Satirical remarks by presidents

It was former president Bush in 1989 to offer a presidential pardon to a turkey after animal rights groups were picketing outside the White House during the presentation of the bird and he quipped, “Let me assure you, and this fine tom turkey, that he will not end up on anyone's dinner table, not this guy...he’s granted a Presidential pardon as of right now.”&nbsp;

This year as Biden granted clemency to the two turkeys and&nbsp;said that he would keep his remarks short “Nobody likes it when their turkey gets cold”. This was also followed by a shot at the Republican Party and election deniers, “The votes are in. They’ve been counted and verified. There’s no ballot stuffing. There’s no foul play,” he said, referring to the process of how the two turkeys are selected by an online poll.&nbsp;

He added, “The only red wave this season is going to be if German Shepard Commander knocks over the cranberry sauce on our table,” in the context of a “red wave” which was expected by the GOP in the midterm elections.&nbsp;

Last year, Biden pardoned Peanut Butter and Jelly when the number of COVID-19 cases in the country increased&nbsp;during the holidays. “Peanut Butter and Jelly were selected based on their temperament, appearance and, I suspect, vaccination status…instead of getting basted, these two turkeys are getting boosted,” president Biden had said last year.&nbsp;

Where do the turkeys go after being pardoned?&nbsp;

Over the years the turkeys have been sent to universities, farms and even parades. In 2022, for example, Chocolate and Chip were sent off to&nbsp;retirement at the&nbsp;North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina following their appearance at the White House. While previously the birds were sent to Virginia Tech’s Gobblers Rest exhibit in Blacksburg and during the Bush and Obama administrations the turkeys even spent a day at Disneyland to greet the park goers.&nbsp;

A Federal Aviation Administration representative stated that the collision occurred on Monday (Nov 21) when the US military C-37 plane took off from Chicago Midway International Airport when it collided with the flock.&nbsp;

Shortly after takeoff, when the plane crashed with a flock of birds in the air, video captured a spark emerging from the left engine. Aircrew members exited the plane as soon as it landed.&nbsp;

Back at the airport, the staff and aircrew members thought a malfunction to be the reason. Later, a massive bird carcass was discovered on the runway. The decision to return to the airport was taken "out of an abundance of caution," a US Air Force official said.&nbsp;

Director James Cameron has made a shocking revelation in connection to the budget of his upcoming sequel of "Avatar" -- "Avatar: The Way of Water." There have been many reports that has talked about the budget of the movie and gave out wild predictions however now the director himself has dropped a bomb in his recent interview. “Avatar: The Way of Water” is set to open in theaters on December 16.&nbsp;

Variety said that earlier reports claimed that the production budget alone was in the $250 million range. However, now the director has risen the curtain from over the clouds and made an astonishing submission over the budget of his latest movie sequel. Though the director refrained from revealing any numbers to the public but his response in queries has made clear that the movie production cost is TOO MUCH. While speaking with GQ magazine about sequel's budget, the director said “Very f***** [expensive].”

Moreover, the director Cameron in a conversation told Disney and 20th Century Studios executives that his sequel budget was so high that it represented “the worst business case in movie history.” Over the budget he said that the movie has to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history to earn any profits. According to the current chart of highest-grossing movies worldwide, Cameron’s original 2009 “Avatar” ranks at the top with $2.9 billion. Director James Cameron has made a shocking revelation in connection to the budget of his upcoming sequel of "Avatar" -- "Avatar: The Way of Water." There have been many reports that has talked about the budget of the movie and gave out wild predictions however now the director himself has dropped a bomb in his recent interview. “Avatar: The Way of Water” is set to open in theaters on December 16. Variety said that earlier reports claimed that the production budget alone was in the $250 million range. However, now the director has risen the curtain from over the clouds and made an astonishing submission over the budget of his latest movie sequel. Though the director refrained from revealing any numbers to the public but his response in queries has made clear that the movie production cost is TOO MUCH. While speaking with GQ magazine about sequel's budget, the director said “Very f***** [expensive].” Moreover, the director Cameron in a conversation told Disney and 20th Century Studios executives that his sequel budget was so high that it represented “the worst business case in movie history.” Over the budget he said that the movie has to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history to earn any profits. "That’s your threshold. That’s your break even,” he said, as per Variety. According to the current chart of highest-grossing movies worldwide, Cameron’s original 2009 “Avatar” ranks at the top with $2.9 billion. Furthermore, Disney’s “Avengers: Endgame” stands at second position with $2.7 million. Cameron’s “Titanic” has grabbed the third rank with $2.1 billion. Cameron in a groundbreaking confession said if “Avatar: The Way of Water” wants to break even the movie will have to overtake either “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($2.07 billion) or “Avengers: Infinity War” ($2.05 billion) in the fourth or fifth slots, respectively, reported Variety. It is pertinent to note that only five movies that have ever gotten out of the $2 billion mark across the globe and pulled off a stunning success. COVID pandemic has slowed down the pace of cinema but the mood is now again uplifted as the world continues to open up. However, despite the COVID restrictions and lockdowns, the pandemic saw some movies thriving. Movies like “Spider-Man: No Way Home” earned $1.9 billion and “Top Gun: Maverick” made $1.4 billion and registered huge profits. The original “Avatar” grossed $785 million domestically. The movies holds number four slot on the all-time US box office chart. The fifth slot is with “Top Gun: Maverick” with $716 million domestic.

