US authorities alleged that Alexander Vinnik was involved in the infamous 2014 hack of Mt. Gox, a Japanese Bitcoin exchange that ultimately went bankrupt. According to the Justice Department, Vinnik acquired funds stolen from Mt. Gox and then laundered them through his own cryptocurrency exchanges, BTC-e and Tradehill, based in San Francisco.
Vinnik was initially extradited to France and later to the US, where he pleaded guilty in May 2024 to conspiracy to commit money laundering.

Vinnik was facing up to 20 years in prison. According to the court records, he was set to be sentenced in January but a US federal judge in November agreed to postpone the sentencing until June, in a brief order that did not cite the reason for the delay.
The US Attorney's Office for the Northern District of California revealed that BTC-e, operated by Alexander Vinnik, facilitated over $9 billion in transactions between 2011 and 2017, catering to more than a million users worldwide, including many in the United States, before being dismantled following Vinnik's arrest.

"BTC-e was one of the primary ways by which cyber criminals around the world transferred, laundered, and stored the criminal proceeds of their illegal activities," the attorney's office said last year.
It added that the exchange received criminal proceeds from numerous hacking incidents, ransomware attacks, identity theft schemes, corrupt public officials, and narcotics rings, and Vinnik ran it "with the intent to promote these unlawful activities".
Court records indicate that US District Judge Susan Illston arranged a Tuesday afternoon status conference regarding Vinnik's case, though the meeting's specifics remain undisclosed.

The United States is releasing Russian cryptocurrency kingpin Alexander Vinnik as part of an exchange deal that saw Moscow free US teacher Marc Fogel a day earlier, a White House official said Wednesday.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, replied "yes" when asked if US authorities had released or would be releasing Vinnik in exchange for Fogel.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Kremlin confirmed the two sides had agreed to the "release of Fogel and one Russian citizen, who is held in detention in the United States," but did not identify him.

Vinnik pleaded guilty in May 2024 to "conspiracy to commit money laundering related to his role in operating the cryptocurrency exchange BTC-e from 2011 to 2017," according to the US Justice Department.
US President Donald Trump's government has hailed the prisoner exchange as a positive sign for diplomacy between the two countries and for possible negotiations over an end to the Ukraine war.
"President Trump, Steve Witkoff and the President's advisors negotiated an exchange that serves as a show of good faith from the Russians and a sign we are moving in the right direction to end the brutal and terrible war in Ukraine," US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz said in a statement.

On Wednesday, US Middle East envoy Witkoff hailed Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's (MBS) "instrumental" role in securing Fogel's release.
"He has a very strong friendship with President Trump," he said of the 39-year-old de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia. "Behind the scenes, he was encouraging and pushing and looking for the right result."
On the Russian side, Witkoff said a man he named only as Kirill also played an "important" role.
"There's a gentleman from Russia, his name is Kirill, and he had a lot to do with this. He was important, he was an important interlocutor bridging the two sides," said the US envoy, offering no further details on the man's identity.
Vinnik was extradited to the United States from Greece in August 2022, hours after he had been released from a French jail.
He was the operator of BTC-e, one of the world's largest cryptocurrency exchanges that processed more than $9 billion in transactions, according to US court documents.
US authorities say the exchange was "one of the primary ways by which cyber criminals around the world transferred, laundered, and stored the criminal proceeds of their illegal activities."

US President Donald Trump's executive order aimed to strip birthright citizenship from children of temporary visa holders, sending shockwaves through immigrant communities, particularly Indians in America.
This move has left thousands of expecting Indian parents in a state of uncertainty, despite the policy being temporarily blocked due to legal challenges.
The uncertainty surrounding this policy has left many expecting parents, including Indians, in a difficult position. With the policy's fate hanging in the balance, these families are facing an uncertain future, unsure of their children's citizenship status.

An Indian couple, Neha Satpute and Akshay Pise, who are engineers on H-1B visas for skilled foreign workers, are expecting their son, due on Feb 26, to be born as American citizens.
Employed at a large tech firm with a supportive parental leave policy, they had carefully built their life in San Jose, California.
"This impacts us directly," says Akshay. "If the order takes effect, we don't know what comes next—it's uncharted territory." Their biggest question: What nationality will their child have?
Their concern is valid, says New York-based immigration attorney Cyrus Mehta: "US law has no provision for granting non-immigrant status to a person born here."

As their baby's arrival draws near, the expecting parents sought medical advice on potentially inducing labour early. Their doctor suggested that, under ideal circumstances, they could consider inducing labour at 40 weeks, but the couple has decided to wait it out.
"I want the natural process to take its course," says Neha. Akshay adds, "My priority is safe delivery and my wife's health. Citizenship comes second."

Three federal judges ruled against the policy

A third federal judge on Monday (Feb 10) blocked President Donald Trump's executive order ending birthright citizenship for the children of temporary visa holders.
The ruling from US District Judge Joseph N. Laplante in New Hampshire comes after two similar rulings by judges in Seattle and Maryland last week. A lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union contends that Trump's order violates the Constitution and "attempts to upend one of the most fundamental American constitutional values."

The Big Four firm cited the need to "align with emerging government client practices and requirements".
This comes as Trump on Wednesday (Feb 5) signed executive orders, with an aim to "restore biological truth to the federal government," which includes recognising only two sexes in official documents and messaging.
