Telangana presents a striking gender paradox. While women in the state rank among the highest earners in India, greater income does not always translate into greater decision-making power at home. Data from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) highlights a gap between financial participation and household influence, raising important questions about empowerment beyond earnings.

The reported regulations have raised alarm among rights groups and international observers, particularly over provisions concerning consent and the authority given to male guardians. A study has shown that women aged 40 and above are going to electronic dance music events to improve their mental and physical health. Published in the Psychology of Music, it shows they are using it for "social connectedness, an outlet for self-expression, and a release from pressures of daily life." In doing so, they are also fighting society's prejudice against this age group, navigating people's views on what was considered "appropriate" behaviour for older, female clubbers. The research identified the ways they are keeping themselves associated with a music scene normally associated with the "youth" and revealed the extent to which ageing was shaping their involvement. A major new international study suggests that men’s brains may age faster than women’s challenging long-standing assumptions about brain ageing and Alzheimer’s disease.
Researchers analysed brain scans from more than 4,700 healthy adults and found greater brain shrinkage and decline across multiple regions in men. The findings raise new questions about why women are still nearly twice as likely to develop Alzheimer’s, despite slower overall brain ageing.
Experts say ageing alone does not cause Alzheimer’s, pointing instead to complex interactions between brain structure, inflammation, genetics and hormones. The study adds a new dimension to the global effort to understand how and why dementia develops.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is reportedly moving closer to introducing a blanket ban on transgender women competing in female categories across all sports.

IOC President Kirsty Coventry, elected as the first female president, set up a working group on women’s sport protection. Initial scientific findings suggest athletes born male may retain physiological advantages even after testosterone reduction.

While no official decisions have been taken, the ban could be implemented before the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, though it’s unlikely to affect February 2026 Winter Games. The IOC continues discussions on sex eligibility and DSD athletes, aiming to reach a global consensus.

Microplastics are small plastic particles formed after the degradation of plastics and have negative consequences for the environment and human health. Till now there was a growing concern about the chances of microplastics entering the food chain and having health impacts on humans.
Now, for the first time, microplastics have been found in human ovary follicular fluid, raising new questions about the potential impact of the toxic substance on women’s fertility. A new peer-reviewed research, published in Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety, detected microplastics in the follicular fluid of 14 out of 18 women undergoing assisted reproductive treatment at a fertility clinic in Salerno, Italy. Follicular fluid provides essential nutrients and biochemical signals for the developing eggs. Contamination with microplastics has implications for fertility, hormonal balance, and overall reproductive health, the authors wrote.

The findings are a major step toward finding out how microplastics impact the reproductive health of women, but are also “very alarming”, said Luigi Montano, a researcher at the University of Rome and study lead author.
“This discovery is an important warning signal about the invasiveness of these emerging contaminants,” the study says. Microplastics and even smaller nanoplastics have been traced from the top of Mt. Everest to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, and were also found in food. They are particularly dangerous because they can contain highly toxic compounds like Pfas, bisphenol and phthalates, which are linked to cancer, neurotoxicity, hormone disruption, and developmental toxicity. Microplastics have been found in the human body and can cross the brain and placental barriers. Britain’s highest court has declared that transgender women are not legally women in a landmark judgement on Wednesday (Apr 16).
The United Kingdom’s Supreme Court ruled that a woman is defined by “biological sex” under the equality legislation. It noted that trans individuals would not be disadvantaged by the significant decision that could impact sex-based rights across Scotland, England and Wales.

The judgment related to whether a trans woman with a gender recognition certificate is protected as a woman under the Equality Act. The verdict marks the end of a long-running legal battle.
The top court sided with campaign group For Women Scotland, which argued that sex-based protections should only apply to people who are born female. It challenged guidance issued by the Scottish government that said a trans woman with a gender recognition certificate was legally a woman. It had accompanied a 2018 law aimed at increasing the proportion of women on public sector boards.

