Meanwhile, Washington reportedly accused Beijing of imposing “illegal unilateral retaliatory measures” on US exports. This comes as Washington had lodged an appeal against several WTO rulings which included China, Turkiye, Norway, and Switzerland after it was found that US metal tariffs breached global rules.

“These troubling behaviours of the US have clearly depicted an image of the U.S. as a unilateral bully, a rule breaker, and a supply chain disruptor,” said China's ambassador to the WTO, Li Chenggang, while addressing a meeting on trade disputes, according to a copy of his speech procured by Reuters. Notably, several important rulings against the US have been made at the WTO in recent weeks.&nbsp;

In addition to the metals ruling with China, Washington has also engaged in a dispute with Hong Kong over labelling which the US has since appealed and criticised both rulings. In reference to this, Li said, “China would have hoped that the US would show due self-restraint not to appeal every unfavourable panel report into the void, which the US itself has created.”&nbsp;

Republican Texas Representative Troy Nehls has introduced a bill that would ban the transfer of federal funds to China until the communist country reimburses the United States for the $4.6 trillion it spent on COVID-19 assistance.

On Thursday, Nehls introduced China Lied, People Died Act, which would make China reimburse the billions of dollars that were spent using money that were granted by Congress to combat the COVID-19 epidemic that began in Wuhan.

According to the former sheriff, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is singlehandedly accountable for the millions of people who have died from COVID-19. The House GOP majority will attempt to have China repay the $4.6 trillion in US coronavirus relief funds, among other things.

Holding China responsible is his top priority this Congress, Nehls said in a statement to Fox News Digital. "The Chinese Communist Party is singlehandedly responsible for the loss of a million lives in the United States and causing one of the worst economic disasters in the history of our country."

The China Lied, People Died Act is only one example of Nehls' tough position on the CCP. Earlier last month, the House passed a resolution holding China accountable for the COVID-19 epidemic and demanding that Beijing pay the U.S. $16 trillion for economic losses to Americans.

Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado, a Republican, co-sponsored the measure with Nehls. The House GOP majority is already prepared to look into the causes of the COVID-19 outbreak when Nehls' bill is introduced.

What makes the SCORPION unit so controversial?

Recently, the unit has garnered significant criticism, particularly after the Nichols case which has also raised concerns that the SCORPION has strayed from its core mission of targeting more serious crimes. “They were in unmarked cars, why are they conducting traffic stops?” said Antonio Romanucci, one of the lawyers for Nichols’ case to CBS.&nbsp;

In the wake of Nichols’ death, Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn Davis who was also the first black woman to serve in that role for the city has since called for a review of all of the police department’s specialized units including the SCORPION unit and described the incident as “heinous, reckless and inhumane,” reported Reuters.

Several reports citing criminal justice reform activists and some residents of the city said that the officers who are a part of the SCORPION unit had previously been accused of using excessive force. A report by BBC citing local media said a man named Cornell McKinney who is also from the city, had a tense encounter with the unit on January 3 where he alleged that the officers in the unmarked vehicle accused him of carrying drugs and threatened to “blow his head off” while pointing a weapon at his head. Subsequently, he filed a complaint at the Memphis Police Department but did not receive any response.&nbsp;

“He said he was confronted by this unit and he was brutalized, and he had pictures of his injuries…And so, it was foreseeable that something tragic like this was going to happen,” said Crump, as per ABC news. The Memphis Police Department has not responded to these allegations.&nbsp;

Ji had been accused of supplying intelligence with biographical information on about eight people, who were naturalised American citizens originally from China or Taiwan; some of them even worked as US defence contractors.&nbsp;

In 2016, the Chinese national enlisted in the US Army Reserves under the programme which recruits foreign nations and lied on his application that he has not been in contact with a foreign government within the past seven years said the officials in Washington. Ji was arrested in 2018 after several interactions with a US law enforcement agent posing as a representative of China’s Ministry of State Security (MSS).

