Jeff Shell, the chief executive of NBCUniversal, will leave the US-based media company and entertainment giant after an investigation over “a complaint of inappropriate conduct” was launched against him.&nbsp;

The announcement was made on Sunday (April 23) by the parent company Comcast Corp after Shell acknowledged having had an inappropriate relationship with a woman in the company, the complaint for which has since prompted an investigation.&nbsp;

A Comcast statement said that the company and Jeff Shell have “mutually agreed” that he will leave “effective immediately”.&nbsp;

“I had an inappropriate relationship with a woman in the company, which I deeply regret. I'm truly sorry I let my Comcast and NBCUniversal colleagues down,” said Shell.

Shell had been a part of the company for nearly 20 years. The media giant has said that an outside counsel will lead the investigation into the complaint. However, the&nbsp;brief statement did not give any other details about it.&nbsp;

As of now, Comcast has not indicated who will replace Shell. For the time being, NBCUniversal’s senior executives will report directly to Comcast president Mike Cavanagh.

The now-former CEO once led content creation, programming and distribution for NBCUniversal Film and Entertainment. He took over as the chief executive of NBCUniversal in 2020, replacing Steve Burke.&nbsp;

Earlier in his career at Universal Films, Shell oversaw some of the biggest franchises such as Fast &amp; Furious and Jurassic World by Universal Studios. The parent company also comprises NBC, which is one of the biggest television networks in the US, business news channel CNBC and the prominent Hollywood film studio Universal Pictures.&nbsp;

Following Shell’s ouster, Cavanagh and Comcast chief executive Brian Roberts, in a company-wide email said, “We built this company on a culture of integrity. Nothing is more important than how we treat each other."

They added, “When our principles and policies are violated, we will always move quickly to take appropriate action, as we have done here.”&nbsp;

In a previous statement to employees, Roberts also said, “NBCUniversal is performing extremely well operationally and financially.”

Notably,&nbsp;Shell took over as the CEO&nbsp;during the pandemic when Covid-induced lockdowns had forced the closure of theme parks and cinemas while TV productions were halted.&nbsp;

This is not an incident at NBCUniversal. Its vice chairman Ron Meyer left the company back in 2020, after disclosing a settlement with a woman with whom he had a consensual affair years ago, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

As the conflict continues to rage in Khartoum between the Sudanese army and its paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF), countries across the world are scrambling to evacuate their citizens from the African nation.&nbsp;

The fighting, which suddenly began on April 15 and is now entering its eighth day, has since left thousands of foreign nations including aid workers and diplomats stranded in the conflict-hit country.&nbsp;

So far, over 420 people have been killed and thousands wounded as per the United Nations’ estimates, amid fears of wider turmoil and a humanitarian disaster.&nbsp;

Where are the evacuations taking place?

The warring sides, after several calls from other countries, have agreed to help foreign nationals leave Sudan by road, air and sea. While several efforts are being made by air, others appeared to be via Port Sudan on the Red Sea which is an 850-kilometre drive from Khartoum.&nbsp;

Here’s what we know about some of the evacuations:&nbsp;

Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia was the first country to successfully evacuate over 150 people, on Saturday, announcing their arrival in Jeddah. A statement from the foreign ministry said that the evacuation was carried out by the kingdom’s naval forces with assistance from other army units.&nbsp;

Among the over 150 people were 91 Saudi citizens and around 66 nationals from 12 other countries – Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Tunisia, Pakistan, India, Bulgaria, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Canada and Burkina Faso.&nbsp; 
 
Kuwait has reported that all citizens who wished to return home had arrived in Jeddah.

United States&nbsp;

The US military sent three Chinook helicopters&nbsp;which flew from a base in Djibouti with over 100 troops to evacuate&nbsp;the country’s embassy staff&nbsp;and their families from Khartoum.&nbsp;

The US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said they are suspending&nbsp;embassy operations in Sudan and will continue to assist Americans stuck as local staff remain to support it. Around thousands of Americans and dual nationals are thought to have remained in the country.&nbsp;

United Kingdom

In a statement on Sunday, UK PM Rishi Sunak said that the country’s armed forces have completed a “complex and rapid evacuation” of British diplomats and their families from Sudan “amid a significant escalation in violence and threats to embassy staff.”

