Despite high inflation and a sluggish economy, US firms continued to hire steadily in the month of November.
According to data released by the Labor Department on Friday, the economy added 263,000 jobs as the unemployment rate stood at 3.7 per cent, which is close to a 53-year low. The number of employment added in November was somewhat lower than the 284,000 jobs added in October. Even though borrowing costs have increased and inflation has skyrocketed, the US labour market has consistently added thousands of jobs each month. Comparing November to the same month last year, the average hourly salary increased by 5.1 per cent.

As per Fed Chair Jerome Powell, inflation was soaring too rapidly for the central bank to immediately reduce employment and wages. To force inflation back toward its 2 per cent annual objective, the Fed increased its benchmark rate from close to zero in March to about four per cent. US families have benefited from consistent hiring and growing wages as consumer spending increased at a solid rate in October after accounting for inflation.

The US economy increased at a swift 2.9 per cent annual pace in the most recent quarter after contracting in the first half of the year. Along with consumer spending strength, a surge in exports also contributed to growth.

Along with tech powerhouses like Amazon, Meta, and Twitter announcing job layoffs, small organisations like DoorDash, Redfin, Best Buy, and the Gap have also said they will lay off staff.

A gauge of industrial activity fell to a level in November that showed the manufacturing sector may be declining for the first time since May 2020.

US hiring remains robust in November; adds 263,000 new jobs despite soaring inflation

Alex Jones, a far-right US conspiracy theorist who has been ordered to pay up to $1.5 billion to the families of Sandy Hook school massacre victims, filed for bankruptcy on Friday. Jones, who falsely asserted for years that the 2012 massacre was fake, submitted a Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition to a Texas court. He stated in the petition that he had obligations of between $1 billion and $10 billion and assets valued between $1 million and $10 million. Jones, the founder of the website InfoWars and the broadcaster of a well-known radio programme, has been held responsible for defamation in a number of cases brought by the family members of the victims of the Newtown, Connecticut tragedy that left 20 children and six teachers dead.

In October, a Connecticut jury decided to pay $965 million to the families of the eight Sandy Hook victims as well as to the FBI agent who had sued Jones for slander. Later, the trial's judge added an extra $473 million in punitive damages.

In a separate trial, a jury in Texas found Jones liable for the death of a couple's six-year-old son by the 20-year-old shooter who carried out the Sandy Hook massacre.

A second Jones-owned company, Free Speech Systems, filed for bankruptcy in July after InfoWars filed for bankruptcy in April. A debtor may restructure their assets in a Chapter 11 bankruptcy case with the assistance of the court.

Jones cited his debts to a number of the Sandy Hook families in the personal bankruptcy petition, where he also claimed that he has between 50 and 99 creditors.

The Sandy Hook tragedy was "manufactured" by pro-gun control activists, according to Jones, who also claimed that the parents were "crisis actors" on his programme for years. However, Jones has subsequently conceded that it was "100 per cent genuine."

However, this would not apply to deposed party leaders V K Sasikala and her nephew TTV Dhinakaran and they would never be re-inducted, senior AIADMK leader and state Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar told reporters here.

O Raja was re-inducted into the party only after he had expressed regret for his action, Jayakumar said but refused to divulge what kind of ‘anti-party activity’ actually prompted the leadership to sack him.

“If a sacked party functionary gives a (regret) letter, what the party will do– it will consider his regret and the request for re-induction,” he told reporters here.

He was responding to questions on Raja returning to the party fold in just about five days after his expulsion last week and said such things had happened during the time of the late AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa also.

Raja was re-inducted in line with the “forget and forgive policy,” Jayakumar added.

“This is not a big issue. He expressed regret and the party took a decision (accordingly to take him back),” the minister said.

Raja was removed from all posts and the AIADMK’s primary membership by AIADMK coordinator Panneerselvam and the joint coordinator, chief minister K Palaniswami, on December 19 for “going against the party’s policies and bringing disrepute to it.”

However, Raja was re-admitted Monday after he expressed regret for his action in person and through a letter, and requested that he be re-inducted into the party.

Asked if such a yardstick applied for Sasikala and her nephew Dhinakaran, Jayakumar replied in the negative.

“Anyone other than these two, if they express regret, will be taken back,” he said.

The AIADMK has already made it clear that even those siding with Dhinakaran post his fallout with chief minister Palaniswami last year, were welcome to return to the AIADMK, but the leader was not welcome.

Post his fallout, Dhinakaran had floated the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam.

