US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said an announcement on Canada and Mexico tariffs was expected later Wednesday, signaling potential relief for specific sectors such as automobiles, a day after the steep levies took effect.
President Donald Trump's sharp 25 percent tariffs on US imports from Canada and Mexico -- with a lower rate for Canadian energy -- kicked in Tuesday, sending global markets tumbling.
Ottawa swiftly announced retaliatory tariffs, while Mexico City promised countermeasures were to come.
The US president has nominally cited illegal immigration and fentanyl trafficking in imposing the measures, though he frequently mentions trade imbalances when discussing the issue.
Trump is listening to "offers" from the North American neighbors, Lutnick told Bloomberg Television on Wednesday.
He said he expects an announcement to be made Wednesday afternoon.
Lutnick dismissed the possibility of lifting the levies completely, but said Trump is mulling market segments where he could provide temporary relief.
"The president gets to make the decision," Lutnick said. "But our expectation is that it'll be categories."
"It will be 25 percent but it'll be, there will be some categories left out. It could well be autos, could be others as well," he said.
Lutnick maintained, however, that reciprocal tariffs tailored to each US trading partner are still coming on April 2, as promised by Trump.
The levies could affect Mexico and Canada further, addressing their broader trade with the United States, he said.
Trump has vowed "reciprocal tariffs" targeting friend and foe to remedy potential practices deemed as unfair.
While some of these tariffs could come immediately, Lutnick told Bloomberg that others could take "over a month or two to come online."
This week, Trump also inked an order doubling an additional tariff rate on Chinese imports from 10 percent to 20 percent, also over the country's alleged role in illicit fentanyl entering the United States.
The latest US duties pile atop existing ones on various Chinese products.
Beijing hit back swiftly, condemning Washington's "unilateral imposition" of levies and promising 10 percent and 15 percent tariffs on a range of US agricultural imports.
Economists warn that tariff hikes stand to bog down economic growth and add to inflation in the world's biggest economy.
The mounting trade war could complicate Trump's stated aims of bringing cost of living relief to households.

'Trump's tariffs on Canada, Mexico may get some relief', says commerce secretary

CIA Director John Ratcliffe announced on Wednesday (Mar 5) that the US has paused intelligence support and weapons shipments to Ukraine. This comes after the tense White House spat between the US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last week on February 28.
The fallout between Kyiv and Washington was shortly followed by the US freezing military aid to Ukraine amid the ongoing war with Russia for over three years. In addition to that, the US has now paused intelligence sharing with Ukraine.

As Egypt unveiled the Gaza reconstruction plan on Tuesday while hosting an Arab League Summit in Cairo, Israel and the US rejected the proposal, while, the Palestinian militant group Hamas welcomed it.&nbsp;
<h2>Hamas welcomes the plan</h2>
Hamas in a statement welcomed the Arab proposal to rebuild the Gaza Strip under a future PA administration.&nbsp;
"We welcome the plan to rebuild Gaza, and we call for the provision of all the elements needed for its success. We also appreciate Egypt's efforts in preparing to hold an international conference to rebuild Gaza," the Palestinian militant group said in a statement.

The National Security Council spokesperson said President Donald Trump "stands by" his plan to "rebuild Gaza".&nbsp;
Moreover, Israel also rejected Egypt's plan, saying that it "failed to address realities" and accused the PA and the UN Agency for Palestinian refugees UNRWA of "corruption" and "support for terrorism".

The plan consists of three major stages, including interim measures, reconstruction and governance. The first stage would last about six months, however, the other two phases would take place over a combined four to five years.&nbsp;
The Egypt plan aims to reconstruct Gaza, which has been destroyed in the Israel-Hamas war. They further aim to maintain peace and security and reassert the governance of the Palestinian Authority (PA) in the region.&nbsp;

It would take a six-month interim period for the committee of Palestinian technocrats to clear the rubble from Salah al-Din Street, which is the main north-south highway in the Gaza Strip.
Once the roads in the territory get clear, 200,000 temporary housing units would be built to accommodate 1.2 million people and about 60,000 damaged buildings restored.
After the interim measures are completed, it would take another four to five years to build at least 400,000 permanent homes, building Gaza's seaport and international airport.&nbsp;

