<p>Sikkim, the only Indian state without access to railways, is all set to undergo a connectivity revolution. As per news agency ANI, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of the state’s first railway station on Monday (Feb 26).</p>

<p>“Rangpo station is the form of a touristic and defensive point of view for Sikkim and India”, said Deputy Railway Manager of Alipurduar, Amarjeet Agrawal.</p>

<p>“Basically, Sikkim did not have a railway line earlier. The government has signed this project in three phases. In the first phase, Sevoke to the Rangpo rail project; in the second&nbsp;phase, from Rangpo to Gangtok; and the third phase, from Gangtok to Nathula,” the official added.</p>

<p>Sikkim became India's part on 16 May 1975 as the country's&nbsp;22nd state when&nbsp;the monarchy was abolished.</p>

<p>The Sikkim railway station will be built as a part of the Sivok-Rangpo railway project, launched back in October 2009. The railway line’s projected length is almost 45km, spanning from West Bengal’s Sivok to Sikkim’s Rangpo.</p>

<p>The line will have five stations in total, including one in Teesta Bazar, which could be India’s first underground halt station. The line will have four open crossing stations (Sivok, Riyang, Melli, Rangpo).</p>

<p>According to project director Mohinder Singh, out of 45 km, three and a half km is part of Sikkim state and 41.5 km is part of West Bengal.</p>

<p>He further adds details about the Teesta Bazar railway station. "Teesta Bazar station could be an underground railway station,” he said.</p>

This station is very relevant, because, Teesta bazar connects Darjeeling to Gangtok so it could be convenient for the passengers who want to go to Darjeeling or Gangtok," he was quoted as saying by media reports.</p>

<p>The 45 km-long route primarily comprises tunnels, along with bridges and open cutting/filling of station yards. Of the total 44.96 km length, 38.65 km (86 per cent) comprises tunnels while 2.24 km (5 per cent) comprises bridges.</p>

<p>According to reports, the tunnelling has been done using the latest NATM (New Austrian Tunnelling Method) technique.</p>

Not only Sita, but I also don't support the naming of a lion Akbar. He was a very efficient and noble Mughal emperor. Very successful and secular Mughal emperor. If it is already named, the state authority should shun it and avoid it," Justice Bhattacharyya said.</p>

<p>Indian Supreme Court on Monday (Feb 19) rejected a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking a court-monitored probe by government agencies into the violence in Sandeshkhali village in West Bengal state.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India's top court said that the incident that happened in Sandeshkhali could not be compared to the violence in northern eastern state of Manipur. A bench of Justices BV Nagarathna and Augustine George Masih said that the Calcutta High Court is already seized of the matter.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The bench said: "The local high court will be the best to assess the situation. Let there be no dual forums." The bench also granted the PIL petitioner the liberty to approach the high court.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This development comes amid reports that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari apparently said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit the region.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per reports, Adhikari was granted permission by the Calcutta High Court to visit Sandehkhali. He is expected to visit the gram panchayat in Sandeshkhali Block-II on Tuesday, as directed by Justice Kaushik Chanda.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What's happening in Sandeshkhali?&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Sandeshkhali is a village in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district. It has seen violent protests amid allegations that a local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and his supporters sexually abused women.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Several women have accused local TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh and his allies of land-grabbing and sexual abuse. As per the report, Sheikh has been on the run.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While talking to the media, National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Rekha Sharma said that several women came forward and complained about molestation when she visited Sandeshkhali.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Why did Chakraborty resign?</strong></h2>

<p>The first-time MP from Jadavpur, a locality south of the state capital Kolkata&nbsp;went to the state assembly in the afternoon (local time) to meet with Banerjee," reported PTI.</p>

<p>“Today, I met our party supremo. I had submitted my resignation to her on February 13. I have understood in all these years that politics is not my cup of tea,” she told reporters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“I have definitely resigned, but my resignation hasn't been accepted. I have coordinated with the CM, and she assured me that she will take care of everything," Mimi added.</p>

<p>When asked about why she tendered her resignation to the TMC chief and not the Lok Sabha Speaker as per the norm, the actor-turned-politician said “Once I get the nod from the TMC, I will submit it to the Speaker.”</p>