United States President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron vowed Thursday to coordinate on the "challenge" of China and called for stability on the Taiwan Strait. "The United States and France will continue to coordinate on our concerns regarding China's challenge to the rules-based international order, including respect for human rights, and to work together with China on important global issues like climate change," said a joint statement issued by the White House.

As the guest of honour for the first-ever red, white, and blue-themed White House state dinner, French President Emmanuel Macron will be served butter-poached Maine lobster, beef with shallot marmalade, and an American cheese trio on Thursday. Roasted pears, creme fraiche ice cream, and orange chiffon cake will be served for dessert. The White House, together with first lady Jill Biden, planned the sumptuous dinner in order to showcase the bond between America and its longest friend, France. This included everything from the meal to the entertainment to the table decorations and other finishing touches. The United States reserves a state dinner, a high diplomatic honour, for its closest friends.

“The design of this dinner was inspired by the shared colours of our flags, red white and blue, and our common values, liberty and democracy, equality and fellowship,” Biden said. “These form the bedrock upon which our enduring friendship was built.”

The first state dinner to be held at the White House since 2019 will be "a statement of welcome and friendship, a means to connect via a language that transcends words," according to Biden. She gave a quick speech in the preview area before leaving without taking any questions from the media.

The Bidens place a priority on "making visitors feel comfortable and at home," according to Carlos Elizondo, the White House's social secretary, who has served the couple for more than 10 years.

Around 300 people are anticipated at the opulent, black-tie dinner party, which will take place under a heated tent on the South Lawn. They will be seated at tables that are a combination of square and rectangles, draped in dark blue silk tablecloths, and embellished with red candles and bouquets of red, white, and blue flowers, including roses and irises, the national flower of France.

“These form the bedrock upon which our enduring friendship was built.” First lady Jill Biden, center, accompanied by White House social secretary Carlos Elizondo, fourth from left, White House executive chef Cris Comerford, third from left, and White House executive pastry chef Susie Morrison, second from left, speaks during a media preview for the State Dinner with President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron in the State Dining Room of the White House in Washington, Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2022. Photo credits: AP The first lady claimed she was managing the meal the same way her mother did when she was a child and dining with her family. "Even if we were merely having fish sticks from the freezer," her mother said, she still took out the china, fresh flowers, and lighted candles. French President Emmanuel Macron, currently on a US visit, criticised subsidies under its Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) as 'super aggressive.' Macron addressed lawmakers from both political parties in the US. Macron, who arrived in the US for a state visit on Tursday (November 29), will also question US President Joe Biden over the subsidies over which the European Union is not very happy. This is Macron's second state visit to US after taking office.

"This is super aggressive for our business people," Macron said as per AFP.

The White House touts the IRA legislation as a groundbreaking effort to reignite US manufacturing and promote renewable technologies, but European Union governments are crying foul, threatening to launch a trade war by subsidising their own green economy sector.

Macron's blunt assessment, saying he just wanted "to be respected as a good friend," tore some of the veneer off a carefully choreographed state visit intended to celebrate historic US-French ties -- and also tackle the trickier parts of the US-EU transatlantic alliance.

"I don't want to become a market to sell American products because I have exactly the same products as you," said Macron, stressing that France had its own middle class in need of employment.

"And the consequence of the IRA is that you will perhaps fix your issue but you will increase my problem. I'm sorry to be so straightforward," he said.

Despite Macron's apparent combative tone, his visit to US is also being seen as an effort to mend ties between the two powers which reached a historic low after US and UK torpedoed a multi-billion dollar deal between France and Australia to strike their own to provide the latter with nuclear submarines.

After Macron's comments, the White House appeared to be in business as usual mode as it underlined that the state visit was about two presidents' "warm relationship."

US advances in the clean energy economy will help Europeans too, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said. The IRA "presents significant opportunities for European firms as well as benefits to EU energy security. This is not a zero sum game."

In a speech later at the French embassy, Macron insisted on the subsidies issue and said they could become a real sticking point in US relations with Europe.

On a state visit, Macron blasts US law as 'super aggressive' for European businesses

The US House of Representatives on Wednesday (November 30) approved a bill to block a potentially crippling railroad strike. The bill also has provisions for mandatory paid sick leave for rail workers. The bill was approved with 290 votes for and 137 votes against. The House separately voted 221 to 207, to give seven days of paid sick leave to railroad employees.

But it faces an uncertain fate in the Senate. Democrats and some Republicans have expressed outrage over the lack of paid short-term sick leave for railroad workers. It was feared that a rail strike could begin as early as December 9.

