Millions have fled Ukraine after Russian troops entered the Ukrainian territory on February 24. Cities have been destroyed and the effect can be seen on the environment too. Aerial bombings and missile attacks in Ukraine have led to a tremendous effect on the environment. Now several organisations are collecting data on environmental crimes committed after Russia’s invasion. Can Russia be held accountable for environmental crimes too?

McDonald's to leave Russia after more than three decades over Ukraine conflict

The ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict has impacted the global economy deeply and the Governor of the Bank of England Andrew Bailey believes that the global food prices can reach ‘apocalyptic’ levels if the war continues. The disruption in supply chain has resulted in surging inflation across the world and Bailey warned the MPs on the Treasury Select Committee of a "very big income shock".

“The [risk] I'm going to sound rather apocalyptic about I guess is food.”

“Ukraine does have food in store, but it can’t get it out at the moment. While [the finance minister] was optimistic about crop planting, he said at the moment we have no way of shipping it out as things stand, and it is getting worse.”

“That is a major worry. It is not just a major worry for this country, it is a major worry for the developing world.

“I am by no stretch of the imagination a military strategist, but whatever can be done to help Ukraine get its food out would be a huge contribution,” Bailey said according to The Telegraph.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has already predicted that the growth rate of Europe will be cut down by almost half because of the conflict and according to estimates, a huge number of food stock has been destroyed because of Russian blockade of the Ukrainian supply ships.

Food price are already rising due to the shortage of grains in some parts of the world and when asked about the situation, Bailey said that it is 'more than uncomfortable'.

“It is a very very, more than uncomfortable - I am trying to think of a word that is even more severe than that - it is a very very difficult place to be.

“The [risk] I'm going to sound rather apocalyptic about I guess is food.” Also read | More than 260 Ukrainian soldiers evacuated from Mariupol steel plant “Ukraine does have food in store, but it can’t get it out at the moment. While [the finance minister] was optimistic about crop planting, he said at the moment we have no way of shipping it out as things stand, and it is getting worse.” “That is a major worry. WION Global Summit 2022: Is there any foreseeable end to Russia-Ukraine war?

Ukrainian deputy minister of foreign affairs Dmytro Senik said that the Russian invasion of Ukraine has far-reaching consequences for the entire world and warned that the ongoing crisis can cause serious problems for the global food security. He made the comments ahead of the third session titled ‘Trade wars: No long-term winners’ at the fifth edition of WION Global Summit in Dubai.

“The unprovoked attack from Russia on Ukraine will certainly have grave consequences for the entire international system. For the first time, since the end of World War II, we witness brutalities committed by Russia – the country that sits as a permanent member of the United Nations security council and was expected to be a peace guarantor, not a wrecker of the global architecture.”

“According to the IMF, the global economic recovery will slow down significantly due to the Russia invasion of Ukraine. The IMF not only downgraded growth prospects in Europe but warned that countries around the world may witness disruption in commodities market due to the invasion.”

“Russian invasion will cause problems for global food security. In total, Ukraine is the global food security contributor which feeds around 400 million people around the world. Ukrainian grain, corn and sunflower oil are traditional supplies to Europe, North Africa and Middle East as well as Asia. Looting of Ukrainian grain by Russian soldiers, blockade of shipments from Ukrainian routes as well as attacking the global shipping routes endangers global food security,” Senik explained.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) projected the world to grow by 3.6% in 2022 – a sharp fall from the 6.1% growth in 2021. Senik also accused Russia of deliberately targeting the public infrastructure in various Ukrainian cities as a result of their failure to capture Kyiv.

“While failing to occupy Kyiv and other major cities, Russia destroyed hundreds of Ukrainian hospitals, educational institutions, theatres, road infrastructure and residential buildings. More than 2000 missiles were fired to destroy the civilian infrastructure in Ukraine,” he said in his speech.

Senik was also all praise for WION for their coverage of the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict.

“Journalists from WION were among the first to visit Ukraine on the eve of the Russia aggression and stayed there during the most difficult days. I would like to thank Miss Palki Sharma Upadhyay for her courage demonstrated in Ukraine in those days,” he concluded.

For the first time, since the end of World War II, we witness brutalities committed by Russia – the country that sits as a permanent member of the United Nations security council and was expected to be a peace guarantor, not a wrecker of the global architecture.” Also read | LIVE | WION's Global Summit 2022 “According to the IMF, the global economic recovery will slow down significantly due to the Russia invasion of Ukraine. The IMF not only downgraded growth prospects in Europe but warned that countries around the world may witness disruption in commodities market due to the invasion.” “Russian invasion will cause problems for global food security. WATCH | WION Global Summit 2022: Keynote address by Ukraine Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Senik The International Monetary Fund (IMF) projected the world to grow by 3.6% in 2022 – a sharp fall from the 6.1% growth in 2021. Senik also accused Russia of deliberately targeting the public infrastructure in various Ukrainian cities as a result of their failure to capture Kyiv. WATCH WION LIVE HERE -
