On Monday, amid her ongoing visit to the Philippines, United States Vice President, Kamala Harris met with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at the presidential palace in Manila and reaffirmed Washington’s “unwavering” commitment to defend its ally in the event of an attack in the South China Sea.&nbsp;

“We stand with you in defence of international rules and norms as it relates to the South China Sea,” said Harris to Marcos during their meeting. She added, “An armed attack on Philippine armed forces, vessels or aircraft in the South China Sea would invoke U.S. mutual defence commitments…that is our unwavering commitment to the Philippines.”&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Marcos said that he does not see a future for Manila “that does not include the United States”. Ahead of the high-level talks, on Sunday, a Philippine military commander accused a Chinese coast guard ship of “forcefully” retrieving a piece of suspected rocket debris floating in the ocean which was being towed by a Philippine vessel in the South China Sea.&nbsp;

However, China has since denied these allegations and said that it was taken after “both sides had a friendly negotiation at the scene”, following which the Philippines “handed over” the object to the Chinese, said Beijing's foreign ministry spokeswoman, Mao Ning, on Monday during a press briefing.&nbsp;

The vice president’s visit will mark the highest-level trip by an administration official, during which she will also meet her Philippine counterpart Sara Dutrete, daughter of the former leader. The vice president then&nbsp;will visit&nbsp;Palawan province along the South China Sea to meet fishermen, officials, the coast guard and the locals. The province is also seen at the forefront of the long ongoing territorial disputes involving China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan.

Washington with this visit is trying to strengthen its military alliance with the Philippines, including a mutual defence treaty and a 2014 pact which will allow the US to store its defence equipment and supply one to five Philippines bases.&nbsp;

Beijing has long claimed some of the territories off the coast of Palawan and much of that sea is China’s citing historical maps. However, an international arbitration, in 2016 said that their claims have no legal basis and ruled in the favour of Manila.&nbsp;

Harris will also deliver a speech before the Philippines’ police, coast guard, military and government officials and highlight the importance of international law, unhindered trade and navigation freedom in the South China Sea, said spokesperson, Commodore Armand Balilo.

Philippine Ambassador to the US, Jose Manuel Romualdez while speaking to AP said that this trip shows the obvious message to the Chinese that “we support our allies like the Philippines on these disputed islands.” He added that this visit is also a “significant step” which shows how seriously Washington views this situation. &nbsp;

Notably, Marcos' predecessor, Rodrigo Duterte had a strained relationship with the US and had threatened to sever ties with the US amid perceived closeness to Beijing. Therefore, Washington is now looking to strengthen ties with the new administration after Marcos Jr took office in June following a landslide electoral victory. According to a report by the New York Times, a former evangelical activist in a letter claimed that he knew the outcome of the 2014 Supreme Court decision involving contraception and the Affordable Care Act prior to the formal ruling. The information was supposedly given to him by a wealthy political donor who was allegedly told about the ruling by Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito during a dinner at his residence.&nbsp;

The letter in question was sent by Rev. Rob Schenck earlier this year to Chief Justice John Roberts and was later procured by the Times, said that he was told about the upcoming ruling by Gayle Wright weeks before the public announcement after the two had dinner at Justice Alito’s home with his wife Martha-Ann Alito.&nbsp;

Notably, Alito wrote the majority opinion in 2014 for the Burwell v. Hobby Lobby which ruled in the favour of family-owned corporations like Hobby Lobby which had objected to a provision of the Affordable Care Act mandating employers to provide health insurance that includes contraception coverage.

This comes months after the draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade, the constitutional right to abortion, was leaked and reported first by Politico in May, also written by Justice Alito. However, since the New York Times report emerged, the supreme court justice in a statement to the media has vehemently denied these allegations and called them “completely false”.&nbsp;

“The allegation that the Wrights were told the outcome of the decision in the Hobby Lobby case, or the authorship of the opinion of the Court, by me or my wife is completely false,” said Justice Alito in a statement. He added, “My wife and I became acquainted with the Wrights some years ago because of their strong support for the Supreme Court Historical Society, and since then, we have had a casual and purely social relationship”. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The Wrights also never made any effort to obtain “confidential information or to influence anything that I did in either an official or private capacity”, said Alito and would be “shocked and offended if those allegations are true,” to ABC news. Meanwhile, Gayle Wright, in a telephonic interview with the Times also denied obtaining or passing along any such information.&nbsp;

Schenck said that he came forward with the letter now to help with the ongoing investigation into the leaked draft of the majority opinion to overturn Roe. However, his account of the leak “has gaps”, said the Times report, but a series of exchanged emails and conservations imply that he knew about the ruling beforehand.&nbsp;

