President Joe Biden has been adamant that the United States will support Ukraine in its nine-month struggle to fend off an invasion by Russia, but added that it will not fight another world war for Ukraine.

"We will not fight the Third World War for Ukraine," he insisted, reports Reuters.

Therefore, he and his senior team of advisers were thrown into crisis mode when a missile struck a hamlet in Poland close to the Ukraine border on Nov. 15 and there were early suspicions that it was launched by Russia.

If Russia had attacked Poland, the United States and other NATO members would be forced to defend it militarily, which may lead to a world war that everyone wished to avoid.

Aides woke up Biden in the middle of the night in Bali, Indonesia, in the final days of his week-long trip to Asia to inform him that a missile had killed two people in Poland, a U.S. official said.

Officials from Ukraine officially blamed Russia, as did an Associated Press story that has since been amended and cited an unnamed senior U.S. intelligence officer.

The claims caused panic among the government and stock markets. Countries in Eastern Europe reacted violently, and the tension increased.

Initial reports from American sources suggested that Ukraine may have fired the missile to fend against an onslaught of Russian missiles and that it had unintentionally landed in Poland.

The White House and other U.S. agencies made few public statements while they sought confirmation.

"We cannot confirm the reports or any of the details at this time. We will determine what happened and what the appropriate next steps would be," White House spokesperson Adrienne Watson had said.

Nancy Pelosi's early political days

In Baltimore, Maryland, on the East Coast, where her father was briefly mayor, Pelosi grew up in a political household as the youngest of seven children. She attended college in the neighbouring city of Washington, DC, where she later fell in love with and married banker, Paul Pelosi.

Pelosi started out as a homemaker when they initially relocated to Manhattan and San Francisco. Within a six-year span, she gave birth to five children: four daughters and a son.

When Jerry Brown, the governor of California, campaigned for president in 1976, she got active in politics and used her ties to her extended family to help him win the Maryland primary.

She then ascended through the party's ranks, finally rising to the position of chair, and in 1987 she was elected to Congress. In 2001, she narrowly won the election to become the party's vote-counter and second-in-command in the House of Representatives. The next year, she was promoted to minority leader, the post held by the person in charge of the House opposition.

Pelosi at the zenith of her politics

In 2003, Pelosi was one of the most prominent and vocal opponents of the US war in Iraq. When the Democrats took over the House for the first time in 12 years in 2006, this stance was validated and rewarded.

She was chosen by her party to be speaker of the House, making her the first woman in US history to hold that position.

The only position in Congress that is explicitly addressed in the US Constitution is Speaker of the House. It comes next in line after the vice president. With its own balcony overlooking the Washington Monument, its enormous office in the Capitol rotunda emphasises the status of the position.

The dominant party in the House essentially controls the whole legislative process. What legislation is studied and voted on is decided by the speaker, her deputy(s), and the chair(s) of the committee. They pick the topics for discussion and the order in which they will be discussed.

Before the Democratic Party lost control of the lower chamber of Congress, Pelosi was in the position for four years. Despite the loss, Pelosi overcame a number of obstacles within her own party to retake the gavel.

Confronting Donald Trump and more

As speaker of the US House, Nancy Pelosi, a longstanding leader of the Democrats in Washington, was a great strategist who managed America's severe party split while reprimanding an uncontrollable president and guiding historic legislation.

When the US Capitol was attacked in 2021, fans of then-president Donald Trump destroyed her office and yelled "Where's Nancy?" while they vandalised the buildings of Congress.

Nancy Pelosi is one of the most influential women in the male-dominated US Congress and has been at the zenith of US politics for decades. However, Pelosi made the decision to step down as leader of the House Democrats, stating that "a new generation must lead the Democratic caucus." As reported by the BBC, she will remain in the House as a member, representing California's 12th district. Pelosi is the first woman in American history to hold the position, and she has been instrumental in furthering or rather obstructing the agendas of several presidents during her tenure. Her political instincts and acumen have given her the solid footing that she holds in US politics today. WATCH | US: Nancy Pelosi to step down as House Democratic leader, says 'we must boldly move into future' Nancy Pelosi's early political days In Baltimore, Maryland, on the East Coast, where her father was briefly mayor, Pelosi grew up in a political household as the youngest of seven children. In 1993, Pelosi observes President Bill Clinton sign an executive order. In 2001, she narrowly won the election to become the party's vote-counter and second-in-command in the House of Representatives. The next year, she was promoted to minority leader, the post held by the person in charge of the House opposition. Pelosi at the zenith of her politics In 2003, Pelosi was one of the most prominent and vocal opponents of the US war in Iraq. Before the Democratic Party lost control of the lower chamber of Congress, Pelosi was in the position for four years. Despite the loss, Pelosi overcame a number of obstacles within her own party to retake the gavel. Seven Democratic senators warned the Federal Trade Commission in a letter they wrote on Thursday that Twitter, which is now controlled by Elon Musk, was disregarding users' rights and urged the organisation to look into any violations of the consent decree it had signed with Twitter.

Senators Richard Blumenthal and Elizabeth Warren, among other senators, requested that the government consider taking enforcement steps against the business and, as necessary, specific executives.