Turkey&nbsp;

Turkey began its evacuation efforts at dawn on Sunday, taking at least some of its 600 nationals by road from two Khartoum districts. However, their plans from one site in the Sudanese capital were postponed after “explosions” near a mosque which was designated as an assembly point, said the embassy.&nbsp;

India&nbsp;

The Indian government is keeping a close eye on the current situation in Sudan. Two Indian Air Force C-130J transport planes are currently on standby in Jeddah while the navy’s INS Sumedha vessel has reached Port Sudan in case a civilian rescue operation is ordered, said the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in an update late Sunday.&nbsp;

It added, “Apart from the Sudanese authorities, the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy in Sudan are also in regular touch with the UN, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, and US among others.”&nbsp;

On Monday,&nbsp;External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said&nbsp;India has started 'Operation Kaveri' to bring back stranded citizens from Sudan.&nbsp;The government had said on Friday that it was focusing on the safety of over 3,000 Indian citizens presently located throughout Sudan.

China&nbsp; 
 
On Monday,&nbsp;Beijing's foreign ministry&nbsp;said&nbsp;China has "safely&nbsp;evacuated" the first group of its citizens from Sudan&nbsp;without giving a specific number. A day prior,&nbsp;senior foreign ministry official Wu Xi told state media, that Beijing will "try every means to protect the lives, properties and safety of 1,500 plus Chinese compatriots in Sudan." 
 
EU and member nations&nbsp;

European Union&nbsp;

The European Union has evacuated over 1,000&nbsp;citizens, said its foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, on Monday (April 24). He also thanked&nbsp;France, "especially for taking our people out". According to Borrell,&nbsp;21 diplomats from the EU's mission in Khartoum were taken out while&nbsp;the EU ambassador had moved outside the capital to elsewhere in Sudan.&nbsp;Notably, seven nations among the 27 member countries of the bloc have missions in Sudan.&nbsp;

France

France evacuated some 100 people after a “complicated” rescue operation, said French officials. The first plane with people of multiple nationalities left Khartoum on Sunday for Djibouti. Among those evacuated were also citizens of “European and allied partner” nations, said the French foreign ministry.&nbsp;

Germany

Germany started evacuating citizens&nbsp;from Sudan on Sunday "in coordination with our partners”, tweeted the defence and foreign ministries. They also aimed to fly as many German, EU and other nationals with them. 
 
So far, Germany&nbsp;managed to evacuate over 300&nbsp;people&nbsp;from Sudan, out of which the first batch of&nbsp;101&nbsp;landed in Berlin on&nbsp;Monday (April 24). Meanwhile, others were flown out of Khartoum in an air force plane, said the German military.&nbsp; 
 
Italy

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said Rome was planning to evacuate&nbsp;some 140 Italians and&nbsp;nationals&nbsp;from the EU, Switzerland, and personnel from the Vatican's embassy.&nbsp;Two Italian C-130s transport aircraft,&nbsp;as per plan,&nbsp;landed at Khartoum airport on Sunday, with personnel from the&nbsp;army and&nbsp;Carabinieri paramilitary special forces who will fly the evacuees from Sudan to the Italian military base in Djibouti.

On Sunday, the Spanish government said they have flown out 100 people (30 Spanish citizens and 70 others from Europe and Latin America)&nbsp;out of Sudan.&nbsp;Among the other nationalities evacuated were,&nbsp;Argentina, Colombia, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Poland, Mexico, and Venezuela, said a&nbsp;foreign ministry statement.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;Dutch defence ministry evacuated over 30 people from Sudan on Monday. Among 32&nbsp;evacuees on board were&nbsp;15 Dutch people while approximately&nbsp;60 Dutch people were flown out&nbsp;through a French evacuation operation. 
 
