The United Nations General Assembly will be holding an urgent meeting next Monday regarding Russia’s annexation of four regions of Ukraine following referendums which were considered to be “shams” by western countries. A UN spokesperson announced on Monday that the member nations will be discussing a resolution regarding the annexation and their possible responses.

Sources told Reuters that the resolution is currently under preparation after Russia vetoed a condemnation of the move in the Security Council. According to General Assembly spokesperson Paulina Kubiak, the meeting was called at the request of Albania and Ukraine on October 10.

The referendums held in the four Ukrainian regions – Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia – caused a lot of controversy in Europe as it was completely dismissed by the United States and other European countries. On the other hand, Russia claimed victory thanks to “huge number of votes”.

The annexation plan has already been ratified by the lower house of parliament in Russia – the State Duma – and the official announcement was also made by President Vladimir Putin. While Russia was able to veto any action against it in the security council, no such power will exist in the UNGA.

With the Ukraine-Russia crisis not showing any signs of slowing down, several countries have already expressed their concern regarding the referendums. Another major point put forward by a number of UN members has been the lack of control Russia exercises on the four annexed regions.

If it is passed, this will become the fourth resolution against the Russian invasion since April.

UN General Assembly to hold emergency meeting on Russian 'annexation' in Ukraine

India was mentioned by leaders of 12 countries at this year's United Nations General Assembly, many of them thanking India for its support amid Covid, others lauding its role, and some ranting by the habitual adversaries. At the Samarkand bilateral meeting, French President Emmanuel Macron recalled PM Modi's remarks to Russian President Putin on the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Lauding the comments, Macron said, "As Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, rightly said, today’s era is not an era of war." The remarks have been widely praised in the West, and no world leader has made such direct remarks to Russia's President since the conflict began in February this year.

Two western leaders, the UK's Prime Minister Liz Truss and German chancellor Olaf Scholz, both highlighted ties with New Delhi. PM Truss said that her country is "deepening links with fellow democracies like India, Israel, Indonesia, and South Africa." India and the UK are currently engaged in free trade agreement talks, and with London's Indo-Pacific tilt policy, engagement with New Delhi is set to increase further.

The German Chancellor mentioned his government's being involved with "countries holding the Chairmanship of the African Union and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States in our discussions as the G7, as well as India and South Africa". As the chair of the G7, Germany had invited India to attend the summit earlier this year at Schloss Elmau. It is important to know that PM Modi visited Germany twice this year, first on a bilateral visit, then to attend the G7 summit.

Three countries, Portugal, Russia, and Ukraine, backed India for being a member of a reformed United Nations Security Council. Portugal's PM, António Costa, said that the UNSC "should have permanent seats for the African continent, Brazil, and India and should represent small countries more fairly." It is interesting to know that Costa is of Indian origin, with his father's side being from Goa. He has been to India many times, and during one bilateral visit, gave Indian PM Modi a jersey of Portugal's football icon Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ukraine's President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the only leader to address this year's summit, virtually called for reforms at the high table, pointing out, "This is an imbalance when Africa, Latin America, most of Asia, and Central and Eastern Europe comply with the right of veto, that they themselves never had," adding, "For some reason. For what reason, not Japan or Brazil, not Türkiye or India, not Germany or Ukraine. The day will come when this will be resolved. Ukraine's president mentioned India, along with a whole host of countries, who were able to get supplies of Ukrainian agricultural products due to the UN-led Russia-Ukraine deal for the export of agricultural products to the international community amid the ongoing conflict."

Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov also backed India's bid for UNSC, identifying "India and Brazil—key international actors—as worthy candidates for the permanent membership."

Venezuela's foreign minister, Carlos Rafael Fara Tortosa, slammed a "unipolar" world and said the "north" must "accept new powers and new leadership of China, the Russian Federation, India, Iran, and Turkey." While the US president called for reforms of the United Nations Security Council, it was only in a briefing later by US government officials that they pointed out that the White House backs India's bid for the high table.

Bhutan and Nepal both thanked India for its support during the Covid crisis. Bhutan's foreign minister Tandi Dorji said, "Today, more than 90 per cent of our entire population is fully vaccinated. This, in no small measure, was possible due to the heartwarming goodwill of friends and partners, including India, whose Vaccine Maitri initiative enabled the full first round of vaccinations for our adult population."

Bhutan was the first country, along with the Maldives, to receive India-made Covid vaccines, which benefited both countries. Nepal's foreign secretary Bharat Raj Paudyal said, "In Nepal, we have been able to fully vaccinate 96 per cent of the target population, with almost everyone receiving at least one dose. We thank our immediate neighbors India and China, our development partners."

