Leon Black, the billionaire co-founder of private equity firm Apollo Global Management Inc, was sued on Monday by a woman who said he raped her two decades ago in the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein's Manhattan mansion.

Cheri Pierson said she had been a cash-strapped single mother who had already given Epstein five massages for $300 each, when the financier arranged in the spring of 2002 for her to massage Black for $300.

She said Black, who was eight inches taller and weighed more than twice as much, without her consent physically overwhelmed her and caused "excruciating pain" in their encounter on the third floor of Epstein's home.

Susan Estrich, a lawyer for Black, called Pierson's lawsuit "categorically false and part of a scheme to extort money from Mr. Black by threatening to destroy his reputation....We intend to defeat these baseless claims."

Pierson's lawsuit in a New York state court in Manhattan seeks unspecified damages from Black for sexual assault and intentional infliction of emotional distress, and from Epstein's estate for negligence.

Her law firm Wigdor LLP also represents Guzel Ganieva, a former Russian model who in June 2021 sued Black for defamation, saying he falsely claimed she tried to extort him after accusing him of rape.

In a Nov. 19 letter to the Wigdor firm, Estrich said: "Mr. Black never sexually assaulted anyone anywhere at any time." She also said Black may bring defamation claims or seek sanctions if Pierson sued.

Four US military officers promoted in Himalayas during Indo-US drills

The Pentagon is considering a Boeing proposal to supply Ukraine with cheap, small precision bombs fitted onto abundantly available rockets, allowing Kyiv to strike far behind Russian lines as the West struggles to meet demand for more arms.

U.S. and allied military inventories are shrinking, and Ukraine faces an increasing need for more sophisticated weapons as the war drags on. Boeing's proposed system, dubbed Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bomb (GLSDB), is one of about a half-dozen plans for getting new munitions into production for Ukraine and America's Eastern European allies, industry sources said.

GLSDB could be delivered as early as spring 2023, according to a document reviewed by Reuters and three people familiar with the plan. It combines the GBU-39 Small Diameter Bomb (SDB) with the M26 rocket motor, both of which are common in U.S. inventories.

Doug Bush, the U.S. Army's chief weapons buyer, told reporters at the Pentagon last week the Army was also looking at accelerating production of 155 millimeter artillery shells - currently only manufactured at government facilities - by allowing defense contractors to build them.

The invasion of Ukraine drove up demand for American-made weapons and ammunition, while U.S. allies in Eastern Europe are "putting a lot of orders," in for a range of arms as they supply Ukraine, Bush added.

"It's about getting quantity at a cheap cost," said Tom Karako, a weapons and security expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. He said falling U.S. inventories help explain the rush to get more arms now, saying stockpiles are "getting low relative to the levels we like to keep on hand and certainly to the levels we're going to need to deter a China conflict."

Karako also noted that the U.S. exit from Afghanistan left lots of air-dropped bombs available. They cannot be easily used with Ukrainian aircraft, but "in today's context we should be looking for innovative ways to convert them to standoff capability."

Although a handful of GLSDB units have already been made, there are many logistical obstacles to formal procurement. The Boeing plan requires a price discovery waiver, exempting the contractor from an in-depth review that ensures the Pentagon is getting the best deal possible. Any arrangement would also require at least six suppliers to expedite shipments of their parts and services to produce the weapon quickly.

A Boeing spokesperson declined to comment. Pentagon spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Tim Gorman declined to comment on providing any "specific capability" to Ukraine, but said the U.S. and its allies "identify and consider the most appropriate systems" that would help Kyiv.

Although the United States has rebuffed requests for the 185-mile (297km) range ATACMS missile, the GLSDB's 94-mile (150km) range would allow Ukraine to hit valuable military targets that have been out of reach and help it continue pressing its counterattacks by disrupting Russian rear areas.

GLSDB is made jointly by SAAB AB (SAABb.ST) and Boeing Co (BA.N) and has been in development since 2019, well before the invasion, which Russia calls a "special operation". In October, SAAB chief executive Micael Johansson said of the GLSDB: "We are imminently shortly expecting contracts on that."

According to the document - a Boeing proposal to U.S. European Command (EUCOM), which is overseeing weapons headed to Ukraine - the main components of the GLSDB would come from current U.S. stores.

