It was in the year 1884 when 22-year-old Rabindranath Tagore, subsumed in pain of separation, in a letter to his confidant, educationist and social reformer C F Andrews wrote, “She, my Queen, has died and my world has shut against the door of its inner apartment of beauty which gives on the real taste of freedom.”&nbsp;

The words were not just a mere expression of pain, but a grave loss that would later form his exemplary literary works. The woman, whose&nbsp;loss appeared unbearable to the greatest poet of his time, was his muse and sister-in-law Kadambari Devi.

The most famous and strongly impactful woman in Tagore's life, Kadambari Devi, was married to his brother at the age of 10. Describing her first glimpse in his house, Tagore in his autobiographical masterpiece My Boyhood Days (Chhelebelai) writes, “A new bride came to the house, slender gold bracelets on her delicate brown hands…I circled around her at a safe distance, but I did not dare to go near. She was enthroned at the centre of affection and I was only a neglected, insignificant child.”

After Tagore's mother passed away, Devi was given the duty to look after him. As the two grew up, they turned from playmates to literary companions to eventually the poet and his muse. When Tagore turned 17, he visited England for some time and continued writing letters to Kadambari. Later, he got a few letters published.

The letters left his family scandalised who construed their relationship as sexual and passionate and hence, decided to get Tagore married as soon as possible. On December 9, 1883, Tagore was married to 11-year-old Bhavatarini Devi, whom he later called Mrinalini.

Kadambari, who was a childless and neglected wife, was left traumatised by the whole event and after four months, she committed suicide through an opium overdose. What was left were mere words of Tagore's agony in a letter.&nbsp;“But where is the sweetheart of mine who was almost the only companion of my boyhood and with whom I spent my idle days of youth exploring the mysteries of dreamland? She, my Queen, has died and my world has shut against the door of its inner apartment of beauty which gives on the real taste of freedom.”

Annapurna (also known as Annabai or Anna) was the daughter of Mumbai-based doctor Atmaram Pandurang Turkhad. Tagore was sent by his brother to stay with the anglicised Turkhund family for some time before his voyage to Britain.

During the two-month stay, Tagore learnt spoken English from Anna, who had recently returned from England and had honed her conversational skills. According to Krishna Kripalani's book Tagore—A Life, a mutual affection bloomed between the two and Anna was given the nickname of 'Nalini' by Tagore, a name which was later used by the novelist multiple times.

After two months, the two parted ways. Annapurna later married Baroda High School and College's Scottish vice-principal Harold Littledale and settled in Edinburgh, where she died at the age of 33. However, till then she continued to use ‘Nalini’ as her literary moniker and Tagore's prose and poetry also continued remembering his 'Nalini'.

Tagore is said to have shared an affectionate relationship with 63-year-old widow, Victoria Ocampo. The poet, in his old age, lived with Ocampo in an isolated villa located outside Buenos Aires.

The lady took care of him as the poet's health declined. Some great poetry was written by Tagore which was dedicated to her. Describing her emotion for Tagore, Ocampo had called it a great “love tenderness” (amour de tendresse). However, their relationship remains complicated and all the literary works remain overshadowed by his undying love for Kadambari Devi.

Tagore and his women | Forgotten names who shaped the Nobel laureate's literature

A woman from Sandeshkhali in the east Indian state of West Bengal has alleged that individuals associated with the BJP coerced her into signing a blank sheet of paper, which was later filled with a false rape complaint bearing her name. This has added fuel to the already fiery political debate between the ruling Trinamool and the BJP, particularly heightened amid the ongoing election fervour.

Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas gained notoriety early this year when residents accused TMC's Sheikh Shahjahan and his associates of harassment. Shahjahan, expelled from Trinamool, was subsequently apprehended by the CBI after being on the run following a mob attack on Enforcement Directorate officials.

This comes as the Trinamool Congress filed a complaint with the Election Commission against several BJP leaders, including Suvendu Adhikari, alleging the dissemination of fabricated claims in the Sandeshkhali controversy.

The woman reportedly disclosed that during the visit of the National Commission for Women to the island, a person named Piyali prompted them to voice their grievances by filing a complaint.

"I told them that we had not received money as part of the 100 days' job scheme. I only wanted that money and had no other complaint. No rape happened. She (Piyali) made us sign on a blank sheet," the woman said. According to her, she later came to know that she is on the list of women who alleged rape by local Trinamool leaders.

Daughters-in-law of the woman condemned Piyali's actions, branding her as an outsider with affiliations to the BJP. They demanded accountability for the alleged deception. Moreover, she also claimed to be facing threats following their decision to expose Piyali.

