Canada: Hate-motivated triple stabbing at University of Waterloo, student charged

<p>Fortunately, scientists have now zeroed in on a substance that may be an antidote to 'death cap' mushroom (Amanita phalloides). It is a dye that's called indocyanine green and already has an approval from Food and Drug Administration&nbsp;as it is used for medical diagnostic imaging.</p>

<p>A research team from China's Sun Yat-sen University has shown that indocyanine green can combat the toxin of 'death cap' mushroom and effectively block&nbsp;cell death caused due to it.</p>

<p>To study the toxicity of this mushroom, the scientists took a multi-step approach. They used a genome-wide CRISPR screening on human cell line HAP1 to analyse the destructive impact of the toxin.</p>

<h2><strong>The poison</strong></h2>

<p>When the scientists studied the toxin, they found that biosynthesis of proteins called N-glycans played significant role in cell death. Moreover, it was found that an enzyme called STT3B was a key to the mushroom’s toxicity.</p>

<h2><strong>The antidote</strong></h2>

<p>Indocyanine green, was found as potential inhibitor of STT3B. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The researchers found that two different human cell lines - HAP1 and Hep G2- were more resistant to toxin-induced cell death when they were pre-treated with indocyanine green.</p>

<p>The researchers then carried out tests on live mice. The toxin was injected into them and they were treated with indocyanine green four hours later. The organs of the mice were monitored. It was found that the treated mice had less organ damage and even cell death. They had higher survivability.</p>

<h2><strong>However, there is still a ‘but’</strong></h2>

<p>It may still be a bad idea to eat 'death cap' mushroom though.</p>

<p>It was found that treatment with indocyanine green lost its usefulness after 8-12 hours. By this time, the organ damage reaches an irreversible stage. It was hence suggested that the treatment should be sought as early as possible.</p>

<p>"Overall," the researchers write, "we show that by coupling whole-genome functional genomic characterisation with in silico drug prediction, we can rapidly define and then target medically relevant processes."</p>

<p>The research has been published in Nature Communications and has been reported by ScienceAlert.</p>

World’s deadliest ‘death cap’ mushroom has anti-dote, but still don’t eat it

<p>Graduation is a major event in anyone's life. A person completes a phase of life and enters another. There are of course many who opt for further studies but graduation is like a milestone in people's lives, a reference point sometimes life is measured against.</p>

<p>But what if your whole family is getting a degree when you are. We are not talking about siblings or cousins but you and your parents. Ashley Adams from Texas will experience such a moment on Saturday (May 13).</p>

<p>Ashley will get a degree while her parents Robyn and Greg get theirs. Ashley will herself graduate will Education major from Texas Lutheran University (TLU). Her mom Robyn is an Master of Accountancy major. Her father Greg, a US Army veteran with a 22-year service is a Business major.</p>

<p>TLU said on its website that this was the first time the university's history that a student will graduate with both of her parents. &nbsp;</p>

<p>“This is my fun fact when I meet people,” said Ashley. “Who else can say that they went to college with both of their parents and will be walking the stage with them? My parents didn’t get to finish their education because they wanted to start a family and there were better opportunities at the time to obtain that goal. I remember how proud I was when they decided to go back to school at a local community college.”</p>

<p>She was quoted by TLU in a news release.</p>

<p>Her parents were attending a community college and thought of transferring to TLU with their daughter. They asked her if that would be ok. Ashley was all on board with the decision.</p>

<p>“The students were so accepting of us, and everyone was always so welcoming,” said Robyn&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The faculty, like Professor Sally Cook, genuinely care about you and want to know you as a person rather than a number in their classroom. We’ve had so many things happen during our time here and they have been so wonderful. From losing both of Greg’s parents to having our son get in a really bad car wreck during finals, they always told us to take care of our family first and we could figure school out later.”</p>

<p>The condition of the victims is yet to be known, and the enforcement agencies have urged students to avoid the area of the incident. Moreover, there is no confirmation or report of any fatalities.</p>

