A new chapter in history: Pope Francis to be buried outside Vatican

Mourners gathered at St. Peter’s Basilica on Saturday to say a final farewell to Pope Francis, a pontiff remembered during his funeral as a tireless champion of the poor and migrants.
The funeral Mass was held on the steps of the Basilica, one of the holiest sites of the Catholic Church, with over 50 world leaders and 11 reigning monarchs attending. Among those present were US President Donald Trump, former President Joe Biden, Argentine President Javier Milei, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also attended and held a private meeting with Trump before the service.

A crowd of more than 250,000 gathered in St. Peter’s Square to witness the ceremony, with another 150,000 lining the 6-kilometre route through Rome as the pope’s coffin made its way to his final resting place. Millions more around the world watched the first Latin American pope’s funeral on television.

A humble farewell for a pope among the people

Pope Francis’ simple coffin was carried back into the basilica following the nearly two-hour service, where he was praised as a "pope among the people." From there, it was taken in procession across the River Tiber to the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore for burial, passing the ancient Colosseum along the way.
The pope had passed away at the age of 88 after suffering a stroke on Easter Monday, just a day after he appeared in St. Peter’s Square.
During the days leading up to the funeral, around 400,000 mourners visited St. Peter’s Basilica to pay their final respects as his body lay in state. On Friday night, his coffin was officially sealed in a ceremony led by Cardinal Camerlengo Kevin Farrell.

A life dedicated to peace, the poor, and the marginalised

The funeral Mass opened with the Latin chant, "Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him."
In his homily, Italian Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re praised Pope Francis’ tireless efforts for refugees and the poor. "His gestures and exhortations in favour of refugees and displaced persons are countless," he said. "His insistence on working on behalf of the poor was constant."
Cardinal Re also recalled how Pope Francis constantly called for peace amidst "raging wars, with their inhumane horrors," urging honest negotiations and reconciliation. One of Francis’ key messages, the cardinal reminded mourners, was, "Build bridges, not walls."
Prayers were offered in several languages, including French, Arabic, Portuguese, Polish, German, and Mandarin, fitting for a pope who aimed to reach Catholics worldwide.
Communion was first shared among cardinals and then among the crowd.

A funeral shaped by Francis’ wishes

Pope Francis had personally approved the order of the day in June 2024. Wanting a simpler ceremony, Vatican officials said he wished the funeral to reflect the life of "a pastor and disciple of Christ, and not of a powerful person in this world."
Francis' commitment to the poor was again evident, with homeless people, migrants, and even a group of transgender women living in a Roman convent invited to attend. These guests were chosen by the Sant’Egidio charity, known for its work with marginalised communities.
At his request, a group of poor and needy individuals also stood on the steps of the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore to pay their respects before his burial. He believed, the Vatican said, that "the poor have a privileged place in the heart of God."
Pope Francis is the first pope in over three centuries to be buried at Santa Maria Maggiore, and the burial took place privately, away from the public gaze.

A legacy of reform, and controversy

Francis leaves behind a legacy of firsts: the first Latin American pope, the first Jesuit to hold the office, and the first modern-day pope from outside Europe.
Elected in 2013, he led a series of progressive reforms, including promoting greater roles for women in the Church. Yet his time in office was not without its challenges. Although he took notable steps to address clerical sexual abuse scandals, critics argue that much more remains to be done.
Francis also faced criticism from conservative parts of the Church, particularly over his more open stance on same-sex relationships. Famously asked about homosexuality, he responded, "Who am I to judge?" though he maintained the Church’s traditional teachings.
Earlier this year, Francis rebuked the Trump administration’s immigration policies and criticised Vice President JD Vance’s use of religious arguments to justify them. Vance had been among the last visitors to meet Pope Francis, briefly speaking with him on Easter Sunday.
Now, the cardinals must gather for a conclave to choose his successor.

'Document recording his life & more': What's in Pope's casket - List of items to be buried with Pope in Rome

Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State, died at the age of 88 on Monday (Apr 21). The pontiff spent about five weeks in hospital battling pneumonia for five weeks, where he nearly lost his life two times, before he was discharged on March 23 following improvement in health.

Doctors considered ending Pope’s treatment

According to a Reuters report, Pope Francis came so close to death one time during his fight against illness that his doctors considered ending treatment so he could die in peace.
Francis, who had part of one lung removed as a young man, suffered two “very critical moments during his hospital stay in which his life was in danger.
“There was a real risk he might not make it,” said Sergio Alfieri, a physician at Rome's Gemelli hospital.

