According to a report by the New York Post, her two children, 26-year-old Victoria Heuermann and 33-year-old, Christopher Sheridan were also present, during the visit on Thursday. The alleged murderer’s wife was said to have been escorted by a man believed to be a detective.

The property was handed back over to the family after a large-scale police search, which lasted over 10 days, ended. Rex lived in the house with his wife and children for 30 years. He reportedly purchased the property in 1994 for $170,000.&nbsp;

He was arrested in connection to the Gilgo Four, referring to the four women found dead in 2010.&nbsp;

Led by Congressmen Raja Krishnamoorthi and Larry Bucshon, the bipartisan group of 56 lawmakers sent a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas requesting the administration take executive action to provide relief to high-skilled employment-based visa holders.

In their letter, the US lawmakers also appealed to the administration to mark all dates for filing of employment-based visa applications in the Bureau of Consular Affairs' published Employment-Based Visa Bulletin as "current".

A Green Card, known officially as a Permanent Resident Card, is a document issued to immigrants to the US as evidence that the bearer has been granted the privilege of residing permanently.

The current situation surrounding the seven per cent country cap on employment-based Green Card allocation is causing severe repercussions, particularly for countries such as India, where the backlog has reached an astonishing 195 years, said Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies (FIIDS USA) in a separate appeal to the US President Joe Biden.

This backlog disproportionately affects Indian tech professionals, who constitute a significant portion of the highly skilled STEM talent and US-educated graduates, playing a crucial role in maintaining the United States' competitive edge in the technology industries, it said.

This year, the FIIDS has made several efforts in addressing the concerns of the immigrant Indian community, in particular those related to Green Card and H-1B visas.

"We started efforts to get relief to Indian H-1Bs who are stuck in Green Card processing. We launched a change petition, we are approaching representatives, various other organisations and influencers. We are reaching out to the Bureau of consular services in the state department as well as the USCIS in the DHS to take administrative action to make the priority dates current for green card applicants," Khanderao Kand from FIIDS said.

Technology companies depend on it to hire tens of thousands of employees each year from countries like India and China.

The lawmakers in their letter said that marking all dates as "current" would allow employment-based applications to be filed regardless of applicants' country-based priority date. This would provide relief to thousands of individuals attempting to legally navigate the US immigration system and could potentially also make some eligible for employment authorisation documents to change jobs, start businesses, and travel abroad to visit family without penalty, it said.

Without this administrative action, which was also used during the administration of President George W Bush, individuals are left in a constant state of limbo and, in some cases, are punished for utilising a pathway of legal immigration by being forced to stay with one company or organisation due to their Green Card status, they said in the letter.

"I'm proud to join my colleagues in urging the Biden administration to address bureaucratic delays in our legal immigration system that are holding back our economy while leaving so many families in limbo," Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi said.

"By using its authority under the existing law, the administration can ease this burden while strengthening our economy and helping to create jobs," he said.

Congressman Bucshon said, unfortunately, due to bureaucratic red tape in "our nation's legal immigration system, they are caught in the visa backlog and don't have the flexibility to change jobs, start businesses, and travel abroad without penalty".

"I believe that it's important for the administration to act within the current law to make it easier for these legal immigrants to navigate our immigration system and continue making a positive contribution to our nation and our economy," Bucshon said.

President of Immigration Voice Aman Kapoor said that "this commonsense measure proposed in the letter by Congressmen Krishnamoorthi and Bucshon would be an absolute game changer to provide basic human rights such as the ability to change jobs and travel for nearly one million high skilled immigrants whose status in the US can end at any moment and is entirely dependent upon the whims of their employer".

The entire basis for this problem is a "discriminatory" immigration system that requires Indian nationals to have to wait "200 years for a Green Card while people from 150 other countries have no wait at all", Mr Kapoor said.

"We now call on the Biden administration to do the right thing and heed the call of this rare bipartisan letter and give high-skilled immigrants here for over a decade the same rights to work and travel that people being paroled into the US for the first time just this week have," he said.

"We are no less deserving of basic human rights and fairness than anyone else and we hope the Biden administration will agree," Mr Kapoor said.

Biden urged to make priority dates current for Indian Green Card applicants

The United States will help Australia to produce guided multiple-launch rocket systems by 2025, said the American Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, on Saturday (July 29). The statement comes after the two-day Canberra-Washington meeting which focused on regional security and military cooperation where the officials also pledged to engage with China but also oppose it if needed.

