The Iranian government has claimed that the facility sustained “minor damages” and there were no casualties, however, the extent of the damage caused cannot be independently verified, while details remain scarce. The attack is said to have occurred around 11:30 pm, Saturday, as per authorities in Tehran. The footage of the incident released by the Iranian state media shows a flash in the sky and the arrival of emergency vehicles at the scene.&nbsp;

What has Iran said about the attack?

The Iranian defence ministry has claimed that they foiled an “unsuccessful attack” which took place late Saturday and involved three drones and there were no casualties. The ministry said, one of the drones was destroyed while the other two were caught using “defence traps and blew up”. It added, “It caused only minor damage to the roof of a workshop building”, as per a report by Iranian state TV.&nbsp;

The ministry also said that the attack was conducted using “micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs)”. However, the state-run IRNA news agency later described the drones as “quadcopters equipped with bomblets,” which gets its name from the four rotors and are typically operated from short ranges by remote control.&nbsp;

Additionally, a report by Reuters citing a military official in the region said given the location of the strike as well as the size of the drone it is likely that it was staged from within Iranian borders. Subsequently, in a press conference, the country’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian with his Qatari counterpart, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, who is visiting Tehran called the attack “cowardly” and aimed at creating “insecurity” in the country.&nbsp;

While the Iranian defence ministry has not commented on who might have carried out the attack, a report by the state-run media quoting comments by a lawmaker, Hossein Mirzaie, said there was a “strong speculation” Israel was behind it. However, reports suggest that it comprises a large air base built for its fleet of US-made F-14 fighter jets and is also home to the country’s nuclear fuel research and production centre. During the aforementioned press conference when asked if the incident would affect the country’s nuclear programme, the foreign minister said, “Such moves can’t impact our nuclear scientists’ will and intentions to achieve peaceful nuclear energy,” as per Al Jazeera.&nbsp;

In a separate incident, on early Sunday, the IRNA reported that a fire broke out at a motor oil factory near the industrial zone in the northwestern city of Tabriz which the officials later said was caused by an oil leak and no further details were given.&nbsp;

What the US officials have allegedly said

Pentagon spokesperson Brigadier General Patrick Ryder said no US military forces played a role in the strikes in Iran and declined to comment further, reported Reuters. However, a US official speaking on the condition of anonymity to the news agency said it appears that Israel is involved. Additionally, first reported by the Wall Street Journal citing multiple anonymous sources from officials in Washington also reported that Tel Aviv might have been involved in Saturday’s attack.&nbsp;

Why does this matter?

If the reports are confirmed this will be the first attack carried out under Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu since he returned to office in December between the two long-time foes. Furthermore, Tehran has previously accused Israel of planning attacks using agents inside Iranian territory. Last year Iran claims that they arrested a sabotage team of Kurdish militants which had allegedly been working with Israel to blow up a “sensitive” defence industry centre in Isfahan.

However, Saturday’s attack in Isfahan comes as the region is witnessing a rise in tensions over Iran's nuclear programme as well as its alleged supply of arms to Russia amid its conflict with Ukraine.&nbsp;

Kyiv has accused Iran of supplying hundreds of drones to Moscow which have reportedly been used to target Ukrainian cities but not on the frontlines, reported Reuters citing a senior aide to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/three-explosions-reported-from-kyiv-following-drone-attack-says-mayor-542893">Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky</a> linked to the incident. “Explosive night in Iran…Did warn you,” said Mykhailo Podolyak on Twitter following the attack in Iran. Data lab | Gauging police brutality in the US, in charts

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) released its World Economic Outlook update on Monday (January 30), in which they said global growth is set to be higher than expected this year. This has largely been attributed to strong consumption and increased investment. The forecasted growth for 2023 is 0.2 percentage points higher than predicted in its previous outlook released in October 2022.&nbsp;

What does the report say about the global outlook?

According to the report, global growth is projected to fall from an estimated 3.4 per cent in 2022 to 2.9 per cent in 2023, then rise to 3.1 per cent the year after. Furthermore, it predicts a decline in global inflation from 8.8 per cent in 2022 to 6.6 per cent in 2023 and 4.3 per cent in 2024 but it remains at least 3.5 per cent above the pre-pandemic level between 2017 and 2019. This has largely been attributed to the fact that “adverse risks” have been “moderated” since the last report in October.&nbsp;

The Washington-based lender has also noted how Russia’s war in Ukraine, as well as the central banks across different countries increasing their interest rates in a bid to combat inflation, continue to weigh on economic activity. However, China re-opening after the rapid spread of COVID-19 in the country, last year,&nbsp;has also paved the way for a “faster-than-expected recovery” and accelerating vaccination rates in the country would safeguard this recovery, said the IMF report. It added, “severe health outcomes in China could “hold back” this progress.&nbsp;

Another factor that could affect global growth is an escalation in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and tighter global financing costs which could worsen debt distress, as per the report. While the news of adverse inflation could suddenly re-price financial markets and further “geopolitical fragmentation” could hamper economic progress.&nbsp;

The report also mentioned reasons like stronger-than-expected consumption and investment in the third quarter of 2022 as well as a robust labour market and strong consumer balance sheets for an overall rise in predicted growth. “The year ahead will still be challenging...but it could well represent a turning point with growth bottoming out and inflation declining,” said the IMF chief economist, Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, while addressing a press conference, as per AFP.&nbsp;

The IMF chief economist also said that the risk of the world facing a recession has been subdued and that central banks are making progress on controlling inflation.