The lawmakers wrote in a letter to FTC Chair Lina Khan, "Twitter's new Chief Executive Officer, Elon Musk, has taken alarming steps in recent weeks that have undermined the integrity and safety of the platform, and announced new features despite clear warnings those changes would be abused for fraud, scams, and dangerous impersonation."

The first two weeks of the billionaire's ownership of Twitter have been characterised by quick change and mayhem. The previous CEO of Twitter and other senior executives were swiftly ousted, and earlier this month, he laid off half of the company's workers.

A witness who saw a University of Virginia student start fire on a bus returning from a field trip described to authorities how the shooter targeted specific victims, many of whom were football players, shooting one of them while he slept.

The information came to light at the suspect's initial court appearance, which took place on the same day the university made the decision to postpone its Saturday football game due to the fatal shooting.

After being shown a photograph of the shooting defendant, Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., a witness recognised him as the shooter, according to the prosecution.

Three football players died on Sunday night, and one player and another student were injured.

Jones, a former football player, participated in the court proceeding on Wednesday by way of a video link from a nearby jail.

He claimed he would seek a lawyer and choose not to enter a plea to the many accusations he is facing.

In order to represent him while he seeks private legal representation, a judge assigned a public defender and ordered that he be held without bond.

Jones, who will turn 23 on Thursday, reportedly went on a field trip with about 20 other students from the Charlottesville campus on Sunday to watch a play in the nation's capital, approximately 195 kilometres away.

The senior general at the Pentagon said there was a "low probability" of Ukraine forcing Russia militarily to leave the occupied territories, including Crimea, adding that Moscow was still superior to its neighbour in terms of combat power despite suffering few setbacks in the war.

"The probability of a Ukrainian military victory, kicking the Russians out of all of Ukraine to include... Crimea, the probability of that happening anytime soon, is not high militarily," Joint Chiefs Chair General Mark Milley told reporters on Wednesday.

"There may be a political solution where, politically, the Russians withdraw. That's possible," he said, adding that Russia "right now is on its back."

It would be a mistake for China to invade Taiwan

When asked about the possibility of the Chinese invasion of Taiwan, General Mark Milley said, "I think it would be unwise, it would be a political, geopolitical, a strategic mistake, similar to what the strategic mistake that (Russian President Vladimir) Putin has made in Ukraine."

Milley made no mention of an impending attack on the democratically self-governing island.

However, he stated that he thought Taiwan's unification with China was a top priority for President Xi Jinping of China, who had won a historic third term as the nation's paramount leader, was a "rational actor."

The Chinese military would suffer a strategic setback if they launched an attack on Taiwan in the near future, Milley told reporters.

"I think he evaluates things on cost, benefit, and risk, and I think that he would conclude that an attack on Taiwan in the near future would be an excessive amount of risk," he said.

According to Milley, that would halt China's ascent to the position of the world's leading economic and military power.

He said that the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February, which was thwarted by unexpectedly resolute Kyiv defences armed with Western weapons, provided instructive lessons.

He pointed out that since battling the Vietnamese in 1979, the Chinese military had not engaged in combat.

A judge on Wednesday (November 16) sent to jail without parole the man who killed six and injured several when he drove his SUV through a Christmas parade.

The incident took place on November 21, 2021, when Darrell Brooks Jr. 40, drove over the parade in his red Ford Escape in downtown Waukesha. Six were killed including an eight-year-old child. Several others were severely injured.

The judge sentenced him on 76 charges, including six of first-degree intentional homicide and 61 counts of reckless endangerment. Jennifer Dorrow, Waukesha, County Circuit Judge, rejected all arguments from him and his family claiming that his mental illness made him do this, AP reported.

Each homicide carried a mandatory life sentence but no death penalty. The judge concluded 762 years in prison for Brooks. The gallery applauded as Dorrow announced the life sentences.

It was found that on November 21, Brooks left his house in anger after having a fight with his ex-girlfriend.

"Frankly, Mr. Brooks, no one is safe from you,” Dorrow said. “This community can only be safe if you are behind bars for the rest of your life. ... You left a path of destruction, chaos, death, injury and panic as you drove seven or so blocks through the Christmas parade."

However, before the judge handed the life sentences, Brooks claimed that he's been mentally ill since he was a child and that the incident that took place was not intentional. Rambling over his growing up with no father, poor, hungry and physically abused, he said that he has been dealing with illness all his life. In court, his mother and grandmother tried to persuade Dorrow to place Brooks in a mental institution rather than in prison. His grandmother claimed that Brooks had bipolar disorder and whatever that happened was not intentional. His mother, Dawn Woods tried persuading the judge to let Brooks receive treatment in prison.

Dorrow, before handing the sentences, said that she doesn't believe that Brooks is suffering from any mental illness. She said that four psychologists who evaluated him said that he suffers from an antisocial personality but not a mental illness. She added that whatever Brooks did was in anger and rage.

Offering his apologies to all the victims and to their families, Brooks said, " I want you to know that not only am I sorry for what happened, I’m sorry that you could not see what’s truly in my heart,” he said. “That you cannot see the remorse that I have."

A day prior to the hearing, Dorrow spent an entire day listening to the dozens of victims and their families to sentence Brooks maximum possible sentence.
