<p>After a 20-year hiatus, Hamilton returned to the location in March and made his remarks.&nbsp;He said he was "struck by how those who are still detained today are experiencing the symptoms of accelerated ageing, worsened by the cumulative effects of their experiences and years spent in detention".</p>

<p>He demanded that prisoners be given access to proper mental and physical health care as well as more regular family visits.</p>

<p>The US&nbsp;Defense Department "is currently reviewing the report," a Pentagon spokesperson told Reuters.</p>

The transport ship carrying nearly 1,000 Australian prisoners of war and mostly soldiers, was unknowingly torpedoed by a United States submarine.</p>

<p>“The discovery of the Montevideo Maru closes a terrible chapter in Australian military and maritime history,” said John Mullen, director of the Silentworld Foundation, a maritime archaeology group. The ship was sunk on July 1, 1942, when it was en route to what is now Papua New Guinea to China’s Hainan off the coast of the Philippines.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Mullen added, “Families waited years for news of their missing loved ones, before learning of the tragic outcome of the sinking. Some never fully came to accept that their loved ones were among the victims.”</p>

<p>Notably, the location of the wreck had remained a mystery for over 80 years and was found at a depth of more than four kilometres, said the organisation. The foundation had spent at least five years planning the mission in collaboration with the Dutch deep-sea surveying company Fugro and the Australian Department of Defence.</p>

<p>The search went on for nearly 12 days and was conducted using an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) in the South China Sea. It was days later that the team detected a positive sighting using sonar at four kilometres which was a greater depth than the Titanic.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The sinking of the Japanese transport ship was one of the worst maritime disasters in Australia as the ship carrying over 1,000 passengers also comprised at least 979 Australian citizens including some 850 soldiers. Additionally, the ship was also carrying civilians from 13 other countries while the number of prisoners killed was about 1,060.</p>

<p>According to the foundation, the Montevideo Maru included 33 crew from the Norwegian freighter the Herstein and about 20 Japanese guards and crew who also lost their lives that day. They also believe that the ship was hit by two torpedoes as it had split into two sections, with the bow and stern lying about 500 metres apart on the seabed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After the discovery, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese took to Twitter and wrote, “At long last, the resting place of the lost souls of the Montevideo Maru has been found. Among the 1,060 prisoners on board were 850 Australian service members – their lives cut short.”</p>

<p>He added, “The extraordinary effort behind this discovery speaks for the enduring truth of Australia’s solemn national promise to always remember and honour those who served our country. We hope today’s news brings a measure of comfort to loved ones who have kept a long vigil.”<br />

<p>More than a hundred senior citizens broke two world records by&nbsp;taking part in a group skydiving event in California.&nbsp;The elderly skydivers, known as Skydivers Over Sixty, were successful in creating formations in the air, including a snowflake on their fourth attempt. Skydive Perris, a skydiving facility in Southern California, organised the event and shared images from the day on Instagram.</p>

<p>The team's first accomplishment was a 1-point 101-way on Saturday, April 15, 2023, breaking the old mark of a 75-way set in Chicago in 2018. The following day, the group tried to break the previous record for a 60-way set at Perris in 2017, by attempting a 2-point 95-way.</p>

<p>Skydive Perris expressed their gratitude for the participants in their Instagram post, stating, "Thank you everyone for helping make this dream a reality! You were all so amazing."</p>

<p>In a settlement with US authorities, Seagate Technology has agreed to pay a $300 million fine for selling hard disc drives worth more than $1.1 billion to China's Huawei in violation of US export control regulations, the Department of Commerce said on Wednesday.</p>

<p>In spite of a law that restricted sales of some foreign products created with US technology to the company in August 2020, Seagate (STX) supplied the drives to Huawei between August 2020 and September 2021. As a result of concerns about its national security and foreign relations, Huawei was included to the Entity List, a US trade blacklist, in 2019.</p>

<p>The penalty is the most recent in a series of steps taken by Washington to prevent China from acquiring advanced technology that could bolster its military, permit human rights infractions, or otherwise endanger US security.</p>

<p>After the 2020 rule went into effect, Seagate supplied Huawei with all of its hard drives and shipped 7.4 million drives to the company, according to the Commerce Department.</p>

<p>After the new rule went into force in 2020, the other two major hard drive providers stopped shipping to Huawei, according to the department. The other two, though they weren't named, were Western Digital (WDC) and Toshiba (TOSBF), according to a 2021 report on Seagate by the US Senate Commerce Committee.</p>