"She is an outsider, she has come from somewhere else and talks big. We don't know how she has information about everyone here. Initially, she would just take part in the protests here. We later came to know she is with the BJP. She should be punished for lying to us and trapping us. I'm sure more people were deceived like this," the woman's daughters-in-law said.&nbsp;

India: Sandeshkhali woman accuses BJP of fabricating rape complaints

In the heartlands of rural India, amid the serene landscapes and rustic charm, a quiet revolution is taking place, led by the indomitable spirit of women like Shanti Devi. Coming from a small village Manpura in Jaipur in the northern Rajasthan state, Shanti embodies resilience and determination, rising at the crack of dawn to tend to her family of 16.

But Shanti's story isn't confined to the walls of her home. It stretches across the rug looms of her village, where she holds the title of 'Bunkasakhi,' leading a transformative movement in carpet weaving for Jaipur rugs over the past 15 years.&nbsp;

Beyond the intricacies of the loom, Shanti is on a mission to emancipate the women of her community.

<h2>A quiet struggle for financial freedom in a world of patriarchy</h2>

"I teach women the weaving technique," she explains, "so they aren't reliant on their alcoholic husbands."&nbsp;

Through her efforts, Shanti and scores of women like her are carving a path to independence and self-sufficiency for many, weaving a tapestry of hope and empowerment for generations to come.

The craft of hand-woven carpets may seem mundane to some, but the economics behind it unveils its profound significance. Each carpet demands four to five months of meticulous work, with 10 to 12 hours of daily labour from 16 to 18 women.&nbsp;

It's a laborious process that not only shapes carpets but also livelihoods.

The impact of their toil resonates deeply, with each weaver earning approximately 250 to 300 rupees a day, contributing not only to their families but also to the socio-economic fabric of their village.&nbsp;

Shanti Devi's journey serves as a testament to the transformative power of determination and community spirit in rural India.

Her story is one of inspiration, resonating with women across borders.&nbsp;

Collaborating with renowned designers like Gauri Khan, wife of Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan, Shanti Devi's carpets transcend mere threads and fibres.

They become symbols of resilience and artistry, adorning homes worldwide with their intricate designs and rich cultural heritage.

From humble beginnings in his father's shoe shop, Chaudhry embarked on a journey fuelled by a desire for impact and change.

In 1978, armed with a loan of Rs 5,000 from his father and a vision to transform labourers into artists, Chaudhry laid the foundation of Jaipur Rugs with just seven looms and seven weavers.&nbsp;

Today, his enterprise boasts over 7000 looms, providing livelihoods for more than 40,000 artisans, 80% of whom are women, like Shanti Devi.

Chaudhry's dedication and entrepreneurial spirit not only built a successful business but also became a catalyst for socio-economic growth in rural India.&nbsp;

His journey underscores the transformative power of initiative and perseverance, driving progress and prosperity across 600 villages in 6 states of the country.

<h2>Championing handmade products in a world of mechanisation</h2>

But Chaudhry's vision extends beyond mere business; it embodies a commitment to empowering artisans and fostering creativity. Programmes like 'Manchaha' and 'Freedom Manchaha' -- basically do your own design -- allow weavers to unleash their imagination, weaving carpets that are a reflection of their dreams and aspirations.

These carpets, crafted with passion and skill, find homes not only in India's upscale showrooms but also in over 80 countries worldwide. The booming carpet industry isn't just about commerce; it's about preserving tradition and heritage, while empowering communities and uplifting lives.

In a world dominated by mechanisation and mass production, companies like Jaipur Rugs stand as beacons of hope, championing the cause of handmade products and giving back to society in every possible way.

As India continues its journey towards development and progress, the stories of Shanti Devi and Nandkishore Chaudhry serve as guiding lights, illuminating the path towards a brighter, more inclusive future for all.

A global gender health gap analysis has found that women experience more years in poor health than men. Researchers found that illness and disability-causing conditions such as musculoskeletal problems, mental health issues and headache disorders, particularly affect women.&nbsp;

The findings of the study were published in the Lancet Public Health journal.&nbsp;

The study examined the impact of the world's 20 leading causes of diseases. It found that globally there has been limited progress in bridging health gaps over the past three decades.

<h2>Men are affected by conditions that cause premature death</h2>

The study found that men are disproportionately affected by conditions that cause premature death such as cardiovascular diseases, respiratory and liver diseases, Covid and road injuries.

