretted. It led Mukansanga to the 2019 Women's World Cup, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, and now Qatar. She was also involved in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics last year. Earlier this year, she also took charge at the men's Africa Cup of Nations. After naming as an official for the 2019 Women's World Cup, she said that officiating at the World Cup is "every referee’s dream."

Stephanie Frappart

Frappart, 38, has stunning success feathers to her cap. She took on the driver's seat in her first final in 2019 World Cup in France. In the same year, while continuing the chase to her dreams, she also officiated at the UEFA Super Cup final. In 2020, Frappart crafted history by becoming the first woman referee to take charge of a men's Champions League match. Her success story continued to prevail when a year later she took charge as Atletico Madrid faced off Chelsea in a second leg round of 16 tie in the women's UCL. She also refereed the 2022 Coupe de France final. Frappart's work was widely acknowledged and is evident with her win of the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) World's Best Woman Referee award three years on the bounce from 2019. Commenting on her impressive presence in the upcoming FIFA men's World Cup 2022, the Frenchwoman said, women referees at the mega games will send a strong message. She said it is a strong sign from FIFA and the authorities to have women referees. Frappart further hoped that this decision can make things happen for women.

Assistant women referees

In addition to the amazing women trio, there will be three more female officials. This is part of FIFA's selection of 69 assistant referees for the World Cup. Names of Neuza Back of Brazil, Karen Diaz Medina of Mexico, and Kathryn Nesbitt of the United States will be written in history as they join the tournament and officiate in Qatar.

Medina started off her career in refereeing by pure luck but she has strong sense that this position makes one fall more and more in love every day with football. USA's Nesbitt took up refereeing as a summer job up. It is interesting to note that up until 2019 Women's World Cup, she was a chemistry professor. She was named the Major League Soccer (MLS) Assistant Referee of the Year in 2020. It was a history-making feat for the USA star. In a conversation with FIFA she said it has been an absolute honour to have people say that she has become a role model for women. Meanwhile, the trajectory story for the 37-year-old Back is a pure delight to read.

Up until the press reported, Back did not even know that she has been selected in the 69-name list of assistant referees for men's FIFA World Cup 2022. She described the experience as very cool and indescribable. She termed it as a moment of joy and of gratitude. Yamashita Yoshimi After refereeing the 2019 Women's World Cup in France, Japanese referee Yamashita Yomishi will participate in a second World Cup in a row, this time creating history by officiating in the men's FIFA. Salima Mukansanga Rwandan referee Salima Mukansanga has been officiating for FIFA World Cup since 2012. After naming as an official for the 2019 Women's World Cup, she said that officiating at the World Cup is "every referee’s dream." Stephanie Frappart Frappart, 38, has stunning success feathers to her cap. Assistant women referees In addition to the amazing women trio, there will be three more female officials. But at the same time, she felt a little sense of responsibility, Back said while speaking to media outlets. The stakes are high and the pressure is on BUT DESPITE OF IT ALL the trailblazing officials selected for Qatar FIFA men's World Cup are ready to seize the opportunity provided, which has lead to the creation of history itself and become a defining moment.
