"They (immigration officials) don't tell you anything. A family member can die and they don't tell you he's dead,"&nbsp;said Vinagly.&nbsp;<br />

In a separate statement to Reuters, the&nbsp;Venezuelan national said that her husband&nbsp;was in a holding cell inside the facility when the fire started and survived by dousing himself in water and pressing against a door.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The incident took place in a facility located at Stanton-Lerdo Bridge, which links Mexico and the US. In recent weeks, the Mexican city&nbsp;of Ciudad Juárez has witnessed an influx of people. The fire is also said to be&nbsp;one of the deadliest to hit the country in years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Video from the scene shows guards quickly walking away after the migrants set mattresses on fire.&nbsp;Two people dressed as guards can be seen rushing into the camera frame, and one migrant appears by the metal gate on the other side. But the guards don't make any effort to open the cell doors, the video shows. They can instead be seen running away as billowing clouds of smoke filled the structure within seconds.</p>

<p>Adán Augusto López, Mexico’s interior secretary, confirmed to local journalist Joaquín López Doriga that the video is authentic.&nbsp;Mexico President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said the migrants started the fire after learning they would be deported.<br />

<p>Speaking about the new change in immigration rules, Biden on Thursday said that the country's immigration system is "broken" and added that the new plan would be "safe and humane" to decrease the crowd of immigrants at the US-Mexico border.</p>

<p>"It's safe and it's humane, and it works," said Biden in his address from the White House.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He added that previously comprehensive legislation was sent by him to Congress to overhaul "what has been a broken immigration system for a long time."</p>

<p>"But Congressional Republicans have refused to consider my comprehensive plan," he added, as he blamed "extreme Republicans" for the impasse.</p>

<p><strong>What happened in the recent ruling?</strong></p>

<p>As mentioned earlier, the SCOTUS upheld the policy Title 42, as it is called, by Chief Justice John Roberts. This comes after the incumbent US President Joe Biden’s administration had appealed to end the pandemic-era restriction. The case will be argued in February 2023, meanwhile, the restriction will remain in place at least until a decision is made potentially&nbsp;by the end of June.&nbsp;</p>

Furthermore, the apex court’s decision also said that they will hear oral arguments on the issue of whether states have the right to intervene in the upcoming legal battle for Title 42.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The White House issued a&nbsp;statement on Saturday&nbsp;saying&nbsp;the United States President Joe Biden has accepted the resignation of the country’s Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner, Christopher Magnus. This comes a day after Magnus had spoken to the media about an official from the president’s administration allegedly asking him to resign or be fired.</p>

<p>Magnus claimed&nbsp;that he had been asked to step down or be fired from the role, by Homeland Security Secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas, who is also a Biden administration cabinet member who oversees the CBP, said a report by Reuters citing media reports. However, Magnus was adamant about not resigning, due to his commitment to the agency, the report added.</p>

<p>Magnus was confirmed by the US Senate last year at a time when the agency was dealing with arresting a record number of people at the border as well as amid the Covid-19 travel restrictions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Vanessa Pineda, who is a lawyer for the ACLU of Arizona, told the BBC that no proper explanation has been given on how a turban could pose a security threat, raising cross-border security concerns.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a series of tweets on Saturday, Trump took aim at Democratic Representative Elijah Cummings -- a high-profile critic of Trump's administration whose district covers much of the majority-black city of Baltimore, Maryland.</p>

<p>"Cumming (sic) District is a disgusting, rat and rodent-infested mess," the president wrote, calling it "the worst run and most dangerous anywhere in the United States."</p>

<p>"No human being would want to live there," he said, in an attack ostensibly provoked by Cummings' criticism of the harsh conditions facing would-be asylum seekers at the US-Mexico border.</p>

<p>Trump's comments triggered a torrent of criticism and he defended them on Sunday in another burst of tweets.</p>

<p>"There is nothing wrong with bringing out the very obvious fact that Congressman Elijah Cummings has done a very poor job for his district and the City of Baltimore," Trump said, without adding anything to back up his argument.</p>

<p>"Just take a look, the facts speak far louder than words! The Democrats always play the Race Card, when in fact they have done so little for our Nation's great African American people," Trump wrote.</p>

<p>"Now, the lowest unemployment in US&nbsp;history, and only getting better. Elijah Cummings has failed badly!"</p>

<p>Saturday's diatribe ignited a storm of criticism less than two weeks after the House of Representatives condemned Trump for "racist" comments targeting four first-term Democratic congresswomen who are from ethnic minorities.</p>

<p>The top Democrat in Congress, Nancy Pelosi, on Saturday accused Trump of a "racist" attack on a "champion... of civil rights and economic justice, a beloved leader in Baltimore, and deeply valued colleague."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We all reject racist attacks against him," wrote Pelosi -- who was born in Baltimore and whose father served as mayor of the city.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Former vice president Joe Biden -- the Democratic frontrunner to challenge Trump in 2020 -- called out the president directly on Twitter.</p>

<p>"It is despicable for you to attack him and the people of Baltimore this way," Biden wrote. "Once again you have proved yourself unfit to hold the office. A President is supposed to lift this nation up. Not tear it down."</p>

<p>In another tweet on Sunday, Trump said Pelosi is doing a bad job representing her district in California.</p>

<p>"Speaking of failing badly, has anyone seen what is happening to Nancy Pelosi's district in San Francisco. It is not even recognisable lately. Something must be done before it is too late," he wrote.</p>