<p>"Multiple victims confirmed. Police are searching for a suspect," officials said on&nbsp;Twitter.</p>

<p>It is not known if the victims were students, but a representative from the Iowa City Police Department told ABC News that the injured were “about that age."</p>

<p>"ICPD continues to investigate. The incident appears isolated. Resume normal activity but remain vigilant," the school said in an alert.</p>

In response to this, Nida Mohammad Nadim, the Taliban's minister of higher education, broke his silence on Thursday and stated that the ban on women attending universities was put in place to prevent the mixing of the genders as well as because he thought some subjects being taught went against the teachings of Islam.</p>

<p>UK PM Rishi Sunak said on Wednesday (December 21) that Taliban's latest decision was a "grave step backwards" and that &nbsp;"the world is watching".</p>

<p>"The women of Afghanistan have so much to offer. Denying them access to university is a grave step backwards," the UK leader tweeted, adding: "We will judge the Taliban by their actions".</p>

<p>The Taliban regime grabbed power immediately after US-led coalition forces left Afghanistan last year. Initially, the Taliban sought to assure the world that it will not revert to its radical ways as seen during their previous rule in late 1990s. They even said publicly that women would be allowed to attend universities.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, the regime slowly began to roll back social progress that had been achieved in two decades under US-supported regime. Primary schools for girls were shut and unreasonable social restrictions on women made return.</p>

<p>The latest in the backward journey was Taliban's decision to prohibit women from going to universities.</p>

<p>The decision has already drawn sharp reactions from the United States and the United Nations</p>

<p>"It's another very troubling move and it's difficult to imagine how the country can develop, deal with all of the challenges that it has, without active participation of women and the education of women," said Stephen Dujarric, United Nations spokesperson.</p>

<p>She added that some artefacts would remain in Cambridge “on extended loan” to ensure “this west African civilisation continues to be represented in the museum’s displays, and in teaching for school groups”.</p>

<p>She explained: “Those that return physically will be transferred to the National Commission for&nbsp;Museums&nbsp;and Monuments, as is required legally by the Republic of Nigeria, and an approach formally supported by the Oba of Benin.”</p>

<p>The "Benin bronzes"—a collective term for thousands of brasses and other pieces—were stolen, and the expense of the armed operation was eventually recouped through sales in London, as reported by the Guardian.</p>

<p>Claims for the return of the artefacts date back to the middle of the 20th century, but they are now spread out throughout the globe in museums in the UK, Europe, and the US.</p>

<p>The move by Cambridge comes as a&nbsp;demand to restore stolen artefacts to institutions and museums grows. Germany returned two bronze statues to Nigeria in July along with more than a thousand other artefacts from its museum holdings.</p>

<p>A few months later, in October, the Smithsonian Institution gave ownership of 29 Benin bronzes back to Nigeria. Lai Mohammed, the Nigerian cultural minister, encouraged the British Museum to do the same.</p>

The move is aimed at increasing the 'socioeconomic diversity' of the Ivy League campus, according to the school administrators.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Princeton University, whose notable alumni include Former First lady Michelle Obama, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor amongst others will no longer accept any payment from students belonging to the aforementioned income bracket.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The move is expected to help over 25 per cent of the university's undergraduates. Reportedly, over 1,500 students will receive full financial aid that covers their tuition, room, and board expenses.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"One of Princeton's defining values is our commitment to ensure that talented students from all backgrounds can not only afford a Princeton education but can flourish on our campus and in the world beyond it," stated Christopher L. Eisgruber, Princeton's president.</p>

<p>It is pertinent to note that earlier only families earning less than $65,000 used to receive full financial aid coverage.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In addition to lowering the ceiling for availing financial help, the University has also done away with the annual student contribution. Under this contribution, students were expected to pay a portion of tuition and expenses with their own savings and on-campus work.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Instead, students will have increased financial aid for books and other personal allowance,&nbsp;</p>

<p>"These improvements to our aid packages, made possible by the sustained generosity of our alumni and friends, will enhance the experiences of students during their time at Princeton and their choices and impact after they graduate." President&nbsp;Eisgruber further added.&nbsp;</p>

In a rather welcome move to make higher education accessible to all, New jersey's Princeton University earlier this week announced that students whose parents earn less than $100,000 per year will have to no longer pay any expenses to attend college.