Expressing worry about global food prices, Guyana President Mohamed Irfaan Ali said, "Export bans of rice from India and wheat from Russia contributed to a price increase of 12.3 per cent and 9 per cent for rice and wheat, respectively." The Ukraine conflict and its impact on food and fuel prices were a recurring theme during this year's address by global leaders, particularly from the global south. Ali said, "Since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war, global food prices have increased sharply, reaching an all-time high in February 2022."

On expected lines, Türkiye and Pakistan mentioned India and Kashmir, both of whom got replies from India in some way or another. Türkiye's President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan hyphenating, India and Pakistan said, "We regret that a strong peace and cooperation between India and Pakistan has still not yet been established, despite 75 years following their independence", adding, "We hope that a just and lasting peace and tranquilly will be reached in Kashmir."

While he did mention Kashmir, his position was seen as a change of stance given that since 2019 when India removed special status for the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, he has been critical of Delhi and even mentioned the UNSC resolution's implementation. Hours after his comments, Indian external affairs minister Dr. S Jaishankar met with Türkiye's foreign minister and raised the situation in Cyprus, a touchy issue for Ankara.

Lastly, Pakistan came as no surprise, as PM Shehbaz Sharif mentioned Kashmir more than 12 times, and India more than nine times in his speech, much more than his mention of climate (seven times) and floods (two times). Hours after his remarks at the UNGA, India slammed him in its right of reply.

The Indian diplomat Mijito Vinito said, "It is regrettable that the Prime Minister of Pakistan has chosen the platform of this august assembly to make false accusations against India," explaining that he has done so to "obfuscate misdeeds in his own country and to justify actions against India that the world considers unacceptable."

Average world leader is a 59 years old man, reveals analysis of UNGA session data

India's external affairs minister (EAM) Dr S Jaishankar on Saturday addressed the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and batted for reforms, especially at the high table of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

"The call for reformed multilateralism – with reforms of the Security Council at its core enjoys considerable support among UN members," said Jaishankar.

The Indian external affairs minister did not mince words and stated that the current setup of the UN was anachronistic and ineffective and hence needed urgent reforms.

"It does so because of the widespread recognition that the current architecture is anachronistic and ineffective. It is also perceived as deeply unfair, denying entire continents and regions a voice in a forum that deliberates their future," Jaishankar said in his address.

One of the biggest roadblocks to India's accession to a permanent seat in the UNSC is China. The neighbouring country of India has shown rhetorical commitment toward reforms at the UN but behind the scenes, Beijing has actively worked to ensure that the status quo is maintained.

Thus, New Delhi has its task cut out. However, India's stint in the Security Council in the last year-and-a-half ought to bring some much-needed change.

Speaking at the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov defended his country's seven-month invasion of Ukraine and repeated a series of grievances about its neighbor and the West.

77th UNGA Meet: Lavrov pledges full protection for any territory annexed by Russia

India stated before the UN General Assembly on Saturday, September 24, that it stands "firmly on the side of peace" in the war in Ukraine.

India and Russia have supported each other on defence and in commercial matters for many years. Since the beginning of the Ukraine war in February, India has increased its purchases of coal and oil from Russia.

India has not expressly criticised Russia's actions, but last week, in his most forceful public statement on the subject that was applauded by the United States, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi cautioned Russian President Vladimir Putin that this cannot be an era of war.

"We are on the side that calls for dialogue and diplomacy as the only way out," India's foreign minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said at the United Nations. "We are on the side of those struggling to make ends meet, even as they stare at escalating costs of food, fuel and fertilizers. It is therefore in our collective interest to work constructively, both within the United Nations and outside, in finding an early resolution to this conflict."

On Wednesday (September 21), Putin proclaimed Russia's first military mobilisation since World War Two and threatened to defend his nation with nuclear weapons.

India has been heavily dependent on Russia for military hardware for many years, and the US has been attempting to wean it off.

Since the battle, several American officials have travelled to India, offering it more defence gear in an effort to get it to cut ties with Moscow and limit its reliance on Russian energy imports.

In his speech to the organisation, Jaishankar also mentioned the tensions between India, Pakistan, and China while stating that India has "zero tolerance" for terrorism because it had "bearing the brunt of cross-border terrorism for decades."

Last Friday, Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping posed for group photos for a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), a regional security organisation (September 16). The presidents hadn't been spotted together since the deadly border battles between the Asian foes in 2020.

The incident occurred after more than two years of a stalemate between Indian and Chinese soldiers at a disputed location along a remote western Himalayan frontier. "There is no justification for any act of terrorism, regardless of motivation," Jaishankar said. "And no rhetoric, however sanctimonious, can ever cover up blood stains. Shortly after Pakistani Prime Minister's United Nations address, India started its right to reply on the Kashmir issue, the New Delhi put the blame on Islamabad for fostering terrorists and also for propagating cross-border tensions.