The M26 rocket motor is relatively abundant, and the GBU-39 costs about $40,000 each, making the completed GLSDB inexpensive and its main components readily available. Although arms manufacturers are struggling with demand, those factors make it possible to yield weapons by early 2023, albeit at a low rate of production.

GLSDB is GPS-guided, can defeat some electronic jamming, is usable in all weather conditions, and can be used against armored vehicles, according to SAAB's website. The GBU-39 - which would function as the GLSDB's warhead - has small, folding wings that allow it to glide more than 100km if dropped from an aircraft and targets as small as 3 feet in diameter.

INDUSTRY MOTIVATION

At a production plant in rural Arkansas, Lockheed Martin is redoubling efforts to meet surging demand for mobile rocket launchers known as HIMARS, which have been successful in hitting Russian supply lines, command posts and even individual tanks. The No. 1 U.S. defense contractor is working through supply chain issues and labor shortages to double production to 96 launchers a year.

Lockheed Martin has posted more than 15 jobs related to the production of HIMARS, including supply chain quality engineers, purchasing analysts, and testing engineers, according to its website.

"We've made investments in terms of infrastructure in the factory where we build HIMARS," said Becky Withrow, a sales leader at Lockheed Martin's missile unit.

Despite the increase in demand, Lockheed Martin's chief financial officer told Reuters in July that he did not expect significant Ukraine-induced revenue until 2024 or beyond. The CFO of Raytheon Corp (RTX.N), another major U.S. defense contractor, echoed that timeline in an interview with Reuters this summer.

HIMARS fires Guided Multiple Rocket Launch System missiles (GMLRS), which are GPS-guided rounds with 200-pound (90kg) warheads. Lockheed Martin make about 4,600 of the missiles per year; more than 5,000 have been sent to Ukraine so far, according to a Reuters analysis. The U.S. has not disclosed how many GMLRS rounds have been supplied to Ukraine.

Repurposing weapons for regular military use is not a new tactic. The NASAMS anti-aircraft system, developed by Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace and Raytheon, uses AIM-120 missiles - originally meant to be fired from fighter jets at other aircraft. Another weapon, the Joint-Direct Attack Munition (JDAM), ubiquitous in U.S. inventories, is a standard unguided bomb that has been fitted with fins and a GPS guidance system.

It appears to be the ‘layoff season’ in the United States, as a Mississippi-based furniture company abruptly fired all of its 2,700 of its employees ahead of Thanksgiving, according to multiple media reports. Employees were reportedly sent an email or a text message asking them to not come to work the next day.

“At the instruction of the board of directors…we regret to inform you that due to unforeseen business circumstances, the company has been forced to make the difficult decision to terminate the employment of all its employees, effective immediately, on November 21,” said the United Furniture Industries (UFI), in one of the messages sent to workers, reported the New York Post.

However, the “over-the-road drivers” that were out of delivery were an exception to the immediate termination and were told that they will be paid for the rest of the week but they should “return equipment, inventory and delivery documents,” immediately, said the New York post citing the memo.

Multiple people were shot, on Saturday evening, in the United States city of Atlanta in Georgia. Police officials in a press conference following the incident said that they are in the midst of investigating an incident where one person was killed and five others sustained injuries after being shot.

The violence took place on Market Street near Atlantic Station, in downtown Atlanta around 8:00 pm (local time), said Lieutenant Germaine Dearlove, the Atlanta Police Homicide Commander while addressing the media. According to media reports, the police had barricaded the area near 17th Street and 37 Market Street in the city.

The incident was preceded by a dispute between a “group of juveniles” which “escalated into gunfire”, said Dearlove. He added, “They were removed for unruly behaviour and also curfew violations for Atlantic Station”.

There is a possibility of more than one shooting, in this case, said the police. The one deceased was identified as a male, while the victims were taken to the hospital, they added. While no other information about the victims or potential suspects was disclosed, the police said that those involved in the violence are believed to be aged between 15-21 years.

Notably, the Atlantic Station had a 3:00 pm curfew for people under the age of 18 after which they had been accompanied by either their parents or guardians, said their official website. While “juvenile groups” of more than four “will be dispersed”, it added.