The move is aimed at increasing the 'socioeconomic diversity' of the Ivy League campus, according to the school administrators. Princeton University, whose notable alumni include Former First lady Michelle Obama, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor amongst others will no longer accept any payment from students belonging to the aforementioned income bracket. The move is expected to help over 25 per cent of the university's undergraduates. Reportedly, over 1,500 students will receive full financial aid that covers their tuition, room, and board expenses. "One of Princeton's defining values is our commitment to ensure that talented students from all backgrounds can not only afford a Princeton education but can flourish on our campus and in the world beyond it," stated Christopher L. Eisgruber, Princeton's president. In addition to lowering the ceiling for availing financial help, the University has also done away with the annual student contribution. Instead, students will have increased financial aid for books and other personal allowance, "These improvements to our aid packages, made possible by the sustained generosity of our alumni and friends, will enhance the experiences of students during their time at Princeton and their choices and impact after they graduate." <p>As a result, it is critical for Indian institutions to encourage students and assist them in coming up with new solutions to combat the boogeyman of climate change. The educational sector plays an important role in performing research and making genuine efforts to preserve and rebuild ecosystems. Universities are widely acknowledged as playing a crucial role in tackling major sustainability challenges through educating future generations, undertaking sustainability research, and encouraging legislators to also include sustainability concepts into the nation's development efforts. On a global basis, university campuses are anticipated to act as an experimental paradigm for sustainability. A clean and sustainable campus will provide a healthy and happy learning environment. Set in the midst of nature, NIIT University has taken various greening initiatives and developed sustainable model to nurture the environment and to sensitize students to urgent need of combating the climate change.</p>

<p>Here are some constructive ideas for universities on how to engage students to combat climate change:</p>

<p><strong>1. Sustainability curriculum</strong></p>

<p>Universities should develop and integrate the sustainability aspect in their curricula. This lesson would introduce students to the seriousness of the climate crisis while also encouraging them to consider solutions from the start. Students should also be encouraged to participate in various environmental initiatives like planting trees, sustaining water bodies, greening hills etc. Getting initiated into The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity, popularly known as TEEB, is another way of powerful orientation for students.</p>

<p><strong>2. Climate Warrior Fellowship</strong></p>

<p>A 'Climate Change Warrior Fellowship' can be launched by some of the country's premier universities to develop an army of young professionals and embed them into the governmental machinery. These young people could use their entrepreneurial thoughts and knowledge to help the government promote climate change initiatives from within the system. This would also equip individuals who are fresh out of high school or college with valuable real-world experience enacting change.</p>

<p><strong>3. Build an international community</strong></p>

<p>Furthermore, our colleges should form a network with other international schools and advance existing projects such as Young Champions of the Earth in order to develop a global group of potential climate entrepreneurs. Governments could boost this interchange by supporting student exchange programs between developed and underdeveloped countries. This would allow young minds to analyze other countries and their approaches, allowing them to develop a holistic multi-cultural view in their approach to resolving the climate disaster.</p>

<p><strong>4. Introduce students to our villages</strong></p>

<p>While cities and urban environments continue to be affected by climate change, India's rural areas remain at the forefront of climate action. Those people who have traditionally contributed the least to current-day carbon emissions, such as India's adivasi and tribal communities, are frequently the most exposed to its dangers and repercussions.</p>

<p>It is critical for our students to engage with adivasi communities on the front lines. Students can use their entrepreneurial skills to assist these communities in developing climate-friendly methods of interacting with their environment and incorporating modern technology and artificial intelligence into their everyday routines and companies.</p>