The Supreme Court’s ruling in favour of For Women Scotland came following an appeal last November. The group had lost in the Scottish courts.

What did the court say?

“The unanimous decision of this court is that the terms ‘women’ and ‘sex’ in the Equality Act 2010 refer to a biological woman and biological sex,” Deputy President of the Supreme Court Patrick Hodge said.
“But we counsel against reading this judgment as a triumph for one or more groups in our society at the expense of another - it is not,” he added.

Scottish legal critics said that its definition could affect single-sex services for women like refuges, hospital wards, and sports.
However, transgender campaigners had highlighted that if the court ruled in favour of For Women Scotland, it could lead to discrimination against those with gender recognition certificates, especially regarding employment issues.

For the first time in Olympic Games history, the number and percentage of women participants will overtake their counterparts at the 2028 LA Olympics, with the former Olympic medalist and boxing veteran Mary Kom welcoming this momentous move with both hands. Following years of constant rise in their participation numbers, the number of women participants across all disciplines will be more than men in LA.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has decided to shrink the number of teams in the men’s football competition from 16 to 12; on the other hand, they expanded the women’s tournament by four teams, enlarging the number from 12 to 16. Besides, the addition of two teams in women’s water polo and an extra in the weight category in women’s boxing, making it 12 and seven, respectively, will see more women's spots (5655) than men’s (5543) across all 36 disciplines.

“It’s a momentous decision, one that will encourage a lot of women to get into sports. The current generation will get opportunities we didn’t get. Having won five World Championship medals from 2002 to 2010, Mary had to wait till 2012 to participate in her first-ever Olympic Games, as until then, women’s boxing wasn’t part of the Olympic programme. However, despite their inclusion, there were only three categories for women as opposed to ten for men.
Meanwhile, history was created twelve years later at the 2024 Paris Games, which saw an equal number of events for both genders for the first time. While it was 50-50 at the Paris Games, the percentage of women’s participants at the LA Games will be 50.5%.
Concerning India, they had 45 women participants among the contingent of 110, and the number might increase at the next Games should women’s hockey and cricket teams qualify.

Travel is no longer just a man's world—women are taking the lead, shaping the travel industry in ways that reflect their growing independence and financial power. Women now make up 64 per cent of global travelers, with 82 per cent calling the shots when it comes to family vacations. From solo getaways to multi-generational trips, women are not just exploring new destinations—they are redefining how and where we travel.

Solo trips soar: Women take the lead

Solo female travel, in particular, has soared. More women than ever before are venturing out alone, with nearly 40 per cent planning solo trips in 2025. This trend spans all ages, with older women especially embracing the freedom of solo journeys. These travels offer women the space to discover more about themselves, a form of self-care, and a chance to find joy in independence.
However, while adventure is calling, safety remains a key consideration. Women travelers prioritise destinations that offer not only beauty but also security, and with good reason. Many women are looking for welcoming cultures and destinations where they can feel safe and free to explore without worry. Countries like Japan and the Nordic nations stand out for their high safety ratings, offering solo female travelers peace of mind along with unforgettable experiences.
Alongside solo travel, group trips exclusively for women are gaining popularity. Traveling with other women allows for shared experiences, spontaneous adventures, and deeper connections. Whether it’s a girls’ getaway or a guided trip led by women, these journeys are designed to empower and inspire. Companies are also offering women-only cruises and tours to places like Alaska, Costa Rica, and France, creating spaces where women can bond and share memories.
Multi-generational travel is another emerging trend, with younger women traveling with their children and their own mothers. This type of trip fosters deep connections across generations, encouraging family bonding and creating lasting memories. It’s a wonderful way for women of all ages to reconnect and experience the world together.
As more women take control of their travel destinies, the industry is responding, offering tailored experiences that celebrate women’s empowerment. Whether exploring new cultures or seeking adventure, women are traveling with confidence, proving that the world is theirs to explore—one passport stamp at a time.
