According to two defence officials, the deputy secretary of defence did not even realize that Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin had been hospitalized when she started taking on some of his duties on January 2. Until Thursday, three days after the secretary checked into Walter Reed National Military Medical Center due to complications from an elective surgery, senior leaders, including Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks, the Pentagon's second-in-command, were kept in the dark about Austin's actual location. As previously reported in news, Austin was hospitalized for three days before even the president learned of it.

Chaos unfolded at a synagogue in Brooklyn as Orthodox Jewish men clashed with construction workers attempting to fill an illegally dug tunnel beneath the Chabad Lubavitch World Headquarters. The New York Police Department (NYPD) intervened, leading to the arrest of at least 10 people, as reported by Reuters.

The tunnels, discovered beneath the well-known Chabad Lubavitch World Headquarters in Brooklyn's Crown Heights, posed a threat to the landmark's foundation.

Construction workers arrived to address the situation, leading to a confrontation with members of the Chabad community who opposed the filling of the tunnels.

Protests escalate into clashes with NYPD

As a cement truck attempted to fill the tunnels, protests intensified, resulting in the tearing down of wooden panels from the main synagogue.

Clashes erupted between the protesters and the NYPD, with officers eventually removing the panels to make way for the cement truck. Multiple protesters, who refused to vacate the tunnel, were handcuffed and arrested.

The incident has ignited anger within the Chabad community, prompting calls for action. A legal dispute over the ownership of the complex is already underway, with the Chabad-Lubavitch movement at odds with the synagogue leadership.

In response to the recent approval of the US State Department's $300 million arms sale to Taiwan, China announced on Sunday that it would impose sanctions on five American military manufacturers.

This is based on a Reuters report.

The move adds another layer of complexity to the already strained relations between the two global powers.

China perceives Taiwan as part of its territory, a stance vehemently rejected by Taiwan's democratically elected government.

The impending sanctions were unveiled just days before Taiwan's crucial presidential and parliamentary elections on January 13, which Beijing has framed as a pivotal choice between war and peace.

According to a foreign ministry spokesperson, these sanctions are a direct response to arms deals that "seriously undermine China's sovereignty and security interests, seriously jeopardise peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait".

The focal point of China's discontent lies in the US State Department's green light for selling equipment designed to bolster Taiwan's tactical information systems.

This move has further strained diplomatic ties, fuelling Beijing's suspicion of foreign interference in what it considers a domestic matter.

The targeted companies facing sanctions include BAE Systems Land and Armaments, Alliant Techsystems Operations, AeroVironment, Viasat, and Data Link Solutions.

China's measures will involve freezing the assets of these companies and prohibiting any individuals or entities within its borders from engaging with them.

Two House committees, Judiciary and Oversight, released reports recommending contempt charges against Hunter Biden for his alleged defiance of a subpoena related to the impeachment inquiry into his father, President Joe Biden, as reported by Fox News.

The reports assert that Hunter Biden "must be held accountable for his unlawful actions," marking a continuation of the Republican-led effort to investigate corruption allegations against the Democratic president and his family.

The release of the reports follows a planned move by the committee chairmen to hold markups and vote on resolutions recommending contempt charges against Hunter Biden. This step was expected after the initiation of contempt proceedings last month.

Republicans initiated contempt proceedings when Hunter Biden refused a closed-door deposition, offering instead to testify publicly. The upcoming markups will determine whether the resolutions will proceed to a full House vote. If passed, the matter could be referred to the Department of Justice for potential criminal charges.

An Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-9 MAX faced a mid-air emergency on January 6, minutes after take-off from Portland International Airport. The incident led to an emergency landing in Oregon, raising concerns about the safety of the aircraft.

US aviation authorities investigating the emergency discovered that one of the airplane's doors blew open mid-air. The investigation is now focused on the door plug of the airplane panel that could provide crucial insights into the cause of the incident.

During the emergency, a passerby, Seanathan Bates, found an iPhone on the ground near Barnes Road.

Surprisingly, the device was still in airplane mode, with in-flight activation turned on. The iPhone appeared undamaged, even after surviving a 16,000-foot fall.

Bates shared his discovery on social media platform X, which soon went viral.