If a rail strike indeed takes place, it would freeze almost 30 per cent of US cargo shipments by weight. It may also increase the already high inflation. It will cost the economy $2 billion per day.

After the vote, President Joe Biden called on the Senate to act "urgently."

Railroads and the US Chamber of Commerce oppose amending the contract deal that was struck in September largely on the recommendations of an emergency board appointed by Biden.

The influential business lobby group said the sick leave, if passed and signed into law, "would impose an unworkable, one-sided modification to a labor agreement."

Biden on Monday (November 28) praised the proposed contract that includes a 24% compounded pay increase over five years and five annual $1,000 lump-sum payments, and had asked Congress to impose the agreement without any modifications.

There are no paid short-term sick days under the tentative deal after unions asked for 15 and railroads settled on one personal day.

Association of American Railroads Chief Executive Ian Jefferies said House action on sick leave could undermine future collective bargaining and argued the unions have historically bargained for higher overall wages and a more generous long-term leave policy.

Eight of 12 unions have ratified the deal. But some labor leaders have criticized Biden for asking Congress to impose a contract that workers in four unions have rejected over its lack of paid sick leave.

Russia Ukraine War: NATO sends $40 bn in aid to Ukraine as it seeks more weapons from West

Sergei Ryabkov, Russia's deputy foreign minister, stated on Tuesday that Moscow is attempting to convince the United States that the risks associated with Washington's expanding engagement in the Ukraine war are increasing.

Moscow has frequently protested that Western military assistance to Ukraine is prolonging the crisis, which is now in its 10th month and putting Russia and the West at risk of a direct conflict.

Ryabkov was reported by the news agency Interfax as saying, "We are sending signals to the Americans that their line of escalation and ever deeper involvement in this conflict is fraught with dire consequences. The risks are growing."

Following what they claim was Moscow's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine on February 24, the continued occupation of Ukrainian land, and veiled nuclear threats, Kyiv and the West blame Russia for any future escalation.

Ryabkov was quoted as adding that although Washington and Moscow "periodically exchange signals," there is no conversation between the two.

According to video footage, which was verified by AFP, the police clashed with protesters in the city of Guangzhou. The video showed that security personnel in hazmat suits were present in the city’s Haizhu district on Tuesday and screams of people could be heard in the background. It also showed objects being thrown at the police and many people were detained by the authorities.

A 16-year-old Pennsylvania boy reportedly admitted through Instagram video chat of murdering a 13-year-old girl. After he was taken into custody, he informed police that "it was an accident," read the criminal complaint. The incident took place in Bensalem, Pennsylvania. Police on Friday afternoon was alerted by a girl that she reportedly received a video call and text messages from Joshua Cooper. The girl said that in an Instagram video chat, Cooper told her that he had killed someone. Cooper also sought help from the girl for disposing the body, the complaint said.

When police arrived at Cooper's house in response to the report of the video chat, they observed a young guy sprinting out from the rear of the house who they suspect to be Cooper. Police found the 13-year-old victim inside the home with a "large caliber" gunshot wound to her chest, according to the complaint. The authorities said the girl's family later recognised the victim based on the jewellery she was wearing.

Later, police found and apprehended Cooper. The complaint claims that the suspect was making "unsolicited utterances" as he was being taken into custody. Cooper was saying “sorry” and that he is “going to jail for the rest of his life.” However, Cooper was denied bail on several adult charges which includes criminal homicide. The 16 years old was sent to a juvenile detention centre, according to a police statement, reported CNN.

According to the complaint, Cooper during an interview with detectives reportedly admitted to viewing a Netflix series with the victim in his house. The paper said that the suspect claimed to have been in a previous relationship with the victim. Additionally, according to the complaint, Cooper said that he had accessed his father's safe earlier that day and opened it by replacing the batteries that his father had taken out, rendering the combination lock unoperational. The document stated that he removed, rearranged, and replaced the weapons that were in the safe.

Cooper and his mother reportedly "terminated" the investigators' interview with them before it was finished. According to the Bucks County District Attorney's Office, Cooper's next court date is December 7.

All's well that ends well. This phrase encapsulates what occurred to Andrew and Kristy Mackenzie following that tragic day when a motorcycle struck the bike they were riding, throwing them around 60 feet away. The couple, their youngest daughter, and her family were up to celebrate Father's Day in Grottoes, Virginia, on their four-wheeler trip, and they were all there to spend some quality time together. Around 3:30 p.m., after the fun was over, the pair hopped on Andrew's motocycle and rode home. Turning to face her granddaughter and daughter, Kristy waved.
