The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), the Indian political party with its bastion in West Bengal, on Sunday (Mar 10) announced the names of all 42 candidates from the state for the upcoming Lok Sabha&nbsp;(Lower House of the Indian Parliament) polls.

Among noteworthy candidates, Mahua Moitra will fight from Krishnanagar, former cricketer Yusuf Pathan from Berhampore,&nbsp;Saayoni Ghosh from Jadavpur,&nbsp;Gopal Lamba from Darjeeling,&nbsp;Abhishek Banerjee from Diamond Harbour, and actor Shatrughan Sinha from Asansol.

The announcement came&nbsp;following a lot of political maneuvering and shifting allegiances ahead of the general elections expected to be held in the country in April-May.&nbsp;

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the TMC had secured 22 seats, a decrease from its previous count in 2014. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of the NDA alliance had made significant gains, capturing 18 seats. While&nbsp;the Congress at the time only managed to secure two seats.

As West Bengal&nbsp;gears&nbsp;up for the elections with 42 parliamentary constituencies in the state, TMC attempted a seat-sharing agreement with the Congress as part of the Opposition's INDIA bloc, but failed.

As recently as Sunday (Mar 10), the West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee declared that there would be no seat adjustments with Congress in the state.

This is yet another statement by the state CM after her January comments where she affirmed the TMC's decision to contest alone in West Bengal after failed negotiations with the Congress. "Whatever proposal I gave them, they have refused all," she had stated while adding, "Since then, we have decided to go alone in Bengal."

The negotiations seemingly failed after TMC's stance on seat-sharing remained firm. The party had offered only two seats to the Congress based on electoral performance criteria, which&nbsp;was rejected by the grand old party.

Media reports citing sources have said that the candidate list to be announced by the TMC may feature familiar names. This could include current MPs, while also introducing some fresh faces.&nbsp;In a surprising move, the TMC might also announce candidate names&nbsp;for Assam, Meghalaya, and Uttar Pradesh.

<h2>'Jana Garjan Sabha' rally&nbsp;</h2>

The announcement coincided with the 'Jana Garjan Sabha' rally. The rally led by the state CM drew a massive crowd of supporters.&nbsp; 
 
“We are organising a rally at Brigade Parade Grounds after a long time. It is going to be a historic event. Our party supremo Mamata Banerjee will give a message which we will take to every nook and corner of West Bengal and ensure the defeat of the BJP in all the 42 Lok Sabha seats of the state,” PTI news agency reported earlier while quoting TMC leader Firhad Hakim.

Sandeshkhali has witnessed unrest for months now after several women accused a local TMC leader who was arrested after being on the run for several weeks, on February 29. Shahjahan and his aides have been accused of systemic gang-rape and sexual exploitation of women in the Sandeshkhali area of the district.

Shahjahan, after his arrest, was suspended by the TMC for around six years. “Whatever happened in Sandeshkhali is a matter of shame. The TMC government is trying to protect the person responsible for this,” said the Indian PM.&nbsp;

He added, “However, they have received a setback from the high court as well as the Supreme Court…The storm of Sandeshkhali will reach every part of West Bengal.”&nbsp;

The high court had asked the Crime Investigation Department (CID) to hand over Shahjahan on Tuesday, but the cops had refused saying that the Mamata Banerjee government had challenged the&nbsp;order in the Supreme Court.&nbsp;

The Calcutta HC, on Wednesday again ordered the TMC government in West Bengal, to hand over Shahjahan’s case to CBI.&nbsp;

This came a day after the court had directed the police to transfer custody of Shahjahan, as well as case materials, by 4:30 (local time). However, three hours later the CBI left empty-handed from the police headquarters in Kolkata, on Tuesday (Mar 5).&nbsp;

On Wednesday morning, West Bengal government counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi again appealed before the Supreme Court after his appeal on Tuesday was swiftly rejected by the apex court.&nbsp;

The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday (Mar 5) ordered the transfer of the investigation into an attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials at Sandeshkhali in West Bengal on January 5 from the state police to India's premier probe agency - Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).&nbsp;

The Calcutta HC also asked for the custody of the accused Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Shajahan Sheikh to be handed over to the central agency. He was arrested by the West Bengal police on February 29 in connection with the attack.&nbsp;

In response to the order, the West Bengal government moved the Supreme Court&nbsp;with senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi mentioning the plea before India's top court but&nbsp;its appeal for immediate hearing was turned down. SC asked him to mention it before the registrar general of the top court.&nbsp;

A day after the high court ordered the arrest of Sheikh, the TMC leader was arrested. He is also the prime accused in alleged sexual atrocities on women and land grabbing at Sandeshkhali.&nbsp; 
 
The High Court bench led by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam&nbsp;transferred the case to the central agency.

