The farming community in both US and Canada is celebrating Groundhog Day today. The centuries-old tradition involves a playground activity featuring their localised groundhog celebrity. In the tradition where folklore dominates science, groundhog delivers weather prediction based on whether or not it sees its own shadow.

This year around, Ontario's Wiarton Willie, Nova Scotia's Shubenacadie Sam and Quebec's Fred la Marmotte groundhogs all reportedly did not see their shadows during the celebration. This indicates that spring-like weather will soon arrive in the region, bringing much-needed relief to the community.

Significance of Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day is part of a tradition rooted in European agricultural life, marking the midpoint between the winter solstice and the spring equinox.

The celebration, often for fun, takes place in Pennsylvania. Gobbler Knob in Punxsutawney becomes an annual playground activity for those who are curious to know the weather prediction by these cute animals. The celebration is free of cost with spectators entering the grounds beginning at 3 am ET.

When was the first Groundhog Day celebrated?

The inaugural Groundhog Day was celebrated on February 2, 1887, in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, according to History.com.

Originating from the Christian tradition of Candlemas, where clergy blessed candles essential for the winter season, this tradition evolved with Germans introducing the practice of using an animal to forecast the weather.

A day after the US State Department pledged the sale of the MQ-9B to India boosting its maritime security through its advanced capabilities, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee has also cleared the deal.

US Senator Ben Cardin, a Democrat from Maryland and the Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee stated "his approval of the sale of MQ-9 drones to India."

However, the deal still requires ratification by the US Congress to be fully approved for sale to India. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) on Thursday (Feb 1) delivered the required certification notifying US Congress of the sale of 31 of these Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The deal involving MQ-9B drones comes at an estimated cost of $3.99 billion.

"The US-India partnership plays a key role in Indo-Pacific stability, including through regional mechanisms such as the Quad. I support deepening our bilateral relationship with India as long as that partnership is based on mutual trust and respect," Cardin said in the statement.

Former professional American football player, actor Carl Weathers, who rose to fame after playing the boxer Apollo Creed in the "Rocky" movies, passed away at the age of 76, his manager confirmed in a statement on Friday (Feb 2).

"We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Carl Weathers. He died peacefully in his sleep," said manager Matt Luber.

"Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life. Through his contributions to film, television, the arts and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations," his family said.

In addition to starring opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1987 movie "Predator," Weathers most recently appeared on television in the Emmy-winning role of "The Mandalorian," a spin-off of "Star Wars."

Weathers shot to stardom after playing Apollo Creed opposite Sylvester Stallone's Rocky Balboa in the hit movies of the 1970s and 1980s.

After US strikes hit Iran-based targets in Iraq and Syria, Baghdad on Saturday (Feb 3) raised strong objection over the retaliatory measures targeting armed groups on its soil. Iraq has characterised the action taken by the US, following the killing of three of its soldiers in a drone strike in Jordan, as a "violation of its sovereignty."

A spokesperson for Iraqi Prime Minister Mohamed Shia al-Sudani General Yehia Rasool said that the actions taken by Washington will have "disastrous consequences for the security and stability of Iraq and the region," AFP news agency reported.

On the other hand, the United States asserted that it had informed the Iraqi government before conducting the Friday (Feb 2) strikes. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby stated, "We did inform the Iraqi government" in advance.

Moreover addressing concerns of a wider spillover of the situation in the Middle East after the strikes that took out dozens of pro-Iran fighters, the White House clarified that the United States is not seeking war with Iran. Kirby reiterated, "We're not looking for a war with Iran."

Meanwhile, Islamic Resistance in Iraq militants targetted al-Harir air base in northern Iraq. The base hosts US forces.

This comes as the US military launched airstrikes in western Iraq and Syria in retaliation of a drone attack that resulted in the deaths of three American soldiers in Jordan. In comments after the US carried out the strikes, President Joe Biden said that the response has begun and would continue at "times and places" determined by the United States.

"The United States does not seek conflict in the Middle East or anywhere else in the world. But let all those who might seek to do us harm know this: If you harm an American, we will respond," Biden added.

Notably, the airstrikes targeted Iran-linked groups, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force, and involved hitting more than 85 targets with over 125 precision munitions.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that the targets included command and control centres, storage facilities for rockets, missiles, and drones, and intelligence facilities used against US and allies in the region.

It is worth noting that Iraq had previously asked for the departure of international troops following a US strike in Baghdad.

After US strikes hit Iran-based targets in Iraq and Syria, Baghdad on Saturday (Feb 3) raised strong objection over the retaliatory measures targeting armed groups on its soil. Iraq has characterised the action taken by the US, following the killing of three of its soldiers in a drone strike in Jordan, as a "violation of its sovereignty." A spokesperson for Iraqi Prime Minister Mohamed Shia al-Sudani General Yehia Rasool said that the actions taken by Washington will have "disastrous consequences for the security and stability of Iraq and the region," AFP news agency reported. Kirby reiterated, "We're not looking for a war with Iran." Meanwhile, Islamic Resistance in Iraq militants targetted al-Harir air base in northern Iraq. The base hosts US forces.
