American woman Amber Pearson, tormented by the relentless grip of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), used to wash her hands until they bled. However, a groundbreaking brain implant, originally intended for treating epilepsy, has remarkably transformed her life.

The dual-purpose implant: Targeting OCD and epilepsy

Pearson's journey with the 32-millimetre brain implant began as a solution for her epileptic episodes. During the procedure at Oregon Health and Science University recently, Pearson proposed the innovative idea of incorporating treatment for her OCD by leveraging the implanted device.

Neurosurgeon Ahmed Raslan collaborated with Pearson to study the specific brain activity linked to her OCD, as reported by AFP.

By exposing her to stressors and recording electrical markers, they isolated the signals associated with obsessive behaviour. The implant was then tailored to respond specifically to these signals.

Revolutionary breakthrough

The dual-programme brain implant is a global first, simultaneously addressing epilepsy and OCD. Raslan highlighted the uniqueness of the device, with independent programmes for each condition, a breakthrough that he believes originated from Pearson's own perspective.

Raslan said this groundbreaking approach arose from a patient's insight, defying conventional thinking where devices are typically designed for either OCD or epilepsy, not both.

Wider application under study

A study is underway at the University of Pennsylvania to explore the broader application of this groundbreaking technique. The aim is to extend hope to the approximately 2.5 million Americans grappling with OCD.

Following the 2019 procedure, Pearson faced an eight-month wait before noticeable changes occurred. Over time, the once all-consuming rituals that dominated her daily life began to recede. From hours of handwashing and exhaustive pre-bed checklists, Pearson's rituals now take up a manageable 30 minutes a day.

A powerful 'atmospheric river' storm system is expected to bring life-threatening and damaging flooding, wind, snow and waves to California. Flood watches are issued from Saturday night to Tuesday (Feb 6) in central and southern California due to the upcoming heavy rain, raising concerns about urban flooding.

Extensive rainfall estimates

Forecasts suggest widespread rainfall ranging from three to six inches, with potential spikes of six to 12 inches in south and southwest-facing foothills and mountains. Peak intensity is expected on Sunday and Monday, with rates possibly reaching one inch per hour during the storm's zenith. The prolonged heavy rainfall, spanning three to six hours, heightens the threat of widespread freeway flooding, particularly in densely populated areas.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass issued a stern advisory, urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel, especially on the anticipated peak day, Sunday. The city stands ready with a fully staffed response team and bolstered air resources. The National Weather Service said even conservative rainfall estimates hold potential for causing damaging flooding.

As Israel continues its war against the Hamas militant group in Gaza, the US House panel recommended allocating $17.6 billion in new military assistance to the Jewish nation on Sunday (Feb 4). The billions of dollars in aid will help replenish Israel's missile defence systems, manufacturing artillery and other munitions, and acquiring advanced weapons systems.

Some of these funds will also be used to restock US arms provided to Israel in the wake of the deadly October 7 Hamas attack, which resulted in the killings of over a thousand Israelis.

According to US House Speaker Mike Johnson, the funding bill, presented by the House Appropriations panel, is likely to undergo a vote in the full House next week. Under a 10-year plan initiated in 2016, Israel currently gets an annual $3.8 billion in US military assistance.

Last November, months after the deadly attack by Hamas on Israeli soil, the House passed a Republican plan to provide $14.3 billion in aid to Israel by cutting the funds to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

The upcoming Senate bill is also expected to encompass proposals to tackle the issue of US-Mexico border security, which is closely tied to immigration concerns.
