Russian President Vladimir Putin has reportedly suspended his top military commander even as other military generals are being sacked or arrested over the alleged “failed” war against Ukraine.

More than two months have passed since Putin launched a military assault against his neighbour Ukraine in a bid to overthrow the Volodymyr Zelensky regime.

The Russian leader claims that he wants to rid the Ukrainian people of the “Nazi regime”.

Despite commanding one of the world’s largest troops, Moscow has so far failed to seize the capital Kyiv as the battle drags on.

And the resultant fallout has been the axing of top Russian military commanders.

Oleksiy Arestovych, a veteran of military intelligence and one of President Zelensky's inner circle, on Wednesday claimed that General Valery Gerasimov – the chief of staff of the Russian army - has been suspended, the Daily Mail reported.

Arestovych, speaking to dissident Russian lawyer and politician Mark Feygin on YouTube, said, “According to preliminary information, Gerasimov has been de-facto suspended. They are deciding whether to give him time to fix things, or not.”

He added, “The commander of the first tank army of the western military district Lieutenant General Sergei Kisel has also been arrested and fired after the first tank army was defeated near&nbsp;Kharkiv.”

Though there is no official confirmation of the sacking, speculation about the purge of senior military commanders increased after Gen Gerasimov was nowhere to be seen on Russia’s Victory Day on May 9 – the anniversary commemorating Russia’s defeat of the Nazis in 1945.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have been deploying their troops for offensive and counter-offensive in different cities including Kyiv, Mariupol, Kherson and others since the Russian troops marched into Ukrainian territory on February 24.

Russia successfully occupied Ukrainian regions in a battle that has been going on for months now.

Notably, Luhansk and&nbsp;Donetsk were the regions in Ukraine that were already occupied by Russia before February 24.

Nearly entire cities of Kherson and Mariupol are now under Russia’s control, as per reports.

Interestingly, Ukrainian soldiers are fighting Russian troops in the Azovstal Steelworks – the last area in Mariupol under Ukraine’s control.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian soldiers recaptured a few villages near Kharkiv region recently. Ukrainian forces have also regained control of some regions in the North.

Several fighters and civilians have been trapped in deep bunkers inside the Soviet-era steel mill under heavy bombardment from the Russian army.

They have been hiding in the tunnels crisscrossing the site with inadequate basic necessities as the mill has emerged as a symbol of resistance to the Russian effort to capture swathes of eastern and southern Ukraine in the 10-week-old war.

UK deploys 8,000 troops to Europe to deter 'Russian aggression'

A UN food agency official said on Friday that about 25 million tonnes of grains are stuck in Ukraine and unable to leave owing to infrastructure problems and blocked Black Sea ports, including Mariupol.

Ukraine invasion: Russian President Vladimir Putin to give 'doomsday' warning to West

Fedir Shandor has become a sort of an internet celebrity ever since his photo of giving lessons online while being deployed on the battlefield went viral.

Like many civilians, Shandor joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine at the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion that began on February 24.

Before that, he used to run a tourism company and teach at a university in western Uzhhorod city of Ukraine.

But all that changed when Russia’s Vladimir Putin started attacking its neighbouring country in a bid to overthrow the Volodymyr Zelensky regime.

However, as a professor, he hasn’t stopped giving lectures even in the trenches. He made an arrangement with his commanding officers and comrades to have a suitable duty roster to be able to hold lectures with his students.

The photo that had become was taken by fellow soldier Viktor Shchaedi. It purportedly shows the professor in army fatigues instructing students via video chat from inside a trench protected by sandbags, according to the New York Post.

The man can be seen with his helmet on and an AK-103 rifle at his side&nbsp;as he holds his phone in a bandaged hand.

“We are fighting for an educated nation.&nbsp;If I did not give lectures, it would be a sin,” Shandor said in a statement issued by Uzhhorod National University, where he teaches classes in tourism and hospitality.

“If there are sounds of shelling somewhere in the background, they do not affect the lecture,” Shandor said in the university statement.

It has been 70 days since he enlisted into the army and hasn’t missed a single class since then.

