A disturbing fertility scam taking place in Anambra State of Nigeria was recently brought to light by an investigation carried out by BBC Africa Eye.&nbsp;

In the investigation, it was revealed how desperate women are being exploited by the illegal clinics through false pregnancies and baby trafficking.&nbsp;

As per the investigation of BBC, women are being lured into promises of "miracle fertility treatments" which cost a hefty amount, by the scammers who pose as doctors in Nigeria.

Nigeria has one of the highest birth rates globally, and the women face extreme social pressure to conceive, and hence&nbsp;they adopt desperate measures for motherhood.

<h2>Here's how the horrific pregnancy scam&nbsp;unfolds in Nigeria</h2>

The women are made to believe that they are carrying the baby in their womb for 15 months after going through unconventional "treatment" at a "clinic".

During the treatment, the women are administered injections or made to consume certain drinks. Some substances are also inserted into their bodies.&nbsp;

These substances lead to physical changes like swollen stomachs, which make women believe they are pregnant.

The scammers warn the victims not to visit conventional doctors as they are informed that no scan or medical test can detect the baby, which they claim is allegedly growing outside the womb.

During the delivery time, the scammers ask women to pay for a very expensive and rare drug to induce labour.

During the delivery process, women are given sedatives or hallucinogens and then left with babies, which they believe they have birthed.

Narrating one such harrowing case to BBC, a woman identified as Chioma claimed to have carried her child for nearly 15 months.

<h2>How trafficking is connected to pregnancy scams?</h2>

The scam has been linked to baby trafficking networks by the authorities, reported BBC.&nbsp;

After Donald Trump's shocking but stunning victory in the United States presidential elections, women in the country have been recording and uploading videos based on murder fantasies.

In the videos, the women have been romanticising putting deadly poison in the beverages of men as a justifiable act in reaction to the fears about what would happen to abortion rights in Trump's second presidency.

A lot of videos shared on X and TikTok received millions of views and in these videos, young women are seen fiendishly grinning while they adulterate any drink or tea with an unknown substance.

<h2>Who is Giulia Tofana?</h2>

Giulia Tofana lived in 17th-century Italy and sold poison to wives who wanted to kill their abusive husbands. This resulted in the death of more than 600 men.

The signature brew of Tofana was a mixture of deadly ingredients like arsenic and belladonna called “Aqua Tofana”.

The concoction had proved to be very effective in those times and Tofana was considered a very prolific serial killer.

It was believed that the poison was flavourless and was not detectable after death. It was generally stored in ordinary cosmetics bottles.

In one of the online videos, a young woman with green hair had a large, spiked septum ring which had the text “Aqua Tofana isn’t that hard to make” superimposed on footage in which she was making a gesture of slitting a throat with her thumb.

A lot of videos also had Eminem's song “Venom” playing in the background with lyrics, “This f–king world better prepare to get laced because they’re gonna taste my venom.”

More than 370 million girls and women alive today, or one in every eight worldwide, experienced rape or sexual assault before the age of 18, the United Nations children's agency said on Wednesday.

The number rises to 650 million, or one in five, when taking into account "non-contact" forms of sexual violence, such as online or verbal abuse, UNICEF reported, in what it called the first global survey of the problem.

The report said that while girls and women were worst affected, 240 to 310 million boys and men, or around 1&nbsp;in 11, have experienced rape or sexual assault during childhood.

"The scale of this human rights violation is overwhelming, and it's been hard to fully grasp because of stigma, challenges in measurement, and limited investment in data collection," UNICEF said in releasing the report.

It comes ahead of an inaugural Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children in Colombia next month.

UNICEF said its findings highlight the urgent need for intensified global action, including by&nbsp;strengthening laws and helping children recognize and report sexual violence.

UNICEF said sexual violence cuts across geographical, cultural, and economic boundaries, but Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest number of victims, with 79 million girls and women, or 22 per cent affected. Eastern and South-Eastern Asia follow with 75 million, or 8 per cent.

In its data for women and girls, UNICEF estimated 73 million, or nine&nbsp;per cent, were affected in Central and Southern Asia; 68 million, or 14 per cent, in Europe and Northern America; 45 million, or 18 per cent, in Latin America and the Caribbean, and 29 million, or 15 per cent, in Northern Africa and Western Asia.