Moreover, water, a waste system, telecommunication services and electricity would also be restored.
It further calls for the establishment of a Steering and Management Council, which would be a financial fund supporting the interim governing body in Gaza.
Further, Egypt called for a USD 53 billion fund for the reconstruction of Gaza, with the money distributed over three phases. As per the plan, the fund will be sourced from several international sources including the UN and international financial organisation and foreign and private sector investments.&nbsp;

Gaza reconstruction plan: Rejected by Israel and US but backed by Hamas, here's all you need to know

Canada has filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization against the United States over President Donald Trump's dramatic tariff increases, the WTO confirmed on Wednesday.
Late Tuesday, Canadian ambassador to the WTO Nadia Theodore wrote on LinkedIn that "the US decision leaves us with no choice".
She said she had, "on behalf of the government of Canada, requested WTO consultations with the government of the United States in regard to its unjustified tariffs on Canada".
A WTO official confirmed to AFP that "Canada initiated dispute proceedings yesterday against the US at the WTO on the additional tariffs", following a similar complaint filed by Beijing over fresh US levies on Chinese goods.
Shortly after Trump returned to office on January 20 he announced &ndash; and then paused &ndash; blanket 25 percent tariffs on imports from major trading partners Canada and Mexico, accusing them of failing to stop illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
He pushed ahead with them Tuesday, citing a lack of progress on both fronts. And after Canada retaliated, Trump quickly threatened to hit Canada again.&nbsp;

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, however, said later that he thought Trump would "work something out" with Mexico and Canada.
Trump also inked an order Monday to increase a previously imposed 10 percent tariff on China to 20 percent &ndash; piling atop existing levies on various Chinese goods.
Shortly after the tariffs on Canadian goods took effect, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau attacked Washington's "dumb" trade war, and accused Trump of trying to cause the collapse of Canada's economy to make it easier for the United States to annex his country.
In her message, Theodore said she had filed her country's complaint while wearing "my suit from Anishinaabe and Canadian fashion designer Lesley Hampton".&nbsp;
And she signed off with "Elbows up" &ndash; the rallying cry of Canada's national sport hockey.

‘Leaves us with no choice’: Canada files WTO complaint against Trump’s hefty tariffs

US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump" rel="dofollow">Donald Trump</a>'s administration on Wednesday (March 5) announced that it is considering selling hundreds of "non-core" federal properties across the country.&nbsp;
The properties include offices for the Social Security Administration, the Internal Revenue Service and the US Mission to the United Nations.
&ldquo;GSA&rsquo;s decisive action to dispose of non-core assets leverages the private sector, drives improvements for our agency customers, and best serves local communities,&rdquo; the General Services Administration said in a news release, claiming that it could potentially save &ldquo;more than $430 million in annual operating costs.&rdquo;

Initially, a list of 440 "non-core" properties was posted on the GSA website including the FBI headquarters, the department of Justice, Veterans Affairs, Labor and Housing and Urban Development and the Old Post Office where the Trump organisation had a 60-year lease until it sold it to the Waldorf Astoria hotel in 2022.&nbsp;
Later on Tuesday, the list was quickly reduced to 320 properties, with all DC-based properties removed.
Most of the buildings flagged consist primarily of office space and selling them will &ldquo;ensure taxpayers no longer pay for empty and underutilized federal office space," according to the GSA.&nbsp;

US President Donald Trump praises his top adviser, billionaire Elon Musk, for his work leading the so-called Department for Government Efficiency (DOGE), which is tasked with streamlining the federal government.
"Many [scams] have been found out and exposed and swiftly terminated by a group ... headed up by Elon", he says. "We found hundreds of billions of dollars of fraud," Trump adds, before Elon Musk stands to greet Congress to a wave of applause from Republican Party members. Watch to know more!

Trump Praises His Top Adviser, Elon Musk For 'Exposing' Billion Dollar Scams With DOGE

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday night (Mar 4) delivered his first speech at the Congress after reassuming office. His speech was filled with 'thank yous' something the Trump administration is particular about. The president showed gratitude towards Indian-origin FBI Director Kash Patel and applauded him for his work. Bestowing faith on Patel, Trump wants to clean the justice system that was 'turned upside down by radical left lunatics.'
The 78-year-old touted his administration has been working to 'restore fair, equal, and impartial justice'.
"Good luck and thank you, Kash," said Trump as the FBI director received a standing ovation from Republican lawmakers in the house.