“Currently homicide investigators are on scene working to establish a lead on the case and also suspect information and also identify involved parties,” Dearlove told the press. Furthermore, witnesses in Atlanta also told NBC that they heard many as 30 rounds of gunshots.

Multiple people shot in US city Atlanta, at least one dead, five injured: Police

Venezuela's government and opposition have asked the United Nations to manage a fund for billions of dollars now held in foreign banks, which will be gradually unfrozen to combat a humanitarian crisis in the oil-rich nation, delegates announced in Mexico City on Saturday.

Sources told Reuters last month the frozen funds amount to more than $3 billion.

The money, held in Venezuelan-owned accounts overseas, was frozen by US and European banks after the United States ramped up sanctions under the administration of President Donald Trump, designed to pressure President Nicolas Maduro to take steps toward free elections.

Talks between Maduro's government and its political opponents resumed in Mexico City on Saturday, mediated by Norway, after being on ice for more than a year.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken welcomed the talks as "an important step toward restoring democracy to Venezuelans.

"We will look to the parties to achieve lasting agreements that set the course for free and fair presidential elections in 2024," he said on Twitter.

Maduro also posted a statement on Twitter, saying: "We will always strive for dialogue with all Venezuelan society. We continue to take important steps for the well-being of our country."

Following the announcement for an UN-administered fund, the US Treasury Department issued a license for Chevron, the second largest US oil company, to expand operations in Venezuela, allowing it to import Venezuelan crude into the United States.

The government's delegation was led by congressional leader Jorge Rodriguez of Venezuela's ruling United Socialist Party (PSUV), and the opposition group was headed by politician Gerardo Blyde.

Maduro had said the aim of the talks was to recover the "kidnapped" resources for public investment: "Then we will see what other issues can be discussed."

The funds are set to help stabilize the country's electric grid, improve education infrastructure and deal with the impact of this year's deadly rains and flooding.

"This agreement provides the template for how further progress can be secured," the European Union said in a statement.

More than 7.1 million Venezuelans have left their country according to UN estimates this year, many migrating to other Latin American countries or the United States, as Venezuela battles high inflation, and food and medicine shortages. More than half of Venezuelan migrants do not have access to three meals a day, UN estimates showed.

In Venezuela, a survey by local universities this year showed some 78 per cent of the population was worried about lack of food, compared with 88 per cent in 2021.

Some Venezuelan and US critics raised concerns the liquidity injection could boost Maduro's credentials before the country's 2024 elections.

Amid four-decade-high inflation in the United States, the country’s online shoppers set a record with purchases worth at least $9.12 billion, said a report by Adobe Inc’s product for data and insights Adobe Analytics. On the other hand, the retail stores witnessed less than usual crowds for the Black Friday sale.

The report by Adobe which tracks online marketing and web analytics said that online purchases were up by 2.3 per cent, year over year, starting the day after Thanksgiving. Adobe Analytics has access to data covering purchases at 85 per cent of the top 100 retailers across the US. The $9.12 billion is an increase from $8.92 billion last year and in 2020 it was at $9.03 billion, said the report.

Adobe also said that the largest contributor to this figure was electronics as online sales surged by 221 per cent since October for gadgets including Apple MacBooks and watches, Xbox, smartphones and so on. Additionally, toys were also among the popular categories for shoppers which accounted for a 285 per cent increase, and exercising equipment saw a surge of over 200 per cent when compared to an average day in October.

Over the weekend, Adobe said that they expect that shoppers will spend over $4 million on both days while they expect the total sales for Cyber Monday to reach at least $11 billion. More than 165 million Americans are expected to shop between Thanksgiving day and Cyber Monday which is the National Retail Federation’s highest estimate since it began tracking the data five years ago. A United States patrol base was attacked by two rockets targeted at the coalition forces in Syria, said a statement by the US central command (CENTCOM), on Friday. The base was located in Al-Shaddadi and the attack took place at approximately 10:31 pm (local time in Syria), it added. This comes amid the recent escalation and a wave of rocket attacks along the Syria-Turkiye border.