<p>Unleashing teachers' and students' creativity to tackle climate change through community-based climate action projects led by students would be a quick victory for boosting the general quality of education in a 21st century filled with crises. If implemented on a large scale across India, we might be well on our way to meeting our emission objectives by 2050 and maintaining the quality of life for future generations.</p>

Baloch students at Islamabad university stage protests against harassment

<p>A university student was reportedly arrested earlier this month for teaching Tibetians in Chamdo and is reported to have not been seen afterwards, according to Tibet Watch.</p>

<p>Notably, Chinese authorities have banned 'informal' Tibetan language classes in many areas of Tibet that children attend outside their schools.</p>

<p>The authorities have also warned that anyone caught violating the government's order will face 'serious legal consequences and punishment', Radio Free Asia reported citing a source.</p>

<p>Choedon, who hailed from the Yamda village in Riwoche country, was detained on February 13. According to her family, the language lessons during the winter vacation in the village might have resulted in her detention, Phayul reported.</p>

<p>The University of California said on Tuesday that it will pay compensation of nearly quarter of a billion dollars to 200 women who alleged sexual assault by a school gynaecologist.</p>

<p>James Heap, the gynaecologist was affiliated with university's Los Angeles site (UCLA) for 35 years. During this time, he saw thousands of patients.</p>

<p>Hundreds of lawsuits have claimed that the university deliberately hid the gynaecologist's sexual abuse of patients. This, they say, allowed him to continue to have unfettered access to alleged victims over many years.</p>

<p>In a settlement filed in a Los Angeles court, the university agreed to pay $243.6 million to 203 people who alleged they were assaulted by Heaps.</p>

<p>Heaps faces 21 criminal counts of sexual abuse against seven women.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The conduct alleged to have been committed by Heaps is reprehensible and contrary to the University's values," a statement said Tuesday.</p>

<p>"Our first and highest obligation will always be to the communities we serve, and we hope this settlement is one step toward providing healing and closure for the plaintiffs involved.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We admire the courage of the plaintiffs in coming forward."</p>

<p>The settlement comes after the University of Michigan agreed to pay $490 million to hundreds of students and athletes who were sexually abused by long-time university doctor Richard Anderson.</p>

<p>Nearby Michigan State University reached a half-billion dollar settlement with 300 people who were abused by Larry Nassar, a doctor who also treated members of the US women's Olympics gymnastics team.</p>

<p>The University of Southern California announced in March last year that it had entered into three settlements totalling $1.1 billion with hundreds of female students sexually abused by a school gynaecologist.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A UK lecturer who claimed that she was axed for having a loud voice has been awarded more than £100,000 after winning a claim for unfair dismissal.</p>

<p>Dr Annette Plaut, 60, who was teaching at the University of Exeter’s physics department for 30 years, claimed that a combination of her being female and loud led to her dismissal from the university, according to BBC.</p>

<p>The tribunal, held in Exeter, was told that the lecturer was “inherently loud”, “naturally argumentative” in conversation, and spoke with vigorous hand gestures, and that she was so passionate about physics that she would get overexcited.</p>

<p>It was said that some of her co-workers didn’t like her “overbearing”, “boisterous” and a “Marmite” character, despite students having no qualms about her teaching style.</p>

<p>The physicist was suspended and then sacked following a disciplinary hearing in December 2019, after she was said to be shouting at PhD students and causing them stress and anxiety.</p>

<p>However, Plaut told the tribunal that her eastern European Jewish heritage and upbringing influenced her “stereotypical loudness and demonstrative and argumentative style of” teaching.</p>

<p>The tribunal ruled she was unfairly dismissed and awarded Dr Plaut just under £101,000.</p>

<p>It dismissed claims of race and sex discrimination apart from one harassment claim.</p>

<p>Dr Plaut told the tribunal that she wanted to be reinstated after being consistently treated unfairly by the university over decades and targeted for dismissal.</p>

<p>The university said the dismissal had nothing to do with her being female or Jewish.</p>

<p>“We continue to believe there are serious inaccuracies in these judgements and we are appealing the decision of the employment appeals tribunal,” it said.</p>