Japan&nbsp;and the Netherlands will soon agree to join the United States in restricting exports of semiconductor manufacturing equipment to China, Bloomberg News reported.&nbsp;Talks between the countries will conclude as early as Friday, with the Netherlands restricting ASML Holding NV from selling machines to China used to make certain types of advanced chips, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

Japan&nbsp;would impose similar restrictions on Nikon Corp, the report said.

Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Seiji Kihara, a government spokesperson, said&nbsp;Japan&nbsp;would make "appropriate steps" based on the United States' and other nations' regulatory moves. He declined to comment further when asked about the report at a Friday afternoon media briefing.

The Dutch foreign ministry declined comment. Prime Minister Mark Rutte, who has said he expects to reach agreement with the United States and other allies on stricter controls but that the Netherlands will not simply adopt U.S. rules, will take questions at his weekly news briefing later on Friday.

Sources have told Reuters that a deal between Dutch and U.S. officials could be clinched by the end of the month as representatives from the two countries meet in Washington on Friday.

Getting the Netherlands and&nbsp;Japan&nbsp;to impose tighter export controls on China would be a major diplomatic win for U.S. President Joe Biden's administration, which in October announced sweeping restrictions on Beijing's access to U.S. chipmaking technology to slow its technological and military advances.

Without&nbsp;Japanese or Dutch cooperation, U.S. companies would face a competitive disadvantage.

"We have been in discussion with the United States and other countries regarding the export-control regime," Yasutoshi Nishimura,&nbsp;Japan's Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, told reporters on Friday.

"We will implement any measures in accordance with our Foreign Exchange Law and through international cooperation," he added, declining to provide further details.

While Nikon could be affected, the&nbsp;Japanese company most likely to be affected by new restrictions will be chip manufacturing machinery maker Tokyo Electron, which relies on China for about a quarter of its sales, said Masahiko Hosokawa, a Meisei University professor and former director general of trade control at the ministry.

"A balance needs to be struck so no one among&nbsp;Japan, the United States and Europe will be disproportionately disadvantaged. It's about fairness," he said.

Dutch officials have insisted that fresh controls address national security concerns rather than favour U.S. chip-related companies, a source familiar with the discussions told Reuters.

Japan&nbsp;expects sales at affected chip-related companies to rebound quickly because the market for their equipment is expanding, a trade and industry official involved in overseeing semiconductor firms told Reuters. He asked not to be identified because he is not authorised to speak to the media.

Five sacked&nbsp;Memphis police officers were charged with second-degree murder and other crimes on Thursday (January 26) in connection with the&nbsp;arrest and death of Tyre Nichols, a Black motorist who died on January 10, 2023,&nbsp;three days after an altercation with Memphis police officers during a traffic check.&nbsp;

Online records from the Shelby County Sheriff's Office reveal that the Black police officers Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Desmond Mills, Jr., Emmitt Martin III, and Justin Smith were all in custody. The five former officers&nbsp;are each facing charges of second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct, and official oppression.

Smith, Bean, or Haley's attorneys are not listed in court documents. William Massey, Martin's attorney, acknowledged that his client had surrendered. He said that he and Mills' attorney, Blake Ballin, intended to discuss the accusations in a news conference later on Thursday (January 26).

Second-degree murder is punishable by 15 to 60 years behind bars&nbsp;under Tennessee law.

Nichols’ stepfather, Rodney Wells, who spoke to The Associated Press over the phone said that he and his wife RowVaughn Wells, who is Nichols’ mother, discussed the second-degree murder charges at length and are “fine with it.”&nbsp;

“There’s other charges, so I’m all right with that,” he said.

Attorneys for the family Ben Crump and Antonio Romanucci released a statement praising the charges.

“The news today from Memphis officials that these five officers are being held criminally accountable for their deadly and brutal actions gives us hope as we continue to push for justice for Tyre,” they wrote. “This young man lost his life in a particularly disgusting manner that points to the desperate need for change and reform to ensure this violence stops occurring during low-threat procedures, like in this case, a traffic stop.”
