EU foreign ministers are meeting in Luxembourg on Monday (April 14), with Ukraine topping the agenda, following a deadly Russian strike on the city of Sumy that left at least 34 people dead and more than 100 injured.
The attack, which took place on Palm Sunday, has drawn strong condemnation from European leaders, many of whom see it as a direct response to recent peace efforts. Russia has so far dismissed the proposed ceasefire, and EU leaders say this only proves why Ukraine must be fully supported.
&ldquo; It reminds us why we must keep maximum pressure on Russia,&rdquo; said EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas, warning against letting up as President Vladimir Putin continues to reject diplomatic overtures.

Ukraine recently apprehended two Chinese soldiers fighting for Russia. This follows a broader intelligence report which identified 163 Chinese nationals believed to be involved in the war on Moscow&rsquo;s side.
&ldquo; We are collecting information, we believe that there are many more,&rdquo; Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told reporters on 9 April.

<h2>Zelensky accuses Beijing of looking the other way</h2>
President Zelensky also pointed a finger at China, accusing its authorities of either supporting or failing to prevent the recruitment of Chinese citizens to fight in Ukraine.
&ldquo;Beijing knows about this. Russians distribute advertising videos about recruitment through Chinese social networks,&rdquo; he said.
Both sides in the war have relied on foreign fighters since it began. But the presence of Chinese mercenaries in particular has drawn comparisons to North Korean troops, who were reportedly deployed in large numbers to help Russia in its efforts to retake parts of Kursk Oblast.

<h2>Chinese recruits promised big money online</h2>
Ukrainian intelligence says the first wave of Chinese fighters appeared in Russia in the summer of 2023. However, signs of recruitment efforts were visible much earlier.
One post from July 2022 on Douyin, China&rsquo;s version of TikTok, shows a man preparing to leave Beijing for Russia on 1 September. In the video, he says, &ldquo;Your daily salary will be 30,000 Russian rubles. Welcome to Russia!&rdquo; The claim suggests a salary of around $350 per day.
Recruitment videos have continued into this year, with some offering generous incentives. One video promises a sign-up bonus of 2.3 million rubles ($27,000) and an annual salary of 5.2 million rubles ($62,000) to new recruits.

But the reality of life on the front line tells a very different story.
<h2>'Don&rsquo;t come. There is nothing good here'</h2>
Zhao Rui, from Chongqing, became the first known Chinese casualty of the war in December after he was reportedly killed by a Ukrainian drone.
&ldquo;Don&rsquo;t come. There is nothing good here to come to,&rdquo; Zhao had said, according to Chinese media.
A documentary released in March featured a Chinese assault soldier known as &ldquo;Macron&rdquo; speaking to journalist Chai Jing from near Bakhmut.
&ldquo;I realised I might die here someday, so I decided to share some real experiences,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;Since Chinese people haven&rsquo;t been at war in a long time, I wanted to show what a regular soldier, especially a foreign one, really goes through in war,&rdquo; he added.

Macron described harsh treatment and prejudice during training. &ldquo; There has been severe racial discrimination since training camp, discriminating against Black people, Arabs, and Chinese,&rdquo; he said.
He added, &ldquo;Russia is reluctant to send their regular Slavic troops to charge on the front lines, so they spend money to recruit mercenaries for front-line charges, where survival chances are extremely low.&rdquo;
Some of the Chinese recruits have ended up in units like Storm-Z, known for sending fighters into high-risk missions. Reports from August showed two young Chinese men dying on their very first deployment with Storm-Z.
Families of Chinese fighters killed in action are reportedly owed 400,000 renminbi, just over $50,000. But reports say those payments are often delayed.
<h2>Contracts that never end</h2>
There are also claims that the Russian military has refused to release Chinese fighters at the end of their contracts.
&ldquo; We&rsquo;ll terminate your contract only after winning the war,&rdquo; one Chinese soldier recalled being told, during an interview with blogger Lei&rsquo;s Real World in July.
He added, &ldquo;Two of my men deserted. They are making every effort to capture them. If they are caught, they won&rsquo;t live for sure. So I can only wish the two deserters good luck.&rdquo;

‘Don’t come, there’s nothing good here’: Chinese soldiers fighting for Russia warn of death, racism, and endless contracts

Donald Trump has said that he expects Russian President Vladimir Putin to fulfill his part of the deal, and this, of course, to end the Russia-Ukraine war, after the U.S. president had voiced his doubts about Moscow's commitment. Now, speaking to reporters inside the Oval Office, Trump said that he wants to make sure that Putin follows through and strikes a deal to end the war. Watch in for more details!

US envoy Witkoff meets Putin amid Trump's fury over slow progress in ceasefire

The Russian President Vladimir Putin saying the country's naval strategic nuclear forces are now fully equipped with modern weapons and systems. In fact, the announcement comes during a high-level meeting with military and government officials in St. Petersburg, where Putin stressed that strengthening these nuclear-armed, atomic-powered submarines remains a priority.

The Kremlin said on Friday that a phone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and former US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/open-to-a-deal-trump-optimistic-about-striking-a-deal-with-china-amid-tariff-row-8952798" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> could take place, following a meeting in St. Petersburg between Trump&rsquo;s special envoy Steve Witkoff and senior Russian officials.
The talks, which focused on the war in Ukraine, were attended by Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov and Kirill Dmitriev, who heads the Russian Direct Investment Fund and serves as the president&rsquo;s representative for foreign investment.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov described the start of the meeting as &ldquo;businesslike&rdquo; and added that a conversation between Putin and Trump is &ldquo;theoretically possible&rdquo; following the discussions.

<h2>Trump: "A senseless war that should never have happened"</h2>
The comments came just hours after Trump repeated his criticism of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, calling it &ldquo;senseless&rdquo; and insisting it would never have started under his leadership.
&ldquo;Russia has to get moving. Too many people were DYING, thousands a week, in a terrible and senseless war - A war that should have never happened, and wouldn&rsquo;t have happened, if I were President!!!&rdquo; Trump posted on Truth Social on Friday (11 April).

Earlier this week, Trump confirmed that peace talks with Russia were ongoing and stressed the urgent need to end the violence.
&ldquo; We are talking to Russia, we would like them to stop. I don't like them bombing on and on, and every week thousands of young people being killed,&rdquo; he said when asked about the progress of a possible peace deal.

This was Witkoff&rsquo;s third trip to Russia, following his last visit on 13 March in Moscow, where he met with high-ranking Russian officials and was received by President Putin.

Although Friday&rsquo;s meeting centred on Ukraine, recent talks between US and Russian officials in Istanbul were limited to embassy matters and did not include the conflict.
Trump continues to push for a ceasefire in Ukraine, though his efforts have not yet led to concrete results. A 30-day ceasefire agreement between Washington and Kyiv was reached in March, but Moscow has so far refused full cooperation. Russia has also failed to respect the terms of a limited energy truce agreed after the initial deal.
