<h2>Committee’s recommendation</h2>

The report released on Tuesday, along with a ban on WeChat, also consists of 17 other recommendations, including new transparency rules enforceable by fines.&nbsp;

The five-people committee led by Liberal Party Senator and shadow cyber security minister, James Paterson, also called for the ban on TikTok from federal government devices in Canberra to be extended to the devices of government contractors who also have access to Australian government data. This extended ban should also cover WeChat, according to the report.&nbsp;

Lawmakers have said they had been “particularly concerned” with the “unique national security risks” posed by companies like TikTok and WeChat “whose parent companies ByteDance and Tencent respectively, are irrefutably headquartered in and run from authoritarian countries like China”.

It also recommends the government should enforce a set of transparency rules for social media platforms which include, having an Australian presence,&nbsp;labelling state-affiliated media,&nbsp;disclosing content censorship,&nbsp;actions against accounts of elected officials, and government directions about content on their platforms.

If the social media platforms fail to meet the minimum transparency requirements or to abide by the rules, the companies should be fined and banned, as a last resort, at the discretion of the home affairs minister.

The committee also recommended that if the United States government forced ByteDance to divest its stake in TikTok, then the Australian government should also consider similar steps and ensure TikTok Australia is also separated from its China-based parent company.

Paterson told the Senate on Tuesday, how the health of social media networks directly affects the health of the country and foreign “authoritarian states know this”. The committee also recommended that Canberra help developing countries in the Indo-Pacific resist “malicious information operations” by authoritarian states.

“They (authoritarian states) do not permit free debate on their own social media platforms. They use ours as a vector for information operations to shape our decision-making in their national interest – at the expense of our own,” said Paterson, as quoted by The Guardian.&nbsp;

He also said that not all social media platforms are the same since the ability for a social media platform to be “weaponised” varies depending on the laws of the country where it is headquartered.

A report by Guardian Australia, back in April confirmed that the Chinese messaging app was banned in nearly a dozen federal departments, including the department of prime minister and cabinet, the department of foreign affairs and trade and so on.&nbsp;

The latest recommendations also did not face any pushback from the opposition Labor and the Greens parties but noted that while they were in favour of the proposed transparency framework a nationwide ban on certain apps would not be effective.&nbsp;

Ella Woods-Joyce, TikTok’s director of public policy for Australia and New Zealand, said that while the company disagrees with some of the characterisations and statements about the Chinese video app, it welcomed that there was a nationwide ban recommended.&nbsp;

According to the police, the incident took place on Sunday at 1:15 pm (local time) where the man struck the migrant workers outside of a Walmart Supercenter before fleeing the scene. The supposed attack took place in the North Carolina city of Lincolnton, which is home to around 11,000 people.&nbsp;

The Lincolnton Police Department, in a statement, describing the incident said that it occurred outside the local Walmart, where a motorist of an older model mid-size black Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) hit six migrant workers.&nbsp;

The incident also comes amid intensifying political rhetoric against immigrants as White House hopefuls, mostly&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/its-un-american-its-reckless-white-house-says-republicans-using-migrants-as-political-pawns-516776">Republican candidates</a>, have repeatedly rallied against migrants in campaign speeches.

According to the police, the officers were called after residents spotted the bear in the Burbank hillside neighbourhood which is about 16 kilometres north of Los Angeles and near the Verdugo Mountains.

Several comments favoured the bear’s move to take a dip amid soaring temperatures in California. “The scorching heat is taking a toll on this poor fellow,” said one user on X, formerly known as Twitter.&nbsp;

While another user said, “I don’t blame him. Let the poor guy enjoy some much needed cooling off.” A third user joked, “Let him enjoy the bear necessities of life.”

However, others also expressed concerns about the bear’s whereabouts and asked for an update asking if it was okay. “What did y’all do with the bear? I hope she’s ok. Please provide an update,” said one of the users.&nbsp;

<h2>Police issue bear safety tips</h2>

In a statement on Friday, the police said that after a short dip, the bear climbed over a wall and headed to a tree behind the home.&nbsp;

The incident also prompted the police department to issue a warning to residents to avoid bears and “Bear Necessities Safety Tips”.

This includes never feeding or approaching a bear; securing food, garbage and recycling; cleaning and storing outdoor grills properly; keeping dogs leashed to avoid frightening the bear and prompting it to attack; removing bird feeders and pet food; and advising residents to carry bear spray.

A third firefighter lost his life while battling one of the massive blazes during the worst wildfire season on record in Canada, said officials on Saturday (July 29). This comes days after two other firefighters died, in separate incidents, while also tackling the record-breaking Canadian wildfires.

The announcement was made by the premier of the Canadian province of British Columbia, David Eby, in a statement. “I am devastated to learn that we have lost another wildfire fighter. My heart goes out to the family, friends and colleagues of this frontline hero,” said Eby.&nbsp;

However, he did not identify the firefighter. Local officials said that the victim was at the Donnie Creek wildfire, near Fort St John, in the northeast of the province.&nbsp;

<h2>Evacuation order issued for Osoyoos</h2>

An evacuation order was issued for the Canadian town of Osoyoos and its surrounding district after an out-of-control wildfire crossed the border from the US state of Washington. According to the British Columbia Wildfire Service, the blaze, called Eagle Bluff, is around four kilometres away from the town.&nbsp;

It is also reported to be some 200 hectares in size on the Canadian side of the border and 2,000 hectares on the United States side. According to local media reports, the order was issued on Saturday evening for 732 properties in and around Osoyoos.&nbsp;

The orders also cover an area north of the border to the intersection of Highway 97 and Highway 3, as well as west and north along Highway 3.

<h2>Record-breaking wildfires in Canada</h2>

A third of all the fires currently raging in Canada&nbsp;are in British Columbia amid the country’s worst wildfire season on record. The Canadian province currently has 368 active fires out of the 990 fires which are currently reported to be ravaging Canada. At least 613 of these wildfires are considered out of control.

This comes days after two other firefighters died, in separate incidents, while also tackling the record-breaking Canadian wildfires. What do we know about the firefighter’s death? The announcement was made by the premier of the Canadian province of British Columbia, David Eby, in a statement. “I am devastated to learn that we have lost another wildfire fighter. My heart goes out to the family, friends and colleagues of this frontline hero,” said Eby. However, he did not identify the firefighter. Local officials said that the victim was at the Donnie Creek wildfire, near Fort St John, in the northeast of the province. Evacuation order issued for Osoyoos An evacuation order was issued for the Canadian town of Osoyoos and its surrounding district after an out-of-control wildfire crossed the border from the US state of Washington. According to the British Columbia Wildfire Service, the blaze, called Eagle Bluff, is around four kilometres away from the town. It is also reported to be some 200 hectares in size on the Canadian side of the border and 2,000 hectares on the United States side. According to local media reports, the order was issued on Saturday evening for 732 properties in and around Osoyoos. The orders also cover an area north of the border to the intersection of Highway 97 and Highway 3, as well as west and north along Highway 3. Record-breaking wildfires in Canada A third of all the fires currently raging in Canada are in British Columbia amid the country’s worst wildfire season on record. The Canadian province currently has 368 active fires out of the 990 fires which are currently reported to be ravaging Canada. At least 613 of these wildfires are considered out of control.
