The International Criminal Court slammed sanctions Friday slapped by US President Donald Trump over its probes targeting America and Israel and pledged to press on with its aim to fight for "justice and hope" around the world.
The United Nations and the European Union also urged Trump on Friday to reverse the decision ordering asset freezes and travel bans against ICC officials, employees and their family members, along with anyone deemed to have helped the court's investigations.
The sanctions could impact the court's technical and IT operations, including evidence gathering. There are fears victims of alleged atrocities may hesitate to come forward.

Trump signed an executive order Thursday saying the court in The Hague had "abused its power" by issuing an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who held talks with the US president on Tuesday.
The ICC said the move sought to "harm its independent and impartial judicial work".
"The Court stands firmly by its personnel and pledges to continue providing justice and hope to millions of innocent victims of atrocities across the world," it said.
The United Nations said it deeply regretted Trump's decision and urged him to reverse the move.

"The rule of law remains essential to our collective peace and security. Seeking accountability globally makes the world a safer place for everyone."
Antonio Costa, who heads the European Council representing the EU's 27 member states, wrote on X that the move "undermines the international criminal justice system".
The European Commission separately expressed "regret", stressing the ICC's "key importance in upholding international criminal justice and the fight against impunity."
The executive order risks "affecting ongoing investigations and proceedings, including as regards Ukraine, impacting years of efforts to ensure accountability around the world," said a commission spokesman.
The names of the individuals affected by the sanctions were not immediately released, but previous US sanctions under Trump had targeted the court's prosecutor.
Trump's order said the tribunal had engaged in "illegitimate and baseless actions targeting America and our close ally Israel," referring to ICC probes into alleged war crimes by US service members in Afghanistan and Israeli troops in Gaza.
Israel's foreign minister applauded Trump, calling the court's actions against Israel illegitimate.
"I strongly commend @POTUS President Trump's executive order imposing sanctions on the so-called 'international criminal court'," Gideon Saar wrote on X, adding that the ICC's actions were "immoral and have no legal basis".

Following a request by ICC prosecutor Karim Khan, judges issued arrest warrants on November 21 for Netanyahu, his former defence minister Yoav Gallant, and Hamas's military chief Mohammed Deif -- whom Israel says is dead.
The court said it had found "reasonable grounds" to believe Netanyahu and Gallant bore "criminal responsibility" for the war crime of starvation as a method of warfare during the Gaza war, as well as the crimes against humanity of murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts.
Netanyahu has accused the court of anti-Semitism.
During his first term, Trump imposed financial sanctions and a visa ban on the ICC's then prosecutor Fatou Bensouda, and other senior officials and staff in 2020.

While his order at the time did not name Israel, Trump administration officials said they were also angered by Bensouda's opening of a probe into the situation in the Palestinian territories in 2019.
President Joe Biden lifted the sanctions soon after taking office in 2021.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said on Friday that India has raised concerns with the United States over the treatment of Indian migrants deported earlier this week.
The deportees, 104 in total, were sent back on a US military aircraft and were reportedly shackled throughout the journey before being freed upon arrival in Amritsar.

Since winning the US election in November, US President Donald Trump has refused to rule out the use of force to seize the canal built by Washington over a century ago and later handed over to Panama.
Around 40 per cent of US container traffic passes through the narrow body of water linking the Caribbean Sea with the Pacific Ocean.

The new row between Panama and Washington erupted after the US State Department claimed that Panama had agreed to let US government vessels through the canal for free after talks last weekend between Mulino and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
In a post on the social media platform X, the State Department claimed the decision would save the US government "millions of dollars a year."
The Panama Canal Authority, which runs the waterway, quickly rejected the claim, saying it had "not made any adjustments" to its tariffs.
US government vessels, which would be primarily from the navy, make up a small portion of the ships that pass through the canal.
Trump has loudly complained that US vessels are being overcharged to use the shipping route.
Both he and Rubio have complained about Chinese investment in the canal—a subsidiary of a Hong Kong firm operates ports on the waterway—and warned that Beijing could close the canal to the United States in a crisis.
Panama has forcefully denied Trump's claim that China has a role in running the canal.

Trump and Mulino are scheduled to hold telephone talks on Friday to discuss the issue.
In a key concession to Washington ahead of the discussions, Mulino on Thursday confirmed that Panama had pulled out of China's massive Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) infrastructure program.
Mulino said that the Panamanian Embassy in Beijing had given China the required 90-day notice of its decision not to renew its involvement in the BRI, which it joined in 2017.
Panama is the first Latin American country to announce its withdrawal from the trillion-dollar program, which operates in over 100 countries.

