Pope Francis was breathing on his own despite his pneumonia, a Vatican source said Wednesday, amid growing concerns over the hospitalised 88-year-old's condition.
The pontiff was admitted to a Rome hospital with bronchitis last week after suffering breathing difficulties, but the Holy See revealed on Tuesday that he had developed pneumonia in both of his lungs.
The pneumonia is the latest of a series of health issues for the Jesuit, who has undergone hernia and colon surgery since 2021 and uses a wheelchair due to pain in his knee.

"The follow-up chest CT scan which the Holy Father underwent this afternoon... demonstrated the onset of bilateral pneumonia, which required additional drug therapy," it added.

Bronchiectasis is when the bronchi, or air passages, thicken due to infection or another condition.
The pontiff had part of his right lung cut away when he was 21, after developing pleurisy that almost killed him.
The Vatican has cancelled a papal audience on Saturday and said the pope would not attend a mass on Sunday, although it has yet to announce plans for his weekly Angelus prayer, which is held on Sunday at midday.

The 51-year-old Koovakad is related to the Syro-Malabar Catholic Archdiocese of Changanacherry, and after getting elevated as a cardinal, he will become the sixth Keralite to hold the post.

The Pope is elected by the Cardinals. On Saturday (December 7), Koovakad will become one of the 21 cardinals who have been elevated to the position from across the world.

Koovakad, who is based in the Vatican currently, has been given the responsibility to organise the international travel schedule of Pope Francis.&nbsp;

In 2006, international travel schedule of Pope Francis joined the Vatican Diplomatic Service after he completed his formation at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy.

Koovakad, who was born on August 11, 1973, in the state capital city, turned a priest on July 24, 2004.&nbsp;

A week after the ceremony, the Vatican said it "deplored the offence" caused to Christians by the ceremony that featured drag queens and transgenders who posed like Jesus and his Twelve Apostles from the famous painting.

"The Holy See was saddened by certain scenes at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games and cannot but join the voices raised in recent days to deplore the offence done to many Christians and believers of other religions," read the statement issued in French.&nbsp;

“At a prestigious event where the whole world comes together to share common values, there should be no ridiculous allusions to religion,” it added.

While criticism poured from across the globe, Thomas Jolly, the artistic director of the Paris Olympics opening ceremony defended the production by calling it a symbol of 'inclusion'. According to Jolly, the ceremony did not mock the Christian painting, albeit celebrated the&nbsp;Greek god of wine Dionysus.

“Our subject was not to be subversive. We never wanted to be subversive. We wanted to talk about diversity. Diversity means being together,” Jolly said.

“We wanted to include everyone, as simple as that. In France, we have freedom of creation, artistic freedom. We are lucky in France to live in a free country. I didn’t have any specific messages that I wanted to deliver," said Jolly.&nbsp;

"In France, we are a republic, we have the right to love whom we want, we have the right not to be worshippers, we have a lot of rights in France, and this is what I wanted to convey," he added.&nbsp;

"We believe this ambition was achieved. If people have taken any offence we are really sorry."