The 47th President of America is very particular about expressing gratitude. In a recent meeting with Ukrainian President, both Trump and Vice President JD Vance were seen questioning Zelensky if he had thanked the president enough.
They didn't want no for an answer, but even Zelensky's 'yes' was not convincing them. So while making America great again, this administration will be thanking many.
"In recent years, our justice system has been turned upside down by radical left lunatics. Many jurisdictions virtually seized enforcing the law against dangers, repeat offenders while weaponising law enforcement against political opponents like me. My administration has acted swiftly and decisively to restore fair, equal, and impartial justice under the constitutional rule of law," he said in his speech.

In a press conference on Tuesday (Mar 4), Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called US President Donald Trump&rsquo;s decision to impose tariffs on Canadian goods &ldquo;a very dumb thing to do&rdquo;.
Trudeau said, &ldquo;Now, it&rsquo;s not in my habit to agree with the Wall Street Journal, but Donald, they point out that even though you&rsquo;re a very smart guy, this is a very dumb thing to do. We two friends fighting is exactly what our opponents around the world want to see.&rdquo;

The Canadian PM said that he would challenge the &ldquo;illegal actions&rdquo; by the US at the World Trade Organisation, saying they violate the free trade agreement between the two countries.
<h2>Canada imposes retaliatory tariffs</h2>
Canada has already imposed retaliatory tariffs on $30 billion worth of US goods and threatened to impose more levies on the remaining $125 billion worth of goods in 21 days.
&ldquo;Our tariffs will remain in place until the US tariffs are withdrawn, and not a moment sooner. And should these tariffs not cease, we are in active and ongoing discussions with provinces and territories to pursue several non-tariff measures, measures which will demonstrate that there are no winners in a trade war,&rdquo; the prime minister said.

&ldquo;We have laid out extensive plans, actions, cooperations, including as recently as the past days in Washington, and they have always been very well received, and the numbers bear that out,&rdquo; Trudeau said.
<h2>&lsquo;He wants to see total collapse of Canadian economy&rsquo;</h2>
&ldquo;I think in what President Trump said yesterday, that there is nothing Canada or Mexico can do to avoid these tariffs, underlines very clearly what I think a lot of us have suspected for a long time, that these tariffs are not specifically about fentanyl, even though that is the legal justification he must use to actually move forward with these tariffs.&rdquo;
A day earlier, Trump declared America had no further negotiating space for a trade agreement because of Mexico's inability to stop fentanyl narcotics from entering the United States.

<h2>Warning to Americans</h2>
Warning Americans that they will suffer in the trade war as well, the prime minister said, &ldquo;As American families are going to find out, that&rsquo;s going to hurt people on both sides of the border. Americans will lose jobs, Americans will be paying more for groceries, for gas, for cars, for homes, because we have always done best when we work together.&rdquo;

‘Very dumb thing to do’: Trudeau on US tariffs as he announces retaliatory measures

US President Donald Trump will be addressing a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night (Wednesday, 7.30 am IST) for the first time after assuming office.&nbsp;
However, it will not be a State of the Union speech but will be a joint address to Congress.&nbsp;
As per tradition, the US president's annual televised address is known as the "State of the Union" speech, in which the government's accomplishments in the previous year and its agenda for the upcoming year are announced.
But Trump, on the contrary, is calling it a "Joint Address to Congress".&nbsp;

<h2>What is the State of the Union?&nbsp;</h2>
According to the Constitution, the US president is mandated "from time to time" to "give to the Congress information of the state of the union".&nbsp;
George Washington delivered the first such speech in 1790. Later, some of the presidents in the 19th century delivered written addresses to Congress.&nbsp;
Though there is no specific date mentioned for the address, but it usually happens in the first few months of the year. However, the President's inauguration date is fixed as January 20 as per the Constitution.&nbsp;

The impact of these first-year speeches should be considered to have the same heft as the State of the Union address, according to the American Presidency Project.&nbsp;
Moreover, just like the State of the Union address, the opposing party to the one that occupies the White House gives a brief speech in response.&nbsp;
Notably, this year, it will be delivered by Democratic Sen. Elissa Slotkin of Michigan.

