Several cities in Ukraine were rocked by explosions on Monday as Russia launched its offensive in response to the attack on the Kerch bridge between Russia and Crimea. The attacks in Kyiv were caught on camera by a girl who was out on the streets, and she posted the video on social media. &nbsp;

The video was captured at the intersection of Volodymyrska and Shevchenko Streets in central Kyiv and it showed the girl explaining the situation in the city to someone through a video call.&nbsp;

According to BBC, Shevchenko University was visible behind her in the video.&nbsp;

The attacks continued for a very long time and according to a statement released by the Ukrainian military, around 75 missiles were launched by the Russian side with 40 out of them getting intercepted.&nbsp;

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticised Russia for the damage caused by the strikes and said that Iranian missiles were used by the Russians to hit Kyiv, Dnipro, and Lviv.&nbsp;

"Air raid sirens are not subsiding around Ukraine... Unfortunately, there are dead and wounded. Please do not leave the shelters." He also accused Russia of wanting to "wipe us from the face of the Earth".&nbsp;&nbsp;

However, other politicians, notably in the Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine and Crimea, have urged for reprisal.

The species of frog found in this area, known as the Eastern tree frogs (Hyla Orientalis), typically have bright green skin but now many have sprung up with dark or pigmented skin.

A study published in Evolutionary Applications details the research surrounding these frogs' evolution. Scientists believe that darker skin might help the frogs survive in the exclusion zone.&nbsp;

Germán Orizaola a researcher at the Spain University of Oviedo&nbsp;and a co-author of the study, said that his team became aware of the frogs on their first night in Chernobyl.

"We know that melanin protects from the damage caused by different types of radiation, from UV to ionizing radiation – the kind at Chernobyl," Daily Mail quotes&nbsp;Orizaola as saying.

Orizaola and his co-author&nbsp;Pablo Burraco&nbsp;collected more than 200 male frog specimens from about a dozen different breeding ponds with varying levels of radiation between 2017 and 2019, reports TWC.

However, the most radioactive locations today did not correlate with the darkest frog populations. Although darker frogs were most prominent in the areas that were worst affected at the time of the catastrophe.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24. After sustained territorial gains in first few months of the conflict, Russian forces have had to retreat in the face of Ukrainian counteroffensive.&nbsp;

According to the ministry's website, Surovikin,&nbsp;55, born in Siberia's Novosibirsk,&nbsp;has combat experience in the 1990s conflicts in Tajikistan and Chechnya and, more recently, in Syria, where Moscow intervened in 2015 on the side of Bashar al-Assad's regime.&nbsp;

Until now Surovikin led the "South" forces in Ukraine, according to a defence ministry report in July.&nbsp;

The name of his predecessor has never been officially revealed, but some Russian media said it was General Alexander Dvornikov &nbsp;-- also a general of the Second Chechen War and Russian commander in Syria.&nbsp;

Russian setbacks in Ukraine have led to growing criticism of senior leadership. The criticism has also come from the elite members in Russian political and military spheres.

Ukraine's state nuclear company and UN atomic watchdog said on Saturday (October 8) that overnight shelling has cut power supply of Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant and that the plant was on emergency diesel generators. Zaporizhzhia,&nbsp;the biggest nuclear plant in Europe, is currently occupied by Russian forces.

Buildings in the nuclear plant have suffered damage and the situation threatens of a catastrophic nuclear accident.&nbsp;Russia and Ukraine have blamed each other for the shelling.

The International Atomic Energy Energy (IAEA) is pushing for &nbsp;a protection zone to be set up to prevent further shelling.

Constant electricity supply is critical for the nuclear plant as the nuclear fuel needs cooling to prevent a nuclear meltdown.

"The resumption of shelling, hitting the plant's sole source of external power, is tremendously irresponsible. The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant must be protected," the IAEA quoted its chief Rafael Grossi as saying in a statement.

The IAEA confirmed an earlier statement by Ukrainian nuclear regulator Energoatom that said the plant had switched to its diesel generators after shelling at around 1 a.m. cut the main 750 kilovolt line supplying external power to the plant.

Hong Kong said Friday it will not act on any "unilateral" Western sanctions, after a luxury megayacht linked to one of Russia's wealthiest oligarchs docked in its waters.

The vessel, named Nord, is reportedly tied to billionaire Alexei Mordashov, one of the many oligarchs close to Russian President Vladimir Putin who have been sanctioned by the United States, the European Union and Britain following the invasion of Ukraine.

Authorities in Spain, Italy, France and Fiji have impounded yachts linked to Putin-linked sanctioned oligarchs to try and add pressure on him.

Hong Kong, however, has said it will not take such action after the 142-metre (466-foot) yacht was spotted west of the city by eagle-eyed locals on Thursday.

The Marine Department said it implements United Nations sanctions but not those imposed by individual nations or blocs.

"The Hong Kong government does not implement, nor do we have the legal authority to take action on, unilateral sanctions imposed by other jurisdictions," a spokesperson told AFP on Friday.

Mordashov, the main shareholder in steelmaker Severstal, is among Russia's ultrawealthy, who have long been major buyers of superyachts -- pleasure vessels classed as more than 30 metres long.

These yachts have become targets for Ukraine's Western allies, who are hunting for the assets of sanctioned figures as they seek to punish Moscow for the Ukraine invasion.

The Nord sailed to the eastern Russian port of Vladivostok after the war began and had been anchored there since March, Bloomberg News reported.

Marine tracking websites showed the US$500 million vessel -- which boasts two helipads, a cinema and more than a dozen luxury cabins, left Vladivostok last week.

It initially indicated that it was heading for the Vietnamese port of Da Nang.

A spokesperson for Mordashov told Bloomberg News on Thursday that the billionaire was in Moscow and declined to comment on the yacht's movements.

In March, Italy seized the Lady M, a yacht belonging to Mordashov, citing EU sanctions.

Vessels arriving in Hong Kong must present a list of crew members and passengers who must pass through immigration.

Foreign yachts cannot stay for more than 182 consecutive days according to the Hong Kong Standard newspaper.

Hong Kong's current leader John Lee is himself sanctioned by the United States alongside multiple local and mainland Chinese officials for their ongoing crackdown on political freedoms in the business hub.

China has conspicuously not condemned the invasion of Ukraine, and said it has a "no-limits" relationship with Russia.