Oceania, with six&nbsp;million, had the highest number affected by percentage, at 34 per cent.

Risks were higher, rising to one&nbsp;in four, in "fragile settings," including those with weak institutions, UN&nbsp;peacekeeping forces, or large numbers of refugees, the report found.

UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell called sexual violence against children "a stain on our moral conscience.”

"It inflicts deep and lasting trauma, often by someone the child knows and trusts, in places where they should feel safe."

UNICEF said most childhood sexual violence occurs during adolescence, especially between ages 14 and 17, and those who suffer it face higher risks of sexually transmitted diseases, substance abuse and mental health issues.

"(T)he impact is further compounded when children delay disclosing their experiences ... or keep the abuse secret altogether," UNICEF said.

It said increased investment in data collection was needed to capture the full scale the problem, given persistent data gaps, particularly on boys’ experiences.

UNICEF said it based its estimates of girls' and women’s experiences on nationally representative surveys conducted between 2010 and 2022 in 120 countries and areas. It said estimates for boys and men were derived from a broader range of data sources and applied some indirect methods.

Japan has only 13 female Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) across approximately 1,600 top-listed companies in the country, a survey by Tokyo-based Kyodo News revealed.&nbsp;

The survey highlights that the Asian country is still struggling to increase diversity among its corporate decision-makers.

According to the survey, women lead just 0.8 per cent of the 1643 firms listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange's top-tier prime market. The data is based on investigations of fiscal 2023 financial statements released by the end of August.&nbsp;

The declining number also underlines the uphill struggle Japan's government faces in reaching its target of having women in at least 30 per cent of executive roles by the end of the decade.

Apart from the 29 firms that have been listed at the market's top tier for less than five years, the number of female CEOs at 1,614 Prime Market companies remained at between seven and nine for three years through fiscal 2022.&nbsp;

To further increase the number of female executives in the sector, the Japanese government has asked top-listed firms to raise the proportion of female executives to 30 per cent or more by 2030.&nbsp;

Last year, the figure increased to 16.2 per cent or 3,052 women, up from 1,502 in fiscal 2019.

Japan has only 13 female Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) across approximately 1,600 top-listed companies in the country, a survey by Tokyo-based Kyodo News revealed. The survey highlights that the Asian country is still struggling to increase diversity among its corporate decision-makers. According to the survey, women lead just 0.8 per cent of the 1643 firms listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange's top-tier prime market. The data is based on investigations of fiscal 2023 financial statements released by the end of August. The declining number also underlines the uphill struggle Japan's government faces in reaching its target of having women in at least 30 per cent of executive roles by the end of the decade. In a new study, the researchers have observed that the grey matter of the brain is probably shrinking by 80 per cent during pregnancy and creating "permanent etchings".&nbsp;

The researchers made the discovery when a pregnant neuroscientist went through two dozen brain scans during her pregnancy phase and then for the next two years postpartum.&nbsp;

Grey matter is&nbsp;one kind of tissue present in the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system) which is important for humans to function normally.&nbsp;

After the pregnancy came to an end, it was observed that the woman was able to regain some grey matter. The grey matter regained included the cell bodies of neurons and the connections present between them.

Co-senior author of the study and associate professor of psychological and brain sciences at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) Emily Jacobs said that the grey-matter volume in the affected brain areas of pregnant women decreased by 4 per cent on average.&nbsp;

"That's similar to the amount of reduction in puberty," said Jacobs, while speaking at a news conference on Thursday (Sep&nbsp;12).&nbsp;

During puberty, there is a hormone surge which comes with a decrease in grey matter volume as the excess tissue in the brain is pruned so that it can function more efficiently.&nbsp;

Jacobs stated that something similar may have been occurring in pregnancy.&nbsp;

"Sometimes people bristle when they hear that grey-matter volume decreases during pregnancy — like, 'That can't be a good thing,'" she explained.&nbsp;

However, "this change probably reflects the fine-tuning of neural circuits, not unlike the cortical thinning that happens during puberty," she added.

Jacobs suggested that there is a possibility that the brain's fine-tuning changes forever.&nbsp;

"Many of these changes seem to be what you might think of as permanent etchings in the brain," she said.

However, the other changes observed in the study were temporary.&nbsp;