Soon after US President Donald Trump took office, he and his administration took several stringent measures against various old policies, defying legal limits.
However, other US presidents have occasionally claimed a constitutional right to bypass particular rights. But, Trump, in his opening weeks, blew through apparent legal limits.
Although some of Trump's actions have prompted legal challenges, his administration may be betting on rulings in its favour with a Republican-appointed Supreme Court supermajority.

Here are some of the Trump administration's law-defying examples:

TikTok ban

The Trump administration ordered the Justice Department not to enforce a ban on TikTok for 75 days. It further asked them to notify the app and its business partners that defying the law is no criminal offence.
It could be violating the law barring TikTok from operating in the US unless and until its Chinese owner sells it.

Foreign aid freeze

The administration gave a blanket order to pause US-funded programmes and temporarily freeze most foreign aid.
As the longer it lasts, blocking congressionally approved spending comes into greater tension with Impoundment Control Act, The New York Times reported.

US Agency for International Development

Trump moved to dismantle the USAID and turn its functions into the US State Department, as it also made Secretary of State Marco Rubio its acting director.
It could be violating a law in which Congress created USAID and structured it as a stand-alone entity.

Inspectors General

The Trump administration fired 17 inspectors general, including the watchdog officials who hunt for waste, fraud, abuse, and illegality in government agencies.
It might violate the law that states presidents have to give Congress 30 days’ notice and a written “substantive rationale, including detailed and case-specific reasons” before any such dismissal.

Domestic grants freeze

The Office of Management and Budget ordered agencies to carry out a blanket temporary freeze of up to $3 trillion in domestic grants and other government spending.
Following this, the freeze was temporarily blocked by two courts after plaintiffs raised challenges, including provisions in the Administrative Procedure Act and First Amendment rights.

National Labor Relations Board

Trump summarily fired a Democratic member of the independent agency before her term was up, hammering the board by leaving it without a quorum.
It violated the law, which states that presidents may only remove board members "upon notice and hearing, for neglect of duty or malfeasance in office, but for no other cause.”

Federal prosecutors

Trump fired prosecutors involved in the cases against him or the January 6 riots.
It could violate the law stating civil service job protections against arbitrarily firing federal workers without a reasonable cause and without holding hearings before the Merit System Protection Board.

Birthright citizenship

The Trump administration declared that the constitution's 14th Amendment will no longer be interpreted as granting citizenship to babies born on US soil to undocumented parents or visitors.
It could be violating the longstanding understanding that the 14th Amendment does grant citizenship to such infants. The federal judge on Tuesday barred agencies from following this order as of now.

US Senator Josh Hawley has introduced a bill to curb China’s influence in artificial intelligence. If passed, the law would impose severe penalties, including up to 20 years in prison, a $1 million fine, or both, for individuals who knowingly download Chinese-developed AI models like DeepSeek.
The measure signals escalating tensions between the U.S. and China as both nations race for AI dominance.

Aim of the bill

The bill, filed last week, aims to ban US persons from advancing AI capabilities tied to China, including the rising star in AI, DeepSeek.
Harvard AI research fellow Ben Brooks claimed that the measure stands out as “the most aggressive legislative action on AI to date," as quoted by the report.

What does the US Senator say?

Hawley, in a statement, said, “Every dollar and gig of data that flows into Chinese AI are dollars and data that will ultimately be used against the United States. America cannot afford to empower our greatest adversary at the expense of our own strength. Ensuring American economic superiority means cutting China off from American ingenuity and halting the subsidisation of CCP innovation.”

Hawley also described DeepSeek as “a data-harvesting, low-cost AI model that sparked international concern and sent American technology stocks plummeting.”

Will the bill be passed?

While the bill's future is uncertain as it was tabled shortly after its introduction, its existence signals the growing urgency in Congress to address the security and economic concerns surrounding AI technologies.
Though Hawley’s bill may not pass in its current form, the introduction of the bill indicates that Congress could bring forward more AI restrictions in the coming months. Whether or not DeepSeek will be formally banned, the debate over China’s role in AI is far from over.

Katz said Gazans should have "freedom of movement and migration" and countries critical of Israel's war with Hamas were "obligated" to take them in.
