US dismisses Ukraine's demand for long-range weapons

Fight between Russian and Ukrainian forces has reached outskirts of Sievierodonetsk, the last city in Luhansk under Ukrainian control. Much of the city has been reduced to ruins but defence by Ukrainian forces has slowed Russian campaign in the Donbas region.

'Find cool projects': Amid Russian offensive in eastern Ukraine, Zelensky visits Kharkiv

With Russia's military offensive and Ukraine showing no signs of abating, Western leaders are once again ramping up efforts to initiate peace talks between the two sides to help end the conflict. In the latest, French president Emmanuel Macron and German chancellor Olaf Scholz held a three-way telephone conversation with Vladimir Putin urging the leader to hold direct and serious negotiations with his Ukrainian counterpart.

Chicken, which is said to be the world's most consumed meat, is becoming expensive. A Bloomberg report mentioned that chicken prices have been surging in recent months. From the United States to Singapore, consumers are witnessing an increase in prices. But why is it happening?

The report stated three main reasons behind the price rise, which are the Russia-Ukraine war, detection of bird flu cases and global inflation.

The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war has disrupted the global supply chain. In the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, multiple economic sanctions were imposed on Moscow by the US and Western allies, causing strained relations between them.

Gas and wheat are one of the most impacted commodities amid the Ukraine war. However, the rise in chicken prices is also connected to the war.

Bloomberg report explained how the prices are affected. Ukraine is a major producer of corn and wheat - components of chicken feed. Now, because of the war, global supply has been cut off.

Such disruptions are leading to significant pain for poultry farmers. As per the report, prices of a bird jumped about 8 per cent from the end of last year in the UK.

Avian flu emerged as another jolt to the poultry farmers, who struggled to stop the spread and were forced to implement mass culls.

The Bloomberg report noted that in the US, more than 38 million chickens and turkeys have been killed since the start of February in a massive outbreak. The UK faced its largest-ever outbreak of bird flu last October. One in 20 birds has been culled, the report mentioned.

Ukraine war: Russia targets key eastern town; civilians trapped

The collateral damage of the Ukraine war has been huge with the conflict now crossing the four-month mark. The ramifications of the war is hard to ignore, it's not just Ukraine or Russia, the effects of the war have spilled beyond the borders thus making it now a global crisis.

Ukraine invasion: Russia blames West for food crisis

Ukraine has started receiving Harpoon anti-ship missiles from Denmark and self-propelled howitzers from the United States, arms that will bolster forces fighting Russia's invasion, Ukrainian Defence Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said on Saturday.

"The coastal defence of our country will not only be strengthened by Harpoon missiles – they will be used by trained Ukrainian teams," Reznikov wrote on his Facebook page.

He said Harpoon shore-to-ship missiles would be operated alongside Ukrainian Neptune missiles to defend the coast, including the southern port of Odesa.

Serhiy Bratchuk, a spokesman for the Odesa regional military administration in southern Ukraine, said in an online post that "so many Harpoons have been handed over to us that we can sink the entire Russian Black Sea Fleet. Why not?"

Last month the Moskva, the flagship of Russia's Black Sea fleet, sank after what Ukraine said was an anti-ship missile attack. Moscow says a fire sparked an ammunition blast.

After launching its invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, Russia imposed a naval blockade on Ukrainian ports, hampering vital grain exports. It has also used its Black Sea fleet to launch missile attacks.

Reznikov said Ukraine had also received a range of heavy artillery pieces, including modified U.\S-made M109 self-propelled howitzers that will allow the Ukrainian military to strike targets from longer distances.

Ukraine says it wants to secure deliveries of US-made long-range M270 multiple-rocket launchers.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine, working to boost weapons supplies, was approaching the point where it would outnumber the Russians technologically and in terms of its ability to strike.

"Of course, a lot depends on our partners and their readiness to provide Ukraine with everything necessary to protect freedom. And I expect good news on this next week," he said in a late-night video, without giving details.