India retains its ‘bright spot’ status

The global projections for India have remained unchanged since the last outlook report by the IMF which predicted a 6.8 per cent growth for this current fiscal year until March, said Gourinchas. He added, “we're expecting some slowdown to 6.1 per cent in fiscal year 2023. And that is largely driven by external factors”. The report also noted this aspect but said that India may continue with, “resilient domestic demand despite external headwinds.”&nbsp;

However, the expected rise in growth may be short-lived as it might fall back to 4.4 per cent, as per the report. The Washington-based fund agency has attributed this possible decline to “business dynamism and slow progress on structural reforms.” According to Gourinchas, while the reopening of China could put some pressure on commodity prices, the IMF largely views the ease in restrictions as to “benefit to the global economy”. He added that it will help ease production bottlenecks which have worsened inflation recently and by the creation of demand from Chinese households.&nbsp;

The US, UK and eurozone

In its recently updated outlook, the IMF also predicted that US GDP will grow by 1.4 per cent from one per cent, as mentioned in its previous report, which could be due to stronger-than-expected consumption and investment in the third quarter of 2022. Meanwhile, the eurozone, which is a group of 20 countries in the European Union that use euros as its primary currency, may also see some growth in their GDP which has increased from 0.5 per cent in last year’s report to 0.7 per cent in the updated version.&nbsp;

However, things are not looking good for the United Kingdom which was one of the only major advanced economies Group of Seven that the IMF predicted to be in recession in 2023 as well as a sharp downgrade in growth this year. According to the recent report, Britain might see a decline of 0.6 per cent in GDP as households continue to struggle with the cost of living crisis.&nbsp;

According to the IMF, the UK has particularly suffered after the rise in fuel prices following the Russian invasion of Ukraine due to its heavy reliance on gas for power generation. This also came as the country faced mass walkouts over wage disputes and working conditions from virtually every sector in the country, which led to a shortage of workers and further slowed down the economy.&nbsp;

Subsequently, in a bid to control inflation the Bank of England announced interest rate hikes. The IMF chief economist believes that this is because of all these factors which have “lead to a fairly sharp retrenchment of activity in 2023”. He added this comes after the UK was expected to account for one of the highest growth rates in 2022 among European countries at 4.1 per cent, as per Reuters.&nbsp;

Outlook for ASEAN countries&nbsp;

The group of ten member countries in Southeast Asia, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, are set to witness downgrades to their 2023 growth outlooks. This has been attributed to the global economic slowdown which has outweighed the benefits and positive impact of China’s reopening after COVID-19.&nbsp;

This prompted the IMF to reduce Singapore’s GDP outlook for 2023 from 2.3 per cent in the previous forecast to 1.5 per cent in the updated one, said Gourinchas, as per Reuters. Additionally, the overall growth predictions for ASEAN-5 (group of five countries, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand), were reduced to 4.3 per cent from 4.5 per cent.&nbsp;

The forecasted growth for 2023 is 0.2 percentage points higher than predicted in its previous outlook released in October 2022. What does the report say about the global outlook? According to the report, global growth is projected to fall from an estimated 3.4 per cent in 2022 to 2.9 per cent in 2023, then rise to 3.1 per cent the year after. Furthermore, it predicts a decline in global inflation from 8.8 per cent in 2022 to 6.6 per cent in 2023 and 4.3 per cent in 2024 but it remains at least 3.5 per cent above the pre-pandemic level between 2017 and 2019. This has largely been attributed to the fact that “adverse risks” have been “moderated” since the last report in October. The Washington-based lender has also noted how Russia’s war in Ukraine, as well as the central banks across different countries increasing their interest rates in a bid to combat inflation, continue to weigh on economic activity. However, China re-opening after the rapid spread of COVID-19 in the country, last year, has also paved the way for a “faster-than-expected recovery” and accelerating vaccination rates in the country would safeguard this recovery, said the IMF report. Police released aerial and bodycam video of officers working with the Georgia State Patrol to pull the suspect from the vehicle just seconds before the train struck the patrol car.

Atlanta police lauded the officers involved in&nbsp;saving the suspect’s life&nbsp;and said that the incident shows that "no traffic stop is routine."

"We are proud of the efforts of the units on the ground as well as in the air, as they all worked to safely conclude an incident that could have ended in death or seriously bodily harm," the department said.