<p>Notably, the 35-year-old who was elected from Jadavpur in 2019 on a TMC ticket, also resigned from two Parliament committees – the Standing Committee on Industrial Affairs of Parliament and the Joint Committee of Union Ministry of Power and New and Renewable Energy, earlier this week.</p>

<p>“Politics is not for me. You have to promote someone here (in politics) if you are helping someone...Besides being a politician, I also work as an actor. I have equal responsibilities,” Chakraborty told ANI news agency.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The actor-turned-politician also revealed that she had tried resigning from her post back in 2022, but the West Bengal CM rejected it at that time.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“I wanted to tell her (Banerjee) about my resignation from a party that gave me an opportunity to go ahead. I had also told her in 2022 about my resignation from the post of an MP. She had rejected it at that time," she said.</p>

<p>A Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) sepoy was killed by a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan (soldier) along the India-Bangladesh international border in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district on Monday (Jan 22) during an attempt to foil a cattle smuggling bid.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The BGB sepoy was not in uniform and allegedly 'disguised as a cattle smuggler', according to a PTI report. The incident transpired when a group of Bangladeshi cattle smugglers attempted to cross over to India by breaching the newly installed barbed wire fence.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Indian soldier noticed the group of unidentified individuals, engaging in suspicious activities and approached them.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"When the jawan confronted the smugglers, they, realising that he was alone, surrounded him and attacked him using sharp-edged sickles," a BSF official stated.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Upon being attacked, the soldier engaged in self-defence and retaliated by opening fire. Consequently, one of the attackers, who turned out to be a BGB sepoy, suffered injuries.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The rest of the attackers utilised the heavy fog in the area to evade the Indian soldier and managed to hop over to the other side of the fence with the cattle.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After the incident, during a flag meeting, BGB informed BSF that one of its personnel was missing and suspected he had crossed into the Indian side.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Hearing the sound of fire, other jawans reached the spot and immediately removed the injured man and got him admitted to a government hospital in Bongaon, where he died during treatment. During a thorough search, one animal and some sharp weapons were found at the site," BSF said.</p>

<p>"Upon identification from a photograph, it was known that the deceased man was Mohammad Riyasudin, serving as a sepoy in BGB, and was moving with cattle smugglers," it added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Additionally, BSF apprised the Ministry of External Affairs and Bangladesh High Commission in Kolkata of the incident.&nbsp;</p>

<p>West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Friday (Jan 5) condemned the attack on members of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) team and called it a "ghastly incident". He also summoned the Home Secretary and the Director General of Police (DGP) over their alleged role in the attack.</p>

<p>While speaking to the press, he said it&nbsp;is the prime responsibility of a&nbsp;government to bar vandalism in a democracy.</p>

<p>"It is a ghastly incident. It is alarming and deplorable. It is the duty of a civilised government to stop barbarism and vandalism in a democracy. If a government fails in its basic duty, then the Constitution of India will take its course. I reserve all my constitutional options for appropriate action. This pre-election violence should find an early end, and this is the beginning of that end," said Bose.</p>

<p>On Thursday night (Jan 4),&nbsp;an Enforcement Directorate team was attacked by a mob and their vehicles vandalised in Sandeshkhali village of North 24 Parganas in West Bengal.</p>

<p>This happened at the time the agency was conducting raids at the residence of former Bongaon Municipality Chairman Shankar Adhya&nbsp;and TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan's house over their role in an alleged ration scam case, said an ED official.</p>

<p>Shahjahan is the Fisheries and Animal Resources Officer of North 24 Parganas Zilla Parishad as well as Block President of Sandeshkhali 1.</p>

<p>Two&nbsp;ED officials suffered injuries in the incident.</p>

<p>A member of the raiding ED team said, "Eight people came to the spot. We three moved from the incident spot ...they attacked us."</p>

<p>TMC MP Santanu Sen, however, claimed that the officials of the federal agency 'provoked' the locals which led to a counter-reaction from the people.</p>

<p>"The officers of the Central investigation agency surrounded by the Central forces provoked the local people. That's why there were counter-reactions continuously," he said.</p>

<p>Sen also said that the people of the country are 'frustrated' with actions taken by the central agencies which are being 'monitored from Delhi'.</p>