Zelenskiy adviser Oleksiy Arestovych said late on Saturday that "the weapons we so desperately need will most likely be delivered soon."

Key will be a NATO defence ministers meeting in Brussels in mid-June, attended by Reznikov, Arestovych said on social media television. "If the allies in the West do not delay ... then around June 20 the situation on the front will change greatly in our favour."

Russia says its forces are on a "special operation" to demilitarise Ukraine and rid it of radical anti-Russian nationalists. Ukraine and its allies call that a false pretext to for a war of aggression.

The governor of Ukraine's Luhansk region has said that Ukrainian soldiers may retreat from their last pocket in the region to avoid being captured. Russian troops are advancing in Luhansk and Donetsk, collectively known as the Donbas region.

If such a withdrawal takes place, it will bring Russia closer to its goal of asserting control of the Donbas region. Russian troops are gaining ground in the region.

Luhansk's governor, Serhiy Gaidai, said Russian troops had entered Sievierodonetsk, the largest Donbas city still held by Ukraine, after trying to trap Ukrainian forces there for days. Gaidai said 90% of buildings in the town were damaged.

"The Russians will not be able to capture Luhansk region in the coming days as analysts have predicted," Gaidai said on Telegram, referring to Sievierodonetsk and its twin city Lysychansk across the Siverskiy Donets River.

"We will have enough strength and resources to defend ourselves. However, it is possible that in order not to be surrounded we will have to retreat."

Donbas region has a strong presence of Russia-backed separatist elements. These separatists have said that they now controlled Lyman, a railway hub west of Sievierodonetsk. Ukraine said Russia had captured most of Lyman but that its forces were blocking an advance to Sloviansk, to the southwest.

US President Joe Biden on Friday (May 27) told Naval Academy graduates that their job will be to ensure maritime freedom in South China Sea. He was spaking before 1200 graduate cadets in Annapolis, Maryland. He told them that they were entering military service at a time of many global challenges.

"You'll defend the international rules of the road, underwrite the future of the Indo-Pacific that is free and open, ensure freedom of navigation of the South China Sea and beyond, and make sure the sea lanes remain open and secure," he said.

"These long-standing basic maritime principles are the bedrock of a global economy and global stability. You're going to help get together our allies in Europe and with our allies in the Indo-Pacific," Biden added.

China claims the entirety of South China Sea citing ancient claims. This has brought it at odds with other countries in the region. US has sought to contest Chinese claims.

During his speech Biden also spoke about situation in Europe where Ukraine is battling Russian invasion. Biden said that Russian President Vladimir Putin's attempt to divide Europe had backfired.

Biden, who helped form a coalition of nations to oppose Russia's invasion of Ukraine, had harsh words for Putin and said his attempt to divide NATO allies had failed.

"Not only is he trying to take over Ukraine, he’s literally trying to wipe out the culture and identity of the Ukrainian people. Attacking schools, nurseries, hospitals, museums, with no other purpose than to eliminate a culture," Biden said.

Putin tried to "Finland-ize" Europe but "instead he NATO-ized all of Europe," said Biden, a reference to neutral nations Finland and Sweden's plans to join the alliance.

Nine people were killed in fresh Russian shelling on Ukraine's second city Kharkiv Thursday. Life had begun to return to normal in the city after Moscow’s troops were forced to retreat.

United Kingdom prime minister Boris Johnson believes that Ukraine should receive more long-range multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) in order to combat the Russian forces. The Russian invasion of Ukraine is already in its third month and Johnson said that the new ammunition can be key for Kyiv to defend the Donbas region. In an interview with Bloomberg, Johnson said that the MLRS system are important “to defend themselves against this very brutal Russian artillery, and that’s where the world needs to go”. However, the British PM did not commit to sending the M270 rocket system despite repeated requests from Ukraine in front of the NATO countries in the last few weeks.

The stance from NATO nations have not been in favour of sending long-range rockets to Ukraine till now but this can mean that the approach can be changing. Earlier, the United States also rejected Ukraine’s request but a CNN report suggested that they can also be changing their tone very soon.

