Leylah Fernandez may not feel the weight of expectation as she heads into the U.S. Open final but the Canadian teenager will have a chip on her shoulder put there by those who doubted her. 
 
Dropped from Tennis Quebec`s development program when she was seven-years-old and told by teachers to forget becoming a professional and focus on school, Fernandez will have the last laugh on Saturday when faces fellow teen Emma Raducanu for a first Grand Slam title and a winner`s purse of $2.5 million. 
 
"A lot of people doubted me, my family and my dreams," said Fernandez after knocking out second seed Aryna Sabalenka 7-6(3) 4-6 6-4. 
 
"They kept saying `No`, that I`m not going to be a professional tennis player, that I should stop and just pursue going to school. 
 
"I remember one teacher, which was actually very funny -- at the time it wasn`t, but now I`m laughing. 
 
"She told me to stop playing tennis, you will never make it, and just focus on school." 
 
Fernandez says she carries that rejection with her into every match and uses it as motivation, along with the other challenges her family faced along the road to helping her realise her dream. 
 
Her father Jorge, an Ecuador-born soccer player who knew little about tennis, stepped in and became her coach, instilling in her an unshakable self-belief. 
 
Ranked number 73 in the world at the start of the U.S. Open, most would have seen her bid to reach a Grand Slam final as `Mission Impossible`, but not Fernandez. 
 
"My dad would tell me all the time, there`s no limit to my potential to what I can do," said Fernandez, who celebrated her 19th birthday on Monday. "Every day we just got to keep working hard, we got to keep going for it. 
 
"Nothing is impossible. There`s no limit to what I can do." 
 
The difficult times and determination to overcome are reflected in the fearless Canadian`s relentless attacking play. 
 
Fernandez has also drawn strength and resolve from her mother and sister, who have been cheering her on from courtside seats while her father offered advice and inspiration from home. 
 
"My mom had to go to California for a few years to support my family and I in the tennis world," said Fernandez. 
 
"That few years were definitely hard for me because I needed a mom, I needed someone to be there for me through the age of 10-to-13. 
 
"I`d barely see her at that time. 
 
"Every time I saw her, it was like seeing a stranger but at the same time someone so familiar. 
 
"I was just very lucky to have my mom here at this tournament cheering for me and having fun with me all this time. 
 
"But we`ve gone through so many things together as a family."

Fernandez uses doubters as motivation to reach US Open final

Alexander Zverev pledged to bounce back from his bitterly disappointing loss in the final of the US Open on Sunday to capture a Grand Slam one day.

The 23-year-old German went two sets and a break up in his first Grand Slam final before losing in five sets to Austria's Dominic Thiem.

"I was super close to being a Grand Slam champion. I was a few games away, maybe a few points away," a dejected Zverev told reporters.

"For me what upset me the most is not the third set, it's the fifth set," when he was serving for the championship at 5-3.

"I had a lot of chances in the fifth set and didn't use them," he added.

The second seeded Thiem beat the fifth seed Zverev 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (8/6) in 4hr 2min.

It was the first time in the US Open's Open era history that a player had recovered from losing the opening two sets to win the title.

It was also the first time the final had been settled by a tie-break.

Zverev said it hurt to lose in the manner he did.

"Obviously being two sets to love and a break up in a Grand Slam final then losing is not easy," he told reporters.

Zverev's debut appearance in the last-two of a tennis major came after he reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open earlier this year.

Zverev said the rawness of the Flushing Meadows defeat meant it was too soon to say whether he had taken any positives from going a step further.

"That question is probably two, three days too early to ask right now," he said.

But the German, who came into the tournament ranked seventh in the world, added that he was sure he would capture a tennis major in the future.

Mate Pavic of Croatia and Brazilian veteran Bruno Soares won the US Open men's doubles final in straight sets on Thursday.

The unseeded pair defeated eighth seeds Croatian Nikola Mektic and the Netherlands' Wesley Koolhof 7-5, 6-3, in 1 hr 31 min inside Arthur Ashe Stadium.

It marked a third Grand Slam men's doubles title for the 38-year-old Soares and a second at Flushing Meadows after his victory with Britain's Jamie Murray in 2016.

"It means a lot," said Soares. "I'm extremely happy. It's been a tough year for everyone.

"I'm really glad for the work that everyone put into this event to give us the opportunity to get back on the court.

"It's a very positive way to come back for us - happy days. Hopefully we get back to normal soon but very grateful for everything," he added.

For the 27-year-old Pavic, it is a second Grand Slam men's doubles title after victory at the Australian Open in 2018.

"We had tough matches," said Pavic.

"We were a break down serving for the match after the opening set of the second round," he added, referring to their hard-fought 6-7, 7-6 (7/5), 6-4 victory over Americans Jack Sock and Jackson Withrow.