The former evangelical activist also wrote that since there may be a “severe penalty” levied on the person responsible for the initial leak or the recent draft opinion he thought that the 2014 incident might, “bear some consideration”.&nbsp;

This comes as the SCOTUS has been under scrutiny since May 2022 after the leak of the majority opinion to overturn Roe with many accusing&nbsp;the conservative majority of&nbsp;politicisation. Several recent polls have indicated that the supreme court's&nbsp;public approval has reached record lows. Earlier this year, Alito had called the draft opinion leak of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case a “grave betrayal”, the ruling for which was announced in June.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, several mostly Democrat lawmakers have called for an investigation including US Representative Mondaire Jones, a Democrat from New York, who took to Twitter and said, “Today’s well-sourced NY Times article strongly suggests Justice Alito leaked the 2014 opinion in Hobby Lobby, and describes a conspiracy by the far-right donor class to influence the Supreme Court Justices. The House Judiciary Committee must investigate this while we still can.”&nbsp;

The executive director of the judicial group, Demand Justice, Brian Fallon, also called on the Senate Judiciary Committee “to investigate the apparent leak.” He added, “The whistleblower in this report…should be called to testify about both the leak and the yearslong lobbying effort he once led to cultivate Alito and other Republican justices,” he said in a statement.&nbsp;

The Times report was the latest proof of “Republican justices on the Court are little more than politicians in robes,” said Fallon. Meanwhile, Senator Dick Durbin, a Democrat and head of the Senate Judiciary Committee in a statement said the panel is reviewing these “serious allegations” and urged the passage of pending legislation in Congress which would create a code of ethics for the Supreme Court.&nbsp;

“It is unacceptable that members of the highest court in the land are exempted from the judicial code of ethics when wealthy special interests are spending millions of dollars in dark money to influence the Court’s decisions,” said Durbin in a written statement on Saturday.&nbsp;

US: Justice Alito denies allegations of involvement in 2014 Supreme Court leak, amid calls for probe

John Kerry, United States' climate envoy, met his Chinese counterpart Xie Zhenhua on Sunday (November 20) and called on Beijing to "accelerate progress together" on reducing emissions of greenhouse gases. Kerry met Zhenhua during COP27 UN summit in Egypt.

The US and China are world's largest economies and account for a big chunk of greenhouse gases emissions. US President Joe Biden met Chinese President Xi Jinping in G20 summit in Indonesia last week.

China suspended climate talks with the US as it was angry at US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visiting Taiwan.

Cooperation between the superpowers is key in the fight against global warming and has led to breakthroughs at past UN climate conferences, notably the landmark 2015 Paris Agreement.

"The climate crisis in fundamentally a global -- not a bilateral -- issue," Kerry said in a statement.

"The United States and China should be able to accelerate progress together, not only for our sake, but for future generations," Kerry added.

"All nations have a stake in the choices China makes in this critical decade... We are all hopeful that China will live up to its global responsibility."

Xie described his talks with Kerry as "candid, friendly, positive" and "overall very constructive".

"We have agreed that after this COP we will continue formal conversations, including face-to-face meetings," he told reporters on Saturday.

US urges Chinese cooperation to cut greenhouse gas emissions

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in an interview with CNN warned that an economic recession might be on the horizon and people should avoid making large purchases in the coming months. He said the US was staring at a recession, and people should postpone buying big-ticket items such as cars and TVs.

The Trump Organization, which bears Donald Trump's name, is also on trial in New York for deceit and tax fraud. The business, which manages hotels, golf courses, and other properties globally, allegedly&nbsp;ran a 15-year plan to provide high-level executives perks like fancy cars and residences while avoiding paying taxes on such payments.

Nine charges of tax fraud, grand larceny, and fabricating business documents are brought against two Trump Organization corporations in what prosecutors claim was a 15-year plot to cheat tax authorities by neglecting to declare and pay taxes on employee salaries.

<h2>Trump vs. New York attorney general</h2>

After a long drawn investigation, New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a lawsuit against Donald Trump, three of his adult children, and the Trump Organization in September. She claimed that they were all complicit in a massive fraud that lasted more than 10 years and was used by the former president to enrich himself.

James said that the Trump Organization, including its hotels and golf courses, was the target of the deception. The complaint alleges that the Trump Organization inflated the worth of his properties using false evaluations, deceiving lenders, insurers, and tax authorities.

<h2>Mar-a-Lago documents: The case of missing government records</h2>

Trump is the subject of a criminal investigation by the US Department of Justice for keeping official documents after leaving office in January 2021, including some that were classified.