<h2>But don't women live longer than men?</h2>

Yes. That's true. Women live about seven years longer than men&nbsp;on average. But most of them live with higher levels of illness and disability throughout their lives. The health differences, the study found, between women and men continue to grow with age.&nbsp;

The study’s senior author, Dr Luisa Sorio Flor at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), University of Washington, said in a statement: "This report clearly shows that over the past 30 years global progress on health has been uneven."

"Females have longer lives but live more years in poor health, with limited progress made in reducing the burden of conditions leading to illness and disability, underscoring the urgent need for greater attention to non-fatal consequences that limit women’s physical and mental function, especially at older ages. Similarly, males are experiencing a much higher and growing burden of disease with fatal consequences."

The study is also a call for countries to expand their health data classified on the basis of sex and gender data, said Sorio Flor. "The timing is right for this study and call to action – not only because of where the evidence is now, but because COVID-19 has starkly reminded us that sex differences can profoundly impact health outcomes."

“One key point the study highlights is how females and males differ in many biological and social factors that fluctuate and, sometimes, accumulate over time, resulting in them experiencing health and disease differently at each stage of life and across world regions.

"The challenge now is to design, implement and evaluate sex- and gender-informed ways of preventing and treating the major causes of morbidity and premature mortality from an early age and across diverse populations."

Among the conditions studied, the findings suggested that women are put at a disadvantage by conditions such as back pain, depressive disorders, headache disorders, anxiety disorders, bone and muscle disorders, Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, and HIV and Aids.

The study found that these conditions contribute to illness and disability throughout life as opposed to leading to premature death.

Australian police have said that the man, who fatally stabbed six people at a shopping centre in Bondi, Sydney, may have been targetting women.

On Saturday (April 13), 40-year-old Joel Cauchi created chaos and panic amid the crowd in the Westfield Bondi Junction complex as he started stabbing people using a long blade.

Among the six people who died from stabbing, five were women. Many others, including a baby, also suffered injuries.

Speaking to Australia's ABC News, New South Wales police commissioner said that it was "obvious" Cauchi was aiming at women.

The lone man&nbsp;killed in the stabbing attack&nbsp;was a 30-year-old security guard named Faraz Tahir who suffered injuries while trying to intervene in the attack.&nbsp;

Speaking to ABC News Breakfast, commissioner Karen Webb said, "The videos speak for themselves, don't they? It's obvious to me, it's obvious to detectives... that the offender focused on women and avoided the men. That's certainly a line for inquiry for us."

"We don't know what was operating in the mind of the offender and that's why it's important now that detectives spend so much time interviewing those who know him," he added.

According to the witnesses, the attacker was wearing shorts and an Australian national rugby league jersey. He was seen running in the mall while carrying a knife in his hand. Inspector Amy Scott confronted the man and killed him.

According to the police, Cauchi had mental health issues earlier and no other specific motive was determined.

The police already knew the man, however, he was never charged or arrested in his home state Queensland. According to the Queensland Police, the man was first diagnosed with mental illness at the age of 17.

<h2>Australia marks day of mourning&nbsp;</h2>

The stabbing attack - which took place at one of the most popular and biggest shopping centres in the country - sent a wave of shock&nbsp;in the country, where mass killings happen rarely.

Speaking to ABC News about the incident, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Monday (April 15) said that "the gender breakdown is, of course, concerning".

Across the&nbsp;country,&nbsp;flags will be flown at half-mast on Monday and the lights were lit on the sails of Sydney Opera House in tribute to the victims.

"Sexual harassment leaves a mark," on statues and on humans. Throughout Germany, large white placards have been strategically placed to expose the trauma that comes with sexual abuse. How? Through what is in front of the placards: Bronze statues of women with their breasts visibly many shades lighter because of all the groping and touching at the hands of tourists and locals.

<h2>Unsilence the violence</h2>

German women's rights organisation Terre des Femmes has launched a campaign titled "Unisilence the violence," to bring attention to the sexual harassment women face throughout their lives.

According to the group, two out of three women experience sexual harassment at some point in their lives.

In a press release, Sina Ton of Terre des Femmes pointed out that "Sexual harassment is a problem that is far too often trivialized or ignored."

"We must work together to ensure that the voices of victims are heard and that perpetrators are held accountable," it added.

<h2>Not even statues are spared</h2>

The group, Terre des Femmes, has installed their placards behind iconic statues of women, which are an important part of humanity's cultural history: the Juliet Capulet statue in Munich's Marienplatz; the "Youth" statue in Bremen's Hoetgerhof; and in front of the "Frau Rhein" statue that is part of the Neptune fountain in central Berlin.

The group has also posted QR codes through which the statues themselves can tell their stories in audio form.