The driver was accused of theft by taking, evading arrest, driving recklessly, disrupting traffic, and causing damage to public property, according to the Atlanta Police Department.

The police chief in the United States’ city of Memphis announced, on Saturday (January 28) that they will “permanently deactivate” the SCORPION unit. The decision comes a day after the release of the body camera footage of Tyre Nichols being assaulted after a traffic check on January 7, Nichols died later and his death sparked widespread protests across several cities in the country. All the five now-former police officers involved in Nichols’ arrest and assault&nbsp;and charged with his murder were part of the Memphis policing unit called SCORPION.

The SCORPION unit which stands for “Street Crimes Operation to Restore Peace in Our Neighborhoods” was created in October 2021 after an uptick in violent crime in the city in the state of Tennessee. However, the has come under scrutiny and was severely criticised after it was first reported that its officers were involved in the alleged killing of the 29-year-old who was kicked, punched in the face and head, and assaulted with a baton as seen in the recently released footage. &nbsp;

In the wake of Nichols’ death, Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn Davis who had earlier called for a review of all the specialised units, including the SCORPION, has&nbsp;disbanded the controversial unit citing a “cloud of dishonour”. In a statement posted on Twitter, the Memphis police said it was “in the best interest of all to permanently deactivate” the unit.&nbsp;

It added, “The officers currently assigned to the unit agree unreservedly with this next step. The police chief in the United States’ city of Memphis announced, on Saturday (January 28) that they will “permanently deactivate” the SCORPION unit. The decision comes a day after the release of the body camera footage of Tyre Nichols being assaulted after a traffic check on January 7, Nichols died later and his death sparked widespread protests across several cities in the country.

The SCORPION unit which stands for “Street Crimes Operation to Restore Peace in Our Neighborhoods” was created in October 2021 after an uptick in violent crime in the city in the state of Tennessee. However, the has come under scrutiny and was severely criticised after it was first reported that its officers were involved in the alleged killing of the 29-year-old who was kicked, punched in the face and head, and assaulted with a baton as seen in the recently released footage. In a statement posted on Twitter, the Memphis police said it was “in the best interest of all to permanently deactivate” the unit. It added, “The officers currently assigned to the unit agree unreservedly with this next step. While the heinous actions of a few cast a cloud of dishonour on the title SCORPION, it is imperative that we, the Memphis Police Department take proactive steps in the healing process for all impacted.” The development comes after Davis was previously adamant about retaining the unit and she had said in an interview with the Associated Press that she would not shut down a unit if a few officers commit “some egregious act”. After the shocking death of Tyre Nichols, Memphis police disbanded unit of the five officers involved in the beating of the 29-year-old to death. Nichols died in the hospital on January 10, three days after being stopped and beaten by police on the suspicion of reckless driving.

Footage of the attack on Nancy Pelosi's husband, Paul Pelosi, was made public on Friday morning (January 27),&nbsp;following&nbsp;requests from news organisations to release the video.&nbsp;The footage shows what happened on October 28, 2022, when David DePape, 42, reportedly stormed into&nbsp;Pelosis' house in San Francisco, California, in an attempt to physically harm Nancy Pelosi&nbsp;who was not at home at the time.

Instead, DePape ran into 82-year-old Paul Pelosi and hit him with a hammer, causing Pelosi to sustain damage to his hands, arms, and skull in addition to other injuries. Pelosi managed to recover from his wounds, but since the incident, he has been spotted in public sporting a helmet and gloves.

Body-camera footage from the officers who originally arrived at the Pelosis' home is among the media that was made public on Friday. A portion of the video had previously been displayed in an open court preliminary hearing last month.

Judge Stephen M. Murphy of the San Francisco Superior Court decided to release the video on Wednesday over objections from the prosecution that it may be manipulated or used to disseminate false information.

After the attack, which occurred a little more than a week before the crucial 2022 midterm elections were set to take place, rumours began to circulate online.

There have been baseless allegations made by people like&nbsp;Elon Musk,&nbsp;that Paul Pelosi was somehow responsible for the attack, and there are several ideas circulating that DePape was either framed or had a sexual relationship with Pelosi, as reported by Al Jazeera.&nbsp;

The San Francisco District Attorney's Office refused to provide copies of the footage to news organisations, including the New York Times, Washington Post, San Francisco Chronicle, and Associated Press, citing the risk of false information.

However, attorneys for the news organisations contended that having access to the footage would be essential for case transparency.

“You don’t eliminate the public right of access just because of concerns about conspiracy theories,” Thomas R Burke, a San Francisco-based lawyer representing the news agencies, told the Associated Press.

DePape is accused of an attack on both a state and federal level. He is accused of attempted murder, residential burglary in the first degree, elder abuse, assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment, and threatening a family member of a public official in state court.

He faces two counts in federal court: one for the attempted kidnapping of a US official and one for assaulting a US official's immediate family member. DePape has filed not guilty pleas in both federal and state courts.