In the interview, Johnson said that Russia is “continuing to chew through ground” in the Donbas region, making “slow, but I’m afraid palpable, progress”. Ukrainian officials on Friday said that the Russian forces have taken control of the city of Lyman in the country's eastern Donetsk region.

Boris Johnson calls for Ukraine to be sent more long-range rocket systems to fight Russia

Teams from Belarus and Ukraine will be prevented from being drawn against each other in any UEFA competition going forward, the Executive Committee of European soccer`s governing body said on Friday.
The move comes following Russia`s invasion of Ukraine for which Belarus has been a key staging area. Teams from Russia and Ukraine were already prevented from being drawn against each other well before the conflict began earlier this year.

In March, UEFA had said Belarusian clubs and the national team will have to play all their home matches in UEFA competitions at neutral venues with no spectators allowed. "Today`s further decision is made to ensure the smooth running of UEFA competitions as the safety and security of the teams, officials and other participants may not be fully guaranteed due to the existence of a military conflict," UEFA said.
"The UEFA Executive Committee will remain on standby to convene further meetings to reassess the legal and factual situation as it evolves and adopt further decisions as necessary."

Ukraine military said on Thursday that Russian forces shelled more 40 towns in Ukraine's Donbas region. This has raised concerns that the shelling may shut off last main escape route for civillians. Russian invasion of Ukraine is now in its fourth month.

Russia has focussed its firepower on Donbas after failing to achieve victory in capital Kyiv or Kharkiv. Separatist elements in Donbas already enjoy support from Russia.

Russia has poured thousands of troops into the region, attacking from three sides in an attempt to encircle Ukrainian forces holding out in the city of Sievierodonetsk and its twin Lysychansk. Their fall would leave the whole of Luhansk province under Russian control, a key Kremlin war aim.

"The occupiers shelled more than 40 towns in Donetsk and Luhansk region, destroying or damaging 47 civilian sites, including 38 homes and a school. As a result of this shelling five civilians died and 12 were wounded," the Joint Task Force of Ukraine's armed forces said on Facebook.

The report from Ukraine military said that 10 attacks were repelled four tanks and four drones destroyed, and 62 "enemy soldiers" were killed

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Russian troops "heavily outnumber us" in some parts of the east.

Reuters said it was unable to independently confirm reports from the battlefield.

As Moscow seeks to solidify its grip on the territory it has seized, President Vladimir Putin signed a decree simplifying the process for residents of newly captured districts to acquire Russian citizenship and passports.

The Russian parliament scrapped the upper age limit for contractual service in the military on Wednesday, highlighting the need to replace lost troops.

Russia shelled more than 40 towns in Donbas, says Ukraine military

Chechen strongman and an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ramzan Kadyrov, has warned Poland to "better take back your weapons" from Ukraine as he is ready to attack the European country. A video of his comment surfaced on Twitter where he can be heard saying that the issue of Ukraine is “closed”, and if given the order, he's “interested in Poland”.

Kadyrov also demanded an apology from Poland for an incident involving Russia's ambassador earlier this month where the latter was splattered with red paint by anti-war protesters during a Victory Day ceremony.

"The issue of Ukraine is closed. I'm interested in Poland. What is it trying to achieve?" Kadyrov said, according to a translation.

"After Ukraine, if we are given the command, in six seconds we will show what we are capable of. You should better take back your weapons and your mercenaries. Poland is one of the countries that has supplied weapons to Ukraine to defend itself from Russia's invasion that has been going on since late February.

The Polish government says it has supplied weapons worth $1.6 billion, including hundreds of tanks, howitzers, and Grad rocket launchers.

Notably, Kadyrov is not the only one who has called for the invasion of Poland in recent weeks.

Oleg Morozov, a member of the Russian parliament and a top member of Putin's political party, United Russia, suggested earlier this month that Poland should be "in first place in the queue for denazification after Ukraine," according to an English translation of a Telegram post, Newsweek reported.