<p>Even after “its competitors had stopped selling to them … Seagate continued sending hard disk drives to Huawei,” Matthew Axelrod, assistant secretary for export enforcement at the Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security said in a statement. “Today’s action is the consequence.”</p>

<p>The administrative penalty, according to Axelrod, was the biggest in the organisation's history and was unrelated to a criminal investigation.&nbsp;Because they were not a direct byproduct of US machinery, Seagate maintained that its drives created abroad were exempt from US export control laws.</p>

<p>“While we believed we complied with all relevant export control laws at the time we made the hard disk drive sales at issue, we determined that … settling this matter was the best course of action,” Seagate CEO Dave Mosley said in a statement.</p>

<p>The government claimed in a ruling released on Wednesday that Seagate mistakenly thought the foreign product rule only required a review of the final step in the manufacturing process and not the full process.</p>

<p>The ruling stated that Seagate manufactured drives in China, Northern Ireland, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and the United States and used equipment, including testing equipment, that was subject to the regulation.</p>

After the 2020 rule went into effect, Seagate supplied Huawei with all of its hard drives and shipped 7.4 million drives to the company, according to the Commerce Department. After the new rule went into force in 2020, the other two major hard drive providers stopped shipping to Huawei, according to the department. <p>Rescue workers and Navy troops scoured the city in a desperate search while Kerry posted social media updates about her anguish.</p>

<p>Utility workers waved down police officers on Wednesday at around 7 p.m. when they were conducting a traffic stop close to the Waukegan Harbour, according to the police, reported the Daily Mail.</p>

<p>The ComEd workers reported what they thought to be a body in the water as they were performing normal maintenance close to the harbour.</p>

<p>The body was pulled onto the shore with assistance from the Waukegan Fire Department, and police chief Edgardo Navarro said it matched Gray's physical description.</p>

<p>According to WGN9, the body's clothing matched his description as well. It&nbsp;was later identified as being that of Gray by the Lake County coroner.&nbsp;</p>

<p>'Tomorrow I have to do what no mother should ever have to do. I have to go on a foot search with the Police Department, Fire Department and many others who will join in to find my son Séamus Grays body,' she wrote on March 23.</p>

<p>Analysts said the settlement was a rare example that there may be an enormous price for blatant disinformation — even for once-untouchable media giants. Fox News managed to wriggle out of what was anticipated to be a dramatic trial.</p>

<p>"This can be seen as a wake-up call for live broadcasters and a reminder that there really is a difference between false factual statements, and knowingly broadcasting such false information, and protected speech," Roy Gutterman, a Syracuse University professor, told AFP.</p>

<h2><strong>Why did Dominion sue Fox News?</strong></h2>

<p>In its $1.6 billion lawsuit against Fox News, Dominion claimed that the network had supported Donald Trump's baseless assertion that the company's voting equipment had been tampered with, to rig the 2020 election in Joe Biden's favour.</p>

<p>"The evidence will show that Dominion was a valuable, rapidly growing business that was executing on its plan to expand prior to the time that Fox began endorsing baseless lies about Dominion voting machines," said a Dominion spokesperson in a statement, as reported by NPR.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Following Fox's defamatory statements, Dominion's business suffered enormously, and its claim for compensatory damages is based on industry-standard valuation metrics and conservative methodologies. We look forward to proving this aspect of our case at trial," added the spokesperson.</p>

<p>The company claimed that because of baseless rumours that Dominion's voting machines altered votes for then-President Donald Trump to his opponent, Joe Biden, in the 2020 election, its staff and offices have endured years of fatal threats.</p>

<p>The US's activities in Africa and the Middle East have grown crucially dependent on Djibouti. US President Joe Biden ordered the pre-positioning of armed personnel to be prepared, according to White House spokesperson John Kirby.</p>

<p>Kirby also indicated he was carefully monitoring events in Sudan. Up until now, there are no signs that Americans are being&nbsp;targeted, Kirby said during a briefing. But he continued to maintain that it was a dangerous place right now and not safe.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He said, "The best thing that can happen is for the two sides to put down their weapons, uphold a ceasefire, and allow aid to reach the people in Khartoum."</p>

He said, "The best thing that can happen is for the two sides to put down their weapons, uphold a ceasefire, and allow aid to reach the people in Khartoum."