According to the Vatican, Pope Francis almost choked on his own vomit after he suffered a breathing “crisis” on February 28. On March 3, the pontiff experienced “two episodes of acute respiratory failure”, which was the third health crisis he suffered during his stay in the hospital. Both times, Pope Francis’ health improved.
“We had to choose if we would stop there and let him go, or to go forward and push it with all the drugs and therapies possible, running the highest risk of damaging his other organs,” Alfieri told Italy's Corriere della Sera in an interview.
“In the end, we took this path,” he said.

Pope returned to the Vatican on March 23 after facing the most serious health crisis of his 12-year papacy.

Pope’s long hospital stay

Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State, died at the age of 88 on Monday (Apr 21). The pontiff spent about five weeks in hospital battling pneumonia for five weeks, where he nearly lost his life two times, before he was discharged on March 23 following improvement in health. Doctors considered ending Pope’s treatment According to a Reuters report, Pope Francis came so close to death one time during his fight against illness that his doctors considered ending treatment so he could die in peace. Francis, who had part of one lung removed as a young man, suffered two “very critical moments during his hospital stay in which his life was in danger. “There was a real risk he might not make it,” said Sergio Alfieri, a physician at Rome's Gemelli hospital. Who was Pope Francis? Beloved pontiff passes away at 88

Vatican's first Latin American pontiff, Pope Francis, died at 88. An announcement from the Vatican numbed the Christian community across the globe. Many of his followers had gathered to pray for the pontiff while his health was not in great shape and he was being treated in the hospital.
An announcement by Cardinal Kevin Farrell read: "Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favour of the poorest and most marginalised. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God."

Pope Francis' 12-year-long papacy was filled with reforms and global outreach, and with that came some controversies.

Sex scandal:

Vatican's former ambassador had demanded that the Pope step down in 2018. This came as he was disappointed with the way the pontiff handled the sexual misconduct that involved priests. He was accused of opposing reforms to curb clerical sexual abuse of children and vulnerable adults. This is also when nuns were forced to undergo abortion after an assault.
In the case of Chilean Bishop Juan Barros, the Pope was accused of covering up paedophilia accusations and following cases. His stance highlighted the contradictions. He was initially seen defending Barros, but later it was reversed after thorough investigations.

Views on LGBTQIA+ rights:

His papacy led to opposition for his views on the LGBTQIA+ community and rights and the debate on priestly celibacy. Pope Francis also faced resistance from conservatives for his view on the role of women in the church.
His statements were sometimes seen as oscillating; the Pope once said, “If a person is gay and seeks the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?“ This showed his liberal mindset. But then, on another occasion, he said, "There is too much homosexuality in the Vatican."
Laurent Stefanini, a homosexual French diplomat, was not granted permission to enter the Vatican’s Holy See. His stance was ambiguous, as it confused many, for it lacked consistency. He approved of blessings for homosexual people but then refrained from sanctioning same-sex marriages within the church.

Pope Francis makes first public appearance in five weeks as he leaves hospital

Pope Francis will make his first public appearance on Sunday with a blessing and a wave from Rome's Gemelli hospital where he was admitted on February 14 with breathing problems.
The 88-year-old pontiff has been battling pneumonia in both lungs after being hospitalised.
"Pope Francis intends to wave and offer a blessing from the Agostino Gemelli hospital in Rome after Angelus prayers," The Vatican said Saturday.
The pope has missed the Angelus prayers for five straight weeks for the first time since his election in March 2013.

The Angelus prayers are normally recited by the pope at midday (1100 GMT) every Sunday.
The pope has made public appearances from the Gemelli hospital earlier -- on July 11, 2021 he recited the Angelus prayer from his balcony on the 10th floor of the hospital following colon surgery.
The current hospitalisation is the longest in Francis's papacy and has raised questions over who might lead the busy schedule of religious events leading up to Easter, the holiest period in the Christian calendar.

The Vatican's press office on Wednesday said that no definite decisions had been taken yet in that regard.
The Vatican also said Wednesday that Francis had suspended the use of an oxygen mask, adding that his clinical condition was "improving".
For most of the pope's hospital stay, including critical stages, the Vatican was publishing daily bulletins on the health of Francis, who had part of one lung removed as a young man.
Despite Francis's improvement, speculation abounds that he could step down due to his fragility, following in the footsteps of his predecessor, Benedict XVI.

On Monday, Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin told reporters that he had noted an improvement in Francis' health during a visit.
But asked whether the conversation had turned to the pope's resignation, he replied: "No, no, no, absolutely not."
Catholics and others worldwide have been praying for his speedy recovery. Many have been leaving flowers, candles and notes for Francis outside the Gemelli hospital.