Sweden

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced&nbsp;that 25 Swedish embassy staff and their relatives have been evacuated from Sudan during the French-coordinated&nbsp;operation.&nbsp;

Other countries

Russia

The Russian ambassador to Sudan told Moscow’s state media that 140 out of roughly 300 citizens said they wanted to leave the conflict-torn country, reported Reuters, on Sunday.&nbsp;

Around 15 people, including a woman and child, are stuck in a Russian Orthodox church close to Khartoum, said the Russian ambassador, adding that while the evacuation plans were made, the implementation remains impossible as it involves crossing the frontlines.&nbsp;

Iraq, Lebanon, Tunisia, Libya, Jordan

The Iraqi embassy staff had been evacuated out of Khartoum, on Saturday and were followed by 14 citizens who arrived safely at a “secure site” at Port Sudan the next day.&nbsp;

Lebanon is planning to evacuate some 60 citizens by the sea who had left Khartoum by road and were “safe,” reported AFP.&nbsp;

While some Tunisian nationals were evacuated on Saudi ships, the embassy has said that the rest of the citizens will be extracted, on Monday.&nbsp;

On Friday, the Libyan embassy in Khartoum said it evacuated some 83 Libyans from the capital who will leave the country from Port Sudan.&nbsp;

Jordanian foreign ministry spokesman Sinan Majali said that the country has begun operations to evacuate some 300 of its citizens and is in “continuous cooperation with the UAE and Saudi Arabia for this purpose”.&nbsp;

Egypt&nbsp;

Egypt started evacuating citizens from Port Sudan and the city of Wadi Halfa in the northern part of the country and had earlier said there needed to be a “meticulous, safe and organised” evacuation process for some 10,000 of its citizens from its neighbouring Sudan. 
 
South Africa 
 
South Africa said Monday it had begun evacuating around 40 of its citizens in Sudan. "I can confirm that the operation to evacuate South Africans in Sudan and the staff at the South African embassy there is currently underway. They are being taken to a neighbouring country for safety," foreign affairs spokesman Clayson Monyela told AFP.&nbsp;

South Korea, Japan, Indonesia

South Korea and Japan have deployed forces to nearby countries for possible evacuations. 
 
While Indonesia has said 43 citizens were sheltering inside the embassy compound in Khartoum.

As US President Joe Biden is all set to kick off his re-election campaign as early as Tuesday, his team has picked Julie Chavez Rodriguez, a senior adviser at the White House, to be his campaign manager for the next year's 2024 presidential elections, reported Reuters citing a source.

Rodriguez was also Biden's deputy campaign manager of his 2020 presidential campaign. The White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs Director Rodriguez has agreed to accept the position, the source said.

Later, the source clarified that Rodriguez was not told about the position from Biden himself. After speaking with over a dozen candidates, Rodriguez emerged as the top pick for the position among Biden's senior advisors and closest aides, the source added.

According to a second source, Rodriguez has been Vice President Kamala Harris' most important ally in the West Wing during her struggles to gain the support of the political establishment in Washington. Rodriguez served as a top adviser in Senator Harris' Senate office and worked on her 2020 presidential campaign.

After a safe evacuation of its personnel and their families, the United States on Sunday announced that it is suspending its Embassy operations in&nbsp;Khartoum, Sudan. The US Department of State has temporarily suspended operations at our Embassy in Khartoum, Sudan and safely evacuated all US personnel and their dependents under our security responsibility, the statement read.&nbsp;It said that suspending operations at embassies is always a difficult decision, but the responsibility for the safety of its personnel comes first. &nbsp;

"I directed this temporary action due to the serious and growing security risks created by the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces," Antony Blinken said in the statement.&nbsp;

The statement further noted that the widespread fighting has caused "significant numbers of civilian deaths and injuries and damage to essential infrastructure" and "posed an unacceptable risk to our Embassy personnel."

Blinken also applauded the skill and professionalism of US team on the ground, US military forces, and others across the government who carried out this evacuation mission.

The Secretary of State said that America will continue to assist US citizens in Sudan in planning for their own safety and provide regular updates to US citizens in the area.