The breakthrough in the deciding set came game when Osaka broke Brady's serve in a fourth game that included a lucky net cord point for the Japanese.

Osaka then held her own to go 4-1 in front with the help of another net cord point.

Brady refused to go quietly though, forcing Osaka to hold twice to ensure the win and a second US Open final in three years.

"I kind of consider New York my second home. I really love the atmosphere," Osaka said.

"Even though sadly there's no people here, I really feel like this court really suits me well," she added.

Osaka has now won her last ten matches.

"I just felt like I wanted to come out of quarantine being positive and not really caring if I win or lose," she said.

Serena Williams battled into the quarter-finals of the US Open on Monday as top men's seeds Dominic Thiem and Daniil Medvedev sailed through to the last eight at Flushing Meadows.

After Williams kept her bid for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam singles title alive, second seed Sofia Kenin was sent crashing out in the last 16 by Belgium's Elise Mertens.

Williams had to summon up every last ounce of strength to depose 15th seed Maria Sakkari in three hard-fought sets.

The 38-year-old American needed almost two and a half hours to dislodge her 25-year-old Greek opponent 6-3, 6-7 (6/8), 6-3 inside an empty Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.

"She's such a good competitor. It was a really intense match," said Williams, who had been dumped out of a US Open tuneup tournament by the same opponent last month.

"I felt like she almost played better today. I was a little fatigued last time and had some cramps. Just felt like I was able to compete longer," Williams added.

There was little separating the players throughout the energy-sapping contest, with Williams notching 107 total points to Sakkari's 99.

Williams won 72 percent of points off her first serve while Sakkari won 73 percent. Sakkari also outdid Williams on aces, by 13 to 12.

Williams rallied from two games down in the deciding set, pumping herself up with loud screams that echoed around the spectator-free arena as she broke Sakkari twice to clinch the last-eight spot.&nbsp;

"I'm super passionate. This is my job. This is what I wake up to do. This is what I train to do 365 days of the year," Williams said afterwards.

The American will play Tsvetana Pironkova for a place in the semi-finals after the Bulgarian ousted France's Alize Cornet in another draining three-setter.

Pironkova, playing her first tournament in three years after a lengthy break in which she gave birth to her son, prevailed 6-4, 6-7 (5/7), 6-3 at the Louis Armstrong Stadium.

"It's absolutely unreal, I really can't believe it," said Pironkova, whose last tournament appearance before this year's US Open was the 2017 Wimbledon championships when she exited in the second round.

Mertens ousted Kenin, this year's Australian Open champion, 6-3, 6-3 in 1hr 14 mins to set up a last-eight tie with former world number one Victoria Azarenka.

The Belarusian overcame 20th seed Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 in 2hr 30min at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

In the men's draw, second-seeded Thiem raced into the round of eight with a three-set demolition of Canadian rising star Felix Auger-Aliassime.&nbsp;

Thiem dismantled the 20-year-old 15th seed 7-6 (7/4), 6-1, 6-1 in 2hr 7min.

"I played a great match today, the best one from my whole America trip," said Thiem.

He will play Australia's 21st seed Alex de Minaur for a spot in the semi-finals after the Australian breezed past unseeded Canadian Vasek Pospisil 7-6 (8/6), 6-3, 6-2, in 2hr 17 min.

Third seed Medvedev blew away unseeded American France Tiafoe 6-4, 6-1, 6-0 in only 1hr 38 min.

"I'm pleased with the fact that I've won all of these sets and didn't have to stay long on the court. That's always good when you're playing a Grand Slam," said the Russian.

Medvedev will face compatriot Andrey Rublev for a spot in the last four after the 10th seed ousted Italy's sixth seed Matteo Berrettini 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3.

Novak Djokovic on Sunday saw him get defaulted from the US Open 2020 as he declared himself “extremely sorry” for the moment of madness which saw him get disqualified from the showpiece grand slam.&nbsp;

Djokovic took to social media platform Instagram, hours after his mind-boggling exit in New York as the Serbian ace said he had been left “really sad and empty” by the controversy.&nbsp;

The 33-year-old was kicked-out from the tournament after ‘unintentionally’ hitting a tennis ball into the throat of a line official during his fourth round of match with Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta.&nbsp;

"This whole situation has left me really sad and empty," Djokovic said in a statement on Instagram. "I checked on the lines person and the tournament told me that thank God she is feeling ok.&nbsp;

Coco Gauff's hopes of launching another deep run at a Grand Slam ended in the first round at the US Open on Monday, with the US teenager succumbing in three sets to Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova.

Tennis’s most famous siblings were due to play each other in the semi-finals at Indian Wells in 2001 but Venus pulled out minutes before the match, citing injury.