While the 38-member country organisation is not predicting a global recession for the upcoming year,&nbsp;the energy crisis may&nbsp;trigger a sharp downturn. “It is true we are not predicting a global recession…but this a very, very challenging outlook”, said the OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann during a press conference. This is reflected in the&nbsp;recent forecast by the organisation&nbsp;which estimates that the international economy would expand only&nbsp;2.2 per cent in 2023.

A statement by the OECD has attributed this slowdown to aspects like, “Persistent inflation, high energy prices, weak real household income growth, falling confidence and tighter financial conditions are all expected to curtail growth.”&nbsp;

According to Cormann, an end to the conflict in Ukraine is the best way to improve the global economic outlook. This comes after the statement said, considering the “fragile prospects” for the global economy are a direct result of the Russian invasion of Kyiv which in turn led to the energy crisis and soaring inflation that most countries are witnessing currently. &nbsp;

Meanwhile, economies like the 19 countries in the eurozone that are worst affected by the conflict are projected to grow by 3.3 per cent this year and might worsen in FY 2023-24 with an estimated growth of 0.5 per cent. Meanwhile, the United States may grow by 1.8 per cent this year and is also expected to grow by 0.5 per cent next year.&nbsp;

The OECD also expects inflation in advanced economies to remain above nine per cent and estimated that it might go down to 6.6 per cent in 2023. Speaking about the European and American economies Cormann told the reporters that they are growing partly due to the government’s increased spending on energy subsidies as well as policies aimed at boosting investment.&nbsp;

The inflation has also become persistent and broad-based, said the 38-member nation organisation. Additionally, it also warned that the US Federal Reserve’s constant increase in interest rates to tame the soaring inflation in the country could bring Washington's economy to a near-halt.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, China is projected to grow just 3.3 per cent in 2022 and 4.6 per cent next year.&nbsp;

The deal was once described as a win by Biden while the railroads had called it the most generous contract in modern history.&nbsp;

The largest freight rail union, SMART Transportation Division, representing at least 28,000 conductors, rejected the contract by a narrow margin as 50.8 per cent of workers voted against it. Meanwhile, the second-largest rail union, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen in the country which consists of mostly engineers voted in favour of the deal creating a split among the top rail unions.&nbsp;

Reports suggest that a strike like this could paralyse the nation’s rail traffic impacting not only the economy but also the people. According to the Association of American Railroads, a potential strike could cost the US’ economic output at least two billion dollars each day. Meanwhile, the Retail Industry Leaders Association said that such a strike could result in an “enormous disruption” to the flow of goods across the country.&nbsp;

The proposal in question offers an immediate 14 per cent raise along with back pay dating to 2020 and five-year deals which feature 24 per cent raises as well as a $5000 bonus. Once the deal is ratified it could give the union members an average salary of $11,000 per worker.&nbsp;

While this deal does allow them to miss work to attend to medical issues, there are some limitations to this provision as well as that time off is unpaid. However, they did praise the deal which lets the union negotiate some regularity in schedules for round-the-clock jobs like engineers and conductors and called it a big win. &nbsp;

There is no immediate threat of strikes despite the rejection of the deal by four unions which account for nearly 60,000 workers who are now returning to the negotiation table. Meanwhile, the union has reportedly set the new strike date as December 5. While they have agreed to negotiate new deals based on the original framework of the President Biden administration's brokered deal there is not much time left given the deadline. &nbsp;