77th UNGA Meet: New Delhi reacts to Pakistani Prime Minister's address

Pakistan once again launched an anti-India tirade and raked up the Kashmir issue at United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Friday (September 23) even and levelled unsubstantiated charges while claiming that it wants peace with all its neighbours.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif began his address on the fourth day of the 77th session of UNGA by referring to the unprecedented floods in Pakistan and their disastrous impact on the residents.

However, he soon switched to mentioning the much-anticipated topic—Kashmir. Sharif said, "Sustainable peace and stability in South Asia, however, remains contingent upon a just and lasting solution to Jammu & Kashmir dispute."

Sharif, who has been seeking aid from all countries for flood relief besides monetary assistance from IMF and other nations for its economy which is in dire straits, further alleged, “At the heart of this longstanding dispute lies the denial of the inalienable right of the Kashmiri people to self-determination."

Sharif added that only peaceful dialogue can resolve issues so that the world becomes more peaceful in the time to come. He said Pakistan wants peace with all its neighbours, including India.

Sharif alleged that New Delhi has ramped up its military deployment in Jammu and Kashmir to 900,000 troops, but did not deny India’s allegations of constant cross-border infiltration of terrorists from Pakistan territory. India has deployed forces in the border areas to counter the influx of terrorists from the Pakistan side.

Without providing any substantive evidence, Sharif said that millions of fake domicile certificates have been issued to non-Kashmiris. He further made fake claims that Kashmiri land and properties are being seized.

In spite of having to deal with a severe economic crisis and massive devastation caused by floods back home, Sharif spoke of the possibility of war and said that India must understand that "both countries are armed to the teeth and war is not an option".

Morning news brief: US, China hold talks on Taiwan, India slams Pakistan & more

Indian diplomat Mijito Vinito has slammed Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif after the latter's address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) for raking the Kashmir issue and making anti-India remarks.

Indian diplomat Mijito Vinito has slammed Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif after the latter's address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) for raking the Kashmir issue and making anti-India remarks. In his right to reply, Mijito Vinito, first secretary, Indian Mission to United Nations, said, "It is regrettable that the Prime Minister of Pakistan has chosen the platform of this august assembly to make false accusations against India." "He has done so to obfuscate misdeeds in his own country and to justify actions against India that the world considers unacceptable," said Vinito. Notably, Pakistan PM Shehbaz while addressing the general assembly had mentioned Kashmir more than 10 times and India more than nine times. Pakistani PMs in the past have used the famous green podium during the annual general assembly to rake up Kashmir, something that hasn't come as a surprise this time as well. Indian diplomat Mijito, raising the issue of Pakistan's support for terror, said, "A polity that claims it seeks peace with its neighbours would never sponsor cross border terrorism." He pointed out how Islamabad continues to "shelter planners of the horrific Mumbai terrorist attack, disclosing their existence only under pressure from the international community". Read more: At UNSC, EAM Jaishankar slams China for putting hold on listing of Pakistan-based terrorist Terror remains a key concern for New Delhi when it comes to Pakistan. As a policy, on multiple occasions, New Delhi has stated that no talks will happen unless Islamabad takes action against terrorism. The first secretary also highlighted the situation of minorities in the country, saying, "When young women in the thousands from the minority community are abducted as an SOP, what can we conclude about the underlying mindset?" Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, and Ahmadiyya's continue to face prosecution and discrimination in Pakistan, which has been well documented "Desire for peace, security and progress in the Indian subcontinent is real but that will surely happen when cross-border terrorism ceases and when governments come clean with the international community and their own people. When minorities are not persecuted and not least, when we recognise these realities before this assembly," the Indian diplomat concluded by saying. In 2020, Mijito had walked out of UNGA hall after then Pakistan PM Imran Khan started making anti-India remarks. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

US secretary of state Antony Blinken and Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York on Friday. A senior US official told reporters that Taiwan was the focus of the 90-minute "direct and honest" talks held between the two. China's foreign ministry, in a statement on the meeting, said the United States was sending "very wrong, dangerous signals" on Taiwan, and the more rampant Taiwan's independence activity, the less likely there would be a peaceful settlement.

"The Taiwan issue is an internal Chinese matter, and the United States has no right to interfere in what method will be used to resolve it," the ministry cited Wang as saying.

Earlier in the meeting, Blinken told his Chinese counterpart that the maintenance of peace and stability over Taiwan was vitally important.

"For our part, the secretary made crystal clear that, in accordance with our long-standing one-China policy, which again has not changed, the maintenance of peace and stability across the Strait is absolutely, vitally important," a senior US administration official told reporters.

Tensions over Taiwan have soared after US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit there in August. China responded by holding large-scale military drills. Recently, US President Joe Biden said that they would defend the democratically governed island.

The White House has insisted its Taiwan policy has not changed, but China said Biden's remarks sent the wrong signal to those seeking an independent Taiwan.