During a search that was permitted by the court on August 8 at Trump's Mar-a-Lago home in Florida, the FBI took 11,000 papers. There were about 100 documents classified as such, some of which were also tagged as 'top secret', the most serious classification.

Asserting that both of these actions are impeding the criminal investigation, the Justice Department has requested a federal appeals court to put a halt to that review and grant it access to the unclassified papers found during the search.

<h2>Defamation case:&nbsp;E. Jean Carroll</h2>

E. Jean Carroll, a former journalist for Elle magazine, filed a defamation lawsuit against Trump in 2019 after he refuted her claim that he sexually assaulted her in the 1990s in a department&nbsp;store&nbsp;in New York City. In order to increase book sales, Trump charged her of lying.

Trump has contended that a federal provision that protects government workers from defamation charges shields him from Carroll's lawsuit. The Manhattan-based 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals determined in September that Trump was a government employee when he labelled Carroll a liar, but left open the issue of whether he was operating in his capacity as president at the time.

On January 10, 2023, an appeals court in Washington, D.C., will hear oral arguments and evaluate the issue.

Even if the defamation case is dropped, Carroll intends to sue Trump for violence and purposeful infliction of mental distress in accordance with New York state law.

<h2>Election rigging investigation in Georgia</h2>

The investigation into Trump's alleged attempts to sway the outcome of the 2020 election in Georgia was given extraordinary grand jury empanelled status in May.

A call that Republican Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger had from Trump on January 2, 2021 is one of the main topics of the inquiry. In order to "discover" the necessary number of votes to reverse Trump's Georgia loss, Raffensperger was tasked by Trump.

Trump could have broken at least three Georgia election-related criminal crimes, according to legal experts: conspiracy to commit election fraud, criminal solicitation to commit election fraud, and deliberate meddling with the conduct of elections.

<h2>US Capitol attack</h2>

The matter of whether Trump violated the law in his attempts to avenge his loss in the 2020 election is being looked into by a House of Representatives committee looking into the assault on the US Capitol by Trump supporters on January 6, 2021. The certification of the election results by Congress was a goal of the protesters.

The committee subpoenaed Trump in October to speak under oath and provide records.

Republican committee vice-chair Liz Cheney has stated the group may recommend potential criminal charges against Trump to the Justice Department.

Trump's federal crimes may or may not be investigated by the Justice Department. In the upcoming weeks, the panel will probably provide its findings.

The panel's inquiry has been criticised by Trump as being politically motivated.

The United States should not expect the Netherlands to follow its approach on China export restrictions, said a Dutch official on Friday, during an interview. These remarks were the first by the Netherlands on the issue as the United States President Joe Biden’s administration has been pushing for a multilateral agreement to impose restrictions on China which reportedly aims to keep advanced chip technologies away from Beijing and its military.&nbsp;

In an interview with a Dutch newspaper, NRC, Foreign Trade Minister, Liesje Schreinemacher said, “The Netherlands will not copy the American measures one-to-one.” The country will make its own assessment and consult partner countries such as Japan and the US, she added. The trade minister also said that the country will likely introduce certain export controls on China by itself.&nbsp;

“We already have restrictions in our export licensing policy. I can imagine that we will look at semiconductors and the chip market with a more critical eye,” she said during the interview. Furthermore, Schreinemacher also spoke about how the Dutch government needs additional time to decide these potential new rules without going into any specifics.&nbsp;

Notably, the Netherlands is home to ASML Holding NV which is a dominant player in the semiconductor-manufacturing market. On Friday, France reaffirmed its support for India&nbsp;as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. This comes after the United Kingdom also extended its support for permanent membership of New Delhi&nbsp;among the four countries, receiving mounting support from Veto members.&nbsp;

“France endorses the candidacy of Germany, Brazil, India and Japan as permanent members for permanent seats,” said Nathalie Broadhurst Estival, France's&nbsp;Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN while addressing the UN General Assembly on the annual debate on UNSC reform.&nbsp;

France's envoy has also called for “greater representation” from African countries among the permanent members as well as remaining seats for “equitable geographical representation.” The debate was about the ‘Question of equitable representation on an increase in the membership of the Security Council and other matters related to the Security Council’. Furthermore, Broadhurst said that to preserve its executive and operational nature the UNSC permanent members could have up to 25 members.&nbsp;

She further explained that the objective of the UNSC must remain twofold - to consolidate the Council’s legitimacy and “to strengthen its capacity to fully assume its responsibilities in the maintenance of international peace and security.” France’s deputy permanent representative also stated that the question of veto is “eminently sensitive” and stressed that it is up to the State requesting a permanent seat to decide on the matter.&nbsp;