Austin and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken are in the Australian state of Queensland for the annual Australia-US ministerial dialogue (AUSMIN), with their Australian counterparts Defence Minister Richard Marles and Foreign Minister Penny Wong.&nbsp;

“We are pursuing several mutually beneficial initiatives with Australia's defence industry, and these include a commitment to help Australia produce guided multiple launch rocket systems...by 2025,” said Austin, during a press conference.&nbsp;

He added that Washington is also accelerating Canberra’s priority munitions through a streamlined acquisition process.&nbsp;

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), on Friday (July 28) approved the sale of a second opioid overdose reversal drug called RiVive, said the US government agency, in a statement. It was also the first version of over-the-counter naloxone from a nonprofit company which could lead to cheap and even free doses for those in need.

The approval of the prescription-free sale of the second opioid overdose reversal drug, RiVive, will provide patients with another over-the-counter option for emergency treatment of known or suspected opioid overdose.&nbsp;

He added, “The agency has long prioritised access to naloxone products, and we welcome manufacturers of other naloxone products to discuss potential nonprescription development programs with the FDA.”&nbsp;

Approval of RiVive The approval of the prescription-free sale of the second opioid overdose reversal drug, RiVive, will provide patients with another over-the-counter option for emergency treatment of known or suspected opioid overdose. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends quickly administering Narcan – the only over-the-counter FDA-approved option until now – which consists of an active drug called naloxone, a life-saving medication and nasal spray used to counter the overdose effects. US: FDA approves 'RiVive', second over-the-counter opioid overdose reversal drug

On July 13 and 14, Wang Yi, the newly re-appointed Chinese Foreign Minister visited Jakarta to attend the 56th ASEAN Regional Forum and the 13th East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers' Meetings. During these meetings, Wang held several bilateral exchanges, including with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. He also participated in an ‘ASEAN+3’ meeting, with representatives from the ten countries of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), as well as Japan and South Korea. His engagements aimed at assuaging regional anxieties surrounding China’s belligerent rise and its intensifying rivalry with the US. However, his meeting with Blinken said otherwise.

In his speech at the ARF Foreign Ministers’ meeting, Wang presented a three-point proposal for regional security, and in his subsequent meeting with the ASEAN+3 countries, he discussed three ways for the partnership to progress. Both of these comprised his central message to regional countries, which was that China is the right developmental partner for regional countries to embrace, and any contentions pertaining to economic or military security must be addressed without inviting interference from an external actor.

For example, in his introductory speech, Wang stated that the region must promote ‘common’, ‘cooperative’, and ‘universal’ security, which was a reiteration of the primary principles of Xi Jinping’s flagship Global Security Initiative (GSI), and sought to undermine the American security predominance in favour of a China-led model. He also emphasised ‘pragmatic cooperation’ to build mutual trust. To that end, Wang suggested that regional countries find “less sensitive” areas of cooperation, which potentially include counter-piracy, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HA/DR), and climate change, and may fare better in their prospect of building mutual trust. He also emphasised “adherence to inclusiveness;” an emphasis that serves to provide an alternative approach to the US's 'Free and Open' Indo-Pacific concept.

The economic overtone was even more evident in his address to the ASEAN+3 meeting, where he proposed that the member countries should “uphold opening-up and cooperation,” accelerate the regional integration, allow for Hong Kong’s accession to the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), and acknowledge China’s leading role in the construction of “stable, smooth and comparative advantage-based regional production and supply chains.” He also reminded member countries of China’s contributions to the ASEAN Emergency Rice Security Mechanism and Electric Vehicle Ecosystem, while also claiming that China is their best bet in their quest towards poverty alleviation and rural empowerment. The essence of his arguments is two-fold: one is that China is open for business and is seeking increased interlinkedness. The second is that because China has already experimented successfully with policies on food security, EV supply chain management and poverty alleviation, it is now projecting itself as the most appropriate business partner for ASEAN countries to approach – which is also how China understands ‘pragmatic cooperation’.