In a phone call with Biden in July before Pelosi's visit, Chinese leader Xi Jinping had warned about Taiwan, saying "those who play with fire will perish by it."

China sees Taiwan as one of its provinces and has long vowed to bring the island under its control and has not ruled out the use of force to do so.

Meanwhile, Taiwan's government strongly objects to China's sovereignty claims and says only the island's 23 million people can decide its future.

Taiwan's foreign ministry, responding to the meeting between Blinken and Wang, said China's "recent provocative actions" had made the Taiwan Strait a focus of discussion, and China was trying to "confuse the international audience with arguments and criticisms that contradict reality."

The State Department had said earlier that Blinken's meeting with Wang was part of a U.S. effort to "maintain open lines of communication and manage competition responsibly," and the senior official said Blinken had reiterated US openness to "cooperating with China on matters of global concern."

US sending 'dangerous signals' on Taiwan, says Chinese foreign minister after one-on-one talks with Blinken

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas addressed the UNGA today. He talked about the two-state solution, he raised the killing of Shireen Abu Akleh. He also said that Israel was no longer a partner in peace.

Palestinian President Abbas wants UN groups to put Israeli groups on terror list

Mahmoud Abbas, President of the State of Palestine and the Palestinian National Authority, spoke at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Friday.

He said, "Israel is launching campaigns... they are giving freedom to terrorists to kill Palestinians. They are looting their land... burning their homes... forcing them to destroy their homes with their own hands, all of this with official protection. Can you imagine what is happening? Israel is saying that either you demolish your house yourself, or else I will."

"Israel killed Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh. She was killed by the bullet of a sniper... the sniper recognised that he did kill her. Apart from Palestinian nationality, she was also an American national," he added.

He blamed Israel for attacking Muslim and Christian holy sites. He accused Israel of being an 'apartheid regime', and asked "Why isn't Israel being held accountable by the United Nations?"

Abbas said Israel has committed heinous crimes against Palestinians and destroyed an ample number of Palestinian villages. He accused Israel of having "deliberately committed these massacres."

The most recent was against Gaza. "The New York Times, a US-based newspaper reported that 67 children were killed in this attack. We want to know why did Israel kill them?," Abbas said.

He said he would like to ask Israel to take charge of this massacre and apologize to the Palestinians. He asked the international community and the International Criminal Court (ICC) to hold Israel accountable for the crimes it has committed.

The Palestinians are still living under Israeli occupation. Referring to the Oslo accords, Abbas told the assembly, "We do not want to be the only party to be respecting the agreements signed in 1993... those agreements are not followed anymore...Israel was the first to violate them...until when shall we be the only party to respect it?"

In his address to the UN on Thursday, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan accused Azerbaijan of committing "unspeakable atrocities" during the most recent fighting between the two adversaries, including dismembering the bodies of slain troops.

The biggest violence since a war in 2020 occurred last week when fighting erupted between the Caucasus republics, leaving around 300 people dead.

"There are evidences of cases of torture, mutilation of captured or already dead servicemen, numerous instances of extra-judicial killings and ill treatment of Armenian prisoners of war, as well as humiliating treatment of the bodies," he told the UN General Assembly.

"The dead bodies of Armenian female military personnel were mutilated, and then proudly video recorded with particular cruelty by the Azerbaijani servicemen."

Pashinyan went on: "No doubt, committing such unspeakable atrocities is a direct result of a decades-long policy of implanting anti-Armenian hatred and animosity in the Azerbaijani society by the political leadership."

Israel Prime Minister Yair Lapid on Thursday (September 22) addressed 77th session of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at UN headquarters in New York. In his speech, he declared support for 'two-state solution' for Israel-Palestine issue.

During his speech, Lapid sought to highlight that Israeli Arabs were not 'enemies'. He underlined that his coalition government has an Arab party, and that there are Arab judges in Israel's supreme court. There were Arab doctors in Israel saving lives, he said.

"An agreement with the Palestinians, based on two states for two peoples, is the right thing for Israel's security, for Israel's economy and for the future of our children," Lapid said, adding that any agreement would be conditional on a peaceful Palestinian state that would not threaten Israel.

In his speech, Lapid alleged that 'anti-Israel movement' was spreading fake news against Israel.

PM Lapid especially slammed Iran which he said was conducting 'orchestra of hate' against Israel. Though he did not explicitly repeat Israel's known position against revival of nuclear deal with Iran, he made clear his opposition for Iran acquiring nuclear weapons.

"If Iran gets nuclear weapons, it will use it," said Lapid.

Nuclear deal with Iran was struck by the US and other world powers in 2015. But former US president Donald Trump unilaterally pulled US out of the deal in 2018. Negotiations are now on to restore the deal. Israel is fiercely against revival of the deal.