The HC's order came after both ED and the West Bengal government moved separate appeals challenging a single bench order.&nbsp;

On January 17, it was ordered to form a joint special investigation team (SIT) of the CBI and the state police to probe the mob attack on the ED officials.&nbsp;

West Bengal wanted the investigation to be given to the state police only, but the ED asked the probe to be transferred to the CBI.&nbsp;

Trinamool Congress leader Derek O'Brien on Friday (Feb 23) stated that there has been "no change" in the party's stance of running for all 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal, a few in Assam, and one in Meghalaya.

"A few weeks ago, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee stated that TMC is fighting all the 42 seats in Bengal. We are also in the fray in a few seats in Assam and the Tura Lok Sabha seat in Meghalaya. There is no change in this position," he said, hinting at the party's unwillingness to ally with its INDIA bloc partner Congress.

This came amid rumours that the Congress is close to finalizing its seat-sharing arrangements with the party.

The Congress and the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC, which are also a part of the opposition bloc INDIA, reportedly reopened negotiations to challenge the BJP-led NDA together in the Lok Sabha elections that are scheduled to take place in April-May 2024.

<h2>Congress says discussion underway</h2>

Congress MP, reacting to Derek's comments which hinted toward a no-alliance, said that the discussions with the party were underway and that despite heated discussions, Congress respects Mamata Banerjee.

“Discussions are underway. Our doors are always open for TMC. Mamata Banerjee and TMC have said that they want to strengthen the INDIA Alliance and the biggest motive is to defeat the BJP,” Ramesh told news agency ANI.

“Heated discussions keep taking place between the two parties but we respect Mamata Banerjee,” he added.

The Congress has finalized its seat-sharing agreements with the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh and the Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi, following some initial snags.

“The important thing is that an official announcement has been made for the alliance(in UP)...It took time to give it a final form...Today, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress are also making an official announcement about the alliance. It was being said again and again that Congress is lazy and not interested but I always said that it takes time,” Ramesh said.

Congress says discussion underway as Trinamool hints at no alliance

West Bengal police on Sunday (Feb 25) arrested six members of an ‘independent’ fact-finding committee in Bhojerhat while they were headed to visit the unrest-hit Sandeshkhali region to meet local residents.

Following the arrest, the fact-finding team called on the Governor and expressed their strong protest against the illegal arrest and intimidation.

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose asked for an immediate report from the Director General of Police (DGP).

The panel was led by Justice Narsimha Reddy, Former Chief Justice of Patna High Court with members Charu Bali Khanna, Bhavna Bajaj, OP Vyas, Rajpal Singh, Aparna Banerjee and Bandana Biswas.

After being detained the members of the committee were brought to PHQ Lal Bazaar Kolkata.

"We were requesting them to not cross from here, but they were trying to break the police barricade unlawfully. So, we had to arrest them under Preventive Sections," said Saikat Ghosh, Deputy Commissioner, Bhangar Division, Kolkata Police.

"If there is information of a 'breach of peace', police can arrest them under preventive sections," he added.

The members of the fact-finding committee were halted by the police at Bhojerhat, South 24 Parganas, while they were on their way to the trouble-hit Sandeshkhali area in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas to probe the alleged incidents of atrocities on women.

Charu Wali Khanna, a member of the Fact-Finding Committee, expressing her dissatisfaction said, "We were visiting Sandeshkhali, but they have stopped us... Police have purposely stopped us and are creating problems for the common people. Police are not letting us meet the victims of Sandeshkhali..."

"We are sitting here obediently to oppose as they (police) have stopped us illegally, which is against our rights. We'll complain about it to the Chief Minister, Governor, Union Home Minister, and even to the Prime Minister," said another member of the Fact-Finding Committee, OP Vyas.

He further lashed out at the state government saying, "Unfortunately, police are executing illegal orders and taking the law into their own hands. We want to meet victims of Sandeshkhali."

Earlier, West Bengal Irrigation Minister Partha Bhowmick after an interaction with locals of Sandeshkhali said that not even a single woman raised the issue of assault.

West Bengal Opposition leader and state BJP President Sukanta Majumdar, while responding to Bhowmick's statement said, "The TMC has been in denial mode since the beginning... But later, the police of the TMC government recorded the statement of two women under section 164 in front of the magistrate. Why was the action under 164 was carried out if there was no rape?"

He further hit out at the state government, saying, "Either Partha Bhowmik is lying or Mamata Banerjee and her police are lying... The case should be given to national investigation agencies otherwise the police will suppress the matter..."