<p>"The real fact is the people of India are frustrated watching this deep-rooted conspiracy engineered and monitored from Delhi daily and that too in the case of TMC in West Bengal...On the contrary, the person who's posting all this on social media is topping the list of corruption. He was found taking money before the camera. His other family members are accused of corruption but no action was taken against them because they belong to BJP," said Sen.</p>

<p>For the coming days, a moderate to heavy rainfall warning has been issued for the northern Tamil Nadu coast and Puducherry.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Fishers have been issued warning about adverse weather at sea, owing to the prevailing weather system. Gusty winds of 55kmph are forecast along the Tamil Nadu coast for the next two days. India: At least five killed in explosion at ‘illegal’ firecracker factory in West Bengal's Duttapukur

<p>Reports of massive political violence have emerged from India’s eastern state of West Bengal, where crucial local elections are taking place ahead of the general election slated to be held next year. Zee News reported at least 14&nbsp;people dead as rural West Bengal voted for the&nbsp;three-tier panchayat elections. Among the dead were six workers of the ruling Trinamool Congress, one worker each of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Left, Congress and ISF, and another person whose political identity could not be known. Although, the BJP claimed that the death toll had reached 15, but there was no such confirmation from the state authorities till the filing of this report.</p>

<p>The state has been reeling under political violence since the elections were announced on June 8.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Ruling and opposition parties trade barbs</strong></h2>

<p>West Bengal, which is ruled by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of Trinamool Congress (TMC), has had a long history of political violence taking place during election season. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which sits in opposition in the state, has long accused the TMC of harbouring political ‘goons’.</p>

<p>As reports of violence surfaced in the state on Saturday, BJP state chief Sukanta Majumdar accused a TMC candidate of murdering an independent Muslim candidate.<br />

Majumdar tweeted, “Bloodshed in West Bengal in Panchayat Election. TMC candidate killed an independent Muslim candidate in North 24, Parganas dist. TMC knows only language of violence, murder and booth capturing. CM @MamataOfficial along with @CEOWestBengal is responsible for these murders."</p>

<p>State Governor CV Ananda Bose also condemned the violence, saying that an election day should be considered “most sacred for democracy” and that elections should take place through ballots and not bullets.</p>

<p>"I have been in the field right from the morning...People requested me and stopped my motorcade on the way. They told me about the murders happening around them, told me about the goons not allowing them to go to the polling booths...It should cause concern to all of us. This is the most sacred day for democracy...The election must be through ballots and not bullets," he was quoted as saying by local media.</p>

Although, the BJP claimed that the death toll had reached 15, but there was no such confirmation from the state authorities till the filing of this report. The state has been reeling under political violence since the elections were announced on June 8. "I have been in the field right from the morning...People requested me and stopped my motorcade on the way. They told me about the murders happening around them, told me about the goons not allowing them to go to the polling booths...It should cause concern to all of us. This is the most sacred day for democracy...The election must be through ballots and not bullets," he was quoted as saying by local media. <p>An airport official told ANI that the fire broke out at&nbsp;Kolkata airport's 3C departure terminal building.&nbsp;As per Indian media reports, several fire&nbsp;tenders rushed to the spot after&nbsp;the&nbsp;blaze erupted in front of gate number 3C.&nbsp;<br />

The cause of the fire was not immediately known but&nbsp;officials said after initial investigation that short circuit could be the reason for the fire. It was also later confirmed that no flight arrivals or departures at the airport were affected due to the incident.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Response to the incident</strong></h2>

<p>State Fire Services Minister Sujit Bose told PTI, that his department sent four fire tenders to assist the Airports Authority Of India (AAI) in fighting the blaze at the Kolkata airport.</p>

<p>"Initially, it seems that some fault related to the air conditioning system caused the fire. The exact reason behind it will be known after investigation," said Bose.</p>

The Kolkata Airport officials took to Twitter and said, "There was a minor fire &amp; smoke in the check in area portal D&nbsp;at around&nbsp;9:12 pm (local time)&nbsp;and was fully extinguished&nbsp;by 9:40 pm (local time)."</p>

<p>It added, "All passengers were evacuated safely and check in process suspended due to presence of smoke in the check in area."&nbsp;The officials also said that the check-in and operation will continue by 10:15 pm. (local time).&nbsp;<br />

The Indian&nbsp;Civil Aviation&nbsp;minister&nbsp;Jyotiraditya Scindia also took to Twitter and described the incident as "unfortunate" but "minor" and said he is in touch with the&nbsp;airport director.</p>