During that time, he said, he’s held classes at 8 am every Monday and Tuesday.

“I did not miss a single one,” he said.

“I always prefer morning classes: I read, and then you have time for another job,” he added.

Notably, Russia’s foreign minister last week had warned that the risk of war could escalate into nuclear tensions if US and other allied nations intervene.

In an interview with Russian TV, Sergey Lavrov said NATO nations were "pouring oil on the fire" and risking "World War III" by providing weapons to Ukraine.

He said the ongoing arms shipments to Ukraine meant NATO was "in essence engaged in war with Russia" already.

The minister’s warning&nbsp;was&nbsp;in response to US and EU nations pledging military support during a special meet at the US Ramstein Air Base in western Germany on April 26.

Germany's defence chief last week Tuesday announced that the country would start sending self-propelled armoured anti-aircraft guns to Ukraine.

Russia assures it won’t use nuclear weapons in ongoing war against Ukraine

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that Russia's invasion of his country has destroyed hundreds of hospitals and other medical institutions, leaving doctors without cancer medications or the ability to do surgery.

Many locations in eastern and southern Ukraine, where the main battlegrounds are, lack even basic antibiotics, according to Zelensky.

"If you consider just medical infrastructure, as of today Russian troops have destroyed or damaged nearly 400 healthcare institutions: hospitals, maternity wards, outpatient clinics," Zelenskiy said in a video address to a medical charity group on Thursday.

He described the condition in Russian-occupied areas as "catastrophic."

On March 9, a maternity facility in the besieged port city of Mariupol was almost completely destroyed in one of the most highly condemned atrocities of the conflict. Russia claimed that the attack was orchestrated and that armed Ukrainian organisations had exploited the facility.

The Kremlin claims it exclusively attacks military or strategic targets, not civilians. Ukraine accuses Russia of war crimes and cites civilian casualties from Russian artillery and fighting on a regular basis. The charges are denied by Russia.

According to the Kyiv School of Economics, Russian aggression costs Ukraine $4.5 billion&nbsp;per week, as bombs destroy thousands of buildings, public infrastructure, and kilometres of road.

Since Vladimir Putin launched the assault in February, the total cost of direct infrastructure damage has risen to $92 billion.

Earlier too, the country had launched fundraising efforts. In March the country launched an "Aid for Ukraine" website on which donors could contribute in 10 cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin and ether.

The Russia invasion of Ukraine entered its third month,&nbsp;and a senior United States official has claimed that the Russian forces are now looking to annex the Donetsk and Luhansk regions in Ukraine.

The Luhansk region is already under attack and governor Serhiy Haidai confirmed that Russian forces have started shelling parts of the cities which are still under Ukrainian control, according to AFP.

On the other hand, Russia calls the western media's coverage of the conflict biased. As per the Kremlin, the Western media narrative ignores the ex-soviet country's concerns about NATO expansion and the alleged persecution of Russian speaking people in Ukraine.

This war is not the first time Russia has been accused of participating in a disinformation campaign. Earlier in 2016, the US accused Moscow of meddling in the presidential election.

Britain says Russia using 'troll farms' to spread disinformation about the Ukraine conflict

Ukraine's foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba on Sunday (May 1) asked China to provide security guarantees against Russia.

In a lengthy interview, he told Xinhua news agency that "Ukraine is currently studying the possibility of acquiring security guarantees from permanent members of the UN Security Council, including China, and other major powers."&nbsp;

"We propose that China becomes one of the guarantors of Ukraine's security, this is a sign of our respect and trust in the People's Republic of China," Kuleba was quoted as saying by Chinese state media.

In reference to a similar United Nations security resolution on non-nuclear states, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman last month suggested that such "security assurances have clear limitations on the content and are triggered under specific conditions."

The ties between China and Russia have warmed since Chinese President Xi Jinping took power in 2013 with trade between the two countries rising to $146.9 billion last year.

However, defence experts that their interests can conflict despite sharing resentment of Washington as Putin is uneasy about the growing Chinese economic presence in Central Asia and Russia’s Far East.