“The attack resulted in no injuries or damage to the base or coalition property,” said the statement by CENTCOM. The Kurdish People’s Protection Units or the YPG-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have been Washington’s key ally in the fight against ISIL (ISIS) group in the region. The SDF, after the rocket attacks, visited the origin site and found a third unfired rocket, said the officials, without disclosing who was behind the firing.

Meanwhile, the recent escalation in the region is marked by an increase in the number of air raids and rocket attacks between Syria-Turkiye following the bombing in Istanbul on November 13. The bombing had reportedly killed six people and injured 80, for which Ankara blames the Kurdish groups in Syria.

Subsequently, Turkiye said that it had launched airstrikes on nearly 90 targets which were destroyed by its warplanes. According to authorities in Ankara, they killed several people who they refer to as “terrorists”. At least 31 people were killed in these strikes, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a monitoring group.

On the other hand, suspected Kurdish militants in Syria fired rockets across the border killing at least two people and injuring approximately 10 people, said officials in Turkiye last week. “Attacks of this kind place coalition forces and the civilian populace at risk and undermine the hard-earned stability and security of Syria and the region,” said CENTCOM spokesman, Colonel Joe Buccino in a statement.

A United States patrol base was attacked by two rockets targeted at the coalition forces in Syria, said a statement by the US central command (CENTCOM), on Friday.

ALSO READ | At least two people killed, several wounded after rocket strikes by Kurdish militants in Syria: Turkiye Meanwhile, the recent escalation in the region is marked by an increase in the number of air raids and rocket attacks between Syria-Turkiye following the bombing in Istanbul on November 13. The bombing had reportedly killed six people and injured 80, for which Ankara blames the Kurdish groups in Syria. ALSO WATCH | Turkey launches airstrikes over northern Syria Subsequently, Turkiye said that it had launched airstrikes on nearly 90 targets which were destroyed by its warplanes. According to authorities in Ankara, they killed several people who they refer to as “terrorists”. At least 31 people were killed in these strikes, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a monitoring group. ALSO READ | Türkiye launches air raids against Kurdish militants in Syria and Iraq, 31 dead On the other hand, suspected Kurdish militants in Syria fired rockets across the border killing at least two people and injuring approximately 10 people, said officials in Turkiye last week. “Attacks of this kind place coalition forces and the civilian populace at risk and undermine the hard-earned stability and security of Syria and the region,” said CENTCOM spokesman, Colonel Joe Buccino in a statement. ‘No injures or damage’: US military after rocket attack on patrol base in Syria

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced on Friday that it is now monitoring a new COVID-19 variant of concern in the United States called XBB, which is now thought to account for 3.1 per cent of all new infections in the country.

As reported by CBC News, the Northeast has seen the most growth in the strain's prevalence thus far.

According to the CDC's "Nowcast" for this week, more than 5 per cent of infections in the areas spanning New Jersey through Maine are connected to XBB.

A significant portion of illnesses in various South Asian nations are caused by XBB, which has also become more prevalent among arriving foreign travellers and among reported virus sequences from around the world.

The CDC provided early estimates earlier this month that suggested XBB may be potentially doubling in percentage every 12 days. That might move more quickly than the BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 varieties that are now prevailing in the nation.

Top COVID officials and specialists for the Biden administration, however, assert that they do not believe XBB will present a fresh threat on the same magnitude as when the Omicron variant initially surfaced a year ago.

A number of new lineages, including XBB, have replaced the Omicron variant siblings BA.4 and BA.5, which were responsible for a spike in cases throughout the summer. The CDC reports that as of this week, BA.4 has all but vanished and BA.5 has decreased to less than 1 in 5 new infections countrywide.

The US Department of Justice has asked Mike Pence, former vice president to testify in its investigation of former US President Donald Trump's attempt to overturn 2020 presidential election results.

As per media reports, Pence in August said that he'll consider the request to appear as a witness as it's a criminal investigation. Later, during his interview with CBS News last week, the former vice president accused the January 06 committee of being "partisan." When asked, whether he'll voluntarily testify for the investigation, he said, "I'm closing door on that."

He said, "The objection isn't to the existence of rankings. It is not about wanting to be ranked higher. Yale's number one. It didn't withdraw because it wants to be better than number one. This isn't about wanting a higher ranking. It's wanting to have rankings that are based on the right metrics.”