However, Wang’s message was received with caution and suspicion by ASEAN member countries. The lack of significant progress in deliberations over competing claims in the South China Sea overshadowed any hope for substantive confidence-building. The ARF Foreign Ministers’ meeting witnessed the second reading of the draft of the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea, which has been pending for 20 years, and the issuance of a guideline document on speeding up the negotiations on the CoC. However, the final Chairman’s Statement of the 13th EAS Foreign Ministers’ meeting sounded the warning that any further discussion on the CoC must be undertaken in the spirit of the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Seas, to “reduce tensions and the risk of accidents, misunderstandings, and miscalculation.” Moreover, just a few days before these meetings, the Philippines marked seven years of the award of the Permanent Court of Arbitration ruling against China in 2016, which invited an infuriated response from China. So clearly while there might be greater talk of cooperation, security anxieties and competition remain the dominant motif in the region.

Moreover, the proceedings of the Wang-Blinken meeting on the sidelines of the ARF Foreign Ministers’ meeting also did not yield a lot of confidence, even though it was a positive sign that the two sides were conducting high-level dialogue. During the meeting, Wang highlighted that to mend their relations, the two sides need to resolutely stop “gray rhinos”, properly handle “black swans” and thoroughly remove “tigers blocking the way”.&nbsp;Essentially, his message to the US was that short and long-term high-impact incidents, such as Taiwan-related contingencies or the controversy surrounding the Chinese ‘spy balloon’, need to be managed more “rationally” in order to bring some semblance of stability in the relationship. This also serves as China’s acknowledgment that the relationship is indeed at its lowest point at the current juncture.

Regional countries, especially ASEAN member states, see the bettering of US-China relations as absolutely essential to peace and stability in the region. This sentiment is echoed in Indonesian Foreign Minister Marsudi Retno’s statement at Jakarta, in which she said, “The Indo-Pacific is not a battleground. This region must remain stable.” ASEAN countries also seek diversity in partnerships, and expect China to act in a manner that is necessary to build the mutual trust it vehemently propagates. To that end, the conclusion of the CoC and its implementation in good faith is a necessary factor. And as Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan argued at the meeting, even though political will has been expressed to take the CoC forward, it is a “complicated process,” and it has already been two decades since the DoC was signed as an “interim, stopgap” measure.

Overall, regional countries are looking to maximise economic gains, while great powers like China and the US are looking at regional issues from a largely strategic perspective. It is this dissonance in approach that has created both, a geopolitical dilemma and an opportunity for negotiation for regional countries.

Diwali, celebrated by millions of Americans from various faiths and religions including Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains, should be declared a federal holiday, Congresswoman Grace Meng has said.

Meng, a lawyer-turned-politician, who represents the sixth Congressional District of New York, has introduced the Diwali Day Act in the US House of Representatives, for making Diwali a federal holiday in the country.

“It’s not just about a day off. It is about making sure that people beyond those who celebrate Diwali, truly understand the holiday and the culture and the contributions of the so many people who celebrate Diwali,” Meng told PTI in an interview on Thursday.

As a kid growing up in Queens, New York City, Meng said she always wanted to make sure that US holidays match those of the communities.

“It is important to me as an Asian American that Diwali, which is a holiday that is celebrated by hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers and billions of people literally around the world, that we are able to have this day off,” the 47-year-old Democrat said.

The legislation introduced in May has gained positive traction from her Congressional colleagues.

“We haven’t really heard anything negative. So, in the world of politics and Congress, that is a very positive sign. This piece of legislation is a bipartisan piece of legislation,” she said.

“We have members signing on every week, and so we are excited to keep talking about it and hopefully be able to pass it. We are very heartened by the steps taken by New York State, for example, in making Diwali a New York City school holiday, which is long overdue. We’ve been fighting for about 10 years or over 10 years on that legislation. And so we think that that also provides some momentum for our federal legislation,” Meng said.

Indian Americans, she said, have contributed so much to New York City, New York State, and the US.

Indian Americans comprise one of the largest Asian American populations in this country, and they have provided so many benefits to the US.

“They have contributed so much to our culture to academia, to our economy. And so we want to make sure that we recognise the important contributions and holidays that Indian Americans celebrate,” the Congresswoman said.

Responding to a question on the recent visit of the Prime Minister and his address to the joint session of the Congress, Meng said the speech was well received.

“His presence was received by both sides of the aisle, very bipartisan. We know that there are Indian Americans in both Republican and Democratic districts throughout New York and across the country. Many of our constituents back at home in New York were excited to see him come to Congress and we were able to hear him speak about the strong alliance between India and the United States,” she said.