Blinken also urged both sides to adhere to international humanitarian law.&nbsp;

There are 40 minutes left before their departure. They (journalists) are all at the airport. They have no visas. The US Embassy replied to a our relevant request that ‘they work on it’”.&nbsp;

She added, “It’s an obvious manipulation of the freedom of speech and infringement on the rights of journalists.” Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said, “We won't forget, we will not forgive this,” referring to Washington’s supposed move. He also denounced it as a “stupid” failure of the US to give visas to Russian journalists.&nbsp;

“A country that calls itself the strongest, smartest, freest and fairest, chickened out,” said the Russian foreign minister, as per AFP, adding that this shows “the worth of their solemn assurances on freedom of speech.” This comes as Moscow has strongly tightened conditions to obtain the accreditations needed to get journalist visas in Russia.&nbsp;

Washington is yet to respond to these allegations.&nbsp;

The Russian foreign minister is said to chair several UNSC meetings in New York. However, Moscow’s UNSC presidency has drawn criticism from Kyiv which has previously called it a “slap in the face”.&nbsp;

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said, “We will find formats to respond to this so that the Americans remember for a long time that such things must not be done,” he was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies.&nbsp;

Citing a Russian diplomatic source, TASS reported that the US should not doubt that American journalists will feel maximally uncomfortable after Washington’s non-issuance of visas to Russian journalists.&nbsp;

Russian journalists also told news agency TASS that the US embassy in Moscow has not yet returned their passports and claimed they were invited to the embassy on visa-related matters on April 22 before the minister’s departure.&nbsp;

No plans for Lavrov-Blinken meeting&nbsp;

“There are no such plans. As a matter of fact, we have no agenda to be discussed by the ministers at this point,” said Ryabkov, on Sunday, ahead of the Russian delegation’s departure to New York, when asked about a possible meeting between the Russian foreign minister and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.&nbsp;

After being found guilty of spying, Iranian-American Morad Tahbaz, who is also a British citizen, was given a 10-year sentence. He has already spent five years of that time inside prison.&nbsp;

It would include citizens of “European and allied partner” nations, the ministry said.

As violence rages on in conflict-hit Sudan, the country's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) said early on Sunday the US diplomats and their families have been evacuated in coordination with US forces.&nbsp;&nbsp;

It also confirmed coordinating with the US forces in the evacuation of the embassy personnel. "The Rapid Support Forces Command has coordinated with the U.S Forces Mission consisting of 6 aircraft, for evacuating diplomats and their families on Sunday morning," the paramilitary group said in a tweet.

According to RSF, a US forces mission with six aircraft evacuated the US officials and their family members.

A source with knowledge of the situation who asked to remain anonymous confirmed to Reuters that the US military had successfully carried out the evacuation. However, it fell short of providing any other information related to the evacuation.

No comment was immediately made by the Pentagon too in this regard. The armed combat between opposing factions has so far claimed hundreds of lives.

The Sudanese Army said on Saturday, April 22, that additional countries, including the United Kingdom, France, and China, would also be evacuating their diplomats and citizens from the violence-hit nation.

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said Friday that US troops were positioned near Sudan to ensure safety for the Americans. "We always want to make sure that we're doing prudent planning, which is what we're doing," Austin said.

"We've deployed some forces into the theater to ensure that we provide as many options as possible if we are called on to do something. We haven't been called on to do anything yet."

According to World Health Organization, at least 413 people have died so far in the crossfire and 3,551 are left injured.

The announcement of the evacuation of US embassy personnel comes hours after the foreign ministry of Saudi Arabia said that about 150 people were rescued from Sudan and safely arrived in Jeddah.&nbsp;

Among those who arrived safely were diplomats and officials from several countries, including India. Saudi Arabia's naval forces coordinated the evacuation of these civilians.

As per the Kingdom's foreign ministry, as many as 91 of those evacuated were Saudi citizens and about 66 citizens from 12 other nations.

Moreover, people from Kuwait, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Canada, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Tunisia, and Burkina Faso were also evacuated, as reported by the Hindustan Times.