As Jammu and Kashmir is gearing up for both parliamentary as well as assembly elections this year, the election commission recently said that women voters will comprise around 49 per cent of the union territory.

The women will have a huge responsibility of deciding the political future of Jammu and Kashmir in these upcoming elections. That's not all,&nbsp;the women of the region are also joining active politics in large&nbsp;numbers.

According to the Election Commission of India, there are around 86.93 lakh (8.69 million) voters in Jammu and Kashmir, and among them 42.58 lakh (4.25 million) are female voters.

This is&nbsp;around 49 per cent of the total voters, which makes them extremely important in deciding the&nbsp;political course of the union territory.&nbsp;&nbsp;The large number of women voters have led political parties to woo them.

''Women will be at the forefront to decide who will govern the union territory. Women will look at the history of political parties and how these parties have worked to empower women. They also look at the educational opportunities created by the political parties. Women will also look at how the political parties&nbsp;stood for women's rights. And also, the representation by the political parties. Women will take a 360 view of what has been done for them. The pink booths are token representations, '' said Ifra Jan, National Conference spokesperson.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;representation of women in the assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir has been very low. In the 2014 assembly elections out of 831 candidates, only 28 were female contestants. Jammu and Kashmir has only had one female chief minister so far. Mehbooba Mufti, the former chief minister and leader of&nbsp;Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is seeing an increase in&nbsp;participation of women.

''It's not easy but if they join it's not difficult. Our party is led by a female, Mehbooba Mufti, &nbsp;and she came at a time when there were hardly any women in politics. It was a male-dominated area, and she became the first female chief minister of the state. She is an idol for me and the entire women population of the state. I look up to her for the work she has done, and she has been the lone voice of Kashmir. We have to encourage more and more women since there is a reservation, '' said Ahra Syed, PDP.&nbsp;

The women politicians in the Kashmir valley are happy that 49 per cent of the voters in the union territory are females and are hopeful that they will vote and choose their candidates carefully. Some of them are also inviting young women to join politics to change the political scenario as well as help women in general.&nbsp;

"In the earlier times, it was only men who were given the right to vote but with time things have changed and having so many female voters will bring a lot of change in the society. I am really happy that we women are coming out of our homes and going to polling booths choosing what is good for us and beneficial for us. Women are usually given less credit for the work but this time things will turn around and women will bring change. It used to be difficult to get into politics but with new generations women are getting many opportunities. Women need not to be scared of joining politics. A lot of young women want to come and join politics,'' said Bisma Meer from People's Conference.&nbsp;

Our party is led by a female, Mehbooba Mufti, and she came at a time when there were hardly any women in politics. It was a male-dominated area, and she became the first female chief minister of the state. She is an idol for me and the entire women population of the state. I look up to her for the work she has done, and she has been the lone voice of Kashmir. We have to encourage more and more women since there is a reservation, '' said Ahra Syed, PDP. As our reliance on digital technology continues to grow, so does the importance of cybersecurity. It's no longer just about protecting data; it's about making sure the foundation of our interconnected world remains safe. Cyber threats are diverse and continually changing, requiring a variety of skills to effectively combat them. This means there is a need to better recognize the need for equally diverse perspectives in the task forces that battle these threats.

Over the course of my career, I have witnessed women peers bringing unique perspectives and problem-solving skills, especially when it comes to security. They can contribute significantly to creating a more thorough, adaptable and responsible cybersecurity strategy for individuals and organizations. However, despite the progress being made, there has been a historical lack of women in deeptech, making their inclusion in cybersecurity an important step toward a safer digital future.

The underrepresentation challenge

Taking a closer look at the cybersecurity industry shows a clear problem—a gender gap that persists despite progress in other professions. Statistics indicate that from 2018 to 2023, the number of women in cybersecurity jobs in India increased by over 10%. This was a growth from around 11% to 22% due to the efforts of initiatives like CyberShikshaa and corporate initiatives towards Inclusion and Diversity that brought in diverse workforce into the organizations. &nbsp;While this is an encouraging trend, there is still a huge gap to cover and there needs to be focused effort to bridge this gap both in academics and industry.

Navigating professional challenges

Despite the efforts made by organizations to promote gender equality, women continue to face challenges in the workplace ranging from workplace discrimination, lack of confidence and even imposter syndrome. Unconscious biases and gender stereotypes in the industry hinder the professional growth of women, highlighting the need for a change in organizational culture. It is important to create a supportive environment that empowers women to embrace their skills and build resilience.