Ukraine war: US vice president sends out message to Zelensky after Friday clash

As US President Donald Trump announced coming into effect the tariffs he imposed against Mexico, Canada, and China, eventually it will be affecting the Americans too, as these nations also imposed retaliatory measures against the US.&nbsp;
Whether in groceries, electronic items, or car dealerships, Americans are going to face a lot of trouble as the ongoing trade war will lead to higher prices of these products in the US.&nbsp;
Trump on Monday officially confirmed his decision to implement 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico starting Tuesday, which will create further trade tensions between the three United States' neighbouring countries and cause substantial market instability.&nbsp;

Now, the extra dab of guacamole on your burrito is going to cost more in the coming days as the prices of Mexican avocadoes, beer, and tequila are likely to rise.&nbsp;
Last month, Trump warned that his new tariffs could cause "some pain".
White House trade adviser, Peter Navarro, in an interview with CNBC on Monday, said that the effect of tariffs on consumer goods would be relatively "small", given the Trump administration's simultaneous plans to deregulate industry, reduce the size of the federal government, and expand energy production.
However, trading data and economic studies have suggested that American consumers are likely to see a hike in prices on a wide range of products, including vegetables, meat, cell phones, and cars.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Because of the combination of these three countries, it&rsquo;s going to be difficult to go down an aisle of a grocery store and not see some sort of inflationary effect,&rdquo; said Jason Miller, a professor of supply chain management at Michigan State University.

<h2>How will grocery prices in US be affected?</h2>
<h3>Fresh produce</h3>
Fresh produce, the maximum of which is imported from Mexico, is one of the first categories that is likely to be affected. The hike in prices is likely to come into effect within a couple of weeks.&nbsp;
These items, including avocados, tomatoes, and strawberries, have a short shelf life. Grocery stores lack substantial inventory, meaning that consumers will quickly find produce that is subject to Trump's tariffs.&nbsp;
<h3>Liquor</h3>
The surge in prices is also going to affect liquor aisles, especially beer and tequila. In 2023, nearly three-quarters of US agricultural imports from Mexico consisted of vegetables, fruits, beverages, and distilled spirits.&nbsp;

<h3>Agricultural products&nbsp;</h3>
The US has been importing a wide range of agricultural products from Canada, including meat and grains.&nbsp;
Moreover, maple syrup would also become even more costlier as Canada accounts for roughly 70 per cent of global maple syrup production. Notably, more than 60 per cent of its maple exports went to the US in 2023.&nbsp;
<h3>Car prices&nbsp;</h3>
The incoming tariffs are also going to affect car prices for Americans. This is because auto manufacturers ship tens of billions of dollars worth of finished vehicles as well as engines, transmissions, and other components.&nbsp;

World: Whether in groceries, electronic items, or car dealerships, Americans are going to face a lot of trouble as the ongoing trade war will cause a hike in prices.

As US President Donald Trump announced coming into effect the tariffs he imposed against Mexico, Canada, and China, eventually it will be affecting the Americans too, as these nations also imposed retaliatory measures against the US. Whether in groceries, electronic items, or car dealerships, Americans are going to face a lot of trouble as the ongoing trade war will lead to higher prices of these products in the US. Trump on Monday officially confirmed his decision to implement 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico starting Tuesday, which will create further trade tensions between the three United States' neighbouring countries and cause substantial market instability. Also read: Trump imposes Canada, Mexico tariffs as trade war fears mount; markets sink Now, the extra dab of guacamole on your burrito is going to cost more in the coming days as the prices of Mexican avocadoes, beer, and tequila are likely to rise. However, trading data and economic studies have suggested that American consumers are likely to see a hike in prices on a wide range of products, including vegetables, meat, cell phones, and cars. “Because of the combination of these three countries, it’s going to be difficult to go down an aisle of a grocery store and not see some sort of inflationary effect,” said Jason Miller, a professor of supply chain management at Michigan State University. Fresh produce Fresh produce, the maximum of which is imported from Mexico, is one of the first categories that is likely to be affected. The hike in prices is likely to come into effect within a couple of weeks. These items, including avocados, tomatoes, and strawberries, have a short shelf life. Grocery stores lack substantial inventory, meaning that consumers will quickly find produce that is subject to Trump's tariffs. Liquor The surge in prices is also going to affect liquor aisles, especially beer and tequila. In 2023, nearly three-quarters of US agricultural imports from Mexico consisted of vegetables, fruits, beverages, and distilled spirits.
