In a remarkable turn of events, the US Senate on Wednesday cleared a 60-vote procedural hurdle in a test of support for a long contentious bill on same-sex relationships. Breaking a filibuster to start off debate on passing of this landmark bill providing federal protection for same sex and interracial marriages, the Senate voted 62-37 in support of the bill. In view of this, the Democrats supporters of the bill are hoping to get the legislation passed by the end of the year.

Officials of Yale's and Harvard's law school have announced that they will no longer be participating in US News and World Report's annual rankings of the top law schools in the world, saying its ‘methodologies are profoundly flawed’.

CBS News quoted an official from the Yale, Dean Heather K Gerken, saying in a blog post that the methodology adopted for the ranking list is "profoundly flawed". She said, "We have reached a point where the rankings process is undermining the core commitments of the legal profession," noting that the school "has taken the top spot every year" since the rankings began. "As a result, we will no longer participate."

Gerken said that the list discourages low-income students or public service aspiring students to pursue courses as it excludes loan-forgiveness programmes in student debts. The Public Service Programmes Loan Forgiveness was introduced in 2007 for forgiving loans for American students who wish to work in public service jobs.

The officials further said that the rankings list discourages universities from admitting low-income background students. For example, one such measure is "reputation" or how the college deals with rival colleges. The critics argued that this has little to do with the college's ability to educate its students. Another instance critics found was that it reinforces income inequality, hence reducing diversity among students.

Harvard's Dean John Manning in a mail sent to CBS News said that it will also be wilfully dropping out from the list, "because it has become impossible to reconcile our principles and commitments with the methodology and incentives the US News rankings reflect."

Neither Yale nor Harvard will be harmed by withdrawing their names from the list, given their strong global positions, and successful, renowned alumni. Yale's alumni include former US President Bill Clinton and four of the US Supreme Court judges. Both also have a budget to help students from low-income backgrounds. The US News and World Report were earlier criticised after the University of Colombia submitted inaccurate data to bolster its ranking. Further, it said that it will not be providing any information for the list. Despite this decision, the university was able to secure the second rank, with Ivy League School's rank tumbling to 18.

Yale and Harvard law schools withdraw from US News annual rankings over 'profoundly flawed' methodologies

On Tuesday, United States’ retail giant Walmart offered to pay $3.1 billion to settle the lawsuits against the company for the damage caused by prescription opioids sold at its pharmacies. This comes weeks after the country’s largest pharmacy chains, CVS Health and Walgreen Co. proposed a similar $5 billion each settlement.

In a statement, the Arkansas-based Walmart said that it “strongly disputes” the allegations put forth by state and local governments in the lawsuits accusing its pharmacies of not adhering to the standards of filling the prescriptions for the powerful prescription drugs.

They believe that the settlement is in the “best interest of all parties and will provide significant aid to communities across the country in the fight against the opioid crisis, with aid reaching state and local governments faster than any other nationwide opioid settlement to date.” However, the company has not admitted any liability with the lawsuit.

The 26th edition of the multinational maritime exercise 'Malabar 22' culminated in the seas off Japan on 15th November. Hosted by the Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF), this edition of Malabar also marked the 30th anniversary of the maritime exercise. The exercise began in 1992, as a bilateral exercise between the Indian Navy and the US Navy. Later, the exercise gained further prominence with the joining of navies of Australia and Japan.

For a period of five days, the sea-phase of Malabar 22 was conducted near Yokosuka, Japan and witnessed live weapon firings, surface, anti-air and anti-submarine warfare drills and tactical procedures. Another highlight of the sea phase was the conduct of 'War at Sea' exercise, which enabled all four navies to consolidate interoperability and hone tactical skills.

Top champagne brands like Moët & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot, Krug and Dom Pérignon are facing massive supply shortages in the US and Europe as pent-up demand for the spirited drink is running their stocks dry, following the easing of Covid restrictions.

Buoyed by the strong demand after an initial slump in 2021, the champagne makers are now dubbing this phenomenon as the “roaring 20s”—a term used to describe economic prosperity a century ago.

The surge in demand for champagne is being seen as a larger desire for luxury goods across the board among affluent people. After a slight slump in sales during the beginning of the pandemic, companies are reporting impressive numbers as people spend the money they saved during months of lockdowns.

The pent-up demand is co-related with the explosion of high net-worth individuals after the recovery from the pandemic. According to research by the investment bank Credit Suisse, there are now a record 218,200 people classed as ultra-high net worth (UHNW), with assets of more than $50m.

Chief executive of Moët Hennessy Philippe Schaus has said that 2022 would be “a fabulous year” for its champagne.

“We are running out of stock on our best champagnes. As people are coming out of Covid, there’s been pent-up demand for luxury, enjoyment and travelling,” Schaus told Bloomberg at New Economy Forum in Singapore on Tuesday.

Intelligence officers of the US and Russia reportedly met face-to-face in Ankara amidst of nuclear threats from Kremlin and “unjust” custody of American prisoners by Russia. According to reports, the meeting took place on Monday between CIA Director William Burns and his Russian counterpart Sergei Naryshkin. Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov said it came as "an initiative of the American side”. But he did not provide further details. The White House in a statement clarified that the meeting wasn’t related to ending the war. "He is not conducting negotiations of any kind. He is not discussing settlement of the war in Ukraine," the statement said. "We firmly stick to our fundamental principle: nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine," it said. The CIA chief’s message was "on the consequences of the use of nuclear weapons by Russia," and the risk of "escalation to strategic stability," the White House said in a statement. This comes at a time when Russian President Vladimir Putin has been repeating his rhetoric on the possibility of using tactical nuclear weapons in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