Building a supportive network

Mentorship programs and networking communities are crucial for career development, especially for women in tech who may not see as many female role models. Additionally, encouraging a culture of support and collaboration within the industry ensures knowledge-sharing and skill development. These initiatives can not only bridge the gender gap but also create an environment where women feel empowered to thrive, guided by experienced mentors.

Promoting diversity and inclusivity

Advocating for workplace initiatives that promote equal opportunity is essential. Collaboration and diverse thinking are crucial in developing innovative and effective cybersecurity strategies, necessitating a diverse workforce. Activities like hackathons and coding quests can bring teams together and help women showcase their skills first-hand. Unbiased recruitment through anonymous skill-based hiring can also help bring more diversity into the organization. Strategies for skill development and recruitment, with a focus on fostering diversity, enrich the talent pool and contribute to building a more resilient cybersecurity workforce.

The way ahead

Empowering women in cybersecurity is a crucial journey for the industry. Recognizing the unique challenges women face, fostering a supportive network, and challenging gender norms pave the way for a more inclusive digital future.&nbsp;

As cybersecurity threats become more complex, embracing diverse perspectives is vital. The call to action is clear—organizations, industry leaders, and professionals must unite to build a cybersecurity landscape that thrives on diversity, ensuring a safer and more resilient digital world for all.

Expert voice | Empowering women in cybersecurity: Navigating challenges & breaking barriers

The call for diversity and inclusion in the corporate landscape has been echoing louder than ever before. We see many organisations acknowledging the critical importance of not only including women in the workforce but also fostering a strong female representation in leadership. Companies, today, are directing their attention towards a strategic overhaul of employee engagement to better accommodate women and encourage their growth.

The technology sector in India has seen a continuous increase in the contribution of women. Today, 43% of STEM course enrollees are women, &nbsp;among the the highest in the world. However, we still see a discrepancy in the job market, as only 14% of the tech leadership roles in the country are held by women. To bridge this gap, organisations must take conscious steps towards inclusive hiring and policies that will improve gender diversity ratios within the company.&nbsp;

Reimagining leadership paradigms

To nurture women leaders, a crucial stride is redefining existing leadership frameworks. This means acknowledging inclusivity as an integral part of leadership competencies and initiatives. It's important to transition from conventional to inclusive leadership styles, recognising and leveraging the unique strengths that women bring to the forefront.

Empowering mentorship, training, and sponsorship initiatives

Crafting and implementing tailor-made mentorship and sponsorship programs specifically for women's leadership development plays a vital role. To better boost our women towards leadership, we must first understand their foundation, challenges, strengths, and needs. Creating a supportive network where aspiring women leaders can seek guidance and sponsorship is indispensable. It's not merely about mentorship; it's about cultivating a community that champions the success of its members.

At the same time, customised leadership training programs play a crucial role in arming women with the skills essential for leadership roles. Addressing gender bias within training initiatives ensures that development opportunities are universally accessible, and equitable and helps foster an environment where talent stands as the sole criterion for progress.

Embracing flexibility

Acknowledging and embracing flexibility becomes paramount when it comes to empowering women. Initiatives promoting work-life balance, including flexible work arrangements and a results-oriented culture, all contribute to creating an environment where women can flourish both personally and professionally. Inclusive policies, such as maternity and paternity leave, also showcase an organisation's commitment to supporting caregivers, levelling the playing field for all.

Strategic communication approaches

Transparent communication stands as another cornerstone of a successful organisational transformation. Clearly articulating diversity goals and fostering an open dialogue on gender equality contribute to a culture where every voice feels heard and valued. It is also important for leaders to set the tone for a company’s commitment to equality. In doing so, they create a supportive environment where all employees feel valued, empowered, and motivated. It's not solely about policies; it's about instigating a mindset shift within the organisation.

Quantifying impact

Establishing key performance indicators (KPIs) becomes imperative for monitoring the impact of our initiatives. Regular audits and feedback mechanisms allow us to proactively adjust based on real-time insights. This adaptive approach ensures our strategies remain agile and responsive to the evolving needs of our workforce.
&nbsp;
The way forward

As we reshape the organisational landscape through consistent efforts, let us recognise that the journey is as consequential as the destination. Our commitment to nurturing women leaders is an ongoing mission, marked by an iterative approach to employee engagement and continuous improvements based on feedback. Adapting to the ever-changing dynamics of the workforce ensures our strategies stay pertinent and effective.

By embracing inclusivity, flexibility, and agile strategies, we pave the way for a future where women leaders thrive, and our organisations and industries flourish. Together, we can create a workplace where diversity is not just a buzzword but a lived reality, affording every individual the opportunity to realise their full potential.