<p>The factory was located in Egra of Purba Medinipur district in West Bengal.</p>

<p>As per Banerjee, the firecrackers were "being sent to Odisha and local labourers were working there." She also stated that&nbsp;"an investigation is underway". The probe is being undertaken by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).</p>

<p>The Trinamool Congress leader has announced that the next of kin of the deceased will get a compensation of INR 2.5 lakh each (USD 3,040 approx), while the injured will get INR 1 lakh (around USD 1,200).</p>

<p>The owner of the factory was reportedly arrested last October for running the factory and is now on the run. He is believed to have fled to the neighbouring state of Odisha after the explosion.</p>

<p>"He was arrested in October last year but got bail from the court. He fled the state soon after the explosion. I will ask the police to share his details with their counterparts in Odisha so that he is arrested immediately," said Banerjee.</p>

<p>As per the chief minister, action will be taken against the local police chief of Egra police station as "he had no information that an illegal firecracker unit was operating" in the area.</p>

<p>Leader of Opposition and senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has demanded a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into the explosion.</p>

<p>Reacting to the demand, Banerjee said, "We do not have any objection to the NIA probe. But I would like to point out that the probe by the CID has already started."</p>

<p>Expressing fear that state police might illegally shift the bodies, Adhikari also demanded that central forces be immediately deployed in the area.</p>

<p>India's Union Culture Minister G Kishan Reddy said that an international advisory body has recommended Santiniketan, the place where Rabindranath Tagore built Visva Bharati over a century ago, for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While speaking to reporters at a media interaction on Wednesday, Reddy said the&nbsp;recommendation has made the prospect of Santiniketan's listing "almost certain" and hopefully, the World Heritage Committee will accept it. He said that India is likely to have another reason to rejoice in September.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Authorities of the university have also hailed the decision, calling it a "proud moment" and its spokesperson Mahua Bandyopadhyay told news agency PTI on Wednesday: "To our knowledge, Visva Bharati is the first living university in India which will be bestowed with the honour."&nbsp;</p>

<p>She further said that a top Archeological Survey of India official informed the university on Tuesday about the recommendation and the "news coming on the birth anniversary of Gurudev (Rabindra Nath Tagore) should be a proud moment for Bengal and the country".&nbsp;</p>

<p>India is gearing up to conduct the first trial run of the underwater metro train in Kolkata. Under West Bengal's Hooghly River, tunnels have been constructed for the trial.</p>

<p>Two tunnels have been constructed between the East-West Metro Corridor, which connects Sector V in Salt Lake to Howrah Maidan, beneath the Hooghly.</p>

<p>The Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC) had scheduled a Sunday trial run on one part of this route, however, the officials abruptly postponed it.</p>

<p>The corporation stated that they will soon conduct the trial run. In the trial run, a metro train having two to six coaches will travel the 4.8 km-long stretches between Esplanade and Howrah Maidan.</p>

<p>In 1984, the first metro in the nation was also inaugurated in Kolkata city. The metro started running in New Delhi in 2002, much later than in Kolkata.</p>

<p>The metro train will run at a speed of 80km/h in the tunnels carved out from the Hooghly riverbed. It will take less than a minute to cover the passage beneath the river.</p>

<p>The 16 km long rail route has underground sections spread over 10.8 km length. The part of the river, which is downstream, is also included.</p>

<p>The metro train will be 13 metres beneath the Hooghly River’s bed and the Howrah metro station will be 33 deep, making it the deepest station in the country. The tunnel will have exists for emergencies like earthquakes.</p>

<p>Approximately, 157 crores have been spent per kilometre to construct an underwater tunnel inside the Hooghly River.</p>

<p>According to the report, the commercial service's commencement will depend on the success of the trials. The KMRC had earlier stated that India's first underwater metro service, called the East-West Metro Corridor project, is likely to get completed by December 2023.</p>

<p>KMRC General Manager Civil Shailesh Kumar said, “The ongoing underwater tunnel project is likely to be completed by December 2023. Some rehabilitation works are in process and other issues are delaying the completion of the underwater metro project.”</p>

<p>The East-West corridor of Kolkata Metro is 15 kilometres long and stretches from Howrah to Salt Lake City Stadium.</p>
